It’s just a carryover from the racist teachings that our hair was unattractive to them. For years, people with kinky curly hair had to cover it as not to offend the slave owners. A good number of people missed out on jobs when worn in its natural state.

@@lindalove7193 Facts. To me it's about jobs. I don't care about other things and I honestly hate straight hair. I dont even find wite hair attractive. It looks like horse hair. Seriously. It's amazing how money and aggressive/forced marketing can convince people that it is the most beautiful hair out there. Lol! It's nasty, slimy, plain, boring, unhealthy and unattractive. It's not a popular opinion but that is how I feel. It's just not beautiful. That's why they have to force feed it and abuse those who don't wear their hair in such a way. You have to force feed a lie and not the truth. Right.

Joyel, your sister did an excellent job on your hair. You can never please people; people will always have something judgmental to say about others no matter what they do. People are miserable inside…and all miserable people do is look for drama or something to gossip about to stay relevant. Those people who wrote those awful comments about you are jealous and haters, PERIOD. Joyel, you are beautiful and your hair is amazing ❤️. If you don’t have haters, that means something is wrong. Always shine bright as a diamond, and keep blooming gorgeous lady. ❤️

That's exactly what it is--resentment, envy and jealousy, sadly, likely coming from other women. Those waves were really pretty and well put together. Anyone who can look at a healthy, lovely hairstyle like that and "mock" anything is obviously a spiteful little troll.

The people mocking you are JEALOUS HATERS💯Your hair is absolutely beautiful. I live in Rome and your natural 4 type hair is the most desired hair in Europe. It's considered sexy and chic. Africans, Afro descendants and even Italian girls with type 4 hair, rock their natural hair NEVER thinking of straightening it. You hit the hair lotto in every place on earth that I've ever been. America is kind of behind with this straight hair obsession. Your hair is bomb.

My hair is very similar to yours and I’ve been natural the same amount of time. Let me just tell you, do not go to a hair salon, with our density of hair. Stylists tend to not have the same amount of patience for the thickness of our hair and will rip through it to just get it done. My hair has thinned out from it. They also tend to think they can be rougher because we have a lot of hair and the damage won’t be as noticeable, which is true. It’s taken me a while to notice a difference.

Very true! BUT, you just have to find someone who actually cares about natural hair. Which is easier said than done. I’ve been natural since 2009 and I straighten my hair twice a year(a good trim)by a professional but, she’s gentle and actually loves on my hair(similar texture and density to yours and joyels). It’s a nice treat being treated well a couple times a year. *Im not advocating for straight hair but, I hope that you can find someone who has the patience and ability to deal with our type of hair.

I work in an office setting, and I intentionally do not straighten my hair in order to normalize natural hair as a professional, including protective styles. Also my hair is really long and straightening it and maintaining straightened hair is way more work than wearing twists or twist outs for me. Lastly, I just love my natural hair, I have no desire to straighten it, and I'm afraid of heat damage too

People on the internet only have "that full chest" energy on the internet. They would never in person. They speak out of the side of their necks but I dont like that you and your sister had to experience that. The reputation with salons can be scary but there are natural hair salon that are reputable and really do specialize and care about natural hair. You are gonna get that extra charge tho because your hair is no joke when it comes the thickness plus the length😬👏 Also, dont let other peoples insecurities and prejudice effect what you chose to do with your hair. If ever you decide to silk press or straighten and you can "pass" then you just can, doesnt mean that you are trying to or want to or that you have to prove what/who you are. Your genetic makeup is what it is PERIOD! You know I get protective over you lol you gone have me in these innanet streetz doing a Cardi B 🤣 Anyway, you are beautiful and gorgeous and can do whatever you want and not have to explain anything to anyone, you owe randoms nothing! Love and more love 💚💚💚💚💚

Social media can be so toxic. I’m so sorry you and your sister got those comments on Facebook. She did a great job. Was it board straight? No but who says it has to be. There are still those who believe bone straight hair is the only way to live - and, frankly, that mentality is so small. Plus, the heat levels required to achieve that degree of straightness can be sooooo damaging. Your hair looks great straight or in a braid out. You do you and bump those haters on Facebook.

I can relate. My last relaxer was 2008 and my hair is massively thick has NEVER been straightened since. I have had so many women friends ask me to straighten it. Even offer to do it because THEY want to see how long it is. I tell them a) I don’t like the look of straight hair on me and b) I don’t care about exactly how long my hair is or other people seeing how long my hair is. I noticed particularly those of my friends who are black seem surprised I don’t like my hair straight. Actually I did a lot of sets on my hair when I was relaxed and I purposely kept it shorter or layered because at a certain length it starts to look “bulky” when straight for the lack of a better word because of the thickness.

The same people that hate are the same that go and try to mimic it for themselves. I’ve experienced that over and over again in life. You were someone who truly helped me to enjoy and embrace my “shrinkage” earlier on in my journey. I love my hair curling up around me ears now lol. You said once “don’t wait for the world to love your hair before you love it yourself.” And would you know it-people trying to do the same thing as I do with my hair, even non blacks loving and asking what products I use in my hair. I LOVE my hair.

Also, everyone is trying to “plop” and “scrunch” and “flip upside down” their hair into curls now, which is exactly the shrinkage capacity that black women have naturally but try to fight against. It’s time for us to wake up and see that our hair is gorgeous, sexy, sophisticated, and beautiful without needing societal approval first 😻

I've been growing my hair for about 3 years now and I have yet to straighten it. I was goin to get a silk press this year to celebrate 3 years and I was really excited to see it but I ended up getting cold feet, I don't really know why. I do want to grow my hair as long as possible and experience the spiritual growth that comes along with the patience of naturally growing my hair. I'm also scared that I'll like my hair too much when it's straight and I don't want to form any habits that might impede the growth of my natural hair. I loved hearing your reasons for not wanting to straighten your hair. I've followed your journey from the beginning and despite our differences in race and skin tone, I haven't found another KZbin who's hair and hair growth journey are so similar to mine. I'm so grateful that I found someone that just enjoys wearing their fro and being very simple with their haircare and shows that you don't need to do much for your hair to grow. It will retain length in a more natural state despite what anyone says. I love how you've narrowed down the brands you choose to support. You're truly a positive influence and a light in this community and I'm grateful that you've stuck around even through the hate you may receive. You're influence to me and in this community is worth it to me and I thank you.

Joy-el you are beautiful from inside and out! I can relate to you on many levels. I’m American of African descent and both my daughters struggle with their hair and their complexions and comments about their own hair. One is a lighter complexion than the other and their textures are different. One daughter could pass as white, hispanic or whatever but she identifies as black. It has been a struggle for her with her identity and as her mother raising her I got asked if she was my daughter. I even was asked where am I taking that child when I picked my own child up from day care. I’ve been told how to style my own child’s hair. Being told what she needs in her hair and what she doesn’t need. I’ll never understand that concern. Anyway thank you for speaking on these topics. I will share your channel with my daughters.

I want to say I love your videos and it's horrible how people treated you and your sister on Facebook, don't pay attention to them. I love how you and your sister work on natural hair. Congrats on the natural hair journey and your hair looks amazing in thickness and length! I have more of 3a/3b hair (not sure if this is correct, just basing off of hair chart), it is a mix of wave/curls, it is pretty long currently (down to my upper arm length), but I am very scared to go to salons to get a trim because of 1) overcharging and 2) cutting my curl ends too short. I've been personally doing my best to care and maintain my curls, I love how long and healthy it is, I learned a lot about taking care of myself during the pandemic and learning to embrace my hair. I didn't have my hair straighten in a long time, I find it more work to maintain straight hair because if it gets wet it's curly again. It happened when I just got it straighten only for the same day to be rainy and windy. I love seeing the natural hair being healthy and curly. Also, I am planning on entering into a career/job, graduating from college soon and I want to go to work with my hair in its natural state, to normalize work culture with curls.

😃OMG, thanks for making this video!! Everything you’re saying is so correct, about making a salon appointment and how wild that whole experience has become, especially the rules of not being late but they can make you wait to be seen for hours. Sometimes they can ruin a natural’s hair, with years down the drain. After three years as a natural, my hair is long, and I have put in too much time, money, the energy, the care, to possibly waste it all by straightening it. I also don’t like how I look with straight hair now; I adore only the look of my natural hair now. It’s been a journey of self-love and acceptance. I love your hair and your videos. You and your sister are very cool. Hope she returns when she’s comfortable. Just good to know that I’m not the only one who doesn’t feel the need to silk press.

I'm sorry you and your sisters suffered such brutal comments on Facebook. I think showing your Blackness through your natural hair makes you look more unique so you be you! The only reason I want to straighten my hair is for a length check and to be able to see how to trim it myself. The only other reason I might consider becoming a straight natural is because the ends of my hair just like to curl together in little knots more frequently than I would like. Just keeping it straight or maybe rolling the ends on silk curlers might help next. I like the fullness of my hair when it's warm natural.

Your hair is gorgeous in it's natural state😍 I too have had my hair in a straight state from 1996 or 1997 up until 2019 when I did my 1st bc. Then, I got it pressed in November 2020 to get it precisely trimmed and let me just say never again. I didn't like it being straight because I had fallen in love with my curls and I got heat damage. I got my 2nd big chop in July 2021 and my hair is growing back greatly. So you're not alone with not wanting or feeling the need to straighten your hair. You are doing the right thing do not silk press your hair. Do not go to a hairdresser you are doing a great job with the care of your hair. They will take your money and charge an arm and a leg and cut more that you want anything in it that will damage your scalp even more. Great job in the care.

Kudos to you for maintaining your healthy hair! It's absolutely beautiful! I love that natural hair is so versatile and once we learn how to care for it properly, we have so many options. Thank you for sharing your reasons for keeping your hair natural! After your vlog on the oil rinse, I was just thinking that it would be nice to see your sister trim your ends and we get to see the process! She did an incredible job with your hair the last time. When she trims your hair again, please take pics so we can see the step by step process. It is unfortunate that people feel as though they can say anything they want and think it's okay. Words can and do hurt so I hope your sister in time will heal from it! I look forward to seeing your quality content!

Hey Joy-el. Thank you for your video. I feel so sad about the comments that you and your sister got on your video. I loved that video. I don't blame you if you don't want to flat iron your hair anymore. I have tight kinks and coils (I don't like to use the hair typing system because I feel like it further divides us) and I straightened my hair back in November. It was my first time I ever flat ironed my own hair and the last time before that it was back in high school by a hairstylist (I'm currently 27 so at least 10 years ago). As soon as I finished flat ironing my hair back in November, I liked it for a moment, but once I woke up the next day, I was already sick of it. My mom loved it so much and I just preferred my hair in its kinky natural state. Just to take a shower was a hassle because I had to wrap up my hair a bunch of times and put a plastic bag just so that it wouldn't get wet and I had to worry about the rain. Also, because my hair was so straight, my satin scarf kept sliding off when I was sleeping. I was so worried about heat damage and I constantly was smelling this burnt smell which was my hair. I only left my hair straight for a week and my mom was a little bit sad about that. She kept telling my aunt how beautiful it was but I didn't think it was that great (fyi: my mom loves my natural hair, she was just excited to see it straight for once. I'm thankful that I am around people who either don't care about my hair or who say positive things). As soon as I washed my hair, I felt so free. I didn't have to run away from the water or worry about all the other issues with having straight hair. Thankfully I only got a tiny tiny bit of heat damage but it's at the nape of my neck and it curls so it's not an issue. Like I said, the last time I flat ironed my hair was back in November, and I don't even feel the urge to do it this year since I'm on a growth journey. I do daily wash and goes like how you used to do them when you had a twa. I love them!! My hair is constantly moisturized and it is thriving. I cowash every day and then I do the LCO method. I actually did this regimen back in 2015-16 but I stopped because I was embarrassed of how other people would think of my hair and I was afraid that as my hair grew longer, I would get tangles (I haven't had issues with tangles). Back then, I did the big chop so I had no choice but to do this method and my hair grew so fast! I actually retained 5-6 inches from July 2015 - July 2016 so I should've stuck with it but now I'm so happy I'm doing it again. Thanks to you, I use Swirly Curly headbands and hair ties so that helps because I didn't have them 6-7 years ago. Lol my comment is so long, but I hope you read it :)

I appreciate your total honesty! I am black with naturally curly, wavy long thick hair too and I’ve been natural for about 10 yrs and you’re right natural black hair is liberating…In a lot of ways and especially learning to do it yourself! When I do go to the salon the most of hairdressers tell me to keep doing what I am doing at home so I don’t go often because of what you said about the cost, wait time etc. Again it’s so liberating going natural I just want to say I like your honesty and just being real!

Is it in one of your videos that you said «my hair is a priviledge» ? That sentence really struck me, it says everything there is to say about natural hair haha. Your hair is beautifuuulll and it makes so much sense that you wouldn't be interested in altering it for whatever reasons ❤

I’m really sorry about what happened to you and your sister. Social media has its perks but it can also be very toxic. Thank you for being you and staying true to what YOU want to do with your hair. It’s unfortunate that our culture, in spite of the strength and consistency of the natural hair movement, still has such an odd addiction to relaxed or flat-ironed hair once hair has grown long. I flat-ironed my hair in late 2019, when it was long because life got hard, time got limited, and I couldn’t take care of it weekly. Ultimately, I had a good stylist. She was careful and I didn’t have any heat damage per se, but there was a lot of thinning, fairy knots and split ends. Part of that may have been my poor health though. I big chopped March 2020 and haven’t flat-ironed it since. My hair is growing and not the length it was and I’m 💯 okay with that. I’m not sure if I will flat iron it again but if life deals me lemons when I’m looking for oranges, I guess it’s good the option is there. But it would be my choice and not anyone else’s so I commend you for doing YOU. ♥️ I kept it long in spite of the rigorous time consuming curly routine because others in my family didn’t want me to cut it. Now I’m okay with saying no. It’s my hair and I will do what’s best for me. Stay true to yourself. Peace, love and blessings! ♥️🙏🏽♥️

I am by no means suggesting what you should do with your hair. I will say though that I never see just how bad and uneven my ends are until I straighten them (usually just once to twice a year). I do it myself since I’m more cautious about high heat and damage than most stylists are and my hair is so thankful for the cut. Using a steam pod instead of a flat iron is a great option because it’s much less damage to your hair.

Yeah Joyel. I pressed my hair 2 weeks ago, because I wanted to feel a brush on my scalp. It was itching so bad. I quickly regretted doing that. Keeping my coils straight take so much work. People often complement me on my natural, so Im leaving the heat alone. It just wasn't worth the risk of damaging it.

Everyone needs to take the internet with a grain of salt. Im sorry that happened to your sister. I agree with you. Im more interested in plaits twists and cornrows. Those styles are interesting and unique to me. Those styles help my texture 4c hair tou grow and im not always worried about it. Long story short you have great points! Ultimately its your choice!

Keep rocking your hair the way you want girl!!!! It’s beautiful! I’m glad I saw your video, I was just decided I wasn’t going straighten or silk press my hair anymore. It feels like every time I’ve had put direct heat on it my ends are damaged even if I get it trimmed.

I straighten my natural hair twice a year for trimming. I use the TYMO straightening brush at 375°. I ditched my flat iron - takes too long. The TYMO takes hardly any time, about 10 mins max.

Your natural hair is beautiful it's nice and thick and healthy. I also have natural hair I wouldn't change it. I get compliments when I'm outside I'm always asked what do I use on my hair. I don't have to run for cover or wear hat or use an umbrella if it's raining. I just love natural hair it's beautiful no matter what texture it is.

Awesome video!!! You address (hit all the pts) on a lot of things that I’ve questioned (to myself) over the yrs. I feel bad for you, because I feel that you are making so many TODAY’s decisions - based on PAST bad experiences. There are a lot of people out here that do natural hair. You & I have the same type of hair & same length. I have had bad experiences as well over the yrs. And I know I have to have like a “hair doctor” someone that has a lot of experiential knowledge. And that are not too much hiking the price, because of the lengthen & coarseness of it. We work together as a team or I move on! I also get the same feedback x 20+ yrs of “….u look so much better w/ your hair like this…”
