There are certainly some down sides. But one could make an argument that marketing and branding has done more to protect consumers than every government regulation ever created. A traveling salesman 150 years ago would have an easier time ripping you off than a franchise that has 1,000 of easily identifiable locations across the country. McDonald's has a brand to protect, so that is why they are willing to invest money to make sure the amount of rat feces in their food is kept to an acceptable level. As early as Adam Smith people have commented on how consummerism has raised living standards, but I'm not sure how much longer that can last. I think some people are starting to tap out on consummerism and looking for more simplified lives.

Eternal life in heaven is a free gift from God. No human being deserves it due to his/her good works. We have all sinned and fall short in glory of God(eg.Jesus says if any man looks at woman with lust he has committed adulterly with her in his heart..No man is that pure😅). So how did God give us this free gift🤔? He sent his only begotten son to be betrayed, humiliated ,beaten and die as fine/payment for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day. Since he is a just God and has to punish sin. All you have to do is humbly repent of all your sins(read the 10 commandments) honestly turn away from them. Believe in/trust that Jesus did that for you. Confess with your mouth that he is your lord and saviour..You will be saved from hell🔥. The holyspirit(his omnipresent spirit) will in dwell within you and convert your cold heart of stone into that of flesh that can truly love God and be a slave of righteousness and not of sin. This might be the last time you read the true gospel of salvation..look around 🔥🔥 the end is nigh. Please don't reject God's gift. Your soul is on the line.Jesus loves you❤

@Terror Shark when did i speak about capitalism lmao. its not about going to church. He is real . He came to the world after we sinned away from The father. To reunite our relationship with God(our sins keeps us away from him since He is a holly God). "For God loved the world that he sent his begotten son who ever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life". Jesus was sinless in his life on earth when he died and rose on the third he paid the price for the sins of the world. If you repent and believe that he did that for you. And confess he is your lord and saviour. he impudes his righteousness to you. So when God sees you he doesn't see ur sins cause they are covered by the blood of christ. This is a gift from God . Jesus is called son of man and Son of God. He is man and God. So that you can relate with God. U become a church when the holy spirit (His omnipresent spirit)is in dwelled within you that will convert your heart of stone to that of flesh that would make you a slave of righteousness and fully love God and neighbor and grant you eternal life in heaven. Their is no other religion that has that and after all Jesus didn't come to start a religion but a relationship. Men made religions...Jesus loves you❤️. And he is coming sooooon. The end is nigh🔥🔥

Advertising was around even in ancient times. Before television and radio, we had town criers or public newsreaders promoting businesses that paid for their endorsements as part of their daily news announcements. In Rome, before they got down to duels or matches in the coliseum, gladiators would shout the names of the businesses that sponsor them (because even back then sponsoring sports teams existed).

Thus it was not protected by the 1st amendment and governments could regulate it. Not that it matters now though. Advertisers fuel borderline violent social movements that lead to hard core civil strife and nobody's doing anything about it

All these "new" things that we as a people are starting to realize about our society and reality aren't actually new, but different forms of old ways that have been part of us since the beginning. And no, it isn't going to die down - it's actually accelerating. We're noticing it all so strongly now because of how much more prolific they've become. As dismal as this may seem - there continue to be channels / creators like those at Wisecrack who are willing to explore perspectives which go against the grain, investigate / search / help foster discernment, be integris, honest and straight up just call attention to the grand stage that society sits upon.

One day you are going to face your creator on judment day.On the great white throne room.Your book will be open every lie, everytime you said his name in vain (Jesus , God) every lustful look at a woman/man you have not married etc will be written but before being tossed eternally in hell He is going to ask you what did you do with my son..You see God's laws are impossible to follow on our own will..but Jesus Christ was betrayed, beaten and finally he was killed (sacrificed by God) to pay for your sins like a fine instead of jail time . If you humble yourself for once pray repent of all your sins and trust believe Jesus did that for you. You will be saved from being tossed in hell on that day instead the holy spirit will come into you..change your heart of stone into that of flesh❤ that would mystically love righteousness and fully love God and have eternal life in heaven...this might be the last time you read the gospel..Jesus is coming back sooon not as the sacrificed lamb of God🐑 like the last time..but as Judge of the whole world..The King of kings🤴 with fire in his eyes🔥🔥. Think about that day..What did you do with his son? Jesus loves you❤

"prior to the invention of the printing press, _when most people were illiterate_ ..." *sigh*, just because they didn't read and write Latin doesn't make them illiterate. I don't read and write Latin, and I consider myself reasonably well read, at least in my chosen area of interest. (There are fragmentary notes of ordinary peasants writing down ordinary peasant things. Scraps are rare because when you're looking for things to throw on the fire in a cold winter, that grocery list from 3 years ago doesn't look very valuable except as a way of adding a bit more fuel to the fire. Folks who collected information didn't bother to collect peasant documents because they're peasants, what do they know that's worth preserving? We get all the fancy records in Latin from the educated superelite that was the feudal nobility, but nobody bothered to keep things peasants wrote down so we just have the handful of scraps that managed to land in places where they got preserved anyway.)

Honestly I am mostly okay with the omnipresence of advertising so long as there are regulations that prevent ads from directly lying about about the product or the fact that its an ad. The world we live in is full of products and I believe it is more important to insure the ads are accurate and honest than to try and prevent them.

You have been killing it. I work in advertising and that last part on where things are today, its true. I think increasingly advertisers are trying to act as referees to culture, in that they want to not just sell us a product but an identity now, and even weirder, it feels like you have to buy certain identities or be punished by Ad Based Ostracism. I think this video hints at how awful it feels that ads are our best friends and influencers now. I just wishes you all spent more time on modern advertising and speculation on future advertising, and then, since you all have a philosophy background, the ethics of embedded influence. Your work is great and keep it up.

I'm a copywriter who works in advertising and has worked at advertising agencies. I love this video. Some other notable examples of how advertising has shaped popular culture, social norms, and America: You need to eat breakfast. -> Comes primarily from Kelloggs ad campaigns in the 30s and has been proliferated by cereal commercials ever since. Remember those cereal commercials from the 90s "part of a complete breakfast" and they show a gigantic bowl of cereal, a plate of 4 toast slices slathered in butter, a glass of orange juice and a glass of milk? An apple a day keeps the doctor away. -> Comes from farmers and apple selling company ad campaigns. Hondas are the most reliable cars. -> Often repeated by boomers and your parents, it comes from ad campaigns in the 70s. Honda haven't been in the top 5 of most reliable cars for over 20 years. Volvos are the safest cars. -> Comes from ad campaigns in the 70s. You need to buy a diamond to show your love and marry someone. -> Comes from ad campaigns in the 30s and 40s from the De Beers company, who also in an evil fashion restrict the amount of diamonds there are in the market to artificially inflate their value. Harley's are badass. -> Comes from ad campaigns in the 50's and 60's. Nowadays we laugh at dentist boomers who dress up in leather and drive loud annoying motorcycles, but they saw their ads when they were a kid and that became the image of coolness in their head. Buying a house is the "American Dream." -> Comes from ad campaigns from banks for mortgages and it's sadly deeply ingrained in American culture. And there's plenty more, those are just off the top of my head. These commercials were repeated so often on TV that they had a brainwashing effect on our grandparents, who repeated this stuff to our parents, and they in turn repeated this junk to us. They believe in it more than they believe in breathing and you can't get it out of them, and these ideas all come from advertisements. I'm really glad you brought up Red Bull. I often use them as an example of how to do modern branding right. They're making cool content for people to enjoy. Their showcasing awesome athletes doing awesome stuff. And the end result is awesome stuff to watch. That's how you really build and maintain a brand. Make awesome stuff for people. That makes people want to align themselves with your brand and you have a customer for life because they want your product to be part of their identity.

I work in advertising. The theory is If you see a nice, high budget ad with a celebrity endorsement (Like RedBull)... you assume this company has money, which means they have sales, which means people must like their products. So in your mind, you think they are trustworthy to buy from.

They’ll likely never reveal this, but I think it would be interesting to see if some ads actually got results. I’ve seen probably a hundred ads each for Noom and Dr Squanch soap in the past few months and not once have I ever been inclined to look into their products (side note, I’m in decent shape and I swear by YesTo soap so that could just be me). Does over saturation of ad viewing make a potential consumer less inclined to buy your product? Or is there something to be said about constantly getting seen by a potential consumer?

One thing about it is that if you ever are in a situation where you want to buy a product or service, whatever brand has etched itself into your memory, will naturally be where you look to buy that thing. Although that being said, if I'm ever in a supermarket for say toothpaste I will usually compare the price and buy the cheapest brand rather than automatically go for the Colgate brand.

Either you consume content free of charge and the content creator makes money from ads (e.g. Wisecrack), or you pay a subscription to avoid them (e.g. Netflix). The main reason why ads are so prevalent Internet is because people feel that Internet content should be free.

i don't know when "before" was because they were still trying to convince people that cigarettes were good for your health when my grandmother was young.

@@thomascheckie2394 hes probably moreso thinking about the 80s toy add that has loud music and basically just goes over what the toy does with a kid playing in the background. You're thinking of the 50s "your doctor smokes it too!", which is the emotional appeal hes talking about.

Getting information from an ad sounds suicidal.

I am seriously impressed, I remember some troll in your comments challenging you guys to make a video about ads. I don’t know if you saw the comment or not but you clearly showed that you were more than capable of doing so

I just want good advertising, like the Coke commercial with the elephant swimming in the water and stealing the Coke with it's trunk, or the Levi's commercial with the 2 teens who talk and jump of the pier.
