Here in the Philippines singing is a part of our culture. I have a friend, he thinks that he can't sing very well and shy but his family push him to sing, then one day he tried to sing a song called There's No Easy Way. He nailed it! Look now, he's one of the most popular singer in our campus 😄

When I was a kid, my family and I used to go to the public market every Saturda/Sunday at 7 p.m to watch the weekly singing contest named "AMATEUR HOUR". There were age brackets for contestants, from kids to senior citizens. Until now, in every community Fiesta, singing contest is the highlight of the activities. Such kinds of contest have encourage many Filipinos to give their best shots knowing that it can change their lives into future singers. On the other hand, singing has been embedded in our culture. My talent is painting. But I love to sing than painting because it can ease my mood and makes me cheerful amidst of stress. It's a stress reliever for all of us. No wonder we love to sing in our daily activities.

I was stationed on a supply ship out of Guam in the mid 80s. Got to the PI many times during that time. The world is discovering what we all saw in the bars and clubs there without the expense of traveling there. The old guy who sounded like Willie Nelson or the young band that could double for Van Halen. I've also seen the true definition of poverty there. Family is everything. Still the nicest people I met overseas. Arnel Pineta brought the awareness to American shores. KZbin and talent shows have done the rest. Love the music coming out of the PI. It's true, Filipinos are music lover. As Filipino, music becomes part of our culture, it helps us relief our stress especially when we sing we feel we release our emotions and depressions. When we are depress the more we become passionate to feel the song we sing, and every lyrics or messages of the songs hit our emotions and that's how it help our emotions to release through the song we sing. That's why some singers when they sing, you can feel their emotions through their songs, their songs approach your heart and you can also feel their emotions through their songs. And even in history way back decades ago, if you just know the old part of our history called "Harana", it is one of the proof that Filipinos really loves music. By the way, sorry for my bad english grammar, LOL ^_^

I read in our history that during our pre hispanic period, our legends and history were always told by our ancestors thru singing. Since that is their way for our people to know and remember it , becouse at that time we only have an oral tradition. The spanish friars adopted it by introducing Christ Passion during Lent by singing it to every villages. As people gathered to listen , it become a tradion that is found only in the Philippines.
@Genkuro8 жыл бұрын
That was insightful, but what he did not mention, and I believe he wasn't able to see, is that music has been ingrained in our culture deep, even before the advent of the karaoke. We have songs for every occasion and from the celebration of life to the anguish of death. We have tribal songs from every province, we have kundiman, we have songs to woo girls called Harana (not generally practiced anymore). We have oyayi or hele equivalent to your lullaby's. To give you a sample, I present music of the Kalinga people of the Cordillera. This is just one. Each island has their own unique music. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGTViWaHbL9ompo

One other thing, which i believe is a great strength of filipinos, is they truly RECOGNIZE GREAT SONGS that are sung by great singers who they practice to emulate every chance they get. When practice makes perfect, in time these filipinos become perfect like the great singers they idolize. In america and other countries, great music is just FLEETING --music dictated by commercial and marketing aspects cashing in on new singers, new fads, and striking the iron while still hot for the potential to create greater sales out of these. Filipinos hold onto a great song like it was a rare gold nugget. The song and its singer linger in filipino culture unbelievably for decades --long after the song and singer faded and died in the country they became famous at.
@chiriorozco8 жыл бұрын
I guess one main reason why Filipinos sing well would be their soul. We grew up with much connection to our souls. Singing is an expression that connects us to our souls. Getting any benefit like money or fame from singing would just be secondary...

All he said were true. Aside from being born with a good singing voice, we love singing by nature that's why it seems like we practice singing all the time. And with the help and support of our family and friends, we tend to make a living out of it while enjoying our passion and reaching our dream to become good singers if not the best. Yes, we actually are the friendliest people in the world! We are also the most hospitable. When we have visitors, we always make them feel comfortable and at home every time. We instantly make friends with a stranger if we feel comfortable with them. I know the no. 1 rule "don't talk to strangers" but I think because we are very optimistic people that we tend to become more trusting and accommodating. I think we are the only nation that when natural disasters comes across our country, you could still us smiling and making light of the situation just to be able to give strength and assurance to our family and friends and even to ourselves as well. Thank you for thinking that we Filipinos really are the best singers in the world. Kudos!

Generally, Filipino are just simple passionate about signing that is why they we can sign any songs for as long as we how to read the words...like Chinese, Cantonese, German, French or any other songs. Passion to Music is the only secret for us Filipino. We do not want to compete, we just simple want to sing, but eventually because of social media and progress of competition In the world filipino got also interested to participate because they can get money if they win as well.

Hi Dan. I believe you will like this FYI, STANFORD UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS DISCOVER MUSIC GENE AMONG FILIPINOS, And I quote " Researchers at the Department of Genetics of Stanford University School of Medicine have uncovered the gene responsible for making Filipinos such good singers and musicians. It's called PH-13 found only among Filipinos. Researchers studied over 2000 individuals,500 of whom were of Filipino heritage with the rest equally divided among White,Blacks and Native Americans.All respondents were pre-screened and auditioned for their musical ability. At the conclusion of the six-month study which involved blood tests. MRIs of the vocal chords and eardrums, as well as invasive procedures to obtain the genetic samples, the researchers announced the discovery of the gene responsible for the musical talent. While a few African-Americans exhibited an almost undetectable level of the music gene,100% of the Filipinos in the study tested positive for PH-13. We have finally found the answer to the nagging question on why Filipinos are always winning in music competitions, the researchers said" " Could this also be the reason why almost all Filipino v household have a Karaoke machine? ".

There is more to singing than most of the people does not realize. Singing for Filipinos is a way of living.

Not only karaoke, fan of ballads and singers with high notes. and for family support...as a Filipino..we are emotional, are vocal to what we feel...when happy we sing...when sad...we sing...music becomes the household stuff..that's it..

Nothing and no one from any country can beat Filipino singers..they are the best singers in the world!

I think one major reason Filipinos can handle difficult songs with high notes is that the original love songs and patriotic songs of the Philippines, like the Kundimans, are replete with these features, so kids hear these songs sang to them by their mothers from the time they were babies. Listen to Sylvia la Torre and Ruben Tagalog of the mid forties and you'll see (rather, hear) what I mean.

Just some additional trivia info. The top export of the Philippines is her people - OFW (overseas Filipino workers). Number one are domestic helpers and a close second are the performers/artists. In most of the top hotels/bars in Asia, a filipino band/artist is most likely performing daily. Local competition is intense in the Philippines so before you can even get a gig overseas, you have to prove yourself to be special.

Our performers and maids are not top exports of the Philippines. Can you please research the economic status of PH before putting something out of proportion

BRey rey and most domestic helpers were professionals.

Ask ye shall receive..... The top exports of the Philippines are Integrated Circuits ($17.1B), Computers ($6.44B), Office Machine Parts ($4.37B), Semiconductor Devices ($3.65B) and Nickel Ore ($2.9B), using the 1992 revision of the HS (Harmonized System) classification. Its top imports are Integrated Circuits ($9.7B). OFW's are estimated to send back $30B in remittances this year.

It's a bit insulting if you read it that way but truth is, yeah! I'm a daughter of an OFW, and hey! I'm proud. It's just saddening to see that others will talk about our parents as "exports," "products" which is normally used for things, non-living things.

This is very true Filipinos love ballads more than any other type of music. And hitting high notes are a ritual to most of us LOL
