Yes I agree. I wish Cartoon Network hadn’t dumbed down Star Wars so much and made the sith/separatist a joke. Dude killed over a hundred Jedi in legends and you’re telling me wimpy little padawan Asoka could defeat him every time when grievous killed Jedi masters like Shak Tii

@@lawrencetalbot8346 Whats Sad is Lucas wanted Grievous to be a foreshadow to Anakin becoming Vader but canon actually does a better job of that than Canon does. I respect George and his opinions but I still believe the Legends Grievous better represented a proto-Vader than canon Grievous did.

@Pat did you ever read the clone wars comics? He gets flushed out a lot more in there, as well as we start to see a skins darker side come out. I really wish the show took inspiration from the comics. They were much darker when it came to the atrocities of the Jedi, as well as did a better job flushing out characters such as Ventris’s fall to the dark side, Mace Windu being darker and more powerful than what’s shown, and showing the overall toll the war had on the Jedi/showing the battle droids to be a lot more deadlier

Yea they should of had leaned into the cybernetics with multiple lieutenants under him. Each of them could still be the minor threat of the week while also giving us something different. Also I know that metal gear rising already did it but I think that the Jedi hearing the death cries of people who aren't in control of themselves would fit better especially with order 66 eventually coming. Plus as long as they were half decent I think that they could have sold the models of 4-6 villains. Would also balance some star wars games better to.

I liked animated Clone Wars Grievous in any scene without a main character. You really got to see Grievous at full potential when his opponent doesnt have plot armor. Even when losing against the Gungans or winning against a naive padawan, Grievous instilled a cold, aggressive anger to those around him. Even though the gungans knew their emps would disable him, you can see their nervousness when he did not hesitate to fight while disadvantaged.

Grievous had another weakness you missed. In the novels, Count Dooku during training constantly criticized Grievous for being TOO aggressive in lightsaber combat. Grievous did not know how to pace himself, conserve movement, and fight a longer term lightsaber battle. It's why Obi-Wan and other Jedi Masters tended to beat out Grievous in lightsaber duels. Grievous did not listen to Dooku's advice to not always be 100‰ aggressve, and to instead focus on slowly breaking apart his Jedi enemies bit by bit. To tire them out, grind down their defenses, and be more calculating. Count Dooku blamed himself for this flaw in Grievous' lightsaber training and trained other apprentices to avoid this flaw that Grievous had.

I disagree. Tartakovsky's Grievous's entire introduction scene, where his army is destroying a downed acclamator only to instantly stop at a wordless command, all the way to fighting multiple jedi masters at once and not even breaking a sweat is excellent characterization. It establishes that Grievous is the pinnacle of the CIS's military. He's a brilliant strategist ("Never have we been out-maneuvered by droids. His strategy is without flaw"), a ruthless killer ("Know that I, General Grievous, am not completely without mercy. I will grant you a warrior's death"), and most importantly, when he talks shit, he actually has the skill to back it up (I would use another quote here, but when Grievous is kicking ass, he's dead silent because he doesn't have to say anything). When Grievous was reduced to a Saturday morning cartoon villain who twirls his mustache and runs away, it was a reduction of everything his character had previously been established to be. He was a mediocre strategist in command of idiots and he lost every fight he had. The drastic shift from Tartakovsky's Grievous to Lucas's Grievous is why people think the first is the best: Tartakovsky's Grievous is a real villain. He's a real threat. How often did you feel Lucas's Grievous was an actual threat to the main characters?

This video made me realize just how different the characterizations of Legends and Canon Grievous are. Because I would argue that the Canon version of the character is actually more human than Vader, at least pre-Empire Strikes Back. While he still is cold, analytical and ruthless, he actively revels in this. He lashes out in anger, he's actively gleeful when he's winning, he even showed COMPASSION when mourning the death of Gor. If anything, Canon Grievous' biggest weakness (aside from plot armor and the incompetence of his subordinates) is his own insecurity. Though he would never admit, no matter how many Jedi he kills, no matter how many armies he crushes, his power will never truly be a match for the Force. And while that recognition of his own shortcomings did make him keenly aware of when it was better to cut his losses and fight another day, it also meant that he would often get caught up in the moment whenever he was winning, which would occasionally leave his prey an opportunity to counter or escape.

In Legends Grievous also shows mercy, he spared Shak Ti's life and came to respect various individuals such as: Lushros Dofine (his captain), the Jedi of Hypori (because he wanted to give them a "warrior death" instead of ordering his droids to annihilate them), he had great respect for Dooku seeing him as a mentor who saved him from death and gave him the opportunity to take revenge (which is why he seems to sadly say to Sidious that Dooku had died, although tragically this relationship It was one-sided because Dooku saw him only as a tool), Grievous also respected Wat Tambor a bit for the courage he showed during his escape from a maximum security prison of the Republic (this has nothing to do with TCW), and finally Grievous respected B'ink Utrila for not showing fear when he had almost defeated her and was going to die (this happened during the battle of Coruscant, and in fact he respected her so much that after killing her he did not take the lightsaber from she), this is not to mention that he decided to personally fight Obi Wan on Utapau even though his droids could have killed him in seconds.

First, I would definitely like to see more of these character profiles, maybe next could be Thrawn or Ackbar since you mentioned them here. Second, great video like always, Geetsly. However, the one flaw with it was including that episode in the Clone Wars where Grevious was beaten by Gungans. The rest of the clips from the series in the video either portrayed Grevious right or at least decently. It's not the fact that he lost to the Gungans, I mean they had him outnumber by a large margin, and as HK-47 pointed out when it comes to battling powerful Jedi when your that outnumber and being attacked from all sides, it doesn't matter how powerful you are you will be overwhelmed. The real problem with that episode is the fact that he only killed like 4 Gungans, he should have been able to kill at least 50 to 70 of them before they took him down.

Every time I see that fight scene between Obi Wan and Grievous in RotS, I think about a Nick Gillard panel I attended. I went to the Star Wars Celebration shortly before RotS came out and the first panel I went to was with Nick Gillard. He talked about the lightsaber fights in all of the Star Wars movies, but more specifically the fights in RotS. He said that the fight that caused him the most annoyance was the one between Obi Wan and Grievous because of Grievous's 4 arms. It's been a very long time since the panel, but I think that the problem was coordination between the 4 lightsabers and making it look good. So Nick's solution: "Cut off 2 of the arms."

His best portrayal is still in the CW 2003, everything you said here just backs that up. He had the same cold blooded war monger’s domineer in that series, the only difference is that at least there he had the combat prowess and character introduction to back up the terror that he represented. The first rule of villain introduction is that, in order to truly convince your audience of the threat the villain presents, you should make them at least mostly successful in their first confrontation with the hero/heroes.

The only person he ever fights in Clone Wars is Obi-wan, who needs to stay alive for ROTS. Remember Massacre? @@samueldimmock694 Star Wars Insider did short biographies of each of the original twelve. It was called, "Who's Who, Imperial Grand Admirals", Grand Admiral Zaarin has an entire PC game about his duel with Thrawn, it's called TIE Fighter, the Essential Guide to Warfare has both a monologue from Grand Admiral Teshik and articles about the Grand Admirals. The game Hidden Empire tells about Grand Admiral Batch's TIE Phantom project. There's also a good channel called Star Wars Galactic Empire that does short videos on each Grand Admiral. Each of the Grand Admirals were dangerous in their own ways, Zaarin for instance nearly killed Palpatine, Vader and Thrawn during his Insurrection, he invented the TIE Avengers and Defenders. Teshik fought against the entire Rebel Fleet at Endor when the rest of the Imperials fled and lasted four hours against Ackbar's entire fleet in a single star destroyer, Grunger took over vast swaths of the Outer Rim when he went rogue, Pitta depopulated entire sectors, Tigellinus maneuvered himself into control of Imperial Oversector Center, Declann could use battle meditation, Takel could use precognition and light mind reading. Even Il-Raz was a master of propaganda and wiped out many worlds when he went nuts after Endor etc.

@@grandadmiralzaarin4962 I read Teshik's monologue and how he fought the Rebel Alliance, which was the main reason why I was hesitant to say that the other Grand Admirals couldn't match Thrawn. Grievous is my favourite character, but the problem I had with him is that he was described as this killing machine that multiple Jedi at once could not stop, yet we don't see that at all in the movies or the clone wars series. I feel like I was told 1 thing and shown the other.

Unfortunately the only characters he ever faces are characters you already know won't die. Greivous could go all out in 2003 Clone Wars against Mace Windu because ROTS hadn't come out yet, so his death couldn't be accounted for. When Greivous isn't fighting plot-armoured Obi-Wan he can still be a badass, like in the Clone Wars episode Massacre

Imagine what the Galactic Civil War could have been like, if Grievous saw the writing on the wall during the Clone Wars, and completely defected from the CIS, disappearing for a time, only to re-emerge with a personal fighting force that would act as a third party of sorts in the GCW; a defintie enemy to the Empire, but also no real friend to the Rebellion, either.

Grievous and Durge are my favorite characters from The Clone Wars era. They’re the embodiment of what it means to have an “over the top” character in a good way. An ancient alien bounty hunter comprised of nerves and muscles that he can extend like tentacles encased in, basically, power armor, that’s Durge. An acrobatic cyborg trained in all forms of lightsaber combat who isn’t even force sensitive, that’s Grievous. Both characters are badass in their own rights. Also, on a side note, Durge is officially gonna be canon again thanks to the War Of The Bounty Hunters comic series.

to fight monsters, you must sometimes create monsters of your own. many people considered the Jedi to be monsters, due to their actions leading up to the Clone Wars, and throughout it. General Grievous was the monster created to counter them. but his cybernetics were only half of the monster that he would come to be. as stated in the video, he became a monster slowly and subtly after watching his people being subjugated and enslaved. his close friend being killed was ultimately the catalyst that set things in motion past the point of no return. this was made worse when the Jedi got involved and started cutting down Grievous' people, who viewed the Jedi as monsters. Grievous would get his chance to get strike at the Jedi not long after that. even when he was recovering from Mace Windu using Force Crush on his chest, he was not to be taken lightly.

Grievous’ problem in episode 3 I think was that he had this reputation for being this unstoppable Jedi killer, but we’re only told that, we never see him do anything to earn that reputation. He just runs away or gets defeated. We should have had a scene where grievous slaughters a group of Jedi and takes their lightsabers, then later in the fight with Orbi Wan we see he’s using their lightsabers against him, and maybe Obi Wan senses this too. Could’ve added a more fearsome appearance for him
