I actually liked this movie. It made me laugh, it had some cool visuals and metaphysics. that's all I need from a Ghostbusters movie. In some ways I liked it more than Afterlife; Afterlike was more about the sentiment, about being poignant, while this was in many ways truer to the original conceit of "comedians running after weird special effects". Sure, neither of these recent Ghostbusters movies are as good as the first two, but they're still good. For me, all Ghostbusters movies are good.

The weak parts for me are that the characters weren't as memorable, the jokes not as consistent, and the music sucked. I wouldn't call that a failure, just not as good as the first 2. Not remotely the worst movie of 2015 for me. Like I liked it more than Jurassic World or Star Wars.

Yeah it was definitely not “simply bc women were in it.” You have a tiny ass minority maybe that bitched but the majority of people called the spade a spade. It was an obnoxiously unfunny movie that barely put any time into the characters, world, writing and tried to ride the whole thing on the four actress’ improv and the nostalgia of the original. It’s a fucking terrible movie and it’s not because women were in it. Bridesmaids came out a couple years earlier and it was praised like hell. The movie just sucked. It literally ends with the four shooting a giant ghost in the dick. Like that should be funny but like the rest of the film it was painful to watch.

Just finished watching this movie for the first time. I enjoyed it. I think this was made when people were really bothered by remakes. Nowadays it seems every movie, show and song are just remakes. The SNL casting was smart, they work well together. A lot of the original cast scattered throughout the movie, which was a fun surprise. The move was even produced by Dan Aykroyd. If the original cast was behind this project then why were people so mad?

The theatrical cut of the movie is good and the extended cut makes for a very good movie. I remember the social media/reddit/youtube trailer/etc run-up to the movie and it was heavily bombed before literally anything was out. I remember when the first promo pictures released with the 4 women in the jumpsuit uniforms & a male coworker of mine was repeating all the complaints men had about it looking so terrible and how it was a sign the whole movie was trash (again- these were just the very first promo pictures released before the movie was even done filming) but admitted, completely baffled, that I was right when I pointed out they were extremely similar to the jumpsuit uniforms worn in the original movie (he meant well, he was autistic & had difficulty understanding the concept of people making bad faith arguments so he genuinely believed all those guys shitting on the movie were just 100% authentically and in good faith sharing their totally normal opinions on this movie the same way they would any other movie, hence his confusion when shown evidence that those uniforms were functionally identical to one in the original and not, in fact, The Worst Thing Cinema Has Seen Ever) Granted, I had issues with some of the stuff in the movie, mostly Leslie Jones' character (just to be clear, nothing that was the fault of the lovely Leslie Jones herself) But it's kinda a difficult thing to parse- apparently a lot of what I had an issue with was stuff the actress was allowed to ad-lib. However, I'm aware that black actors know the (usually white) director probably isn't going to put anything in the movie that strays too far from expected stereotypes. So even if the "loud, angry black woman slaps the devil out of someone" thing was something Leslie came up with, would it be because she genuinely wanted to play that character or was it because she thought it was expected of her & that the director wouldn't like it if she tried, say, a kooky hippie spiritualist trying to hug-it-out with a malevolent ghost type of character? (think Professor Trelawney from Harry Potter kinda vibe)

@kissit0122 жыл бұрын
Stereotypes are not untrue just incomplete representations of groups of people. Leslie Jones basically played herself. She is fine the way she is. A funny, wild, free Black American Woman. Just because negative social connotations have been forced onto people about specific expressions of black womanhood and encouraged to be rejected, doesn’t mean we have to agree or accept it. And they don’t need to be a reason to discourage others from expressing themselves the way they feel comfortable. There are many other representations of black womanhood that are the opposite and everything in between, maybe you should look into those instead. She did well and so did the others (who are also playing stereotypes of other people, which you didn’t seem to notice). Her black is beautiful. (~A black woman)

You should check out the original. It was good because it really wasn't a comedy. It was played pretty straight, and was funny because of the situations these "scientists" found themselves in. It was much more horror/sci-fi. The third (? - Cheech and the Statue of Liberty) suffered the same fate when they started leaning into the comedy too hard.
@coreyrider80562 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason for the response was that, up until the months before the reboot was announced, the studio and original creators were pushing for Ghostbusters 3, with new Ghostbuster recruits. According to the leaked 2014 Sony e-mails, originals films director Ivan Reitman wanted a sequel with a mix of male and female Ghostbusters, while producer Amy Pascal (the Spiderman movies) demanded an all-female reboot. It also ended up coming out that Sony was deleting comments off of trailers and promo material from female fans so as to further the misogynist, toxic fanboy angle to the media. All that, combined with it coming out during the height of the 2016 election, I feel like it made audiences feel like seeing what was supposed to be a fun comedy reboot turn into a gender/political issue: If you saw it and liked it, you hated the original and supported Clinton. If you didn't, you were a toxic fanboy who supported Trump. The movie itself is....fine. Honestly, what makes me angry isn't the all-female cast, it's that the cast and director are hilarious comedians who made great comedies before (like Bridesmaids), and it couldn't deliver for some reason.

OK let's get one thing clear. Remakes are good NO MATTER who does them... IF.. THEY ARE DONE RIGHT. There are times Remakes surpass the Original.
@Tareltonlives2 жыл бұрын
Remakes aren't necessarily bad- people seem to miss that. Ben Hur was a remake. The Birdcage was a remake. Stagecoach was a remake. Ten Commandmens. Homeward bound was a remake. Little Shop of Horrors was a remake. King Kong, Phantom of the Opera, Thief of Baghdad, and Mighty Joe Young had good remakes. Magnificent 7 was good.

I greatly enjoyed Ghostbusters 2016--like you said, it was a stupid and fun jaunt, but given you didn't follow it so much, I feel it important to say that not only was the situation with the movie very misogynistic, it was also EXTREMELY racist in regards to Leslie Jones.

I'm very happy to see a movie led by women, but I did not finish this movie. I was watching with my brother, and had to go to work in the morning, so we had to cut it off towards the end with the intent to finish it, but I forgot about it entirely lol. I liked the original. I'm not sure why I was so bored by this one.

I don’t remember too much about the movie, but I do remember not finding it all that funny. It’s meh, but not terrible lol

I loved the 2016 Ghostbusters film. Melissa McCarthy only slightly got on my nerves and I’ll watch Leslie Jones read the phone book so I was good.

I feel like this is a good study for analyzing how a camp cult classic can create the very thing it sets out to dismember. Serious moviegoers. Anyone who takes the original GB’s that seriously clearly didn’t get the premise of the reboot. You can still dislike the reboot for the simple fact it’s a reboot but to try and use talking points that could easily be hurled against the original kinda misses the mark in my opinion.
@VampyBlood172 жыл бұрын
Also I’ll admit I wasn’t too into the GB’s reboot when it came out but it was quickly forgotten by myself and many others as just a failed attempt at reviving an old franchise for those nostalgia bucks

I like afterlife but i grew up with the older Ghostbusters movies..in saying that positive on this movie I like Leslie she honestly reminded me of the older one her comedy wasn't over the top nor did she under act so I did enjoy her....the rest of the characters including thor made it very hard to get through that movie...and nothing to do with girls just bad writing it went camp version but just missed the camp.

I think that one vine summarized people's reaction to this movie pretty well.

It's an ok film, but nothing special and not well written. I feel like the controversy was blown out of proportion for advertising. Using bad publicity to promote the film instead of focusing on the good things about it. It was an annoying time to be on the internet. 😑

It bothers me that the first conclusion to why people didn't like this is misogyny. I love watching all female casts, for me I get annoyed when anything is remade or rebooted because why not be original, but Im sure there where people upset about the other as well.
@hope-cat48942 жыл бұрын
I remember Angry Video Game Nerd saying he wouldn't watch the film because it felt like a cash grab and he got called a misogynist for it. Since when is it bad for people to not want to see a film based on a trailer? I do it all the time. I feel like legit criticism got lumped in with jerks online. Red Letter Media called it a non-troversy.

Yes... To me, this movie has some potential. But in the end, got squandered big time.

I genuinely love the original two Ghostbusters movies so much, I felt like the original cast meshed so well & they really managed to hit a sweet spot with their audience twice which is rare with sequels. When this reboot came out I was initially excited to see wut they would do with the content. I mean the original movies may be trash to some but for others who aren’t gender bias it’s something they hold dear so of course my only worries were if they would be able to hit the sweet spot again. Did they hit the sweet spot …no, but it wasn’t bad either. It was fun & it didn’t take itself to serious, like it had to be the exact same as the original & that was good enough. I see it as its own entity instead of trying to compare it as a continuation of their world because it doesn’t feel like it fits if I do. They made their own foot print with it & it’s awesome in that regard. Now Ghostbusters Afterlife with the grandkids storyline was such a perfect continuation & actually made me cry with how it was all connected, especially with how the payed homage to one of the main cast members who passed away in real life. They hit the sweet spot again with that one but that’s just my opinion as a fan🤷🏽♀️🥰👍🏽

The reboot was awful. It entirely deserved the criticism and backlash that it recieved.

While I think that this movies marketing was awful and I don't think a majority of people who didn't jive with this movie were misogynistic (and I'm kind of sick and tired people saying it was). This movie isn't the worst. My big problem is that the good jokes were just okay and the bad jokes were yikes. Plus I don't feel like the characters in this movie have any distinctive personalities like with the original. I didn't like the movie, but its not terrible.

The original team (writers, director, actors) couldn't even make another good Ghostbusters, and before the female Ghostbusters was even an idea rumors of another movie with different (male) actors in the role I don't think set the community too alight. Fans just really like the first movie with those characters and actors, and they want more of that, but the sequel showed how little you can push this concept and these characters beyond that first movie without devolving into arbitrarity (Is that even a word?). And people I guess conveniently forgot about that with the advent of Ghostbusters '16, blaming its quality on women and wokeness, eventhough the main message of Ghostbusters 2 was a rather corny 'there is too much hate, we must all be nice to eachother'.

This movie definitely isn't as bad as people like to act like it is, and it's interesting how loud the uproar was vs. the next to nothing I've heard about the new Ghostbusters that came out in 2022. It's almost as if everything women songs held to an impossible standard where they need to be perfect in every way or else it's considered a failure 🤔

I think the problem it's because Paul Feig made this. Feig's comedy movies are mostly unfunny cringe (The Heat was the worst about that) and Melissa McCarthy is H-A-M. Wiig, Jones and MacKinnon can't do much against a terrible script and a lousy director.
@corinnastoddard95582 жыл бұрын
I don't think the negative opinions about the female cast came from "misogyny" or anyone feeling "oppressed". The issue was that it would be shitty because the focus wasn't making a good movie, it was about fake feminism and spreading a "woke" message, which is exactly what happened.
