I did the math. Over 120,000 people have wishlisted the game on Steam. A common indie game price is $20, but they could go higher than that. Based on the wishlist numbers (they asked people to wishlist the game if they'd ever be interested in buying it), they will have gross sales of at least $2,400,000, which is more than enough to pay a team of their size for long enough to make some great free DLC. Being realistic, they'll easily sell more than 120,000 at launch if it's a good game due to the hype and lack of options in the market. Not to mention with games that make all free updates and DLC, game sales increase when a really good or big update comes out. To emphasize that last part, even Minecraft, most sold game of all time, still sees a significant increase in sales (not including Bedrock's microtransactions) when a great update comes out. The Paralives team has NO damn reason to worry about only having free updates instead of putting out hundreds of dollars in DLC. Anyone familiar with games outside of the Sims would know this.

Now, I had abandoned sims 4, metaphorically since I still own it, and gone back to Sims 3 and recently been playing Sims 1 and I am having so very much fun. Honestly, I've stopped watching most sims 4 youtubers because very few of them acknowledge the problems they had with an expansion during their early access to it, or just in like 30 seconds at the end of a 30 minute video where they gushed over it basically negating those problems. Worse lately a certain youtuber who's name begins with L and ends with sie, was saying about past packs she seriously gushed over but now says was never good. Most have become EA shills. I've been watching smaller youtube creators that play all the games and acknowledge the problems with all of them. Because they are there, we know they are there, for any of them to pretend they are not is gaslighting. So I watch you and a few others that just enjoy the game and don't shill for Sims 4.

i'm a big fan of the sims franchise since the first saga (and life sim games in general), but i totally agree with you in this video; i understand the worry of people about an indie game that wants to do all free, because i'm an indie gamer too and i met a lot of promising games that ends up being abandoned. so we can't deny that it is an existing risk. However, the sims franchise and EA are well known to be the greatest money grabber predators of gaming. and that's a fact. we can't deny that the sims's DLC are too much in an uncessary way. So, I'm very biased in this controversy because I want to wait and see how the situation evolves. and we must stop to do these stupid fandom wars. we are all right and we are all wrong until proven otherwise. (but it is still undeniable that EA's strategies are among the worst, and those who defend them vigorously don't know what they are talking about)

Nice video, EA has always marketed stuff at younger players that are new to videogames so dont have as much experience to understand that their business practices are so bad. Its brilliant that Paralives is going in this direction, i cant wait for it to demonstrate that this is possible with life sims (probably) and standard practice for many videogames in general. Something ive been thinking of is they may release other life sim games in future, with full set up as a fantasy or sci-fi or supernatural game. One of the reasons TS4 keeps releasing paid DLC is that they have no issue making a bloated and chaotic game (think when people with all packs are hit with a bunch of stuff the second they start playing a new save). I am not about that and would much rather see a fun polished game that can one day be called "complete" without trying to fit everything into the same game.

I am NOT a Sims 4 stan and am concerned about this promise of no paid DLC. I in no way think the EA model is the right model. And I do think game basic updates, major ones, being free is fine. But upon rereading what they said on Patreon it also says no PAID DLC just free Updates so it seems instead of pack addins, it seems like there will be no packs at all, it’s just gonna be updates to the game. That being said I am happy not to have to pay for my Paras to get crushes…like Crushes are literally locked behind the HSY paywall in Sims 4…which I don’t own btw. But if I don’t know, a year after the 1.0 release of Paralives they want to add a vacation world that’s like a full Safari pack with Safari specific things I would want to pay for that because that’s gonna fund good work moving forward. If I got things like that as DLC AND continued good updates to the base game that are basic Para life improvements I think that’s the way to be better than EA. I am happy to pay for good, beefy, expansion packs in the far future. Good work deserves to be paid for, especially FAIRLY priced. Which unlike EA, I would trust Paralives to do.

Have you played other games besides The Sims? What Paralives is proposing is actually completely the norm. This is how most games operate - they make money from the game with no DLC. To explain I feel like if you’re a cozy gamer who likes 100% real life(including mods to make it more real) then I would recommend the sims 4 but if you’re a cozy gamer who likes a Life is Strange: True Colors vibe with a sims style of realism when it comes to relationships and skills then I would recommend Paralives. I feel like Paralives went old school with their design and gameplay as well as the free packs and sims 4 went new school with the micro transactions and realism. Oh! I wanted to add that Paralives may have a small team but with their gameplay + the free updates it will show how games used to be and still should be developed. I remember buying a game in the early 2000’s for $50 and could play it for 6 months before needing to buy any dlc and with sims 4 you have a months worth of gameplay before needing to buy more to keep the game interesting.

I have quie a few for what's been shown, but it's geuinely annoying how much of a non-issue this controversy is. Developers can make promises all they want, but all the have is their word. Long comment incoming: I get annoyed by the ‘dlc’ discourse surrounding Paralives by the Sim girlies which ties into my bigger issue with simmers looking at Paralives as a ‘replacement’ for the Sims and not an ‘alternative’ you can play in your game rotation. For people who complain about corporate greed every time a half baked Sims pack drops, you would think they would have supported enough indie games to know what has long been practiced in that space; a single purchase which continues to be fine tuned for as long as they can. I highly doubt that Paralives will be as big (and hopefully not as hollow) as the Sims 4 is. On top of that, when it comes to expansions, what more will the Para-team need to add to the game if everything that is essential to a life sim (but EA decided to slap into a dlc) comes with the basegame like pets, seasons, CHILDREN etc., and with good functionality. Do they want them to release a $10 pack full of t-shirts and chairs? Earth to simmers: no, it is not normal to pay $10 just to be able to make your pc people do laundry. Most Sims DLC is just a single feature with mountains of stuff that most people will never use. Why do they want an oversaturated game that can’t run without making your pc a jet engine even if there isn’t a single mod installed? And even if things that are in the Sims aren’t implemented in Paralives like occults and active careers, they can go play for the Sims for that. Then there is the issue of Sims girlies being unnecessarily critical of what the Para-team devs have shared so far instead of providing constructive criticism, which the devs would have probably liked. There was a comment on the gameplay showcase talking about how boring it looked because it ‘wasn’t wacky enough and looked too normal’ and another about how ‘they play the Sims to live wealthy in a mansion and not grind for cash’. The Sims is not going to disappear off the face of the earth, they can play both or just the Sims or none at all. Point is, they need to stop treating Paralives like it is trying to go toe to toe with EA. They are a team of ten people. Let them make a cozy little life sim for the rest of us that want a realistic feel instead of a grandiose dollhouse simulator and we will judge whatever issues that will pop out of the game once it comes out. Like damn! The simmers have bigger fish to fry like overpriced broken packs, 10 kits a year and a CC cartel being run by the big modders than to be critical of a game that hasn’t come out yet.

i know OF paralives of course, but i haven't really followed much of the development since i was worried it'd never actually be finished/released, considering how many other life sims have died before even being finished. so this is the first time i've even heard about the no paid dlc thing. but if they actually ARE going into early access, then i will definitely be checking it out. i'm not a huge fan of the art style, but if the game actually does happen, i can't say i'm not curious 🤔

Free DLC is the difference between independent development and corporate owned development.

My only concern with the paralives trailer was that I'd like there to be things that can cause things to go wrong and create drama, and I didn't see anything that could cause that from what we've seen so far. The idea of being angry that there's free dlc is ridiculous

Not all game companies are like Blizzard Activision and EA. But a healthy amount of skeptism is okay. That's why NEVER Pre-order and wait for user reviews 😎

There's also a big difference between AAA companies and Indie studios/small teams, one most likely releases games for monetization other in most cases releases games for the passion of making games.

Have you thought about making a discord server so people can send you sims they've made? I made a sim who I think would give Angelina a run for her money..that girl kept slapping the butler for no reason! 😂

Hot take: some of these people want more DLC so that they have bragging rights for being able to own them all. They want to keep up appearances as a type of “collector” of all the Sims stuff or whatever, particularly some folks who have been playing the games since before the Sims 4 came out and also feel morally superior for being the most “diehard” fan. A game without such a DLC model won’t have room for this kind of fandom elitism and they dislike it.

I'm just happy that us life simmers are eating 🤭🤭it's about time the Sims got competition and in different ways. Like I really like that paralives is doing the no paid dlc cause like you said not all of us got money to pay for 70+ dlcs.

Free DLC is great and all, and I get yee8332's perspective but I think it's important to financially support good developers. Especially indie ones. It's their game and more power too them but I think it's less sustainable than people think, not just funding Paralives ongoing support but also any other projects they want to explore. I think indie games are mostly passion projects, which is the backbone of gaming as a whole. Just mostly free DLC is good enough. Even if they go back on that promise and have reasonably priced DLC(unlike EA) then I'm absolutely not going to be mad. Back in the day DLC as a concept wasn't really feasible, what with physical copies and consoles not really having access to the internet, one and done. And DLC is often done in bad faith and extremely greedily these days, but people take continued support for a game and updates for granted. Frick how EA does it tho... anadius is good for more than just leaks btw...

It's official The Sims 4 Community have Stockholm syndrome if there's anything they should be concerned about is why some of their mods have malware? or why they're still buying broken overpriced DLC for a 10 year old game that's also broken? ifykyk.

Ppl don't want to see the free DLC as a good thing because they don't want to admit how much they've been scammed by EA. Yall are VICTIMS 😭

I'm glad I watched this video because I was skeptical about the free DLC updates for Paralives, but it's better those updates are free rather than paid for. The Sims 4 makes you pay for DLC and they STILL release them broken and glitchy. To my knowledge they still have not fixed My Wedding Stories and that came out almost 2 years ago. If Paralives releases broken DLC at least we don't have to worry about our money being wasted. Hopefully they'll carefully test their updates before releasing it (which is the bare minimum!). We have all been traumatized by The Sims 4's greed 🤣 and this is why I refuse to buy any more packs from them and play the older games.

I’m not a Sims 4 Stan. I’m concerned about free DLC because I’m not sure how sustainable that is for indie devs specifically. Don’t mind being wrong lol I care because I like what I’ve seen so far and want the devs to do well long term. Planet Zoo and other simulation games I play all have reasonably priced dlc. I wouldn’t want to work for free and don’t expect devs to. Small updates should definitely be free.

I still have yet to see something that really excites me about Paralives sadly. I understand that the footage is not the final product but the game looks a bit lifeless to me so far, I don't know why. Now this doesn't come from a Sims 4 fanboy POV as I barely even play that game anymore and I also have mostly critiques for the game, but I really hope Paralives gets some more personality. It seems like it has the Sims 4 problem of being a mostly millenial y/a simulator but even more extreme than sims 4. It's the truest version of the words "life simulation" instead of a "life simulation game".

Oh my… a sims 4 video and comment section with common sense?! I didn’t think it existed! How anyone is still paying that company I have no idea. And dragging down the other games at the same time? I urge them all to play literally any other non major title game

I had to stop playing the sims 4. As cool as the mods were they still couldn't fix the mountain of problems that game has. Well, not permanently, all the updates from the pantom support of EA kept breaking my mods. Got fed it. And just quit.
@cibram2309 ай бұрын
Honestly I find myself a little worried about the fact that the game's content is updated through large free updates. I feel like it's going to be a bit like other games, where in each update the game receives a lot of content that might not be used or wanted and this will somehow oversaturate the game experience or make the game heavier. I would be worried about having a game that gets heavier and slower the more they update it. I really hope that they are completely optional and eligible dlc, where I can choose what content to include and what not, as if they were official, easy-to-install mods...
@Hunnypooh182 ай бұрын
I'm honestly confused about the so-called "concern" about free dlc. Stardew Valley did just fine giving free major updates. It brought people to the game and they were overjoyed to pay one price. Seriously, simmers are WILD.

imo, there should be paid something such as cosmetics per se as this will help with future development of the game. But with or without those dlcs the game should be playable.

Minecraft has free major DLC every single year for nearly a decade and a half. Often twice a year. And they are owned by Microsoft, another notoriously greedy company. Terraria has been updated so many times despite the devs saying it's the last update that the "final update" has become an injoke in the community. Free content is not only doable, but commonplace at this point.
@Vhmvd9 ай бұрын
I'm a bit skeptic about "all future dlcs being free", if EA overpriced dlcs more or less shitty, I'm not sure if working on a dlc without getting financially motivated is right, talk about half-assed dlc with no passion. but i want to be wrong ... so I'll wait.
@Miochh9 ай бұрын
Paralives team does get funded by Patreon for example, they have quite a bit of supporters so they probably did the financial accounting and came to the conclusion they don't want to release any paid dlcs.
@danielkay55559 ай бұрын
Also the game is already set to come with pets, weather, cars, boats. That's the major thing that ea splits into packs. I don't mind if the other stuff come out in a simplified free dlc like the vaccations or uni.
@fransmith32558 ай бұрын
"without getting financially motivated"...how about instead getting motivated to simply make a wonderful product that gives pleasure to a lot of people. That's the kind of motivation that Paralives has, and that's faaaaaar better than any financial motivation. Financial motivation leads to companies like EA... Passionate motivation to make a great product actually leads to...great products. And there are a lot of games that are great products on Steam.

The Sims has always been special to me, but I am honestly done with it. I will forever thank TS1, 2 and 3 for all those wonderful memories. But it's time to move on. TS 5 will NOT be a competitor of Paralives and LBY. And if EA and Maxis has any decency, they will let that game rest in peace instead of shamelessly milking it like there's no tomorrow.
