Patrick Cantlay has an amazingly good and simple golf swing that we can all learn from. He is the master of producing speed and control and I am going to show you how he does it in this video.

Glad you posted this. A body type release, in the past, has gotten bad press in golf instruction. But not so today. Cantlay, Victor Hovland, Fleetwood etc all square the club with the body's rotation then release. I have given up on trying to time the release with posting up on the lead leg and letting the hands release at the ball. Way too much timing. As you said, squaring the club with body rotation with the arms and body synched up produces a very powerful and straight ball. I am not going back. I appreciate that you acknowledge there is another very efficient way to square and release the club.

Clubface stability is becoming more of a real thing these days! I'm going to be moving you through the hybrid release pattern for sure. We have way better data now than we did 5-10-15 years ago. It's blowing holes in a lot of the stuff we've always leaned on to be true and mark my words, the new trend in golf instruction for the upcoming year(s) is going to be "release patterns" not shallow swing planes, lag, lead wrist Bowing (flexion), center pivot blah blah blah.

Pretty solid move to say the least!

It looks like he's using his Iron shot as he's going into his compression and letting the driver hit the ball before releasing the head. Alla! Pete Cowhen and Danny Maude on his KZbin channel. Which I am trying to do with my swing at the ripe old age of 64. Pete is 72. It launches the ball in a easy way with practice. And like Pete says compression like into a force 9 gale wind. Great Video! Thanks!

*Experience the incredible release pattern that comes with a taller square address. You'll love how effortlessly it feels as if it's the most natural thing in the world. But here's the best part: throughout the entire swing, my thumbs will always be facing you no manipulation of the grip, providing a sense of control speed and flush marshmallow power.*

Absolutely the first thing to say about Cantlay's golf swing is " Do not copy his left foot action through impact". It will cause lower back problems and could take you out of golf and worse.(to operating table as it has with Cantlay , Zalatoris and countless others, due to ignorant golf swing instruction and physio trainers who also dont know. Do release the left big toe.. better yet invert the left foot through impact. eg Jack N. Scotty S. Anyone with knowledge of the connection between lower back and the foot, will know this and pass it on to golfers.

I dislike A LOT of the message that golf instructors/physio trainers pass along these days BUT that doesn't mean I am going to take the knowledge I have to a soap box and start pointing a finger calling anyone ignorant. I understand the importance of the foot to back (and knee really) as I stated in my previous message. In fact, I said that I have many videos on this topic on the website and channel. Just so we're both clear on this. Next video.... Hey guys and gals, don't swing like this as impending doom is lurking...swing it like Jack and Scottie and maybe I'll see you in hip surgery, maybe I won't.

Great analysis! For me his magic move is how stable and quiet his lower half is through impact - his pelvis is basically in the same position from P6-P8. Right foot planted until ball is gone. Guessing that’s why he hits so many fairways.

Like Zalatoris, if Cantlay continues to swing as in this video with left toe , hawked into the ground he will take himself out of competitive golf. Watch and see.... then deny. Wash and repeat. That is the state of golf instruction...cheers Alicia

When I do analysis, it's to highlight the areas of the swing that others can learn from. I have plenty of videos on the channel and the website that discuss where and how the weight should land in the lead food to keep the spine, hip and knee safe during the swing. I don't like his lead food action nor wood I teach it to any of my students. Not sure where we got off the rails with the point of the video? My question to you is...if we looked at this golf swing in 2D format and not knowing it was Patrick and not knowing his past issues...are there attributes that YOU would find worthy enough to point out to a student base that was interested in learning better ways to swing the club? Or would you just keep pointing the mouse down at his big toe and say "watch and see"? If he sustains another injury, which it sounds like your 100% confident that he will, then what would I be denying? He creates clubhead speed efficiently and most of his movement is sound, aside from the area in the lead foot. Wouldn't it be MORE HELPFUL to the golf instruction world for us to then talk about what "could" have lead to the injury, rather than just making video after video on EVERY tour pro man/woman out there, discussing all the unsafe movements that exist? Predicting the future certainly has more upside for you on this one. Cheers to you Alicia and thanks for taking the time to comment on my video.

That's the most balanced impact position I've ever seen. Sometimes I feel like that, like I am not using much ground forces but the lag gives me effortless power and consistent strike.

No wonder Cantlay took himself out of golf due to fractured spine. Zalatoris and Cantlay keep the left big toe down at impact. This is absolutely going to cause lower back issues and take a golfer out of the game and worse. Golf instructors and trainers who admire Cantlay's swing dont have a clue.

Patrick fractured his spine many moons ago and was forced to look deeply into the issue and work on a swing shape that can hold up over time. It’s pretty safe to say that had he made the adjustment to the separation issue that was more or less considered “freakish” from the measured tour pros in TPI’s database. The nature of your comment is exactly what’s wrong with this golf instruction world. Everyone “knows” better than the next and why not make a Jab at a golf instructor by telling them they are clueless. When I did this particular analysis, it was on a grouping of swings collected after he made his change and I did it as a lesson for people to understand how we don’t need to create tons of secondary tilt in the hitting area. Thanks for your comments!
