I strongly agree with you over Josh’s opinion. But I have to add I like to do research on what the designers used to make the game. For example, NES and SNES at Nintendo headquarters they were using Sony PVMs (2030, 2530 and 3230 line) that’s what I prefer to play on. I like seeing exactly what the designers used and what their eyes and minds intended them to look like. But I can appreciate RF terrible crt’s for a childhood nostalgic experience.

A Link to the past is peak top down Zelda. It's straight up magical and 100% stands the test of time. My only critique is that I wish it were a little more difficult, but it's still an easy 10/10. Experiencing it at my best buddies house in 92 was unreal, and made my Sega Genesis look 3rd fiddle. ;) Meanwhile, Ocarina was quite the stunner back in the later 90's, and it boasted one heck of a soundtrack(Deku Tree theme comes to mind). But the gloomy depressing dark green & brown environments, clunky controls, less intuitive 3D combat, and slower gameplay mechanics never hooked me. But at least there's no time limit like in Majora's Mask. The 3DS version is definitely a lot easier on the eyes and Nintendo made the environments a lot more colourful and less depressing this time around AND it's in stereoscopic 3D. But playing it on a tiny screen just doesn't do the game justice. That's the big trade off, and it's still extremely dated and clunky when sided next to something like BOTW.

Talk about over rated Zelda, its gotta be Wind Waker. Sorry, but any game where I can just look at my phone for several mins as my boat takes me where I need to go, isn't super compelling. Everything in between the ocean stuff is great, but people complain about the empty pointless hyrule field in OOT but the ocean in Wind Waker is much worse.

Ocarina of time... for me I played it at the time not knowing all the hype about it being the greatest game of all time (I somehow missed those issues of Nintendo Power/EGM etc)... if I had known how highly regarded it was, I may have persevered with it... as it was, my experience with the N64 was "this is a massive mixed bag, they're still trying to figure it out, there's some hits and some misses." So you had the absolute masterpiece that was Mario 64, and then you had Castlevania 64... when I played Ocarina of Time, I thought "okay this is on the Castlevania end of the spectrum" and I just never got that far in to it before abandoning it (much like Castlevania 64). Looking back, I wish I had persevered with OOT but I still think it is overrated. It frustrates me to no end that there is a generation of kids for whom OOT was their first Zelda and they are absolutely maniacally fixated on it being the template for what a 3D Zelda game is forever and ever ("BOTW is not a real Zelda! Give me the OOT template again despite no one actually wanting that as indicated by the middling reviews and sales [citation needed] of pre-BOTW 3D Zelda games and the huge success of BOTW/TOTK!"). Sorry, I usually keep this bottled and hearing Finn and Josh's thoughts has empowered me to find my voice lol.

OOT no matter how you see it either objectively or subjectively is going to be at the top. objectively the numbers are just there and subjectively well we all know what the general opinon is.

It's just too bad that CRT's will never look as good as they once did out of the box. With age, they loose brightness, black levels get lighter, colours can lose saturation and whatever else. I'd say the best thing to do would be to find a 27 - 32" Sony WEGA Trinitron CRT(2005) with low hours off market place, whenever they pop up. Aside from these sets being almost 15 years old, people that owned many of them quickly made the transition over to those terrible LCD's and first wave plasma's at the time, so I'm sure plenty of the WEGA's weren't as abused anywhere near as much in the hour department compared to the CRT's that released throughout the 90's. I just hate the big boxy silver bezel aesthetic...There's nothing 90's about it. :P Oh, and another great option which has it's own benefits, although it can't match the blur-free motion clarity of CRT nor is it latency free, would be to buy a smaller QD-OLED(Samsung S90C) and pairing it with a RetroTINK4K, which has a wealth of options to tinker with that can easily emulate the look of a CRT. Those two things combined is the ultimate CRT alternative, but it's a much more expensive route to take as the TINK4K retails for a grand CAD, and then a QD-OLED will run you another $1500+. Strictly in terms of picture quality, you'll gain perfect blacks, high brightness, whiter whites & progressive scan, but CRT will reign supreme-O with perfect motion clarity and zero input lag, and won't obliterate the wallet by means. :D I'd personally would rather just roll with a Brand new fresh out of the box black bezeled' 27-32" Sony Trinitron CRT from the late 90's, but that option just doesn't exist anymore. They've all aged. What a bummer. lol
@MortsGarage
@MortsGarage 4 ай бұрын
The amount of options is interesting to me, but I really wonder what kinds of solutions people will come up with in the future
@NeonPizza80s
@NeonPizza80s 4 ай бұрын
@@MortsGarage Oh for sure. I think, a 42" QD'-OLED paired with a TINK4K is the best CRT alternative, when using it's 60hz black frame insertion to cut down 50% of motion blur. In the end, you're still gonna have 50% more motion blur than a CRT which is blur free, and a total of around 15ms of latency, while CRT has zero lag. :P So there's no perfect solution just yet, but things are definitely improving no doubt.

Sonic is definitely a case where people have dealt with the janky cameras and new player traps. Because that was one of the few games we had, and would play the first couple stages so much it was second nature. Emerald Hill zone is a sacred happy place. I prefer it to Mario because the levels are more ambitious, and its more themed around machines. Ocarina of time was a Mind-blowing game. It does not have the quality of life features we expect today, but basically people put up with games having issues, and just enjoyed having an action Rpg on the n64. Most Zelda games tend to be a lot like Disneyland when you think about it in there are separate themed lands to visit with a castle in the center. Ocarina just had a specific order to the adventure despite looking open world.
