But with a substantial wad of cash burning a hole in the Magpies' back pocket, and Eddie Howe clearly identifying a centre-back as their priority position, why is the Crystal Palace man seemingly the only player they want?

Magnificent presentation, thank you. A lot of the complexities of life itself are represented right there on a subbuteo pitch - amazing. Newcastle supporters are generally fed up with this saga with Guehi, as 'we' always think we only deserve the best and right now. You've gone a long way to explaining to me why Newcastle are hanging on. Please explain why Crystal Palace are hanging on to the bitter end as well as I thought the asking amount had been offered. Glasner has just confirmed that Guehi is staying. As a Palace fan I'm thrilled, Marc is an oustanding player and an even better character. He's important to the squad. But I also have some empathy for Newcastle fans given the drumbeat of "edging closer" news and other needless drama. (Including some from our Chairman, let's be fair here.) That said, I think the board was smart to set a high ceiling and then raise it when we got to the final week of the window. Marc's leaving this week would have been massively disruptive. I can see why Mitchell tried to lowball for as long as he did but after the Olise sale Palace were never going to take anything less than full value. Hope it's otherwise a more promising final day for the Geordies. Transfer drama stinks; I've seen it too often.

Guehi is younger than Schär, but I've seen precious little to suggest that he's an upgrade worth 70m. I hope Newcastle signs someone else for half the price and gives the middle finger to Parish. Then go get Ferran Torres, too.

The height thing is an issue, and technically he’s 182 which is 5”11 not quite 6”. Once botman is back it’s not so much of an issue but it is going to mean short term burn will need to stay in the team.

Great analysis , as ever , but having watched him for three seasons now i feel his greatest strength is his close quarters tackling/challenging in tight spaces - how many times these days do you see a defender lash at the ball and kick an opponent instead , thereby [ unluckily admittedly ] giving away a soft penalty. Guehi's quick 'eye-to-feet' [ is that a phrase 🙂? ] has got us out of jail many times. Oh , and Andersen is a way better long range passer ...but, funereally slow on the pivot & run which is a shame as , otherwise, you'd definitely be looking at a £70m CB.

£70M is a lot of money. Too much for a player that's worth around £55M in a fair market, but Palace are playing hardball, fair play to them. I'm starting to doubt it'll happen to be honest. I think if we spread that cash and got a RW and a RCB we'd be better off. If, and that looks like a big IF, we get him I'll be happy, he is a solid player. I feel we're getting our pants pulled down on this one though.
