What about English speaking people, do they learn another language like Korean or at least compulsory Chinese in their school? Sorry > NOT sorry for saying this but England and every other English speaking country are just spoilt and lazy. Even if Koreans need to learn a second language, it has to be Chinese instead of English.

+hana actually we learn many languages here in America like Spanish and French, German, Latin, and in some places Chinese. at least in my state people do. but yes, sadly most are lazy and most don't take the education they received and use it in their adult lives.

Never compare America and Australia with other continents. And America and Australia don't use their actual native language which is NOT English. The native language got banned and they forced them to use English instead. You should use Britain instead, the one who manipulate and forced everyone to use their language. Other countries get forced in school to learn English which I never understood. Do Britain got forced to learn other languages? Nope! Not for nothing Europeans call Britain as the lazy, spoilt kid. Why we get forced in school to learn a second language (English) and up to 3 languages? Why should we struggle and learn more in school than Britain do? And to compare Korea here, why should they learn more stuff which in not only languages (English, Japanese and Chinese), they got forced to learn Western historical and musician stuff! Why? Do Western school get forced to learn anything about Asian history and music? No wonder that Korean students have so much struggle and get tired to be student, don't forget the suicide. Also my biggest fear is that every country would lose their native language, eg. Singapore is not far from it.

The solution is: just speak! Don't think to much about it. I'm not a native english speaking person, but i travel a lot around the world and i have to speak english almost every week with people which don't understand me. But i don't care, cause i have to work with them. If everything fails, i use the "italian way" ... i speak with my hands and point at stuff, that usually works. Don't think about the mistakes, most of the information is transfered by a few words.

I started out like this as well but if you really wanna learn to speak fluently you gotta go out there and talk to people. I live in Germany and Spain and nowadays I travel a lot to the USA and work there with customers. English really comes in handy about everywhere I went haha First time I talked to people in English was when I started using myspace and back then there were only about 10000 people but that really helped me!

I'm kinda shock at how most of koreans especially their artist didn't know how to speak english like at all.. English is not my first language but we learn it in school so i can speak it, it's not fluent but at least i can construct a sentence not just throwing in some words. Like they said, it's the educational systems to be blamed. Teachers should've encourage their students to speak english in english class at the very least so they can practice it.

The difficulty of learning English depends on what country you are from. I have learned English to an understandable degree. However, Korean (which I'm learning now) just wont 'click' with me because of the ideoms and language structure. It doesn't translate well with any of the languages I have been learning previously. Therefore, when I see Korean people make English mistakes it makes sense. Why? Because they 'directly' translate from Korean to English. 'I'm asking you what are you doing these days' can in friendly/informal language be trandslated to 뭐하고 지내냐고 which when directly translated means: What-doing-and living-(I'm)asking. No pronouns are necessary which is one reason as to why many struggle. They are simply not used to this and changing patterns are the most difficult because you need to not think in your native language while speaking and using the other one. (Sorry for the essay) :)

@@samshah7628 Yes, it's an English word, but it's not an English expression. In Korea they will say "Fighting!" to mean "I'll do my best," but it's completely nonsensical in English. Unlike Korean and Japanese, you can't just omit the subject, so "Fighting!" by itself doesn't mean anything.

I can kind of understand how they feel when speaking English. That's how I feel when I'm trying to speak Korean with my extended family (because I used to speak Korean when I was little, but since I was born in America and went to school in America all my Korean started fading away) and I have a cringy accent and only understand more than I can speak. It doesn't help that my grandparents make fun of me 😂 It's nerve-wracking, because you don't wanna be made fun of and there's a lot of pressure since it's not your strongest language.

Jessica Lee I feel the exact same way but instead of Korean, it's Spanish. So when I speak Spanish to extended family, I try to speak short sentences and keep it simple. I wish I hadn't stopped speaking Spanish when I started school. Now it's really kicking my ass...

Jessica Lee I understand completely, my first language was Cantonese. But I was born in England, and my mum started taking me to English tutoring when I was two. I moved to Australia when I was 5, and with all the kids speaking English at school along with tv shows, my Cantonese started fading away. I get so embarrassed around my cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, because I should know how to speak the language. I really regret not forcing my self to keep speaking it.

Yeah, when my older brother started going to school he started talking to ME in English so I started to pick that up, and my parents picked up English really fast bc they came to America when they were in middle school, so they started using more English in the house to help my brother get better at his English. Eventually the only language in our house that was spoken was English, with my parents occasionally mixing Korean and English. And now I created a small barrier between my family members that can only speak Korean because I'm too scared and embarrassed to be made fun of for not knowing a language...that I'm supposed to know... 😂 It suckssss tho, when grandparents want a good relationship with their grandkids but their grandkids can't even speak their first language anymore.... 😂 ahsbdhbsc I'm so guilty

Don't feel embarrassed :) I know how you feel, English isn't my first language and when I was 15 I went to visit my family in the states I could understand them but barely talk and they liked making fun of my mistakes but they also helped me fix them. Seriously, my aunt laughed so hard when I switched then and than. It's hard to get over your embarrassement but it's worth it :) now I can finally have a nice conversation with my grandmother that doesn't just consist of "yeah" and "ok". Keep doing your best, your family will laugh but I'm sure they don't mean anything by it :)

I'm not Korean but I've been there a couple of times and nothing against this guy who is the English teacher but I think it's a big problem that the teacher himself can't speak Korean, how would you explain things to your student if you can't hold a conversation where both parts understand each other 100%, but maybe that's just me.

This is the point , they confronted them with someone who only speaks English to see how they can handle it . The teacher is probably not for someone who is beginner level but more for someone who actually understands english and wants to become more fluent or works on his/her pronunciation.

It's actually not as difficult as you'd think to get a point across while teaching in strictly English, at least when teaching in person. I speak some Korean (far from fluent yet) but I'd rather my students not know that I speak any. Once your students know you speak Korean (I'm referring to elementary and middle school btw) they only try to speak to you in Korean. The point of only speaking to them in English is so that they'll be forced to TRY to speak to you in English and trying is the only way they'll ever get better.

Cone to Korea and take a Korean language course for foreigners. They will never teach you in English, even in level 1. It will always be taught in Korean. That's just the best way to do it.

Idk if is only me but I learned english just by watching movies and videos, in my school they only teach us the basics of a conversation, sometimes when I heard a song I couldn't tell what they were saying but after I moved to the US and started watching YT videos I was able to understand better, my pronunciation may not be the best but I can express myself, same goes for my korean, I also started learning from watching videos and dramas, but, while I can understand is kind of difficult to form a sentence and to express myself comfortably

First of all, koreans don't speak english because they don't need to locally. In my country is a little bit different. Malaysia a British colony and many of our parents & grandparents are english educated (attend local british schools during world war 2) so the language is very familiar. Our language also uses the same alphabets as english unlike in countries like CHina, Japan and South Korea. One thing I also notice, when koreans think of english words, they seem to think of them in hangul instead of alphabets which makes their pronunciations go off the mark

Language is a tool to understand each other better as you say. Pronunciation is important, but speaking clearly is even more so. Even if I am 100% fluent in English, I don't understand some people who have it as a native language because they don't speak clearly. I've got a question though. Let's say I try to speak English with somebody from Korea, what should I say if I want to say "take it easy" meaning that I don't want them to feel rushed or stressed out? I know how to say "it's okay" at least.

Werewolf211 Try to watch alot of videos of native American people and try to pronounce it like them. Even if you don't try it will automatically be saved in your brain and you'll get better without learning it. I personally started learning english since I was 5 at home so I know the basics when i go to school but all I learnt from school was grammar and vocabulary and... That's all. I didn't learn how to pronounce it well coz my teacher weren't native Americans and they couldn't even spell some letters or mixed some of them. I finished primary school when I was 11 and my english wasn't good, after 7 years of studying, literally. So that year I just gave up but then I started eatching more english/American videos, listen more to their songs, watch their dramas and shows more and I got better eithout realizing it. I started to talk just like a native American, like I ws born there. Imo you don't even need grammar or anything since some of my relatives haven't been taught more than the alphabet and phrases like "Hello, my name is (___) and I'm (__) years old. What about you?" (with a weord accent) but they like me started doing what I did and they are now the same level I am in even tho I studied English for 7 years before I became fleunt.

I'm in Korea rn and the other day an ahjumma said hello to me, and even tho I can understand pretty well, I blanked! Then it finally processed in my brain and I said "안녕하세요!" very embarrassed.

Here's a tip in language learning that i learned by experience. When learning a new word or phrase don't keep pondering its meaning in your own language. Understand it once (in your own language), then start visual it in your head as an image or feelings (depending on the word/phrase), Associate the words with those things instead of your own language. Make these "meaning" as your center of understanding instead your language "literal meaning" if that makes any sense. Hope this helps!

shalom1948hellyeah That IS something that should be kept in mind, however I've even heard native speakers pronounce it with either a 'k' or 'g'. Same as 동생. I've heard it pronounced with a 'd' or a 't'. I think as long as there is some fluidity with the sound, and the word isn't being mispronounced altogether, it'll be fine.

I was born an English speaker, so it's already ingrained in my head. I took 4 yrs of German and can barely speak a sentence. All because of gender specifics and conjugation. That's why I have a hard time with Spanish. Mandarin Chinese is easy because it's very direct. Conjugation exists in its own way but not in a western way. Also memorizing Chinese characters works the same part of the brain that identifies numbers on sight... 7 is seven, 100 is one hundred etc. Same goes for Chinese learning.

한국인들이 영어를 못하는 가장 큰 이유는 남의식때문임 수능에서 나오는 문법이나 어휘의 비중은 적으나, 문제를 냈을때 맞춰야 하는 압박이 있음 틀렸으면 주위 친구들이랑 비교하게 되고 자신감이 떨어지게 됨 그리고 그런 자신감때문에 문법이나 어휘는 꼭 맞춰야한다라는 강박증이 생기고 외국인과 대화할때도 내가 말한 이 문장이 문법이 맞나? 이런말을 할때 이 어휘를 쓰는게 맞는건가? 라는 정신적패닉에 빠지고 어버버 하게 되는것임 우리가 일상생활에서 쉽게 주고받는 즉 비논리적인 대화를 할땐 큰 생각없이 함 예를들어 "잘 지냈어?", "ㅇㅇ" 정도 영어도 마찬가지임 그냥 큰 생각을 가지지 않고 학교에서만 배운대로 말하면 다 알아 들음 문제는 내가 영어로 말할때 주위 사람들에게 비웃음을 당하지 않을까 라는 걱정이 또 생김 결국에 한국인에겐 자존감과 자존심의 문제임

I've met many Japanese who feel like their English skills are not great but once they are comfortable with me, I become surprised with how much they know as well as some of the slang. I can't wait to go to South Korea in a few weeks. Koreans seem more open to expressing their feelings and emotions. I think it will be interesting to talk to some of them.

You don't suppose it was all those pauses, do you? For myself, I find the best way to help a Korean to understand is to speak slowly but without pauses, clearly enunciate each word, and put equal stress on each letter; each syllable. I know that the last bit is not proper English but it ties what one says with what Koreans are used to hearing. First learn the words and structure, then move to proper stress and inflection.

Hi, as an ESL teacher, I would like to make a comment about this video. First of all, all the people envolved were charming. Charlie is a great and wonderful teacher. He is just the right kind of teacher that most Koreans would like to have, especially in free talking. He is funny and charming and knows how to interact with the students. It helps to be young and good looking, young students like that. All of the Korean students were amazing and so was their leader. This is an excellent video. Good job!!!!

In Hangeul, you can't have two consonants beside eachother. That's why Koreans struggle with English. A word like "skirt" becomes "sekirete"

As an extra information, every sound you make, always have vowels to speak. Even in English, for example, "skirt" isn't appropriate writing for its pronounce. You pronouce it like "s-kir-t" but you will notice that 's' and 't' don't have any vowel beside them. You can't pronounce that without vowel. You might say "I can. That's skirt," but actually what you are doing is putting vowels that don't exist in the writing. For example, s in skirt sounds like seu(eu; a vowel having a sound somewhere between e and u) and also t sounds like teu. So, what TinmenShakezo was saying was in Hangul, they write every vowel existing in pronunciation. That's why you can't have 2 consonants beside each other. The problem is that you can't express how short the vowel is, because we don't need to express shortness of vowels in Korean and Hangul is made for writing Korean. That's why English or any other language with Korean pronunciation is awkward, because they always extend vowel part which is very short or unconscious sound in the original language. It's not an only reason, they also don't have some sound in Korean. We don't have or have but it's not exact sound that matches with a similar sound in English. For example, we don't have v sound and r sound. We don't differenciate the sound between p and f. Since Hangul is made for Korean, you can't express the sounds that don't exist in Korean. But nowdays, Korean young generation is more exposed to English, they know the sounds we don't speak in Korean, even though it's not perfect because they are used to speak Korean. Especially in English, they sometimes shorten/extend the sound of vowels and consonants. It's hard to determine which part is shortened or extended with the writing. This is the problem that all of the languages have. Writing system can't perfectly express the sound we speak. Although, writing system is perfect, we speak differently because we like easier and practical sounds in the conversation.

I am in the beginning stage of learning Korean. I think Korean is the most beautiful language in the world. I love the sounds of the language. I love learning new languages because you feel so rewarded when your work pays off. Because our language system is absolutely different with english even though there are so many same origin root language with eng such as espanol , french, germany and so on.... and actually our english education system is focused on Reading or listening test and so on for University exam and so on

There are a lot of Europeans that study Chinese, Japanese or even Korean and they manage to have a simple conversation within 5 years. It's true that Korean and English are really different, but that doesn't mean that you can't learn it in 12 years (like the people in the video)

It's amazing that they don't learn a lot within that many years. 16 years of learning English but only knowing that? I would not mind if they spoke with a strong Korean accent to me as long as I could understand them (strong German accent here .-.) but why don't they talk in English at school? I have to fight myself through English and French oral exams but they only do the solve problems thing... I hope that I can ask at least for the way to a place when I go to Korea 😂

I love this so much! And let me share my little experience in English with you. I spoke to people from Turkey, Brazil, Middle East, Indonesia a lot of times and I noticed that The Turkish and Brazilians in general are more confident than people from South eastern Asia. Their confidence helps them to communicate easier becouse there is no bad things when you want to know something interesting about other people. They want to know where are you from, your age, how do you live and so on. Remember - people really do want to know that. Just feel free. Everybody have an accent, don't worry about that. People will be tolerant to you. And it`s not big problem for native speakers if you don`t know english very well. I1m not saying about all of them but in general people are opened for communication.

I think they generally don't speak English well even after years of study because: 1. they don't use it consistently 2. they're not exposed to it via local media (TV, movies not dubbed in Korean), reading materials 3. there's no need nor expectation to speak English because everything is in Korean (as expected because they live in SK) 4. the mode of teaching English is more focused on the written/reading parts ( how to pass the next exam) rather than speaking the language which is also equally important when acquiring a language. This is just my take on this topic.

I'm learning Korean through both books/apps and through K dramas, and I think that both are very helpful. The books give me the raw material, and then I watch K dramas to learn new verbs as well as how to express myself more in a language foreign to my own. I think both ways are good when combined.

Korean and English are way different to each other. Not just Koreans can't speak English but English speakers can't reach a high level of proficiency in Korean as well. Vice versa. English speakers find it hard to learn Japanese and Chinese too. But Japanese and Chinese speakers are at best to learn Korean. It's just relativity of culture and languages. For me, English education in Korea was not that horrible nor so good. It's just English so hard to learn for Koreans.
