Happy New Year! If you’ve been following my journey for the past several years, you know I’m not an alarmist and I don’t create click bait content for views. FYI, My focus in 2024 on preparedness (on this channel as well as Rumble, Patreon and podcasts) is purely practical, for the sake of my family and for our offline and online community. My intention is to provide some facts to make people aware of the increased risk of crisis on multiple fronts and to provide solutions if I can. Whether you share my concerns or not, self reliance and preparation is never a bad thing - it makes individuals, families, communities and nations stronger and more resilient. There are countless sources of truthful information available for those who take the time to look, but as a start, I recommend familiarizing yourself with The World Economic Forum, The Great Reset and Agenda 2030. They provide insight into what’s predicted and prescribed for society in the near and long term future and with that information, you can prepare for the world as it’s likely to be, not as you wish it to be or as you’ve experienced it in the past. Further reading should include; Peter Zeihan The End of the World is Just the Beginning Neil Howe The Fourth Turning Is Here: What the Seasons of History Tell Us about How and When This Crisis Will End

Those are some good book recommendations, it seems like every day the information is becoming public and there seems to be little response to it. Hopefully more people will start paying more attention and actually consider how these world events affect their lives.

Herzlichen Dank! Arbeit. Amen.

You obviously didn’t live in America in the mid to late 70s and into early 80s. Interest rates reached their highest point in modern history in October 1981 when they peaked at 18.63%, according to the Freddie Mac data. Fixed mortgage rates declined from there, but they finished the decade at around 10%. The 1980s were an expensive time to borrow money. Interest rates had to climb higher to compensate for the ravages of inflation. In the late 70's and early 80's, the Federal Reserve attempted to choke off inflation by repeatedly raising the Fed funds rate until it hit 21 percent. In 1970, a gallon of gas cost 36 cents. By 1981, it had more than tripled to $1.19. For context as to just how bad things are now, $1.19 in 1981 was worth $4.05 in today's money - gas was actually cheaper back then at the height of the crisis.

I am also from Central Eastern Europe, more exactly from Romania. Besides building a house and hunting, I have learned self reliance, from cultivating and conserving food, to making clothes, furniture, sculpting, cooking healthy whole based food, also to take care of my own health and others (if they need) naturally by using herbs, massage, and many other techniques. I stopped needing conventional medicine, drugs or doctors for more than 20 years, something which has saved and dramatically improved life and my family's. I shared my skills for many, many years, for free, but people unfortunately do not like to be able manage themselves, so just a few were interested, and even they gave up... I love self reliance and the only reason that holds me stuck in the city is my husband whom I love him so, so much, otherwise I would go and live in a small cottage with own garden near a wood and a spring or a river immediately if possible 🥰 Shawn, what you have done until now is very hard and astonishing. Damn, if I were 20 yrs or even 10 yrs younger I’d relocate & go as self reliant as physically/financially possible. As a widowed female retired nurse in my early 70’s, there is no chance of me doing it on my own now. But I do have an acre of land & heat by wood, my town is rural by modern standards, its farmland by the sea. I have well water & home is also passive solar. There is much wildlife in the area too. I know in my gut that the world is going to change and go downhill fast. But as I believe in God I feel he will guide my every step forward.

We essentially taught cows to eat grass, as it allowed for larger herds and less labour. Silvo-pasturing. Highland cattle may do well in your area.

Good for you. You're going back to the way of life that our ancestors embraced. And doing it without turning your back on modern conveniences of your choice. Media and many in society try to turn preparedness into a dirty thing and treat those that see value in it as nut jobs. My grandma talks about her memories of the great depression and about how hard life was. But the interesting thing is her stories of her family visiting extended family that owned a farm and how much they relied on them for assistance. You will be able to bless the lives of people around you because of your forward thinking. And it doesn't have to be a total collapse to benefit from being prepared for hard times. When my wife and I both lost our jobs in the late 90's, our food storage played a huge part in getting our family through that struggle. And has since help many around us in their times of need. Keep up the good work.

The trees are way different than where I live in the Western U.S. so you must live east of the Rockies. Where I live only low brush, wild apples and cherry plums lose their leaves. We have big conifers, like in eastern BC. I'm too old for homesteading, but I was raised in a vertical log home with logs sawed lengthwise (a trade) with only tarpaper between them. We lived on an island, across Haro Strait from Vancouver Island, before Puget Sound was really discovered, but we ate oysters, clams, both horse clams and steamers, ling cod, salmon, rock cod, salt/fresh water mallards, quail, pheasant, deer ( a lot), garden produce, Himalaya blackberries, small Pacific blackberries all growing wild, salmon and thimble berries and very small wild strawberries. We found old homestead orchards and my mom canned a lot and my dad smoked lots of fish. It was my job at the age of 10, to shoot rabbits where rabbits were so prevalent that people would net hundreds of them to sell. As a teacher for a while I always tried to go to places where no one else wanted to go. I find very few people who do the homestead life. Even though I am 5 driving hours from an interstate, I don't find people who like that life. I'm not a prepper but would be a survivalist because I have lived close to the homestead way of life everywhere I've lived. Even my grandparents who lived in the mountains of California lived in a log home with a dirt floor. I enjoyed reading about Dick Proeneke who at the age of 55, homestead at Twin Lakes, Alaska, and built his cabin and most things he used including cooking and eating utensils. I'll have to watch some of your videos. I am on the grid, but my water comes off my metal roof, I harvest all my own firewood (Getting hard now that I'm 78) Since people in the U.S. have guns, I practice a bit on my homemade gun range. An interesting bumper sticker I saw in our county seat last month said, "I own firearms and a backhoe." And talking to an assessor a few months she and I agreed that if we drive on back roads and come across a closed gate, we don't open it. So in a collapse I think Canada would be safer than here. But I think most violence will at least begin in the Bible Belt of the American South, since most civil war, revolutionary war, guns and hate sites seem to come from there. I live 200 air miles from the Canadian border.

I was just wandering around in the forest when suddenly I realized in my 6-year-old brain that i did not have any idea of where I was or how to get back to our campsite. I think I started to cry and then a woman approached and asked what the matter was. I told her that I was lost and did not know where my family was. She told me that she would take care of me and led me to her camp in the woods. I became one of her family and was raised by her until the police came and took me away. Happy memories indeed.

They believe we are in for hard times in the near future also. I am in the U.S., and was hoping for things to change and get better here, govt and economy-wise, but who knows. I am/have been trying to prepare for myself as best I can for the past 3+ years, since 2020, when the bottom of our world fell out, and hasn't gotten much better since. I can't see the future, but I don't believe in living with my head in the sand either! I would rather have and not need, than to need and not have! I read something someone else said recently, and it is right on point with me. "If I am wrong, I will eat my mistakes, if you are wrong, what will you eat?"!!!

I know that you have a freeze drier, EGGS!!! FD them. That way you'll always have them. I'm putting another batch in today. When we had 30 hens, they were laying a lot of eggs, so I started scrambling them and putting 6 per zip lock baggie and freezing. Then as soon as we got our FD (it was on back order) I began getting them done. I know we will have eggs for years! Trying to keep feed for hens in the future will be very hard if not impossible. Thing's collapse you won't be able to get much of anything. Doing the same with things that we can't grow. Everyone needs to get ready, if not already, for what's coming. We have 10 1/2 acres, mostly hardwoods. Thank you so much for lighting a fire under a lot of people to do things to "save" themselves but also family and friends. Happy New Year. God bless and protect.

Good stuff, Shawn. I understand what you mean about lots of projects... we have a 5 acre homestead here in rural Alaska, and the work is non-stop. Also looking at a second property and all that entails... There are many facets to homesteading and preparing for an uncertain future. Please keep these useful how-to videos coming. They are like bite size lessons that help the rest of us "eat the elephant" of self sufficiency. Peace to you & family from Alaska!

Hope 2024 is a good year for you and your family. Despite what's happening in your life we really need to think about the world at large. About 900000 displaced children in Gaza sleeping on wet ground with very little protection from the elements, untold numbers of children starving in countries like Yemen or Sudan etc. Those things are sadder than sad and world leaders doing very little to help alleviate their suffering. It's good to watch your life in Canada. Apologies if this sounds as if I'm using your channel as my soap box. Not so Shaun I really admire what you're doing and showing people how to live without excessive impact on our world.Thank you

Thanks for the update, Shawn. I look forward to following your projects in 2024. I fully agree with everything you said. We are in for some hard times. I also agree with the use of hand tools verses power tools. I'm always amazed at how fast you can build with hand tools but with your aggressive plans set for 2024, using power tools is the way to go. Happy New Year to you and your family.

I too believe we are going towards some very hard times and am trying to prepare as best i can and be as off grid as possible. The amount of skills you have developed and the fact that you're sharing them truly is invaluable. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos you're helping me, as well as many others for sure, gain the knowledge and skills to prepare for what is to come. Even just showing your homestead and the systems you have set up is such an inspiration and really gives me ideas for improvements i can make on my own homestead. God bless you and your family

I totally agree this year will be interesting! The most important thing we can do is be prepared and make sure we have everything to keep our families safe and sustainable! Time to get to work!!

I enjoy the video's and all information you provide &your family. We need more people like you all. Very thankful for this. I been watching for few years now,my parents didn’t have this kind of knowledge and my father passed away when i was very young. I'm now pretty much on my own, family has grown up and moved on in life. Now it's left solely up to myself. Now being disabled doesn't seem possible to me. I grew up fast with family of my own at young age, making alot of wrong decisions and now signal,& children are all gone too. But I'm still trying, the best i can do. It's helps thou to be in a good community, not every place is good. Thanks again for sharing& happy new year to you all.

Enjoying the banjo and new intro! Also 100% agree on your sentiments about the path of the North American continent and the world itself. Better to have and not need then need and not have has been my motto for a while. If you can afford one of something buy two and save one for rainy days parts for machinery etc. mostly.

Two homesteads? Dear lord Shawn are you a robot? I’ve told my wife how incredible you are making the 2nd log cabin hand digging your basement & building the log cabin by hand the original way with the old type tools only to now hear you were building a second homestead? Wow, just freaking wow. Color me impressed, no shocked. I’m really enjoying your building skills but also your sage advice. I just wish more people would take it to heart. There really are forces in the background working to subvert our entire culture & western nations & destroy it all. They think by doing so that they can usher in their totalitarian regimes & live like kings & queens. But like the Japanese that bombed Pearl Harbor they’re ignorant & fail to see they’ll be waking that ‘sleeping giant’!

I’ve loved following your progress over the years, @shawnjames1, and admire your purpose and planning. Your message of preparedness is not lost on the wise. Having been without energy for 10 days because of tornados/derechos in the last years reminds us that we must think of how we can be more self reliant within the city/suburbs as well. Would love to hear your ideas on how us city dwellers can prep within our communities. Thanks and blessings to your family and all the channel followers here.

We also experienced 15 days in the middle of a freezing winter with no electricity. Everything works off of electricity. You can't charge your devices. You can't put gas into your car from the gas station pumps. You can't often heat your home. You can't have warm or hot water for bathing. Even many gas stoves have electric ignition. Sometimes municipal water and sewer systems don't work either. This year we bought 6, 5 gallon gas cans and a gas generator. The ideal would be 12 gas cans but we don't have the storage space. We don't get enough sun for solar. If we don't use the gas by the end of the month, then we put it in our car, and refill the gas can and put in back in storage. Each tank is labelled so we use them in order of age. Don't forget to put stabilizer in the can before adding the gas. Hope this suggestion is practical for you.

Hi Shawn: Happy New Year to you and your family and Cali(I know she's family too😀) . Enjoy your videos, more so now that you are talking on them. I have been prepping on a small scale since my retirement and my family laughs at me(I hope I never have to tell them I told you so!) I am an avid hunter as well. We need to teach our children and grandchildren( in my case) these skills and also financial skills which I feel are extremely important and should be taught in the schools early on. Glad to hear that KZbin has done well for you, continued success in all your endeavours and all the very best in health and happiness.

Thank you for all you do and share! You are an inspiration with all your knowledge and balanced, factual opinions and outlook. When things have presented challenges, in my own life, I revert to how my grandmother lived. Outhouse, woodstove ( no insulation in the walls) and only cold running water in the house. "If my grandmother could do it, so can I! She passed away a week before turning 90 in 1983. I wish I had spent more time with her and learned more about "the ways"! I'm grateful for what I learned. Thank you, again, Shawn, and looking forward to your videos! ❤

I love your channels. I agree 2024 will be challenging. I'm 75 and live in California so I won't be able to prep like you (darn), but there are things people in my position can do. #1 get out of debt. # prep your pantry. Our money is getting more worthless and buys less so buy in bulk if you're able.

I would like to say thank you for making me look at things a little differently. Your insight into our ever changing environment and economic climate is making me think. I live in the U.K. and we just simply don’t have the same possibilities for land and living an off grid lifestyle which I am a whole world away from. However, every little counts and I love what you have achieved and appreciate your views and wisdom.

Long term viewer here. I'm very interested to hear more about your underlying philosophy and why you subscribe to cultural pessimism. I'm very much in agreement myself and I agree with the philosophy of history of cyclical organic rise and fall. The signs are here in Ireland too.

"Nothing new under the sun" as Ecclesiastes states, and history maybe doesnt repeat, since it cant repeat. History is history and has already happened. However, there are two kind of people. The ones that learns from his misstakes and the ones that just recognize them. Lets be the ones that learns. Bless you and have a wonderful 2024!
