Why is this Israeli holiday so controversial?

Jerusalem Day/Yom Yerushalayim is a controversial Jewish holiday that celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967, drawing criticism and celebration in equal measure. In 1947, Jews reluctantly accepted a partition plan but soon after faced Arab attacks, turning the battle for Jerusalem into a fight for Israel's existence. East Jerusalem fell to the Jordanians, who restricted access and desecrated Jewish holy sites. In 1967, Israel emerged victorious, and 28 Iyar was declared Jerusalem Day by the government and a minor religious holiday by the Chief Rabbinate. Jerusalem Day is celebrated with parades, celebrations, and prayers, but the Flag March through Arab areas has sparked tension, highlighting ongoing challenges and the fragility of Jewish freedom in this significant city.

The biggest issue is that people don't know the long-term history of the region. I like the way you explain the long historical connection of Jerusalem to the Jewish people. I have several lectures I make for my students on my channel as well. They explain the region from the Ancient times until today. When you look at it all in that context it becomes very clear. Thank you for the summary.

Israel made the mistake of allowing Jordan to retain control over the Temple Mount. The Arabs responded with archaeological vandalism. Fortunately, it has been possible to recover some of the artifacts they shovelled up, though there has been a loss of context.

The other mistake was not removing the Jordanians, who were living in homes the Jordanian army forced Jewish owners from, when the city was reunited. eg. The entire neighborhood of Shimon Hatzadik is still full of these Arab squatters, who refuse to even pay a paltry rent to the legal owners. Every time it looks like the owners will get their property back, the squatters engage in violent riots and set fires.

In regards to what was said in the intro - according to my Rosh Yeshiva, many "ultraorthodox" Jews did recognize the event and even said Hallel due to the truly miraculous victory, but became unaffiliated with the celebration long ago as the holiday has been politically hijacked. The day is truly one of gratitude to Hashem for surviving such a terrifying war and even getting access to Jerusalem.

My only complaint with this video is that it highlights the controversy more than the celebration. Of course there is going to be some provocation just as Israel's Independence Day is also a "provocation." But the good outweighs the bad, the peaceful joy should outweigh some people's negativity. I think there is some overlap between the two depending on what ground you ask. Religiously, if it is about minhag there is sephardi vs ashkenazi. But if it is about communities, then there are ashkenazim, sepharadim and mizrachim. Ie. The baghdadim are considered mizrachi but their religious rite is sephardi. Then there are also people who come from russian/soviet blocs who consider themselves mizrachi too like the gruzinim and kavkazim.

Jesus, never met an "Palestinian" nor did he know his land, Judea/Israel, as Palestine. Neither Palestine nor Palestinians appear in all of the New Testament. The New Testament says, "Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea," (MATTHEW 2:1) and that his father, "took the young child [Jesus] and his mother, and came into the land of Israel." (MATTHEW 2:20) BTW, the New Testament is hostile to the Jewish People.

@Kainz I agree ! it is time both sides came together in mutual trust to iron out the future of the country. The Palestinians must first show good faith by abandoning means of violence to pursue a one state solution. And the Israelis in turn must stop "mowing the grass" as they famously name operations like cast lead etc. Work together and embrace the values which they have in common is the only way forward. There is too much potential in the children of both sides to throw away over mindless conflict.

I have a soft spot for the Jewish people, as a historian, I suppose. But you have to admit, the deep-seated connection to Jerusalem in Judaism is also a source of quite a lot of trouble and pain. You do have to wonder how different Jewish history might have been if the religion were not so deeply tied to this ancient land of Judea and Samaria. Christianity and Islam have always been large enough that they developed many other pilgrimage sites and could bully their way into the Holy Land from time to time. As for this holiday... Well yes, it commenorates the one time Jews "bullied their way in" to Jerusalem. But i don't know that it really should be celebrated until there's a permanent peace with the other two religions. It's a sensitive issue. And that's probably the problem. This is the one thing in the Israel/Palestine conflict that looks MUCH to much like the petty conflict in Northern Ireland.

I like how the video discusses briefly on the zero sum game. There are 2 omissions in this video. . Arabs dont feel discriminated against in east Jerusalem, they are. Data provided by the municipality shows a lack of investment and permits issues to Arab areas of east Jerusalem compared to Jews living in east Jerusalem. 2nd is why the losing Arab armies invaded in May of 1948. The main reason was Palestinian refugees flooding into there countries after being expelled by the irgun and the hangana.
@dallasgrey4247

As a Jew, I agree that there is definitely a discrimination problem in the West Bank. Funding for projects there is not given due to fears of certain things, leading to less jobs and more poverty, therefore causing class divides, leading to more discrimination on different levels. On your second point, though both forcing out movements did happen, there is still some debate on if the numbers on who were forced out vs who left are accurate. I’m not trying to say a lot of them weren’t forced out, I’m just saying it is still being tallied up how people got to where they got to.

@UNPACKED
@UNPACKED Жыл бұрын
Good question! Many ultra-Orthodox Jews don't acknowledge Jewish sovereignty over the Land of Israel because they believe Jews must wait for the Messiah to arrive before they can be sovereign again. Additionally, since the state was founded by secular Jews and the Israeli government is also secular, they reject it because they believe the Jewish state should function according to Jewish law.

Fun fact: Jerusalem was founded by Ellins, not Jews, so the indigenous argument is not valid for both sides, BUT, modern day DNA studies have shown huge numbers of Ellenic DNA on Israel. Also many modern day "Jewish" things are Ellenic, such as the symbol of Judaism which is the star of God Kronos or the Tefillin cube which again, is a symbol of God Kronos. Jewish folk lore also has some origins in Ellas, such as the story of Moses who climbed the mountain in order to receive orders from God being the story of Minoa who climbed the mountain to receive orders from Zeus, or the story of Sampson who lost his strength when he cut his hair being the story of Pterelaos who lost his strengh when he cut his golden hair, etc etc. The Hebrew language is also very similar to Ellenic and there is even a book called Hebrew are Greek by Yashua something that explains the similarities insanly well. All and all i do not see why people call Israelies invaders since they match the surrounding area (specially Ellas and Egypt), BUT, i agree that they have a very dangerous religion in need of huge reforms.

@@MrPhotonjockey yes Ellins is the original name of the Greeks, the Levant region is also were some Ellenic tribes originate but mostly we went there via Crete and Cyprus, now when it comes to judaism I don't see how a religion that says kill everyone who is not us and casually curses everyone is not dangerous.
@MrPhotonjockey
@MrPhotonjockey Жыл бұрын
@@Anastasis-is-here you will need to show me where it says “kill everyone who is not us” and curses everyone. As far as I know, most of the negative things said in Jewish texts are either misinterpreted or were meant for a very specific reason and limited time, such as when they were running from the Egyptians or were fighting a certain people. Jews are the only Abrahamic faith that doesn’t think ‘only they’ get to heaven. Christians say only Christians get to heaven and Muslims are the same about their religion. The Jews believe that only the seven laws of Noah must be followed to get to heaven and that anyone can do that. That doesn’t sound anything like “kill everyone who isn’t us” to me.

Australia is the product of Western civilization our laws and morals are that of Judo Christian belief Jesus Christ is the Son of God. By this Truth, we Christians believe the Bible is God's moral compass to the world. Revealing truth and the origin of good and evil, and the Genesis of mankind's purpose. By learning Scripture we discover Biblical Prophercies. I'm one of many Australian Christians urgently concerned about moving the Australian Embassy in Tel Avi to Jerusalem, acknowledging Jerusalem the seal of God, and the Ancient capital city of Israel. We Christians in Australia need to urge our leaders to the critical vital importance of moving Australia's Embassy from Tel Avi to Jerusalem. Why? I quote: "I'll bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you". This is a promise of God. America is the only embassy in Jerusalem. Our domestic leaders must stand firm for the Truth? Australia who will we serve...? The world: at this very moment denying the promise of the Bible. Shall our leadership act accordingly to God's blessing or curses?
