Minor correction if I may, CB skip Is a day time event and rare at night. However you are right on everything else as I understand thing. And yes I do use CB, Ham & GMRS and when I worked for the police and sheriff’s departments I used their radios which were at that time in the 155 MHz. Good video as always I enjoy watching them and I do learn from your videos as well.
@badluckbart34248 сағат бұрын
You're incorrect. Amplitude Modulation signals "skip" at night, when part of the atmosphere rises and the signals (which "bounce" off of it) refract further. This doesn't happen in the daytime. The CB (AM) "skip" you hear during the day are (illegally) power amplified hundred of times higher than allowed.

I was on my CB radio today, per usual as I'm truck driver. There's a lot of idiots on there with high power ruining the sound and true effect of the radio and its intended purpose. But CB radio has benefits, especially if you know the local channels and how to tune your radio properly. As a new GMRS radio operator, I will say that I don't hear the garbage like I do on CB frequencies. So I would venture to say with the federal laws in place, the responsibility that comes with the license it will not be anything close to CB radio.

CB is great. Yeah, there’s some trash talk but usually just on one or two of the 40 channels. You can get emergency help on the road with a CB (try that with GMRS), notification of traffic and weather issues, and sometimes information from other states (since CBs travel state to state even if the signals mostly don’t). GMRS can sound better in certain circumstances and does allow for repeater use, but those repeaters are mostly silent . So yeah, GMRS might be a good choice for a group of guys going off road, but not so much that it is worth giving up some of the CB advantages IMHO. Just learn how to use the squelch and how to change to an unused channel.
@dguiley13 сағат бұрын
So if I put my CB on an unused channel how will I get information on road conditions? It's been pretty useless for me. The issues like high noise floor, ands guys jamming the channel from 3 states away have driven truckers away from CB. I'll bet less than half the trucks on the road have them anymore, and less use them. I've broadcast about road emergencies and nobody acknowledges. Sometimes they turn them on only AFTER they are in a traffic jam and want to know what lane to use.
@audiomaker112 сағат бұрын
@ Yeah, put it on an unused channel if you want to avoid road chatter and skip…basically to use like you would GMRS. Put it on 19 if you need help. Ya know, it may not be instant help but 100x more likely than calling out on GMRS. Right now with the high solar cycle, skip is annoying as we get out of state transmissions and this will continue for the next year, but I never have an issue squelching this out. I have a CB in my vehicle and honestly it’s rare that anyone is on (19), but if there is an accident or similar, truckers coming the other way will generally be reporting what to expect ahead.

I agree with your comments regarding skip for CB and how it doesn’t work that way for GMRS. I don’t think the license requirement and call sign requirement is an important factor at all. “Citizens Band (CB) radio stopped requiring a license in the United States on April 28, 1983 when the FCC phased out individual licensing for CB radio operation; this change was due to widespread disregard of licensing regulations and the large number of CB users. “
@erikferguson7115 сағат бұрын
I could see this happening in the future simply due to the overlap with FRS and the fact that bubble pack radios were manufactured with both FRS/GMRS in the same radio for years with users either not reading the toilet paper manuals that come with them, or simply disregarding the rules.

Earlier this year, I drove from Northern Va to ABQ New Mexico, around 2K miles, most on I 40. I bought a compact am/fm /weather/ CB for my truck, for traffic chatter and notifications about speed traps. in the 3 days of travel that I had. the CB was almost silent the entire trip. no speed trap reports on the air (but Waze did that job, and did it well) only time I heard folks on the CB was if there was A traffic situation, THEN the truckers would be on the air, asking WTF is slowing folks down, and if an accident, where it was, and what lane to be in to move around the accident quickly. that was about it. yes there was the occasional "knucklehead" yapping on, but those were not on the channels that the truckers use, seems that the higher channels are where a lot, but not all, of the self proclaimed experts would park their soapbox. funny this is that I also have a GMRS handheld, and I saw that there are a few repeaters around Albuquerque. I think the owners of the GMRS repeater was a HAM operator, because of the additional rules and self imposed restrictions that he had for "Policing" the repeater channels. the owner claimed that the GMRS channels were basically having the "Just like CB chatter issues" but while there, I listened to those channels, and the traffic was very light and basically older folks in RV's chatting to each other at a local RV park not too far from where I was at. so the "Propaganda" from SAD HAMS about how anything other than a HAM radio being junk, is just that, Propaganda. most folks are using Phone apps tied into their vehicles infotainment system to get the data that used to be conveyed by word of mouth back in the 70 -90ies. GMPR is good for dedicated small group communications, and CB is a novelty that is slowly dying off as us older folks figure out what I did, that CB is not giving you the info it used to, way back in the last century. HAMS , I think, are pushing this to get more folks into HAM, but except for lonely guys in their basements trying to talk to strangers hundreds of miles away, it too is dying the slow death of disinterest that CB has. Just my two cents.
@Don123-x8q10 сағат бұрын
Bunch of lonely old guys on Ham, sounds about right. That said, there is still significantly more activity at least on the Ham Repeaters than GMRS. GMRS here is crickets. To my surprise, in addition to FM operation, it has "privacy codes" (which as we all know, aren't private). I think in FM mode and with squelch tones engaged, it might be a viable alternative to GMRS for some things. For example, staying in touch while traveling in a convoy is perfectly doable with FM/CTCSS. Of course, you won't hear all the people on AM talking about road conditions, which is the reason I wanted it, but you wouldn't get that on GMRS either.

I just squelch out the DXers unless I'm in the mood to listen in. Turn up the squelch and you have a pretty useable radio.. if you can find anyone to talk to..

I put CB radios in 2 of my pickups a little over a year ago and am disappointed in how useless they generally are. Between the noise floor being very high most of the time and the sheer number of people using ch 19 to DX, it has ceased to be a common platform for travel information . I estimate way less than half the trucks on the road are using CB anymore. It's disappointing really. Many times I've broadcast an alert about some hazard ahead and nobody responds. Of course, maybe I should try a different language to be more. effective.

I actually hope GMRS takes off and is major mumbo crowded... I just hope it's not abused and smucked up. Ham radio has evaporated and I miss the traffic... It's hard to talk to people when there are no people.

I still have my old Midland in my truck, and I can still use it to talk to my buddy, but we squelch the shit out of it so as to not hear the crap. Most of the time we just use my Midland GXT ht's, but it's a pain if you drop it while driving.

Didn't CB radio require a license and broadcasting a call sign at one point too, just like GMRS? That obviously didn't stop it from going to hell. But at least the wavelength will keep transmissions local and help cut out the crap.

like'd and comment'd - poor gmrs doesn't have a chance then, so useless and a waste of time. Wonder when the fcc will send my license refund for all the trolling I was doing on the frequencies and only heard people doing active things.

CH 6 is the Circus Channel. Try CH 38 LSB. All full of radio checks.

I live in Canada, GMRS is useless here. only 2 watts maximum using tiny handhelds unless your a forklift operator, Mall worker, hiker/camper and parents keeping track of their kids, It is little better than FRS.

What was the name of that movie in the 70's. Had that obscure male actor in it. Him his dad and his girlfriend run a gas station or some shit like that..CB gets outa hand in town.. becomes a Payton place.. everyone in everyone's business. They break bad. start clipping antennas, smashing equipment.. anyone remember that? Seen at the drive in as a kid and just haven't seen it since.

I think a lot of people make this claim not based on the technical feasability but because of the idiots and rule-breakers on it. I just listened to an hour or so of yammering between 2 guys on a local GMRS repeater debating whether Digital modes (specifically P25) are permitted by the rules. While they are correct in that there's nothing explicitly forbidding digital (in plain non-obscured text) only encryption... I am of the understanding it's FM or short data bursts... name a radio that is Part 95 certified that does P25... ? Is there one? This was a linked repeater system, they were across the country from me based on the conversation but no actual evidence since they never once during the hour long conversation stated their call signs. It has begun! Stupidity replicated across a vast repeater network, who needs great propogation conditions when they just use the internet? Ah the good ol internet, a megaphone for stupidity!

What ruined local CB in my area are those who take a 4W license free radio and strap on 100-600W. cheaper radios pick them up on a band up to 6 channels wide at times, centered on different freqs, not just ch6. Nothing but inane banter between anonymous men, music, and roger beep fights. I moved to GMRS, although fewer have it where I am.

Gee back in the day to operate a CB radio you had to hace a license from the FCC but over time they drop the licensing requirement . This could happen to GRMS, not saying it would but it is always possible .

Yes you are correct about the range. I disagree though about the rest. They dont sell linear amplifiers on Tik Tok, Temu or whatever by the tens of thousands. The may be less radios but these cheap junk radios are going to ruin Gmrs and ham unless the government gets control on it.
@stanleybest883310 сағат бұрын
You don't help the average newbie at all. A 4 watt CB listens to static, and can talk 75 miles in a lot of situations. It's much more natural than any squelch. A SSB CB talks hundreds of miles, except continents, so you're not alone on any ocean. I use the FRS as a 7 mile toy, but have turned down GMRS consistently. Keep your squelch.
@ssrrocks2217 сағат бұрын
I have been a radio operator for many years. They said much the same when Ham radio would become just like CB was in the 70s. after removing the code part of the test for a license. That wasn't the case. GMRS has its place just like ham radio and CB. I highly doubt GMRS will replace CB. CB had its heyday back in the 70s. The only reason we hear so much about GMRS today is because of the cheap Chinese radios on the market today. Most people imhave talk to all says the same, they wouldn't spend the money to just talk a few blocks. A couple of Bofaung radios might be ok in a camp grounds but with cellphones, GMRS has very limited use even with repeaters.
@TheNotaRubicon16 сағат бұрын
That's really weird because I regularly use my GMRS HTs (including Baofengs) to talk several miles (no repeater) and use the mobile GMRS radio in my Jeep to regularly talk even further.. It is also normal for me to talk with people over 100 miles away via any of the several GMRS repeaters in my area. I guess i'm just doing it wrong .. But thanks for letting us know that you've been a ham radio operator for many years - we would have _never_ guessed.

In some parts, you may be right, but I live in the hills overlooking a vast valley of slums where most of my family and friends live and I couldn't talk any of them into getting a CB, an amp and a 8.5ft antenna to keep in touch with each other, but I DID talk some of them into getting GMRS radios and mag-moumt antennas. I can even talk with some of them simplex on my Yagi. Two of the repeaters of use to me are busy, and two others aren't, but work great. Seems like GMRS already did replace CB.

My Baofeng regularly reaches 3 miles. It's a hacked ham radio transmitting on GMRS too. I am in the slum's in the valley and talk to the overlords above mostly strange men and sometimes children.
