I remember watching the iPod classic at the mall when I was probably 14, too expensive for me and my parents so I always used cheap alternatives. Then I bought my first ipod shuffle 4th gen 2gb (which I adore) and from that was a total escalation, now I use several ipods and, with the spare parts, perform several mods on them as a hobby. One thing I don't think you mentioned was battery life. With Jobs' push to make tech ever thinner in an effort to make them lighter, sleeker and feel more modern, battery life suffers. A real book, an ipod, a real camera don't result in battery anxiety for the user. The tech of the 90s and 2000s usually had amazing battery life, perhaps with the exception of portable gaming like the gameboy.

I totally agree with a lot of what you have to say. I'm an old gen z/young millenial so I remember the golden age of the iPod pretty well. I only ever had a 4 GB iPod Nano, most kids did. But this one kid in my algebra class showed me his iPod Classic one day, and I was so shocked when he told me that it had like 80GB on it. Ever since then I knew I had to have one someday. Now I'm the proud owner of a couple. I sure do love these things. Even though using my phone to stream music through Apple Music and listen to it through my AirPods is heaps convenient, iPods will always hold a special place in my heart. Love these things to bits.

I opted to get an iPod touch 5th gen a while back for a few reasons - an obvious desire for a headphone jack being one of them. The ability to enjoy music on my way to work(or anywhere for that matter) without any unnecessary notifications or the like, disrupting my music, has been a godsend and as it’s solely used for music, it doesn’t take up much of my space, something a phone would have to deal with. At first, I had used my old Samsung to play music, but in comparison to my iPhone, it was large and cumbersome in my pocket… leading to my iPod purchase. Too bad it was only 64 gigs, had to settle for 10,000 songs.

I am also changing my mind. I recently bought an ipod classic 6th, improved the battery and put a microsd, to put all my mp3 repertoire. With that, I'm slowly getting rid of google music (I don't like spotify). During work, it's impossible to leave the cell phone aside, but at the gym or when I'm waiting in a queue, I feel that the iPod is doing me good, because I can focus on the music without worrying about the online world

I have the same iPod but in black. I installed Rockbox on it and load up FLAC files. The sound quality is great. With Rockbox you can also mount directly to your computer and can drag and drop files so no need for iTunes. I almost sold this a few times but always chicken out. I rip my CD collection to FLAC files and swing by the thrift store and pickup cheap used CDs which I stream with Plex but load up files onto my iPod.

I love that you mention a "sweet spot" that can be subjective to a lot of people, because I feel like that boils down what I'm trying to do. I love that there's so many options, but for once in my life, I'm making a conscious decision opposed to just letting whatever is around or new be what I use. I know what works best for me may not work for everyone. Being proactive about the tech I enjoy, such as making playlists to listen to, or figuring out what I'm going to watch on my TV for the next day or so (I put my non-youtube visual media on a flash drive and play it from my BluRay player instead of sifting through streaming), feels not only more involved and closer to a hobby, but I feel a certain sense of ownership over my free time. I think even just the whole act of being able to zoom out and making this stuff less convenient to use has so much value in making what we do feel more deliberate and meaningful. I feel like rethinking tech and it's place in my life has me realizing this process is much less like losing an old friend, and more like taking a vacation from a toxic home life 😂 I don't think I'm gonna come back to where I was, I think I'm going to inch closer and closer to my vacation spot until work forces me to get closer again 😅 (okay that analogy got away from me lol)

i remember getting an ipod nano for xmas and having to learn to pirate songs. its like a little time capsule, the stuff i was listening to directly pulls me back several years in my memories. its harder to delete stuff on an ipod, whereas on spotify the second i stop enjoying a song, its gone with a tap, and that removes the opportunity to come back to it years later.

I'm so with you on the iPod as a daily driver. I have three iPods that I gravitate towards, that I bought online (totally not influenced by Dank Pods). My favorite and main iPod is a 7th gen iPod touch because it can run Spotify so having that music library on me is nice while still having the benefits of an offline device that I have my CD collection stuffed onto. My second favorite is a 6th/7th gen iPod Classic I bought off from Elite Obsolete who sells iPod parts, accessories, as well as ready to use iPods if you don't wanna take the risk of fixing one yourself. I have replaced the face plate and the middle button so it has a nice rainbow coloring to it and it really makes it pop and unique. (I even ordered a green middle button so it lines up with the green in the middle of the face plate). My third favorite iPod is a 3rd Gen Classic because it has a nice inline remote that you can use to change song, volume, as well as play/pause. Downside of the 3rd gen is that it can only charge via firewire, but it can sync with USB. Also the red lights on the buttons are pretty neat. I'm also in Gen Z, but my family had a lot of the tech similarities you shared about Gen X'ers. We had a shared family XP machine, we had a landline, and I did not get a cell phone until I turned 16 in 2015. I remember lots of my grade school friends having phones way before I did and I am kinda grateful that I didn't get a cell phone that early. I am also a CS major and I have also been going down the "dumbing down" my tech path. I don't have an issue with AI in and of itself but I hate how it's being utilized. It is being used to replace people's jobs, which would be a good thing as this would mean that more people would be free to pursue passions and not a job, but this can only be feasible with universal income guarantee which we do not have in the USA. Also the fact that AI is being used to further addict us to these social media apps just puts a sour taste in my mouth when it comes to AI. When it comes to manually putting tracks on a device, you really and up putting on the tracks you TRULY care about because the barrier to putting them on is higher than pressing the "Add To Liked Songs" button. You end up with a device full of music you took the effort to put on there, or music that you spent actual money on to obtain like from CDs or digital copies. Also wanna acknowledge the Babymetal in your playlist, mad respect!

I've been using one in the car since about 2006. Had to buy a 7th gen classic in 2014 to be compatible with my new Jeep (the photo/4th gen I originally got wouldn't talk to the newer audio system interface; it now gets plugged into various stereos around the house and I recently installed a flash memory upgrade bumping it from its original 60 GB to 128, and might take it to 256). Both have more variety than the local radio stations are ever inclined to play, and it's variety that *I* like, not what Clear Channel chooses to program. Will probably do a memory upgrade to the 160 GB one in the Jeep at some point, too. Schlep it with me when I go on trips as well, and thus far it's _mostly_ been compatible with the rental cars, though in recent years it's a bit more iffy. Sometimes a single purpose device is just *better,* even if ripping CDs into the computer is something of a PITA, but I'm old and want physical copies of my music/movies. Congrats on getting your 5.5 gen, and it's good to see you're enjoying it.

I got into iPods in 2020 after bingewatching DankPods. I had an iPhone 8 at the time which sucked at listening to music, especially with wired headphones, so I got a 7th Gen Classic for that purpose. And man I've been loving this thing ever since, it's getting used on an almost daily basis by now and I rarely leave the house without it. And these things are highly moddable it's amazing. Got a blue front and black rear case, better 3000mAh battery that last's me a week and most important, I got rid of the hard drive and replaced it with a iFlash adaptor that's currently holding 2x200GB microSD cards. Had to replace the display at one point so this iPod alone cost me over 220€ in total by now. But it was worth every cent imo. And even though I have a phone with a really good DAC and headphone jack now, I just don't wanna go back. One reason is also iTunes with it's smart playlists.

It was a 1st Gen Shu-ffle but the shipment costs for a new battery (the old one is dead) is so high here that I'll probably buy a 5th Gen Classic since I saw it for about 2500 Serbian dinars (the Shu-ffle battery is about 20 euros, including shipping) and he made me love the Aussie accent, I just got it cuz a dingus would be too expensive for me, so yeah mate, enjoy your 7th Gen! I've never streamed music. As a late Gen Xer in the 90s, I started off with cassettes and then went to CDs shortly after. In the mid 2000s, I got an old free PC from my mom's work and installed a CD burner and extra hard drive in it. From then on, I started to rip all of my CDs to MP3. For the past few years, I've been mostly downloading most of the newer music I purchase. Everything is dumped in a 256gb flash drive and I stick it in the dash and hit shuffle. Here's the advantages I found. If I lose cell service, the music doesn't stop. And nobody can ban the content that's on there. And no subscription fee.

The one downside about Spotify is you don’t really own the music. It doesn’t feel the same as buying an artist’s album, try to take the booklet out, or trying to be very careful to not break the hinge/crack the case. An album was something you can hold. Granted the 10 dollars you pay to listen to all the music you want is neat. But it gets overwhelming and since There’s nothing physical to hold makes music less enjoyable. Even burning cd’s for a trip feels rewarding. The iPod while a device still feels like you can experience the music.

the thing about millennials not relying on tech but still having it makes me feel so nostalgic for a time I didn’t even get to live in. when people take their phones out to scroll even in the elevators it makes me sort of worried about how we’re all kind of missing out on life lol. I forget to just look around and take a moment to breathe myself when I’m so glued to the screen. back then when people got off work they just didn’t have to do it anymore, but since a lot of work is on the phones we’re always on the clock I guess. just something I feel sad about

One step I've taken towards this lifestyle, is having a rule of no games on my phone, I'll emulate the game on my pc if I find it worth it (e.g Clash of Clans) I'm so glad that I'm not the only one pushing myself towards this lifestyle, I was raised only having my 3DS, and later my PS Vita (I still have and love both of them) as portable devices. I may only use my phone for Discord, KZbin, and the occasional search on Firefox. It doesn't sound *that* bad when I word it like that way, but when I feel like I spend enough time on my phone that it gets in the way of much more important things than whatever I'm doing on it, it's high time to cut it out imo. As a fellow Zoomer, I congratulate you on making the push to return to (tech) Eden and embrace (relatively) low-tech devices. I'm planning to get myself a iPod 5.5 Video soon too, and I found a way to get music from TIDAL on to it, for what it's worth lol. But I'm also dealing with the dilemma of how do I handle anything regarding a mobile phone, my current phone is low-key one foot out the door already despite me treating it like my first born lol. I'm looking at a sony phone (nostalgia effect) but if I get an iPod, no downloading music on my phone, that way I can completely put my phone away while working on school and still have my music. I don't think my parents would let me have a flip phone at this point, talk about a first world problem lol. Anyways, thank you for making this video, almost a year ago, it's really nice to see that at least someone else in my generation is willing to take a step back and go against the mobile addiction trend that so many of our kin have fallen victim to.

There are pros and cons to both sides. Spotify is convenient, but I don't own any of thr music. I really miss that. I just ordered an ipod classic from etsy with Bluetooth and a C type charging port. Can't wait to start building my music library from scratch again! Gunna doen grade my phone soon too, and learn to read a good map. I'm 31, I thing my Gen is where hand held tech really started to grow, and so some things like learning how to navigate was obsolete. I'm going to have to teach myself, I guess.

I completely agree with this video. I'd love to get a Ipod but... I already have a lg v60. which to me is basically a modern version of it, + android 13. I dont really care about modding since, the device already does everything I need it to do including high res, high quality playback, + it can drive hifi overears which is stinkin amazing. just need to get myself a pair of k712 pros from (RIP)AKG.

If you don't mind opening up and tinkering with your iPod, you can mod it to take SD cards up to 1tb!

Damn, YT recommending these new “Using iPods in 202X” (Replace the X with the last digit from recent year like 4, therefore being 2024), users and ya know what, as a fellow daily iPod user, I’m happy for ya 👍 Before discovering dankpods like idk, which was like 3 years ago maybe, I always used a Nano 5h gen. It was my favorite and my daily driver. But ever since discovering him he inspired me to get the device I always wanted when I was a wee lad which is an iPod Classic, however I got the 4th gen to start with but then upgraded to the actual Classic I always wanted which is the 5th gen Classic a year after. Gave it a Clear faceplate and a rainbow backplate, installed an iFlash to use SD and used it daily. Last year I made a Nano upgrade, got myself a 7th gen Nano; Small and slim, but best of all has bluetooth. Got a 30 pin bluetooth adapter for my stereo which has an iPod dock, put that adapter in and can connect my Nano 7th gen and listen to my tunes out loud. I take either the 5th gen Classic or the 7th gen Nano out with me.

I have an iPod mini 1st gen that I flash modded to 128GB and an iPod Classic 6th gen that's about to get repaired and probably another 128gb flash card. I'm a millennial and I have to say, by 2002 or so the NAS revolution had begun. Like yeah, there were normies out there who had all of their media on CDs and DVDs by then, but by the time I was like 16 I had already put together like 500gb or so or music and bought drives to store it on. Granted this was in 128-256k mp3s, not flac like we have now. Recently when I found these iPods I put back together my old Power Mac G5 and threw a couple of old 500gb drives in it to store AAC 256k versions of my main library and sync it with these older devices and the whole process reminded me of those days. I actually had a G4 at that time, a G5 like this was kinda a pipe dream when I was 16 or so, it's funny how usable those old computers are even and I do recommend having one laying around for working on the ipods. Also old versions of photoshop, logic pro, protools, garage band etc are much less distraction filled and lots of old plugins can be found for free these days. 10/10 don't throw away apple products ever lmfao

If you want a better iTunes computer, get a 2007 iMac since it works for each and every one of the iPods

im an elder millennial, and ive been really eyeing the dumb phone route (my first cell phone was the razr as well, and i loved it) but of all things its really the gps thats holding me back. the more i think about it, the more i want to strip EVERYTHING off my phone, and treat those at home devices like laptops or tablets as what most people use their phones for. but again, those are home devices, so it encourages me to be more mindful when im out. IDK, i picked up a pretty budget digital camera that was WAY better than my phone, and with SD cards being so cheap the storage is huge. It lets me take pictures and cherish them when i later send thrm to friends or get them printed out, instead of posting a hundred and then forgetting them all

I never stream music cause I have always loved playing what I want to listen to when I want without the worry of the services not having it for whatever reason that’s why I still use my iPod touch cause I can also watch music videos I have gotten from iTunes over the years on it as well on it even though I still have my classic iPod that isn’t holding a charge well probably due to needing a new battery

My current iPod 5.5 was modded from 80gb to 256gb.... so overkill I've only filled up about 35gb. I very much appreciate how much of my phones battery life this has saved though. Currently my mission to fill this thing with as many audiobooks and movies with great soundtracks as I can.
