That's why I own a used depreciated Porsche. I'm enjoy the drive and ownership, while not worried about getting dents, scratches, etc.

I started watching your videos 2 years back. I was inspired to be an engineer in Germany. I moved to Germany last year and I'm currently 2 months away from completing my masters in mechanical engineering. When I work my way up to being able to afford a Porsche, i will definitely buy one.

I'm looking to buy a used BMW M3. I've always wanted to own one since my early 20s but I did the sensible thing and bought a house. At 40 it's doable. Sure I could use the money towards paying off my mortgage but you have to enjoy life as well, it's a fine balance. Worst case I will own it for a year and lose some money, at least I will have the ticked off the experience. There's no point buying one when I'm 60.

That is true. For everything you own there is a cost beyond the price. If the benefit is bigger just buy it and if your assumptions prove wrong, sell it again. You seem to be someone, who thinks before he acts and who plans long term. I am sure, you are doing very well in life and financially probably, too.

I completely understand all of your reasoning, but I just disagree (very much subjectively). I bought a brand-new Porsche last December and it brings me endless joy. I've always wanted a Porsche, not for 'appearances' or 'branding', but for the well-known engineering, quality, performance, and driving experience. I think if cars are your passion (and they are mine), then the downsides of ownership (cost, getting a scratch etc) are amply offset by the sheer pleasure of owning and driving a Porsche. Worth every penny for me 😁
@parttimepart

That is very true. I think for most people it is not. Imagining yourself owning and driving a Porsche might not reflect the reality once you actually have one. But the Porsche is just an example. When you look at the stuff you have owned over your lifetime you will find things that were expensive and made your life worse. Part of the message is to identify those, get rid of them and learn from that experience.

I take it your not into cars, a porshe is about the driving experience, its a reliable well made supercar, 30-40k will get you a nice Porsche and nothing else drives like them, if it gets scratched or a mark on the leather seats 🤷🏻‍♂️ so what, its made to be used.

You say it is not money but it is money (you are also prudent - which is great). I drive Porsche and if I break it, dent it or something, I don’t care. I just buy another one if I still like Porsche at that point. This is when you can afford it.
@parttimepart
@parttimepart 28 күн бұрын
More power to you. If a Porsche creates positive value in your life and you can afford it, just drive one. I will never buy one, even if I could afford someone, who takes care of maintenance, insurance etc. and I would just have to get in and drive it. Everything you own, owns you back. That is probably my conclusion.

Porsche wahrscheinlich nichts mehr, was dir Sorgen bereitet.
@parttimepart
@parttimepart 25 күн бұрын

2:29. Yeah, as with most of his thoughts, Marx had a pretty uninformed point of view. It truly is a mistake to believe that an emergent property, such as price, it ever just "made up." Any more than a particular orbit around a gravitational well is just made up. Emergent properties appear in complex systems because they represent the point at which the system balances. So they have to be measured at the system level, and not at the component level. Thus price is an attribute of a market, not an attribute of a good. Just like orbit is an attribute of a gravitational system, and not an attribute of a rock. Yes, price is not an attribute which we can measure from the unit itself, but that doesn't mean it's made up. Price is an interpsychic coordination mechanism for the value of a thing *as agreed upon by the market*. If you price a thing too low, you will not be able to afford to produce it, as the price will not allow you to command the resources required to do so, and thus so it will not sell. If you price a thing too high, it will not clear in the market (market clearing price is the highest price a good will actually sell at), so again, it will not sell. If you think price is just a made up figure, try opening a lemonade stand, pricing your product at a cool million per 8oz glass, and see if you sell any. What this means is everything in the market competes for the available resources at hand, and only those things priced such that they are able to clear (that is sell), AND those things which can do so profitably (that is at a cost less to produce than their clearing price), actually continue. Thus through this competition with every other item, and over time, assuming a stable currency, prices adjust to establish comparative value within the market in accordance with supply and demand pressures. (This is a simplified model of what actually happens, but it's directionally correct. In reality, most items establish themselves at a price far lower than their clearing price, as greater profit is realized by great market penetration.) However, just because an item finds and establishes a clearing price, which one can take as its market value (the highest price a good will actually clear), that does not mean that thing is held in equal regard by all market actors. In fact, every market actor values every item in the market differently than every other market actor. This is why trade exists. If two actors value an item an equal amount, a trade will not happen. In order for trade to occur, both market actors must value what the other has more than what they have, and that means they definitely are not in agreement, as both actors believe they got the better deal, which is why they did it. The OP is making a fantastic argument for why he doesn't value luxury goods, but clearly the "market" doesn't agree with him, or they wouldn't sell. This is an example of the plurality of opinions within a free market. But just because different actors have different opinions, that doesn't mean an actor has to resort to saying "price is made up" just because he doesn't want to pay it. If price were somehow baked into a good (which is impossible for reasons previously explained), that still doesn't mean an actor would be obliged to pay that price, just because he pulled out his price ruler and measure it. It would be like walking down the aisle of a grocery store and having to buy everything you see, just because you agree with the price. No one acts that way, even if they do agree with the price.
