If you watched Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference then you probably remember this graphic, which compared the install base of the latest version of iOS, to the latest version of Android’s OS. Both of which were released about six months ago. And as you can see, there is quite a big disparity. And in this video we’re going to find out why, in addition to discussing why iOS has never experienced this problem.

Expert clarification. Open Source and Licensing go hand in hand. It all depends on the license. You can have open source licenses, but that comes with a license. Some licenses allow you to make your own changes and release without any additional fees, however some open source licenses have rules around enterprise sales and commercial products. For instance you could have the Android Source Code, but to bundle it with thousands of phones, you need to pay Google for the license. But the source code is available to everyone. Capiche

@@texasmama3084 updates aren't really that important on Android anyways. Google has extracted most of it's core apps and services into the play store, so they get updated whenever an update is available, just like a normal app. iOS requires giant system updates because it's own apps get updated all at once and are tied to the system, whereas Google apps are more modular and just update on their own. Even security is updated separately on Android, so you really should have no worries. The only thing that a full system update is for is upgrading to entirely new versions of Android, like Android 10 to 11, and most of the time those aren't even that big anyways. Anyways, you can also just flash any rom you want if you really care that much. The biggest reason you even hear update complaints is with specific skins, like OneUi, not Android. So if you really care, just get a phone with stock Android, or just flash a stock Android rom, and you're set.

I missed the basic explanation between Android Open Source Project and Google Services installed on top of AOSP. Google and the Open Handset Alliance develops Android. The base of Android is becomes Open Source when Google puts up the source code on the interwebs, but it can change anytime, it's depends on Google with the future releases. Google Services and Apps are NOT open source. You have to licence the Google Part of Android, and Huawei recently lost their licence to Google Suite but not for AOSP. They can manufacture devices with EMUI without Google Play and Google Apps in the future with no problem, i will explain later... Google Pixels are using the Google Fork of AOSP, if you examine closer it's not so stock anymore, of course it comes with their own Google Suite of apps preinstalled and other Pixel Only customizations. If you look this way, stock android does not exist. We should call Pixel devices close to stock Android. Android One and GO phones similar to Google's own fork but less care on special features, mainly optimized for lower resources and quicker security updates. Other manufacturers using their own fork of Android with their own set of customizations and if they are in sync with Google's minimum requirements they can install Google Suite on top of their software. (The cost is not public.) That's how you get sometimes double apps for the same purpose with Samsung, LG, Huawei, Xiaomi, because not every region using Google Suite. The manufacturers are want to be prepared for loosing the Google Licence that's why they pushing their own App Store, Music, Video, Gaming platforms, and for profit as well.

Yeah I hate the hate the way that google misleadingly calls android open-source; any meaningful android device better have access to the play store, which as you said, is walled behind their proprietary google mobile services, and EVEN WORSE, it costs a lot of money to get "google mobile services certification", which is required for any phone model to have GMS shipped with it. Sadly, there are no truly open source play store competitors that actually compare with the play store with regards to the quality and quantity of available apps.

Great video and explanation though there is one glaring problem: you mentioned that android and windows are open source. This is in fact, partly incorrect. Open source software is software with publicly available and reviewable source code. Android is mostly open source since you can find much of its source code available for viewing. Windows on the other hand is closed source/proprietary which means that the code is not available to the public and is kept secret. The same goes of any of Apple's OSs. What you were actually trying to say was simply a difference in licensing structure where android and windows are licensed to 3rd party vendors, while iOS is NOT licensed and is therefore only available on devices made by Apple.

Android is only partially open source. The basic framework of Android is open source, but the final version, licensed to OEMs for modification, is not. This is why Huawei cannot use Android like it does now, but must switch over to their own OS, which is based on the open source framework, therefore still compatible with Android apps without doing business with Google.

Simple explanation: Apple does everything themselves, and they release their iOS updates at the same time to everyone, and phones going back 5 years+ still get new updates. Android: controlled by carriers and manufacturers. If you want the newest update, get a Pixel. Except only a minority care about the newest updates. Also, most phones only get 2 years worth of updates.

@@Josmersuero Not everyone can afford to drop $700+ on a new phone every few years. If Apple really wants their market share to expand, then they really need to cut the price, or just have a lower end device. Maybe just one camera on the back, LCD panel with lower resolution, etc. Fact of the matter is that many people simply need a phone to make calls, and access services that can easily be handled by cloud computing services, which is one of the reasons why Android Go is a thing that Google recently launched. An extremely stripped down version of Android made for entry-level devices, a market that few people are focusing on. Fact of the matter is that, until fairly recently, phones occupied the same territory that personal computers did just 20 years ago, where if you wanted something to remain useful for future tasks, you had to buy something high end for the time, and while GPUs were still like that for a while, CPU's, at least for the general consumer, almost went stagnant, while GPU's continued to improve, until fairly recently again. Looking at Nvidia's RTX lineup, performance in traditional rendering isn't that much better over what we've seen in previous generations, and for some, there really isn't an upgrade path they'd be happy with, mainly owners of the GTX 1080 Ti (of which, I am one of them). These days, unless you are running something particularly demanding, they're isn't really that good of a reason to upgrade every year or two anymore. The "shitty cheap phones" are the most crucial corner of the market that Apple is ignoring, probably because they want to continue being seen as a luxury brand. The phone I had before I got my Galaxy S9+ (late February of this year) was a cheap ass Windows Phone from the same year the iPhone 6 was new.

Even if one was to buy an iPhone 7 today which has had a new battery installed, you could still expect it to run for another 2 more years with regular security patches and some new features as they arrive with each new iOS major update with decent performance. The equivalent Android flagships of that era such as the Pixel, Galaxy S7/S7 Edge, LG G5 etc are basically now no longer getting new updates and they're getting slower and slower in every day use. Sure you could root and install a custom rom and kernel to increase the longevity but that in turn, blocks you from using many apps that do not support rooted devices. And if you don't have a Pixel, chances are that you're stuck with a device that has a ridiculous amount of bloat on it. I have a Note8 and an S8 and as much as I'd love to root them, I can't use my work apps if I did so.

To be honest, android OS on a tablet isn't pleasing to me. Even though I'm on an android phone... I view a tablet as an entertainment device and android doesn't feel like an entertainment OS:/

4:02 Most? Lol. Try hardly any. Samsung and google phones are the only dependable brands on android for software support. Anyone else you’ve been handed a miracle to get a single update and even more miraculous if you get it before it’s 2 versions behind.

Even Samsung has sucked for years with updates. Google is the only company that's done it for most of its main series's lifetime. It's one of the reasons that I got a Pixel 6a

4:52 If you have a unlocked phone you can do something called flashing a custom ROM. Super easy stuff to do, just download the stuff for your specific phone model, flash the custom bootloader, do some stuff in it, then flash the custom Android ROM, and bravo, you have the latest version of Android, plus OTA support in the case of Lineage OS on my mother's OP3

@@brandon8987 It's very easy, and easier than Jailbreak in most cases, depends on the device. Pixel, International Samsungs, Alcatel are the easiest to flash

I would love to buy a Google pixel with a stock android, but it is not officially sold in Kazakhstan. This means that I will not be able to rely on warranty service, and it is not known whether its antennas will work properly with our local communication standards, since the pixel 5 is not certified for my country. Therefore, you have to buy either a Samsung or an iPhone, and this is another huge problem for the distribution of Android updates.
