Why I Bought a G87 BMW M2 | My New Daily!

Following the troubles I faced with my E90 335i, I realised I had to get into something newer for a while. I'd always lusted for an M car and knew the G87 M2 had been quietly growing on me for some time. Knowing it may well be one of the last 'true' M cars, I decided to go and try one out, and fell in love straight away.
Fast forward a few weeks, I couldn't be happier with the car and am really looking forward to creating plenty more videos on it in the near future.

i’ve already driven mine 9000 miles in 6-7 months. it’s been an excellent daily with the only complaint being the small fuel tank. you won’t regret it at all

I ordered a 2024 M2, sapphire black , carbon roof, carbon interior, phone charger, HK sound and bi-color wheels. I agree in black or mat colors the car looks so much better --- these colors seem to smooth out the body lines just a touch! I have been lucky enough to own a number of very nice a cars ----- a 1965 356 as well as a number of water cooled 911's, a 1998 M3 as well. All these cars had manual gear boxes. Lots has been said about this car and most of it from folks who don't own or live with one. I have had mine since last April and it has almost 4000 miles on it now. The car is everything you would expect from an M car --- quick, powerful, handles oh so well, it's almost point and shoot! The beauty of this one is it is livable on a daily basis which is so satisfying and something you look forward to every day! I will say the manual transmission for me is nonnegotiable, it's what connects you to the car, but that is becoming a lost art. I love the frozen grey, had it been available in 2024 it would have been a tough choice. I am 66 years old now and as said in the review the gas powered manual transmissions seem to waving goodbye. I won't make the same mistake I made with all the other cars ----- I put them in the garage , admired them and rarely drove them. This one will be different, there is nothing to wait for, this IS my daily driver and I intend to drive the wheels off it!!!

I have a g87. I love it. Exhaust note is the only thing that I would change on my car. Rest is all just perfect. Ample power for the road with daily comfort.

I own a 25 manual live 20 miles from the tail of the dragon and would not have the car any other way with the power of the engine I stay in 3rd and 4th and not many can keep up, what a car I keep brake and steering in comfort just love this car

I have the auto in Toronto Red which to my mind was the only decent original colour other than black. I have now done 4000km's and the engine has loosened up fantastically. One of the obvious improvements from a driving pov compared to my previous generation M2 is that it is far less skittish on uneven roads - all four wheels always seem to maintain good road contact because of the more sophisticated chassis and suspension. Loving it as a daily driver and for weekend blasts.

I changed my order from auto to manual. There are times I think the manual gear is a little long, but the car is so engaging. If it were a daily, or track i’d go auto. But, as a second fun car…shifting and getting better at that is fun.

5000 miles on my manual, long gearing helps the daily aspect dont worry about it at all can always tune around it. If youre going to be stuck in heavy traffic everyday auto would win out for me but otherwise love it

I sold BMW’s since 1975. I like them and my demo was a 7 series but with a stick. Always a stick it’s about the relationship. I have always wanted and bought a 996 Porsche 911. I was not disappointed but overjoyed. When you buy your next car look at the 911. 😊

I think these are actually amazing looking. The ones with the odd exhaust set up are very cool to and different for modern BMWs, assume it's some sort of option. However, it's just far to fast and modern for my liking and you'd have to be going series speeds to get the thrill factor of the older models. Still a very cool car!

I think they have the wheels backwards. I know they are doing it for looks, but for performance you want a smaller wheel with more sidewall in the back for better traction.

Nice car, not gonna lie I didnt like it at first and now I have the exact same colour as yours arriving. Only thing driving me insane is whether to PPF the car due to online horror stories (unless those are there to scare everyone)

I think a lot of stuff on the Internet is exaggerated, the frozen paints are actually pretty durable so I wouldn't stress too much but if you want it to stay perfect then probably best to just PPF it, atleast the front end of the car

Nice choice. But why didn’t you get the M2 LCi 480hp ? Was this in stock and didn’t want to wait ? We have seen 30-40whp more on the dyno with it.

Yeah it was more a wait time thing as I was in a bit of a situation with my last car, but tbf there aren't a huge number of changes with the LCI cars and I thought the power level was probably enough already 😂

@@FootToPedal understand, you can get the M2 LCi SW anyway without any unlock. Easy. But…just switch off sw updates in the menu. Warranty still remains 💪🏻 P.S. It’s quite a bit faster as we have tested on dragy

I bought mine new in September last year and sold it 8 months later, and replaced it with a 992 Carrera T. I found the M2 far too heavy on the type of roads I enjoy having a blast. The Carrera T has less power but offers me a more complete sports car experience.

is the frozen colours harder to fix / buff out when there are chips and stratches? compared to 'non-frozen' colours. what if getting regular paint and wrap it frozen instead?

Yeah because you essentially can't polish out scratches, it would have to be repainted. You could probably wrap frozen paint but not sure it would look as good as the proper stuff!

The colour is awesome and was my choice but was warned off it for protection / cleaning and paint matching ext. The styling in my opinion is great,so aggressive and the hate for it made me want it even more. I too have gone for the Auto. I think it suits the car better but i agree it could make it a bit disconnected. Get some cooler protection grills for the front,they are open to damage. If you want to squeeze the most performance out of this car the zf8 is a no brainer and it’s why I chose it (besides having a lot of time stuck in traffic). Yes the manual is more engaging but this car is a WEAPON and it’s optimized for the zf8 the only annoyance is some lag in manual shift mode vs DCT but you can’t have it all huh? The one thing that surprised me on comfort front is how little wind noise you have on highway even on super windy days and you can barely feel it either (btw I’m comparing this to my new high end Lexus not a Honda civic). Oh last thing, this thing looks great in person and gets a lot of attention so you are not always gonna be able to go under the radar u will get noticed.

There were several factors really, if you watch my last video you'll see I had been having a nightmare with my E90 335i and had been without the car for 6+ weeks by the time I bought this, LCI cars would have been a factory order with a lead time of 2-3 months and I really wanted something earlier than that. Another factor is that there aren't actually that many changes on the LCI and also that there were good deals on the pre-LCI cars!

I love it, I just ordered mine, but I was always afraid that this matte paint will be patchy and shiny over time, due to washing and wiping the car. What's your experience with the paintwork? You never worried about it? And does this paint job require any special treatment?

I'm not stressing over it because I intend to use the car properly so inevitably some marks will arise over time, however I got mine ceramic coated (check out our video) to give some protection from the elements. The paint seems to be fairly durable so far and with the ceramic coating I don't need to contact wash it very often which helps to reduce the chances of adding marks from washing. What I can say is the car looks absolutely amazing in this colour!

The ZF8 is the best transmission for the G87 M2.. it can hold lots of power, fast on up shifts and reliable.. but I find it too boring especially compared to the previous DCT. Those who complain about the manual in the G87 M2 probably never drove previous BMW vehicles with a manual transmission. I've owned an 135i, 335i, E46 M3, E92 M3, F87 M2C all in manual and NONE of those had a great manual gearbox.. so what's with this crazy expectation that the G87 should have had a better feeling manual? The manual in the G87 is not horrible like people makes it out to be.. it holds stock power well, easy to engage, easy to row through gears, has less rubber feeling than past BMW manuals. Unless you're strictly tracking the M2.. for spirited driving on back roads.. the manual transmission is way more fun than the auto ZF8.

Yeah thats fair, the big thing that did it for me was the gear ratios as I liked the appeal of the close spacing on the ZF8. It's a great gearbox and I have no complaints so far, for the power level of the car I think its well matched but I'm sure there are plenty out there who would prefer the manual!

Unfortunately the consistent comments about the ‘rubbery’ transmission and the optimal pairing with the ZF get you doubting things. Most of us do our driving on mountain roads and even on the track.. unless you are competing and out to get the fastest lap times.. I still prefer to row my own gears. Purist loves the manual because it rewards skill.. unlike an automatic where even my grandmother can drive it fast. ZF is good.. but like I said it's too boring.. if I was to go with an automatic it would have to be something like a DCT or PDK.

Thanks! Stay tuned on that one, I'm actually on the fence about PPF for a few reasons. One this car came with insurance for the paint, two the matte paints are more durable than people suggest and three the cost of PPF is often comparable to repainting and can damage the paint if removed, finally I am hesitant about someone removing all the delicate trim on a brand new car! That being said, there are some high impact areas I'm considering getting PPF'd!

Since I was a child, I was taught to polish up the apple to give to the teacher because a rich, glossy apple looked a million times better than a dull one. Then as I have gone to car shows all my life everyone was working for a deep, glossy "wet" look finish. So I guess I am lost here.

To My my eyes it kind of looks like a American muscle car or a crazy exotic sport car lambo type with a bmw appeal rear trunk is bmw style and rear bumper has this mustang/camaro styling but quickly reminds you it’s a classy aggressive bmw sport car, this is my favorite m2 surpass the e46 and e92 in style/looks/appeal it’s a win 🏆

You seemed to have downplayed the manual transmission over the automatic. I just hope that you at least test drove the manual before making such a critical comparison. I’ve been a manual driver for over 45yrs and the manual driving experience to me is so much more engaging with being connected to the car as one. And if you’re truly a manual enthusiast, like I am, it’s hard to give up that relationship even if the gearbox isn’t perfect or as good as lets say a Porsche gear box for instance. Sorry to hear about your experience with the 335i, so unfortunate! I’ve been a proud owner of a 2009 335i coupe with 82,00mi for 15yrs now with a few mechanical repairs…will never sell that 6 speed baby of mine.Although I’m currently looking to buy the 2025 M2 as well. Test drove the automatic because that’s all that was available but will most definitely test drive the manual if and when one in my area becomes available.

Not intending to be ultra critical about the manual, more just saying that for how I want to use the car the ZF8 seemed like the better choice and I have also been keen to try a car with this transmission. I love manual transmissions, my other car is an manual E30 Touring so having a manual in my daily isn't essential. The ZF8 is just excellent for a daily driver and matches the S58 engine so well - that doesn't make me any less of an enthusiast! Glad your 335i experience wasn't like mine and good luck with your M2 purchase!

I haven't driven the G82 M4 so difficult to say, the G87 is meant to be more fun with its shorter wheelbase and I think I prefer the looks over the G82. Just personal preference

M4 if you want the extra rear leg room, Xdrive, and more options/luxurious interior. M2 with it's shorter wheelbase makes it feel a bit more nimble.

Be extremely careful NOT to scratch this "frozen paint", because you cannot polish that scratch off. The only fix is to repaint this entire panel for $$$$$$$ (it is BMW), so this paint is a bottomless money pit. Hopefully you will be able to keep it pristine.

I wish people would just call it a twin scroll turbo. TwinPower Turbo is twin scroll, which this car has. TwinTurbo Power is an actual twin turbo. It's not TwinTurbo charged. It's TwinPower Turbo charged, i.e., twin scroll.

BMW rather confusingly use the marketing term "twinpower turbo" on single turbo and twin turbo cars. The S58 engine is however a twin turbocharged straight six. The B58 is a single turbo straight six, and it is a twin scroll turbo.

Yea I'm just waiting another month for mine to get here as I purchased a 2025 with a couple more HP not a big difference and torque, I should see it here by January so they tell me and Its the car of my life, and the simple things i'm going to do to it as far as optics, but the hidden part in the motor i'm making it a low 800hp which is enough for me but around here everyone has at least 1200 hp and above so i'll be racing them from the back and I'm proud considering what they drive you know what i'm saying, Lambos, Ferraris, McLarens and super cars that will just eat me up, but on the other hand they also have BMWs that beat them all as they have over 1200 hp and above HP so yea i'm falling behind in power but i don't care about those fools as they got the money to do so and I'm just a poor individual that picks the right stuff and my car will still be a powerhouse as i'm a great driver but will not push it to the limit as I'm just thinking of owning the car for a couple of years and selling it for the knew M2 if there is one so yea, i'm going to relax take care of my baby girl M2 and when the 2 year is up i'm hoping to have less than 20 thousand miles on it pampered by the way as i'm older now and the car will last me as in my younger days i would give this car 1 month of life and if tuned 1 day and yes i speak from experience so when i get it i'll hit you up send you pics and show you my mods that will maybe make you modify your car as well, but just one thing i must add as far as the handling part make sure you get coil overs as only springs will get you killed nuff said.
