The real reason why urban women are choosing to have 1 child is the abysmal absence of early childcare support infrastructure. Raising a baby is an isolating and exhausting experience, the dis-proportionate burden for which falls upon the mother regardless of her employment status. Nuclear families. Lack of organized/qualified domestic help. Very few quality day-cares. To add fuel to the fire, we look upon mothers as "non working women" if they step off corporate work. Any wonder that women don't want to do this a second time ? Unfortunately, this reason wont come up in research studies and we will keep looking at solutions in the wrong places. We need to invest in early childcare infra + recognize the true value of raising kids. @Mohak I think the choice of this video sponsor is in poor taste for your otherwise superb series.

If they won't get ready to witness another Taliban here then all the women empowerment will be under the bin

A very big reason. Most women are expected to take care of the house, sometimes the in laws, go through pregnancy(which takes such a toll physically and emotionally) , take care of the kid and work and earn. If you don't work anymore then people judge you, I heard my friend the other day saying "eww being a housewife". It's too much. Who wants this life?

@@RRC879 Only if they cared about development they wouldn't have abandon women from doing all stuffs in the first place. You don't know how islam works simple. They believe more in afterlife then the present one. I hate to say this, but a patriarchal institution, society or culture will always dominate an egalitarian or a matriarchal one. The data of plummeting birth rate of Hindus is already visible, so in the upcoming decades the catastrophic results will soon be seen. Those who are living in an utopian dream of a superpower India won't see it because before that a huge civil war would've already been happening. Islam isn't a yesterday phenomena iyk. Y'all are just feeded through westerners and puke it everywhere, but forget the surroundings and the nature of western society of how it's build. We should follow China more rather than the west, but insecure democrats will come out of holes and start shaming and crying over pity rights.

You please do whatever you want but keep it to yourself. I am very clear that my free time and my extra money will be spent on animal shelters, and on throwing pizza parties for the homeless and assistive technology for the poor & disabled and if any money or time still remains that will be for my hobbies and my retirement. Women are independent in developed world right? Then let them work 50 hours a week job and earn their own luxury. Because I have not stupid to sign off my freedom or my money to someone who is able bodied and can earn it themself but still plan to take it from me. And I am also not an idiot who thinks mind reading and telling who is right and who is wrong is possible, because it is not. People play put up extremely realistic acts when there is a lifetime of free paycheques on the line lmao. And I don't need to play those games. Never do things that bind you with chains, especiall unbreakable legal chains that can continue draining your cash till the end of your life and also despite your innocence throw you in jail lol. Life has become very costly now. Nowadays most educated people are moving to one child because surviving in today's environment is not easy, price of everything has been growing up by 4-5 folds as it is used to be earlier some 10-15 years ago. Inflation, unemployment rate and meagre economic resources also put pressure on families. Every educated wants to avoid vicious cycle of poverty.

Also, to add, this is just something that I have unfortunately come across as a child. My mother is a working woman(9-5) job with the same salary as that of my father. But teaching me, taking care, making food for the family and children, emotionally and mentally supporting me etc has always been done by her. No support whatsoever from father other than dropping to school in the morning. In fact, he has been more of a trouble than help, abusive, ignorant and negligent. So when the weight of parenting completely falls on one parent and the other parent is just there for the sake of it, it's horrible. Children who have lived such a life for 20/22 years no longer want to continue such a toxic cycle and hence many chose to not have kids at all.

Honestly if u put this statement infront of economist , they will declare you selfish resource for future (Term in economics ). @@नयनगिरडकर see I am not saying anything about one child and its economic impact and blah blah blah. Also, don't make me a fool there is no term like a "selfish resource of future" in economics. I have a commerce background so I know what are basic economic terms and concepts and I also know If Everyone started having one child then it can be problematic but the thing is having kids is not only about being financially capable but being mentally prepared is important too. You can't raise two children only by giving birth and arranging sufficient money. You have to take care of their health, education, career etc. There are a lot of responsibilities involved and to take those you have to be mentally prepared and strong. If a person is not mentally prepared for taking the responsibilities of more than one child then he would only choose to have one kid so, you can't expect or force him to have two children. Like you said that "if you don't have any kids then who is going to take care of you in your old age?" Does having kids grantees that your kid is not going to leave you ?? I see a lot of parents, especially from educated communities where their kids have sidelined them even though their parents had spent their whole life in raising them. And by the way, if I and my life partner have no problem with not having kids then what's your problem? Are you going to take responsibility??

"The greatest devotion you can do today is not to have a baby". it really holds true. our world is full of people and we are overburdening it with more people so it's high time that we should appreciate the real heroes who are choosing to be child-free. Especially the women or couples who don't want to have a kid or not want to be a parent should be awarded accepted and appreciated. Having a single child is a nice decision and thank you to all the people who are choosing this. by choosing this you are not only giving a great life and attention to the kid but also a comfortable life to you. I request all the new generations of future parents to opt for one child or no child. we need to do this for our planet. and this is the greatest devotion you can give to the planet and to ourselves as human beings.

This one child phenomena is actually bad for society because problem of competition remains same... A single child born in india can never have a same amount of resources compared to a child born in America ,Scandinavia or west europe because this phenomenon of raising single child started first in these developed countries so they will get benifits first too

I believe the fertility question may be answered by environmental degradation. Higher pollution is associated with PCOS, or PCOS like symptoms, which is impacting women and individuals across economic classes as well as both rural and urban. Which is why India needs to deal with the looming climate crisis, just like all other countries have to, starting IMMEDIATELY.

Here they're not talking about the actual health. They're talking about fertility rate fertility rate is the ratio between the number of live births in a year and the whole female population of childbearing age (average number of women between 15 and 50 years of age over the year)
