As a machinist, I appreciate the massive over-engineering of this block and all of its intricate new features. As a consumer, I'd absolutely shop further down the product stack, and I really like EK's stuff 😐 The few potential degrees gained aren't worth the price to me, nor do I flex the costs of my rigs. @@letalissonus Personally I prefer the Acetyl variants, as I don't want something that's going to blind me, when I look at it.(I get you can turn RGB off, but anyway) I specced both my GPU and mobo block are Acetyl, as whilst RGB 'can' add a nice theme to a PC (Via fans, or strips) I don't feel every. single. component should be lit up like a Christmas tree. Edit (5 seconds later): My own build (In a Corsair 900D) only has RGB strips around the inner part of the case, Nothing internally, fans/mobo/coolers/RAM, or anything else has RGB.

i would love to see a waterblock comparison from like bargain to top range just to see what temp savings you get for the extra money.. simple setup like mid range cpu, 360 rad and maybe a graphene thermal pad to try keep paste variations out of equation so only main variation is the waterblock.

Looks like you can get that exact block direct from EK for roughly $197 shipped to the US currently. Still pricey, but I think it's at the upper limit of what most people would spend. With all the manufacturing that’s involved and CNC machining I think the price is very fair. Is it worth it compared to some simplified stamped parts I don’t know, without a performance test it’s hard to say, but from simply a component manufacturing cost to selling price I don’t think they are gouging at all. So for a cost to sell price then yes it’s worth it, from a performance to price ratio, don’t know.

The best thing about Performance PCs is they have sales frequently. You can reduce the ludicrous cost of water cooling components by taking advantage of those sales. For instance, they just had a Memorial day sale and you get X% off based on how much you spend--usually ranging around 10-15% off + free shipping. Every bit helps. Glad you're back Jay. Hope all is well.
@motorcharge4025
@motorcharge4025 Жыл бұрын
The 10-15% codes are a bait and switch. You lose the free shipping when you use the codes and they charge shipping based on order amount rather than actual shipping cost. Unless you're placing a very expensive order the codes are usually a worse value than the regular free shipping is.
@MrVlodato
@MrVlodato Жыл бұрын
This type of thing happens with R&D and pricing. The problem with a company like EK doing it VS Nvidia is their products have no intellectual property hurdle. You cant reverse engineer a GPU like you can for something like a water block. Eventually other companies will just make the product for far cheaper, it just takes time to catch up. Look at keycaps for example, companies like GMK were charging a premium and no one was really in their league at all, but now other companies are now within reach or even better then GMK and are charging a fraction of the price.
@letalissonus
@letalissonus Жыл бұрын
Ironically, EK is one of those that used to be notorious for creating cheaper knock-offs, preferring always being the first to offer products and being known to have them in stock over creating actual quality products. There's sadly only very few reviews comparing water cooling blocks, but of the few I encountered EK's blocks always tend to be on the lower end - abysmal flow and bad to mediocre temperature deltas seems to be a very common thing with them. There's even been a few occasion of them stealing design ideas straight from pictures of other manufacturer's prototypes. Not to mention their preference for extremely cheap acryl glass - it might be the better choice for slapping RGB onto everything due to its transparency, but compared to e.g. acetal it's a really bad choice if you want durability. Acryl glass cracks easily and will develop micro fissures after a few years, which may at some point cause leaks. If you're like me and don't like replacing your entire PC every 3 years, using an excessive amount of acryl is a really bad idea. Just as a reference, Watercool's TR4/SP3r2 Threadripper/Epyc block is just half as expensive as that EK cooler, while being a single massive chunk of over 1kg of copper that covers the entire giant heat spreader. It performs extremely well, especially compared to EK's TR solutions, because they still put actual engineering into that block instead of just throwing more copper onto the problem - many of their products are actually follow-ups of custom designs developed for industrial customers. The difference in material cost is so huge that trying to explain these EK price increases with R&D is just pure BS, they're just money-grabbing.

Glad to see you back Jay! I've been watching your channel since nearly the beginning and greatly appreciate your honest opinions. So thank you very much for your honesty! Kind of like you, Im an old dog and I have been building computers for a good 30+ years and water cooling for the last 14 or 15 years. As for EKWB I think they are trying to be the "Apple" of the water cooling world, but at some point given how much competition they have, they may learn a hard lesson if their stuff stops selling as much as they would like. Don't get me wrong, they have some nice quality products but they are quickly approaching a point where their products are not accessible to the vast majority of builders. After my last issue with one of their products and the insane hoops they made me jump through to warranty a blatantly obvious factory defect, I have washed my hands of EKWB and will probably be a very long time if/when I buy any more of their products. Even that aside, these new blocks would be a hard no for me.

I know that because of the way you measure pressure in a hydraulic system in any form of liquid system, you consider it a pressure drop. It's actually a pressure gradient, more specifically pressure is theoretically produced by something being in the way. So on the side above the obstruction from the direction of flow you see a significant increase in pressure whereas of course on the other side you see a significant decrease in pressure. I know I'm being pedantic but it really bugs me because the design is not to reduce the pressure drop the design is to maintain laminar flow, and it's often indicated by a pressure gradient difference but not always... This technicality actually matters in so much as what their designing and how they're achieving the heat transfer

Welxome back, Jay. TBH the crazy price increases to do a custom loop is why i have an Optimus CPU block, 9 feet of ZMT hose, and a 0.93 hp chiller. Upfront us cgeaper and even with the power usage, i can buy a lot of electrons for the delta.

Completely agree, prices for most ek blocks are out of control lately, sure it’s a nice block and someone said to me it’s not the cost of the materials, it’s the design that drives the cost up but still pretty steep imho.

Welcome back, Jay. This is clearly a premium niche item. However I question the mounting on this design. That rubber gasket will "relax" over time a lot quicker than metal would, especially under a heat/cool cycle. It means you would probably have to regularly check the torque on your mounting screws. (FYI there are Torque screwdrivers to do this, that click when its tight enough without damaging, although I am unsure of any standard)

Great to see you back Jay! 😃👍 Would love to see a comparison between the Magnitude block and the Velocity2 as I thought the Velocity2 was EKs top-of-the-line block when I got it. 🤔

I have fond memories the golden age of overclocking and the early water cooling market. I've still got a box somewhere in my closet with various blocks including Danger Den and a 24v industrial water pump and its separate power supply. I used a 12v automotive relay to start the pump when my computer powered up. Nowadays the gains from custom water cooling are so small I just slap on a CLC and call it a day. I get my tinkering fix from other hobbies like 3d printing.
