Problem is, he was flat himself. What's his backstory? What is his relation to the forerunners, the guardians, or Cortana? What are his origins? I don't remember hearing one single word about any of this in the game. Why did he let the chief and blue team through to the guardian but then try to kill osiris? Why did he then proceed to try to kill the chief and blue team after he apparently let them on to the guardian back on meridian because Cortana told him too? If he stands in service to Cortana, why does he listen to her when chief is on meridian and let him get to genesis, but then refuse to listen to her and insist on fighting blue team when they are on genesis? Cortana apparently can reign him in whenever she wants as demonstrated by the cut scene where she stops him from overwhelming blue team toward the end. Why the hell didn't she do that sooner? Ugh. Too many unexplained details. Such a bad story.

kalesmart1 in Halo Reach if you try to Ninja a Sword Elite, he automatically kills you before even trying. Everytime you encountered a Sword Elite in Reach, you ran like a Bitch. In Halo 4/5, you can easily ninja any Elite you encounter, even a Grunt is dangerous than a Sword Elite in Halo 4/5 Fucking horrible games.

I hate how they made the elites look so incompetent. Spartans are mankinds greatest soldiers but they too can be killed by high level elites. Like when Nobel team fought the zealots in Reach. The squad of zealots held there own against some of the best Spartans at the time(Nobel 6 was better than most Spartans even the some of the mighty spartan 2's). Even a 6 had trouble 1v1ing a zealot. Or when Master Chief fought the Elite General in Halo legends. He ended up losing the fight because the Elite outsmarted him. Yet, in halo 5 the elites are pretty much incompetent idiots like grunts.

I agree with this statement. I was able to understand their "armor/design changes" due to them not being as "well off" in the Storm Covenant with the fall of the Original Covenant, but that doesn't mean their skill and Martial Prowess they were renowned for was to be nerfed. They were "Alien Samurai" in my eyes, very skilled and highly lethal warriors. Here, they're just bumbling hulks with no coordination and skill. I am an Elite/Sanghelios fanboy, but the downfall of them with this game is really striking me down and having me lose faith in them.

That ticked me off that I cannot game with my dad or game when my friends are over. In defense of halo 5 maybe the reason everyone is reacting so slow is because Spartans are that fast, I mean it a big part of the EU and first game Manuel that Spartans are some kind of super solider with enhanced nervous system among things and have spartan time which is bullet time made to sound spartish. A lot of halo 5 cutscenes make more sense if they are in spartan time, Cortana behavior makes more sense if one assumes the logic plague is involved. Granted it does not mention it is even bringing in this parts of EU if that is what they are even doing instead of making plot holes. Story could of been handled much better.

There’s another thing with how Tartarus works in Halo 2: Tartarus was the complete opposite of the Arbiter. While the Arbiter began to question his loyalty and handled things tactfully, Tartarus is singleminded and dealt with situations, pun not intended, brutishly. He only cared about what the Prophets order him to do, and being their “escort”. His blind loyalty is shown when he refuses to listen to anyone who tells him what the Great Journey really is, and after he is told the truth by the Arbiter and 343 Guilty Spark, Tartarus lights the ring anyway and still believes the Prophecy to be true.

10:00 alternative halo 5 storyline: blue team realizes their infantry weapons cant destroy a spaceproof window designed to delfect debris and withstand the impact. POV cuts to inside where the covenant inside hear four massive *thunk*s as blue team impacts the window at mach 1, bouncing off and breaking most of the bones in their bodies. the pelican comes back to pick them up, takes them back to infinity where they recover and miss out on the rest of the dumpster fire that is halo 5

As somebody who’s playing the Halo series for the first time, I feel depressed to know what happens when I get to 4 and 5. Cortana dying then becoming evil, the Covenant constantly being remade under different people (Jul ‘Mdama, Atriox), and the emphasis on Blue Team and Osiris when people want Chief and Marines.

Atriox is not the same as Jul, he's not even covenant, he has its own faction "the banished". He got a badass introduction and backstory in Halo wars 2. It's more like tartarus which was a great character. And 343 already said you wont have to play halo wars 2 to understand the plot or where the banished came from. If you havent played halo wars 2, i highly recommend it, it's my favorite game from this generation both in campaing and gameplay, it was 343's redemption after the mess halo 5 was.

Then halo 5 came along, the ads told us it would be like a hunt between two characters old vs new. Halo 4 had promise. Dynamics between the Chief and Cortana were new and refreshing, it was just shy of being perfect. The ending was a good indication of thing to come. My only qualms about Halo 4 was the campaign structure. I felt some parts were underwhelming, like the jungle and last two missions. It was obvious the original writer, the one before Reed, planned to bring the Didact back. A Human-Forerunner war seemed imminent. His philosophy against the Humans was what hooked me into his character. But no just kill the Didact outside the game, and replace with a resurrected Skynet Cortana.

I'm just realiszing, do you know who I think is the BEST character in Halo 5? Exuberant Witness. The Monitor of Genesis. 1. She's introduced to us in a similar way to 343 Guilty Spark 2. She has motivations that are communicated to us 3. She exhibits actual personality traits 4. For a minor character, her actions during the climax of the plot have a HUGE impact. 5. If you removed her from the story you would lose a source of humour, a guide who aids and helps Osiris complete their mission on Genesis, and if she had not opposed Cortana, she would have successfully stolen Blue Team in her cryptum and that scenario would have played out totally differently.

Johnson also played another role that they didn't mention, he connected the player to the marines and the UNSC. Having a character you understand with you who is almost the same as the faceless grunts who fight with you makes you empathise more with them. They become less like props and more like real people. He also adds stakes to the story. Chief and arbiter have plot armour because they are main player controlled characters, Johnson has no such plot armour and can be killed off, which he eventually was

The Reclaimer trilogy had so much promise with Halo 4's setup. Master Chief's deconstruction as a stoic and heroic badass into a fragile and disconnected human being. I mean seriously ONI abducted him as a kid, destroyed his personality and brainwashed him into a super-soldier killing machine. *Halo 5 retconned that in the first 2 missions of the game.* All in favour of mindless action and exposition. This was supposed to be a personal story for the Chief, and in extension for the gamers, as many have connected with him over the last decade. The Reclaimer title refers to John, as he was given the title (unofficially though) in the original trilogy. *Not Locke or Osiris.* Halo 6 can't fix this mess. The only redeeming thing I find in Halo 5 is the ending, where John and Halsey reunite, as if they were family.

in the Reach campaign during co-op, when our characters didn't show up in the cutscenes we would make up stupid stories about what they were doing. Like in the mission where you get into that building and shut the door with the covenant firing at you, we just said that our characters who didn't get in the room were just fighting back against the covenant, or escaped somehow. We didn't need flat characters with no personality to make things fun.

Seeing this actually made me appreciate Halo 4's campaign because I feel like Halo 4's had the same problem with Halo 5's in which you needed a little depth in the expanded universe before playing. Like you, I used to be a long time Halo fan but Halo 4 is what did it for me, I was off the bus. After watching this I now have a slightly deeper appreciation for Halo 4's campaign. Na, because Halo 4 was all about deconstructing the Master Chief and Cortana. Star Wars Episode 7 was all about making rehashing Star Wars Episode 4 for a new generation of fans, but left enough for the rest of the trilogy to expand and grow into its own unique path built upon the familiar. Episode 8 just took a dump on all of that and deconstructed everything just for the sake of change and pissing off all the fans. Halo 5 walked backwards on the deconstruction.

I want to add more onto Vale, she literally joins the Spartan Branch as a newbie, she had no field experience or combat experience WHAT SO EVER, and Halo 4 established that S-4's are supposed to be the best of the best, so what does that mean when Vale just suddenly shows up just because she can speak Sangheili. Jul Mdama was even built up to be this big villain that might bring back The Covenant but then is killed off like a bitch in the first few minutes of the game. As for Cortana, Frankie had clearly stated during an interview that "Cortana's fate is pretty obvious by the end of Halo 4." and yet she comes back just fine in Halo 5 (with a few screws loose) and completely shits on her character multiple times. I've followed the lore and even I was confused by Osiris as a whole, Buck was the only one I liked cause I knew him, they came out with Halo: Nightfall to explain Locke's character, but they didn't even do that in the entire movie, he was just tall, dark and brooding and apparently was tasked with assassinating The Arbiter, but NOTHING OF LOCKE IS EXPLAINED. I'm really hoping you see and comment on this, cause Halo 5 pissed off not just me, but a bunch of my friends who were loyal as I was to the series. Blue Team (something I've followed since Fall of Reach) ONLY GOT THREE MISSIONS, 3 out of the 15 missions of the game...

The Jul 'Mdama issue is so much worse than what you described. This character got developed over the course of an entire trilogy of books and in the Escalation comics as well as Spartan Ops.. Specifically, Kilo-5. He wasn't the main focus, but he was a pretty big part. It's told that he doesn't trust humanity. It's shown that his wife is killed going after him because of the Sangheili civil war that is being stoked by ONI. He's held captive by ONI and experimented on so they can learn how to eradicate the entire Sangheili species. He has all of this build up. All of this motivation that is just thrown away. Seriously. You should be irate at how Jul is killed off. I really don't have too much to say, surprisingly. Not much to add. You got right to the core issue with this one. Also, I read the secret message.

Laskey is set up to be an inside friend to chief within the UNSC who will help ground him, Del rio is set up to be a sort of minor antagonist who will be out to see chief disgraced, the librarian was set up to be a background figure who is pulling the strings, as Cortana? Her death is the motivation for chief's personal journey... Halo 5, LOLOL lets throw that all out the window and have Cortana become a comical skynet character oh and also fuck character development. Chief is going to be a bland character who didn't grow because of what he went through in halo 4

8:30 there has never been a halo game where you had 3 other clones of yourself for co-op. 3 handled it by making the others elites, which made some sense. But it really didn't have to, cause co-op is for fun.

I still hope that the Elite Locke kills is a decoy and that Jul returns in Halo 6. He COULD be a interesting character if written properly (ie. written by anyone but Brian Reed).

Another issue they didnt touch on in the Wardens background (if anything at all) was why he acted the way he acted. He didnt like blue team or Chief at all and there was no reason to hate them. Cortana held them all high in feelings so you would expect for him to know of them but not hating them.

I would have loved to see Jul 'Mdama survive up until The Fall of the Covenant mission. Afterall, this game depicts the downfall of the primary Covenant division we've been fighting since the beginning of Halo 4, the Covenant Remnant. Why not move the leader's death up to that final battle on the Elite Homeworld? Heck, have the final duel between the Arbiter and Jul. Maybe even PLAY as the Arbiter in that level; he was with Osiris throughout the entire thing anyways. Throw out that repetitive Warden Encounter and have that last fight be with Jul. That would have been badass.

I love how the whole point of this trilogy was to bring back Chief and continue his story. Although I partially and mostly agree with the fact his story was supposed to end with 3, I love Chief and want to continue seeing him. And if you're going to bring him back, don't have him make a return in one game, undo shit in the next and only players use him for 3 missions of the entire game while getting his ass kicked by a nothing character who you're suddenly passing the torch down to.
