Sweden and Finland are about to join NATO. The war in Ukraine has put an end to decades of neutrality in these two countries: especially Finland. Finland endured a Russian invasion in 1939: since then, it has maintained a neutral stance towards its eastern neighbor.
All this has changed in 2022. The entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO would be a huge blow to Russia's strategy. The Kremlin would lose all control of the Baltic Sea: its only access to the Atlantic Ocean. This means a loss of deterrent power. The question now is, what can Russia do to prevent Finland and Sweden from joining NATO? What are the obstacles to the entry of these two countries into the Alliance? In this video we tell you.

When after the war of 1939 the border between the Soviet Union and Finland was redrawn, it turned out that the new border run right across a Finnish farmer's farm. He was given a choice: to be in Finland or in the Soviet Union. I prefer to be in Finland, he said. Why, asked the Soviet representative. Because Russian winters are so harsh, replied the farmer.

It is true that Finland attacked Soviets with Germans in 1942 during Barbarossa but Soviets not conquered them in revange?

@@maasa3162 Partly true. I mean the bit that Finland was in cahoots with Germany in 1941, but there was a reason: The Winter War in 1939-1940, during which Soviet Union was friendly with Nazi Germany and attacked Finland. Actions and consequences.... And yes, Soviet Union did not conquer Finland, because in the end of the Winter War Stalin was afraid that Allied forces could come to rescue Finland and after the second phase (continuation War. as we call it) Stalin was in a hurry to be in Berlin before the Allied. In a way "saved by the bell"... Anyway, Finland had to pay huge war reparations (and it did, being the only nation who accomplished that), had to say no to Marshall aid and had to be friends with Soviet Union. Using diplomacy it did not loose the independence but had limited foreign policy space until the end of Soviet Union.

The issue with Croatia was their president voicing his opposition to Finland and Sweden joining and threatening to veto it. The reasons mostly have to do with Croatia's domestic politics. However, Croatia's president doesn't have the power to issue the veto, so he was just blowing hot air. That power lies with the Croatia's Foreign Affairs minister, who's appointed by the prime minister. The PM and the entire government have expressed their support for the expansion of NATO, so ultimately there are no real issues there.

Dear Josh, VisualPolitik is innacurate at some points, exceptionally. 1. In 1939, Communist Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were official allies (until 1941), thus the Winter War didn't start with the pretext of "denazification". At the time Commies and Nazis held even common military parades in occupied Poland, divided between the two agressors. The Soviet propaganda poster is of a later date, after Hitler and Stalin broke up in 1941. Back in 1939 they signed the Hitler-Stalin or Molotov-Ribbentrop pact which enabled to partition Poland, the Baltics, Bessarabia and Finland between the 2 regimes. The official reason of the Russian invasion against Finland was that Finland is 'too close to Leningrad'. Stalin sent an ultimatum demanding that Finland cede Ladoga Karelia and some northern territories. Finland rejected, Russia attacked. 2. Vast majority of Karelians and Finns were deported, relocated or killed during Soviet and Russian occupation. Today, in the so-called Republic of Karelia (part of the Russian Federation) you find just 5-6% Karelians, 30-40.000 thousand people at best, in remote areas, constantly declining in numbers. Those who can, relocate to Finland.

So Finland’s regime could not be changed = Russia lost. In the summer 1944 Russian Army were intercepted along the line Vyborg Bay - Ihantala - Vuosalmi - Nietjärvi - Ilomantsi. As far as I know (and I am Hungarian so I should know ) Hungary has not raised a single word about vetoing Sweden and Finland joining NATO, and I simply cannot see this happening. That is highly misleading mentioning this in the video without any basis. Poor framing. Don’t get me wrong, Orban has a not so secret love towards Putin and does unfortunately delay decision making in EU level, but nevertheless Hungary is also implementing all EU sanctions as agreed and is an active member of NATO (e.g. was fighting in US’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan). The way I see it, there is only so much that Hungary and Turkey can do. If they cause too much trouble the member nations will simply create slightly less convenient arrangements to support Finland and Sweden. Yes, Turkey has a very significant degree of leverage due to its geographic place. But it also has a rapidly imploding economy, thanks to Erdogan. It can't very well afford to neglect its own reputation and diplomatic respectability. If it becomes too stubborn it may easily come to face all kinds of small and not so small inconvenients or, at an extreme, be expelled from NATO entirely.

There isn't a measure for expulsion - and, as I understand it, that was deliberate (it'd weaken the guarantee if the alliance could respond to an Article 5 by simply expelling the nation that was attacked). The other Karelia in Russia (Republic of Karelia), which just so happens to include some of the lands Finland lost, has never been connected to a Finnish administrative entity. The area of Finland and the area of the Republic of Karelia have always historically been separated from each other by the Russo-Swedish border, the borders of the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland and later independent Finland. And the languages aren't exactly the same, although the Northern (Viena) Karelian variety spoken in the northern half of the Republic of Karelia is very close to Finnish, particularly eastern Finnish dialects, but the other forms of Karelian spoken to the south are more divergent and far less similar.

I bet that Finnish dog on a lead poster is from the continuation war rather than the winter war when the Finns were unquestionably allied to Nazi Germany so it makes sense. During the 1939 winter war mentioned in video it was the Russians themselves who were allied to Germany and pro Hitler so making inflammatory doggo posters like that would make no propaganda sense. It would go against the then party line. The portrayal of the poster here without full context is possibly more of a low resolution political manipulation than when it was originally used.

Yeah, the nuclear subs and such belong to the Northern Fleet anyway. What NATO Finland and Sweden would do is to effectively bottle the Baltic Fleet in port. Baltic states would be more defensible, and Kaliningrad more vulnerable. Quick attack to seize Gotland and Baltics would cease to be a very risky, but also high reward strategy, to Russian roulette with six bullets. This would effectively deter Russia from trying anything funny in this region, and while some day there may be détente, for now it's deterrence that will guarantee peace.

Because Finnland, a tiny country population wise, did more damage to Stalin than was ever thought possible at the time. Russia thought they could occupy Finland in a week or 2. It took months. Only reason why Finnland was beaten, was that they ran out of ammunition. Finnlands best sniper had over 500 kills to his credit before being wounded by a shell. Finns, then, and I'm sure now, learn from a young age, to hunt, tent and peg, to live with the land and off the land. Their survival skills would give any enemy a huge headache. Just like Vlad the mad is having a nightmare right now over Ukraine. Vlad may even win the war, but war boots is no good if your writ does not run. The British army found that out the hard way in Ireland.

So what mainly is talked about is the Winter War but the same thing happened in Continuation War, after the Russian offensive against Finland and pushback of Germany started. Russia had A LOT of troops in the Finnish front and Stalin knew it would take A LOT more if he wanted to invade and hold Finland. He didn't have those troops and needed them against Germany so he accepted peace with Finland. So Stalin faced twice a situation where he had to say to himself: "It will take more troops than i can spare, damn it...."

Turkey has bought air defense systems from Russia (that is why the US will not sell them F-35's, so they don't figure how to use the former against the latter). Erdogan has been consolidating power, using repressive tactics against his opposition. Victor Orban has been rather sympathetic towards Russia and China, he defines his political system as illiberal democracy, an obvious oxymoron. Birds of the same feather flock together. Turkey bought the S400 as their so-called ally denied selling them the missile system that Turkey needed. The reason that Turkey is producing their own drones is because their NATO allies refused selling them the drones they needed in their fight against the PKK. While Turkey wasn't able to buy certain weapons from their NATO allies the terrorists organization PKK/YPG got it for free. When Turkey's drones were used against the Russia backed Armenian occupiers by Azerbaijan, those NATO allies were speaking very negatively about Turkey and the drones they produced. Turkey was even sanctioned by some NATO members. Now that the drones are used by Ukraine those same allies of ours who weren't speaking highly of Turkey are praising the drones. Turkey wants the war in Ukraine to end. While some are sitting in their cozy neutral countries, people are dying in Ukraine. Turkey is providing Ukraine with drones that have shown their use against the Russians. At the same time Turkey wants to keep a diplomatic balance so that it can continue negotiating with Russia. Alienating Russia won't bring any peace. Aside from that, Turkey is fighting against Russia on all fronts. Turkey provided drones to Azerbaijan who used it against the Russia backed Armenians. Turkey is fighting against Russia in Syria. Without Turkey's intervention, the UN-recognized government would have lost against Haftar, who was supported by Russia and NATO member France. How many soldiers has your country lost in the fight against Russia? Turkey has been a member for already 70 years, it has sacrificed and contributed a lot to NATO. We will not be walked over by people who clearly do not value our lives and our national security.

A G A I N S T joining NATO : 1) Joining NATO means to become as a target for Russia´s or China´s strategic nuclear missilles all the time in future, certainly not just untill Ukraine war would end. 2) USA may back off in case of nuclear war in Europe to save hundreds of their cities- than NATO would loose nuclear war in Europe. 3) USA would appreciate every new NATO land(Finland) to absorb some of Russia´s nukes, which otherwice would probably explode above USA´s cities in case of nuclear war between USA and Russia... 4) Finland managed alone in past, could manage in future. It is still far better option than to be incinereted instead of some USA´s cities one day...USA likes to be nuclear armed nation, on the other hand they can not defend themself against Russia´s nuclear forces, let alone to defend Europe against it! Finland would better to rely on Finish defensive means and not to mess with counting on USA and kind of stand up against nuclear superpowers like Russia and China to "fight" them one day... To "fight" them means - to absorb some of nukes which would otherwise explode above USA´cities very harmlessly for Finland.... 5) Joining NATO is the way how to assure the tottal destructin to Finland during a nuclear war between USA and Russia, or even between European NATO members and Russia... 6) If anybody thinks that USA is a morally "OK" NATO leader- kind of a "good guy" , than please try to google: "USA drone strikes" . You will find horrible crimes committed by USA on civilians including children in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen an other third world countries... 7) Pro NATO propaganda sounds like this: „No NATO country has ever been invaded. “ Russia has not been invaded either. It certainly does not prove, that NATO and Russia will not destroy each other one day without any invasion. 8) In case of nuclear war the destruction would be gruesome, but also very limited geographically to states involved. Joining NATO is possibly signing of a completely unnecesarry death sentence, since it is signing of being targeted by SATTAN II and more of similar machines of death instead of some USA´s mainland, which is warmly welcomed by USA.

These are not official binding alliances, rather they are political declarations for support. US, Poland, France and Germany among others have also made similar promises. I very much appreciate it as a Finn, although they pretty much had to do it. :D We could handle the Russians ourselves should it come to that, but all promises of help definitely add to the deterrence.
