In this podcast, we will explain why too much of anything is a bad idea and how to live in balance according to Taoist wisdom. Lao-tzu uses three primary images to explain why less is more: the overflowing cup, the blade that is too sharp, and the room full of treasures. But this is not about the material world, but rather the three images are about the mind, essentially how our "mind cup" can overflow from thinking itself. Find out why less is more in the ninth episode of the 81 Meditations of the Tao Te Ching, a series where we explore each chapter of the Tao Te Ching. We will dissect chapter nine of the Tao Te Ching to give you ultimate clarity on the meaning of this chapter.

My little daughter who was sharpening her pencil said to me “Look mom, you mustn’t sharpen it too much. If you do, it breaks immediately and you have to sharpen it again. You have to do it carefully.” This is how the Tao teaches itself by experience. Thanks for the good work on this channel!

For me, this chapter is deceptively simple, yet its teachings have a profound impact. During my early adult years, I was consumed by a pursuit of material possessions, seeking approval from others, and battling with self-esteem issues, stress, and anxiety. My journey towards a healthier spirit has been far from swift, as I continuously work on shedding thought patterns that no longer serve me. Your analysis of this chapter offers incredibly intuitive insights that deeply resonate with me. I can draw meaningful parallels between the pitfalls you discuss and the challenges I've faced. Moreover, I appreciate how you both gently guide towards the true path of fulfillment - one that aligns with nature. Thank you, Jason & Gayoung, for sharing such invaluable wisdom.

It's easy to be swayed by our "Too Much Information" culture but so rewarding when we are able to cut through that and keep an open/empty mind. Then, indeed, we can act accordingly. (The famous "This being the case, how shall I proceed" quote). Your talk reminded me of how important it is to be genuine. Thank you Jason and Gayoung.

Really enjoying your interpretations of the Tao Jason. This brought to mind how extremism has taken over my country not only in politics but every aspect of life. Moderation has become a thing of the past. To have moderate thinking is considered weak kneed, and ditatched...Sad. However, every little bit helps and your making a strong contribution. I contribute by staying centered. This foolishness is often brought to an end by serious wake up calls. If a country thinks in extremes it's an invitation to attract extreme things happening. As always thanks Brother to you and MeYoung.

Well said brother. Thank you for your appreciation. And don't forget, that by staying centered in your own life and not contributing to the drama/noise you are creating incomparable values for the future. Future generations need to know the natural path of moderation and you are leading the way for them brother.

TLDR: Embracing the principles of Taoism, such as simplicity, humility, and avoiding excess, leads to true freedom and wisdom. 1. 00:00 🌱 Embracing the concept of less is more in Taoism leads to true freedom by avoiding excess, overthinking, and preconceived notions, allowing for flexibility and wisdom to flourish. 1.1 The ninth chapter of the Tao discusses the concept of less is more, emphasizing the importance of moderation and avoiding excess in order to achieve true freedom. 1.2 Overthinking leads to madness, but finding the right balance allows us to benefit from our thoughts. 1.3 Overthinking and over analyzing lead to troubles, embracing emptiness and keeping an empty mind allows for flexibility and adaptation to any situation. 1.4 Having too many preconceived notions about ourselves and the world blocks our perception and leaves no room for new knowledge. 1.5 Young people today think they know everything because of easy access to information, but true wisdom comes with experience and age. 2. 06:01 🌱 Embrace the wisdom of Taoism by avoiding accumulation of knowledge, staying humble, and knowing when to stop to prevent a split mind. 2.1 Receive and apply knowledge wisely, without accumulating too much, in order to prevent overflow and stagnation. 2.2 Outdated knowledge can lead to arrogance and disrespect for others, as Taoism emphasizes the importance of humility and avoiding overflowing one's cup of knowledge. 2.3 Arrogant people think they know best, but Taoism teaches that less is more and stopping short is better than overdoing it. 2.4 Having too much knowledge and overthinking can lead to a split mind, so it's important to know when to stop and remain open to new ideas. 3. 10:40 🌱 Taoist wisdom emphasizes the dangers of information overload and the importance of maintaining innocence and humility in a changing world, as seen in the contrast between Western and South Indian attitudes. 3.1 Overflowing and incorrect information on social media platforms creates a bigger problem, as emphasized by the Taoist wisdom of "over sharpen the blade and the edge will soon blunt." 3.2 Being overly clever and showing off can lead to arrogance and judgmental behavior, causing harm to oneself and others, and losing innocence at a young age, ultimately resulting in a blunt mind that cannot adapt to the changing world. 3.3 Westerners are overwhelmed by the innocence and humility of people in rural India and Nepal, and Eastern spirituality encourages maintaining a childlike mind to remain innocent and flexible in a changing world. 3.4 People in South India have a loving embrace of the world, accept life as it is, have no grand plans or expectations, and are content with their lives without the need for material possessions. 3.5 Conversations in the West are often filled with opinions and preconceived notions, while in South India, people live a more grounded and innocent life without the bs. 4. 17:18 🌱 Excess in any aspect of life leads to problems, while following the way of nature and the Tao leads to true freedom and immortality. 4.1 Excess in any aspect of life can lead to problems, whether it's in our thoughts, physical activities, or work, causing burnout and injury. 4.2 Constantly filling yourself with temporary illusions and reinforcing your sense of self will lead to a life that never lasts, while emulating the way of nature and the Tao will lead to true immortality. 4.3 Having preconceived notions and being opinionated will not last, while being empty and free of problems is the key to true freedom according to Taoism. 4.4 Having too much possessions and wealth can possess and imprison your mind, causing suffering, and goes against the path of moderation advocated by Taoism. 5. 22:09 🌱 Excess leads to vulnerability and loss of control, so live with moderation, avoid hoarding, and be mindful of how possessiveness can imprison the mind. 5.1 Excess is dangerous and vulnerability comes with having too much of anything. 5.2 The pursuit of possessions to fulfill desires is an illusion that leads to vulnerability and constant chasing, ultimately resulting in loss of control. 5.3 Utilize money for its intended purpose, avoid hoarding, and be mindful of how possessiveness can imprison the mind. 5.4 Living a life of moderation and building up a reserve for the future is the key to true freedom, avoiding the extremes of hoarding and living paycheck to paycheck. 5.5 People often strive to build wealth and pass it on to the next generation, but many are not thoughtful with their money and end up squandering it. 6. 27:11 🌱 Excessive materialism and arrogance can lead to disaster, Taoism criticizes socialization projects and warns against arrogance stemming from pious attitudes and virtue signaling. 6.1 Excessive materialism and fame can lead to arrogance and disaster, as wealth and position make one a target and put oneself in a dangerous position. 6.2 Chasing achievements can blind us to reality, and Taoism criticizes Confucius' emphasis on titles and roles molding personality. 6.3 Socialization projects create disingenuous individuals, and Laozi warns against the dangers of wealth and position leading to arrogance and disaster. 6.4 Arrogance and a lack of humility can hinder one's ability to truly learn and grow in spiritual practices, as people in the west often feel they know better than ancient traditions. 6.5 People often appropriate spiritual traditions to suit themselves, but it's important to accept and learn from the tradition as it is, rather than trying to adapt it to your own persona for ultimate contentment. 6.6 Arrogance can stem from a pious attitude, virtue signaling, and the belief that one knows the path for others, leading to putting others down and showcasing one's own virtues. 7. 35:34 🌱 Seeking validation and wealth through external measures is futile and reflects insecurity, while true freedom lies in simplicity and authenticity. 7.1 The majority of people don't resonate with the forced and fake piety pushed by media organizations, as it goes against common sense and our natural instincts. 7.2 Virtue signaling and seeking high status can lead to arrogance and disaster in the long run, as the true danger lies in those with no agenda. 7.3 Claiming wealth and titles is a sign of psychological weakness and insecurity, as seeking validation through social media metrics is futile and not a true reflection of self-worth. 8. 39:05 🌿 Following our natural flow and acting without attachment leads to true freedom and accomplishments, while letting go of societal expectations and seeking praise. 8.1 Achievement and fame should be byproducts of following the natural flow of life, rather than pursued intentionally, in order to avoid psychological damage and arrogance. 8.2 Following your own nature and acting without attachment to the work will lead to accomplishments and rewards, similar to how water moves without hesitation and flows where it needs to go. 8.3 Doing things without seeking praise or accolades, and simply following our nature and duty, is the key to true freedom according to Taoism. 8.4 To achieve true freedom, we must align ourselves with the natural way of the universe and dissolve our artificial ideologies and socialized identities. 8.5 Society's expectations and socialization lead us to seek fame and wealth, but Taoism teaches us to follow our inner nature, trust in the natural order, and let go of the need for praise and accomplishment. 8.6 Nature is the ultimate source, and we need to align with the course of nature, trust ourselves, and empty our minds to find true freedom and contentment.

Guys, talks come at very best time. When have internet time in this home place, try to fill brain with much info in a short time, so not so damn ignorant. When too much info brain fries and jump quickly all over for education. 😆so rather not try to fill brain W info or floods and get aheadache 👹. Better do not overfill, will always be ignorant in some things. So just enough info for small sips. Brain is nature so go with Tao and get just enough info and not overflow w too much. Mountain teaches in a bumpy way…if climbing and overthink, miss a loose or very smooth rock and fall can break a leg. Climb slowly , because no competition, no strong dude and become mountain away from over thinking and mountain protects because that’s nature who is me. Yes this was a very good time to get this message from you. Love from Bernardo

So does Taoism believe in a God?
@JasonGregoryAuthor
@JasonGregoryAuthor 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you mean by God. If you mean the monarchical version of a God ruling above, then no. The Tao loves and nourishes all but does not lord it over them. It is the way of nature, the ultimate reality, the substratum of existence that is immanent within all life and also transcends it. It is the same as Brahman in Vedanta. So both the Tao and Brahman are essentially beyond the concept of God and also belief itself. It obviously is far more complex than that and I need to explain a lot more, but I would recommend watching a few videos I have on that, such as "Why God is No King" and "Why We shouldn't use the word God." They will give you more.
