The doctor didn't charge him; the office did. It's like getting a free hamburger at a theme park: you still have to pay the entry fee. I sorta doubt Levy is the first person to complain. But maybe he'll be the first to sue?

Its actually fraud. Oral contracts are legal binding contracts. you can sue them. Idk how it exactly works but generally the bill is in your name as YOU are the service recipient which is paid by the insurance company on your behalf. So they cannot say that they didn't say they will bill insurance

Nah, dude. Talk to the doctor directly. I've absolutely had a dermatologists work with me on how much they would charge for a service, and the clinic honored it. This sounds like a misunderstanding between the doctor and the clinic staff. Edit: Although it is possible that the doctor was talking about just his services when he said it was free and that the clinic charges its own fee for any appointments conducted there. It is a bit strange, but sometimes doctors aren't employed by the clinic they are working at. YMMV

In the dictionary Free means Free. Here’s more sound friendly advice, it’s possible for you to challenge this, I don’t think the cost would be too much…but I do think without something written down you might have a problem. Written down contracts are generally best, verbal contracts or agreements are well not so good especially if there’s nothing or no one that witnessed. Basically, do you really want that x amount of money? An attorney might do it for free, but since it’s New York I am in doubt.
