It is definitely possible to almost eliminate ad-blocking on KZbin website. Google could, for instance embed ads directly into videos and/or add a million checks. The use of intrusive techniques may annoy tech-savvy users but they probably don’t like being forced to see ads anyway. I don’t think people would want to pirate KZbin videos so that don’t see a 15-second ad.

@@Y2B123 directly into video ? like how, you mean like literally cut the video put a ad there and then play that video. nah its a nightmare to deal with on the software side of thing. 1) it will slow down video load times coz video rendering takes time and youtube serves million of people every second. 2) ad's are not preset as everyone knows they are served on the go so you will be rendering ads in videos on the go. all of this will polly cost more in server infrastructure than adblocking ever will imo. also it what about premium users. i guess a different api for premium using might work. lol imagine faster video load as a feature for premium users

If I'm correct, some video platforms serve their videos in chunks - so once you get to a certain part of the video, the client will then request the next chunk of the video. In this case, you could send the ad as it's own chunk, but send the same response data as you would for normal chunks of the video. Of course, ad blockers might then start keeping a database of video data for known chunks containing ads. The solution to this might be to add a bit of static fuzz or white noise to some of the frames, meaning the video data for that ad is a bit difference. Yes, this would mean that you would have to do a bit of rendering - but you would only need to do so every few hours, as you can send the chunk with white noise to many users before the ad blocker updates it's data base (and the client fetches the new ad blocking database). The server would likely spend far more work processing new actual video uploads (things like compressing the video) then having to occasionally add white noise to an ad to throw off ad blockers. Of course, I could be completely wrong.

Honestly? If Google is indeed following this approach, that is making ads less and less intrusive and annoying... that is a move that I welcome. The very point of an adblocker is to get rid of ads that are ANNOYING, obtrusive... ones that ruin your browsing experience. If they can (and it seems so) tone it down to a level that it's almost invisible, or at least not annoying, then by all means, that is a far more welcome approach.

Tech savy? False. A decent chunk of the desktop userbase uses adblock if they can use it. Now if you're talking mobile adblock... Then yes, that's for tech savy people only. It's why mobile users cost far more to target. I literally stopped using google search because they were doing A/B testing and made me scroll 4 times before a non-ad link showed up. Google lost a mobile user that day. The majority of ads I've ever encountered have been hot garbage but very occasionally you find something amazing. That's super rare though.

Louis Rossman says his pay through ad clicks is almost nothing. He said if you sent him $1 once, that would be more money than watching all of his videos with ads. He advises using ad blocker to watch videos and sent creators a buck or two instead that way google doesn't even get a cut. This is of course directed at people willing to send a little coin to their favorite content creators. not the ones who want everything for free.

my only "issue" with this is that everyone is calling it a "loss" as if they first had $35 billion and we somehow took that from them. That's not a loss, it's unachieved potential gains. I've never understood the ad model. For me the best way to convince me to not buy a product is to show me how much money they're willing to waste convincing me to buy a product instead of applying that money to product development. I understand that they need to inform people that they have a product to sell, but I only need to see the ad for it once, not 10 times an hour every hour. Also if I'm convinced that I want something I saw in an ad I'll preferentially get the cheaper genaric version of it because I don't support wasting money on ad's

@@charlech It's an interface that ad blockers need to work properly. In a few months Google will start removing it from Chrome (this will also affect MS Edge and every other browser based on Chrome). After that ALL Chrome ad blockers will either not work or be less effective. Time to move to Firefox or Safari if ad blocking is important to you.

That's definitely an important purpose to be sure (and its why I refuse to turn off adblock even for websites I'd really like to support - can't trust the advertisers). But its hardly the only - or even main - purpose. The main purpose is to deal with those pages that fill 80% of the screen real estate with ads to the point where you have trouble even finding the tiny frame where the actual content resides. And then when you do find an ad that interests you, you click on it and you're directed to another page full of ads trying to upsell you 17 other products and once you sift through that mess you discover they pulled a fast food burger trick on you - the ad looks fantastic but when you get to the actual purchase page it becomes obvious that they're just selling crap. (Goes back to not being able to trust the advertisers again. For a less nefarious reason this time, but no less annoying.) I mean you've never really been able to trust advertisers whether its in magazines and newspapers or on billboards or on TV or now on the internet. But the relatively low cost of internet advertising combined with ad platforms' sometimes-lax verification practices when onboarding advertising partners and well.. adblock or similar is all but necessary for anyone who spends more than a few minutes a day online.

Google is planning on removing manifest v2 in favor of v3. Manifest v3 will severely limit all adblockers since v3 doesn't allow for extensions to check urls which is something that all adblockers use to block ads.

Haven't used adblock in years, since they started the whole "less intrusive ads" allowance. Instead, I just download a custom hosts file that's updated occasionally for my desktop and block the most intrusive ones at my router, so I don't have to see them on any of my devices. Also, AdGuard on my mobile devices, when I'm not home.

Probably the biggest reason I started using ad blocking was that it got rid of the annoying ads on KZbin that one cannot skip like one can with a TV ad (after pausing for a while) or ad in the video itself. Those are the very worst ads for me. I would have minded ads a lot less if they did not exist. Currently I _finally_ have enough money that I can afford KZbin Premium without going broke, so that creators on KZbin can be paid despite my multiple layers of ad blockers. I wish a similar system existed that could be spread across all the other sites I visit. I cannot afford a subscription for every small site I visit for a bit, and am not willing to be harassed and brainwashed by ads, but would be happy to pay a decent sized blanket payment for everything as long as I can afford it.

I remember a KZbinr explaining to money they make from ads etc and also KZbin Premium. I think it was something like you needing to watch the channel for 20 years for them to get as much as if you donated 1$. So better just donate to the channels you like and continue blocking ads and ignoring Premium.

This video uses the term "adblock" to mean the actual extension with that name, and ad blockers in general. Google pays Adblock to whitelist their ads, but that is also the reason Adblock is not the recommended ad blocked to use, Ublock Origin is. It makes it sound like Google is happy you are blocking ads, and then gives arguments that only apply to Adblock, not ad blocking (with ad blockers that actually work), along with arguments that actually apply to all ad blockers, but that's not interchageable.

60% of youtube traffic comes from mobile devices ( unable to use adblock ). The only people who know about adblock are more 'tech savvy' because you have to find your way around extensions and settings etc. Chances are laptop users are majority of desktop devices ( I think anyway ) as it could be work laptop or so on. The only people who care about adblock are the PC users and that takes a minority now within the grand audience, so changing things related to adblock isn't going to make more money compared to algorithms + watch time. It's priority is far down the list.

I disagree that Google's main objective is attention. They only want to not lose attention because diverting attention to competitors can indirectly drop their own ad revenues... so their goal is still the ad revenues. They also have a side-goal of supporting government propaganda and corporatist government with censorship. I've been very confused as to why Google would allow something that blocks their own ads in their own app store for a long time. This makes sense now! Good explanation!

I have been using adblockers for years. I absolutely hate ads. When DVR was new, it was an amazing feeling to be able to fast forward through the commercials to continue watching my favorite shows. I rarely if ever watched them live from that day forward. I had even gone as far as to pirate some shows if I was forced to watch them without the ability to fast-forward (I'm looking at you, Comcast on-demand).

Even on TV, I record everything and skip past every add, station promo and other rubbish I simply do not wish to see. I stopped subscribing to Sky TV because they charge you a subscription and STILL show adds. The ultimate insult.

I almost never see ads anywhere on the web. I've been using ad lockers since ad lockers were a thing. It's also the reason I don't watch cable TV or listen commercial radio. I will not put up with ads constantly irritating me. Even before the internet I used to rip the intrusive ads out of magazines. I also don't use Googles browser or search engine. Sadly there is no alternative to KZbin, so I'm stuck with that, but still without ads on both desktop and mobile.

I use ad block on my computer. I also have an app that automatically skips ads when the 3 seconds is up on mobile KZbin. In the past I used a 3rd party version of the KZbin app that blocked ads, let me listen to music with the screen off and much more. I also rooted one of my old phones and installed a phone level ad block that blocked almost everything, everywhere on the phone. I guess you can say I have a history of not wanting to see ads.
