Why I was wrong about PROJECT CARS 3

Almost a year ago, Marvin came to the conclusion that Project Car 3 was a successful game, contrary to many opinions. But he now corrects this statement in this video. Tune in and find out which contents of PC3 he saw differently back then and how he sees the game now.

I'm in the credits of this game and could talk for hours about it's development and some of the design choices made. On paper, pC3 genuinely wasn't a bad idea and even as a hardcore sim guy I fully supported the shift in direction (which was intended to be an offshoot similar to forza horizon, the name change to pCars 3 came at the eleventh hour and you can find remnants of the original name in the file structure and some promo material). Over the span of several years though, little decisions had a butterfly effect. IMO the biggest problem was it recycled too much content from pC2. If they had included just street cars, supercars, and street circuits, then sold the game at like $30, it would have been a spiritual successor to PGR and been a nice pick-up & play racer with fairly realistic handling. A sandbox for vehicle upgrades and quick little ranked races. The moment they started putting almost everything from pC2 into pC3, (basically the entire pc2 car/track roster, untouched), it gave the game a really weird identity and too many people looked at it and said "why wouldn't I just play pC2?" The unfortunate part is that from a tech side, so many important leaps were made. We fixed some really important things that fans were asking for. A lot of weird tire model issues were finally sorted out, as were FFB issues and pad handling filters. But like, because the actual game was such a weird hodgepodge of features and content, nobody really cared.

@@danek8036 I wish Reiza polished their game a little more. You can tell they literally just took the madness engine, gave it a new UI, and inserted their own cars and tracks.

It launched without ffb and had almost no wheel support until updated. Biggest mistake imo was not calling it project cars race or similiar but lauching it as a numbered addition to the franchise killed pcars/project cars ipo. Its obvious this was the planned mobile version of the game and just a cash grab that you had nothing to do with.

@@AustinOgonoski I have to disagree, loved PC2, couldn't believe what they did with PC3 but Reiza took on the challenge and have done a fantastic job and they continually update the game both from a physics and content perspective and most important it is one hell of a fun sim slotting in nicely in between the heavy weights. The new content with CART's, the vintage F1, GTE glorious graphics that does not need a monster GPU, I could go on and on... Could and should have been PC3 especially with the bigger team Madness had and money behind it!

@@AustinOgonoski as someone who got AMS2 the week it was released, I can say that they have sloooooowly but surely been chipping away at it. It’s gone a long way. Sure, they aren’t a big studio and we all wish things would work faster (they still have so many UI quirks/bugs, and their initial roadmaps were hilariously optimistic), but I think they tend to point in the right direction. Would you?

There's no reason why the game couldn't take the best elements of both arcade racing and simulations. Like with Gran Turismo, turning tyre wear on and off, simple stuff like that.

Totally agree with this. Gran Turismo has pit stops, just that it's only relevant much later in the game when you start doing endurance racing. But it's always there. This is why PC3 really irks me, it killed any chances of having a long race.

FM has pit stops, tyre wear etc. But - many games (almost all), which are positioned as a simulator, have the ability to turn off damage, tire wear, fuel consumption, enable assistants, etc. For me Project Cars 3 was a hit to face, I didn't hesitate to pre-order it and now the game is lying in the Steam garbage.

Here's the problem though: The backers wanted a true racing sim, and even the first game was disappointing. See posts by EmptyBox or anyone who actually plays the top racing sims. I backed the first one myself. The beta builds were far closer to a simulation. We made jokes that it was just Need for Speed: Shift. And then 3 actually was. The sim fans WERE the target audience. And then they weren't, and so they couldn't properly get both.

@@X1erra Think they were too busy rushing it out to actually stop and play FM7 or GTS. People love comparing it to Forza, But FM7 actually had the foresight to let you change the length of career races for a start. I could forgive this, if the framerate was actually stable - even on a Series X 🤨

Do you think sim game like Rfactor or Assetto Corsa cannot had it's mechanical system like tyre wear being shut off. No one would enjoy of game if it's force you to be great from the start, and even in those kinda sim they still allow you to be a beginner with assists like ABS or TC.

They shot themselves in the foot. They marketed the game wrong by calling it Project Cars 3. They should have made it like an spin-off type of game just like Xbox does with Forza Horizon. It should have been Project Cars Turbo or some BS like that. Now they have a long road to recovery if they ever decide to make a 4th installment. Sim drivers are going to be skeptical about purchasing the game if they aren't sure if the game will be more arcade or if it will be an actual driving simulation game.

That's why I have a try before I buy attitude whenever possible. Yes, this apparently makes me a heinous criminal, but if I hadn't cracked PC2 there's no way I'd have ever bought it. Which I did, with DLCs. Went through the same process with PC3, did not buy it. Thanks, common sense.

there will never be a project cars 4. This game trashed the Project Cars name. They will have to reboot the series under a different name if they want to avoid having a completely skeptical audience before and during launch season. You never want to have to win over an angry audience with any project and that's what project cars 4 would have to do. If they're smart they'll reboot it under a new name to have a fresh start

Aaaand looks like they went and _sawed off their other foot_ (or they're running out of money...) - as they just pulled ALL purchase avenues for Project Cars 2 for good today. :( No official physical or digital purchasing available anywhere (can still find some straggler keys from key-resellers, while they last at least), and Project Cars 1 will be pulled this October 3rd... They've officially shot-down license renewals for everything geared towards enthusiasts, which is not a great sign.

Hey, if you just want to jump in and do 10 or 15 laps without all the fuss, this simcade is a blast. The problem is not the sim, but the influencers. They spend their lives racing all day, fine tuning the cars, the pitstops, the time of day, the weather, etc, they luv it. Well that's for them. But there are many of us that don't spend our lives on sim racing and just want to have fun. I find the PC3 cars to be much more fun to drive than on, what I call, the spin out sims. If you just want fun racing, this is the game for you!

For what it is, it's a fun game. Whenever family or friends stop by to see the sim rig, PC3 is the game that I fire up for them. You know, to build up their confidence. Then, when they're having fun and the trash talking starts to get out of hand, I crush their spirits with RaceRoom, rFactor2, AMS2, or ACC. They start complaining that RaceRoom, rFactor2, AMS2 and ACC are too hard and they want to play PC3 again. So PC3 does have entertainment value.

I’ve never played PC3 but I know for sure I’d never let anyone who wanted to try my sim rig play it in my sim rig. If It’s feels anything like PC2 there’s no way PC3 would be an impressive first impression. For this I use AC with, CM , CSP and SOL. Hopefully someday I can use AMS2.

Probably worse, even the kids aren't interested because it's not arcade enough. They wanted it to be everything and ended up becoming nothing, it's a common amateur artist/creator mistake.

NFS Shift was fantastic. Very good way for a newcomer to get into track racing. On Xbox 360 with a steering wheel it was a great experience for me.

This video came a year and a half too late... What's the point of it, when everyone with a bit of interest in SIM racing already knows that PC3 failed at so many levels even before it was released. The CEO continued to make false promises which today it make me think or either he was lying from the beginning or he didn't have a clue about SIM racing and what the SIM racing community value.

Loved pc1 & 2 warts and all... just could not believe what I saw when the first trailer came out... It just got worse from that point. Im firmly in the quick 10-20 minute race crowd but it must be authentic to real world and pc3 with its blocked pits, magic tyres, notably worse graphics, weird car movements, neon flashing signs, dude bro tents everywhere, horrific class matching on track etc... was just a bad bad dream. So dissapointed...

I disagree with your notion that project cars 2 didn't deliver. IMO it's still the best (and probably only) racing sim that offers a fleshed-out career. Where you can go from a grassroots category all the way up to the top echelons of motorsport. And although ACC or iracing may offer better physics engines, that emersion that's achieved by the career is what did it for me.

Wow, I just got project cars three a month ago and I love it. I got it on a steam sale and have all the DLC for it and I have been having a blast especially California highway. I’m glad I got to the game now and not when they initially had released.

I simply did not like it. I tried the first couple of races and quickly realised PC3 was definitely not for me. PC1 and 2 by comparison are so much better even though PC1 hasn't been supported in ages. I GAVE my game away; asking for money would have been insulting!!

PCARS 3's main Problem, IMO, was Ian Bell not telling the Truth! :( Had He just told the Truth and Said "we have made an Arcade Racing Game to try and Help the Franchise sell better on Console" Instead of telling us, Barefaced, that it was what it most certainly is *not* , a "Sim" " , I think the Game would have been *Far* better Received. Why Codemasters did not allow it to be Sold as Project CARS -Shift, as a Spin off (and a Nice Shoutout back to SMS's Roots too!) I will never know, as that also probably would have helped People to see that, given PCARS 2 is very much a Sim-Cade Game (Again, see it as a Sim and You are going to hate it, to "Get" what PCARS 2 is, You have to compare it to Forza Motorsport or Gran Turismo, as a Sim-Cade, not to a Real Sim like Assetto Corsa, which will Drive Rings around it!) A La Forza Motorsport, that this Game was going to be more like PCARS answer to Forza Horizon, an Arcade Spin off, and it would have been Received Better. Ideally they, IMO, should have removed all the Racing Cars, added in considerably more Road Cars, and then made the Game Open World around the "Azure Coast" Location (Say 100KM2 Map?) based around the "CARS" Festival (Like how TC2 has "Motornation", basically just the Horizon Festival with the Chassis Number Swapped!) , to give PCARS a True Rival to Forza Horizon to go along with PCARS 2 as its Forza Motorsport Rival. Sadly, it was not to Be :( There is a good Arcade Game here, and that's its Problem, its an Arcade Game, wearing the Name and Reputation of a Pretty Good "Sim Cade" Game :( Peace.

Many years ago when 60 dollars was a lot of money for me, I did pay it to fund PC1 because I was a huge fan of Shift 2, the promise of a Shift 2 with full simulation was like a dream for me and at the time there where no racing games like Gran Turismo or Forza on PC, what I imagined it to be was a GT with better physics with support for all racing gear. PC1 was a HUGE disappointment for me and felt like a rushed and incomplete game, for me just felt like Shift 2 but worse because it didn't have any of the customization and progression aspect of Shift 2 and the physics were just slightly better than Shift 2, you could feel how similar Shift 2 and PC1 physics were by the way SMS try to emulate downforce and that made me ignore for years PC2, I got PC2 on sale for like 5 dollars and OMG PC2 still didn't have the customization of Shift 2 but as a Racing Simulator it was a great game. So I got hyped for PC3, but thank god I didn't pay before the game release, when I watched the first trailer for PC3 I just lol really hard and just forgot it. What a shame.

When I first got to realise that PC3 had removed a lot of manual customisation with most reviewers pointing out the game had arcade style, ngl I was so so disappointed...but after playing the game I can definitely say, although I’d want them to bring back customisation of PC2 but the gameplay physics, the vehicle sounds and attention to detail on realism of and experience of racing in PC3 is just on another level of spectacular ...

The best thing came out from the pCARS franchise is that they sold the Madness engine to Reiza. So there is simulator pCARS, but it's called Automobilista 2. 😉

I honestly don't mind them going the arcade direction they did with PC3 - they should just have made it clear that was what they were doing. The dishonesty of pretending you are making the ultimate simulator to your fans and then slinging them a crap version of GRID made that change very hard to bear though. The thing I really don't get though is how they made it look worse than PC2, whilst also performing worse - especially in VR. PC2 remains a great looking game and is optimised so well you can really crank that supersampling for extra bling. No matter what I do with PC3 though it just look awful, jaggy and with flickering textures a constant problem. If I have people around and they want a more arcade style racer, instead of a full on sim, my go to remains PC2 as you can easily make that feel arcadey enough for people, the car selection is incredible and the graphics are still gorgeous. PC3 sits in a weird place where it worse in all ways, even if you actually want an arcade racer. I say open the trash up for modding and let the modding community fix what the developer clearly doesn't care about.

The main problem with project cars 3 is that they called it project cars 3. If they had called it anything else or added something like Horizon at the end they wouldn't have had that back of a backlash. They could've advertised as a more casual racing game

I think PCars 2 was pretty good. Could have been better in some areas, but overall I thought it was decent. If only PCars 3 had just been another improvement over what PCars 2 tried to do, I would have bought it for one, but also I think it would have been a great success.

To each their own. I am not a super ultra hyper mega expert in racing sim games, and I'm sure the huge majority of gamers aren't either. Yeah, I get the thing of Project Cars that caters to a particular segment but hey, lots of us regular dudes can grab a game like that one and enjoy the set of cars, races and beautiful tracks. I think the devs just wanted a piece of that cake of a market.

The problem is the false advertising. They advertised PC3 as the a more realistic racing sim than PC2, when it's literally the opposite. They should have been honest and advertised it to casual racers, instead of hardcore sim racers.

The only problem I see with this game was the title / marketing. Make it a spinoff, Call it Project Cars: Skyline, or Project Cars: GT or something like that and you're golden. People were so butthurt, understandably to a certain degree, because they were expecting a sim, but the game itself was great. Best handling and realistic arcade Racer out there. The way the tires and the chassis felt on a controller no less, oh my god. Really extraordinary.

Unfortunately it’s a lot worse and the VR is broken, there’s a bug they never fixed between simucube 2 bases and VR with black screen at the start of every race… thanks to steam I refunded it right after buying it on sale. It’s not even worth 25% of the price.

For me as a gamepad player, PC2 was little to hard on rainy and snowy conditions. I loved NFS Shift 2 handling (with fixed input lag ofc), and i kind of liked PC3. I would love it, if not the bugs. I knew its gonna be more gamepad racing game, like Shift, before i purchased it, and i was really happy about handling again. But twitchy opponents (fixable on Nv GPU by ultra low latency mode - also shortening extremaly long loading times, unfortunately unfixable on AMD GPU, which i have now), crazy FAST AI on SOME tracks, and crazy SLOW on OTHER tracks, with many smaller bugs made me regret i bought it so early. This is literały last game i bought after release. But today, i have this installed and enjoy it. Its fixes collision with other cars on tracks, which was most hated issue by myself (when my car joined (melted) other car and we both fall of the track).

Is it a decent game as is, say compared to Forza and Gran Turismo or GRID, cause from the gameplay I've seen it looks like those kinds of games. Which isnt a bad thing at all, I own Project Cars 2 and its kinda boring, the career mode isnt very good, I prefer games like Forza and Gran Turismo or GRID. The only problem I keep people repeating are from expectations of the brand name, no one talks about the actual gameplay, the tracks or career mode. Hell I still play GT4 often because of the career mode, its made for longevity . It seems to me that the main problem was the game being called Project Cars and people had their associations and expectations with that name brand already. They should have just called it Racing Game, cause its hard to find a decent review from someone who doesn't mention the expectations of other people when trying to decide if its good or not.

They should have not gone down the route they did. They could have improved on what was great in project cars 2. It wasn’t perfect but it was an amazing game, with good physics, amazing engine sounds and good track and car choice. But there were plenty of improvements to make. It never quite reached the realism or steering wheel feel of assetto corsa, but the graphics and sounds were better. Was so disappointed with project cars 3. Let’s hope they sort it out for the fourth game.

SMS was really going somewhere. The improvement from PC1 to PC2 was immense. Imagine what 3 could have been after learning what they did right in the first 2 and reimplementing that and learning what was done wrong and improving it further. People didn't critiziced at launch because by the time it launched all the rage was already delivered and no one care about PC3 or it was even forgotten. It's one of the biggest epic fails born dead of the industry in the recent years and was really a bad joke for all the fans who were expecting an improved PC2 with all the variety it had, with a competent multiplayer that could rival against the popes of simracing. The fun part is that a really small studio like Reiza is achieveing more in automobilista 2 and little by little patching all the problems and mistakes PC2 engine had. I don't know how someome could not feel ashamed of watching a studio with less budget and smaller that is taking your product and making all the improvements you were ment to make that you ran away from.

PC1 for me was messaged up by making the game on all consoles. They should have just released it for next gen or last gen consoles and cancelling the wiiu version hit alot of people. That said PC2 was kind of the game that put alot of rights wrong fixing the console issues and looked alot more next gen. I feel that game won alot of people over. I feel with PC3 they thought making it a game for everyone would make it a hit kind of like how FH is but I felt PC3 should have been a spin off game if they had done that and said PC3 was coming in the next 2 years they would have won alot of people over. As a racing fan I'm said to see pc no longer an ip as the racing gore is not what it was 15ish years ago.

PC3 was a wasted cash cow opportunity. Being a fan of the Shift titles I know SMS would have succeeded with a more accessible racing title, but it should have been a spin-off while continuing support for PC2 until they felt its limits had been reached and a proper sequel was warranted. I mean SCS Studios has been supporting ETS2 for a bit shy of a decade now while improving upon the game and keeping it fresh so it can be done. I only morbidly kept track of the updated PC3 content thinking with dismay that they would have been great additions to PC2.
