The fact that porn is available to anyone with an internet connection (to children!) is an absolute outrage and scandal. I discovered porn at 12 years old when my brain was still developing. I wish more people knew about this, you spoke extremely eloquently on the matter! There are a couple of approaches I that found extremely useful: 1. Recognizing the root problem. 2. Reading books - or every other action that requires long-term concentration. 3. Stopping the habit loop when recognizing triggers and replacing the habitual action with other actions that introduce similar rewards: going for a run, socializing, eating something. 4. Finding a new hobby, like learning a new language. 5. Avoiding social media, or at least manage its exposure and utilize it for your benefit. 6. Reminding yourself of the negative consequences of it and the reasons for quitting 7. Practicing mindfulness 8. Stop putting it on a pedestal - this is the lowest form of content possible, the "junk food" of the brain, you might even say.

I want to encourage everyone struggling out there that If I could've won this battle, then anyone can. I've started watching regularly around 16 and sunk incredibly low by age 25 where I was doing it for many hours on end. This then escaleted even more when I was trying to quit I was regularly doing atrocious relapses with 8/10/14+ hours of edging. But with the help of this angel and God I managed to fight back from that deep hole. After the last bad relapse I just gave an oath to my mother, father and God that this will be the last time I do this to myself... In my estimation it then took me 6 months of heavy abstinence symptoms almost daily. It was literally hell for me but I survived it. I had a lot of trauma and ongoing family issues, so perhaps not everyone is like that and could be better off. I just wish dr. Leigh was here a couple of years earlier when I was completely unaware of what I was doing to myself while blisfully edging almost daily.

Thank you for this explanation! It helped a lot! I discovered something else that causes porn addiction, since I know this I don’t want to do porn anymore, even when I’m emotional or stressed out and feel the urges. You are right that you changed your baseline by watching porn and it causes indeed problems with real sexual relationships. And I think most guys turn to porn and masturbation because they are afraid or know how unwanted rejection feels. Most men don’t know how to deal with that. Because guys want to form a relationship with what they think is a beautiful, sweet and intelligent woman (and this girl doesn’t have to be real either! It could be a fantasy or a woman that you don’t know but see every day), but if they get rejected it’s most of the time the woman that does this to him and its “only” because of her feelings. Her feelings are illogical and men don’t know how to deal with that. Because her feelings are illogical, often she can’t explain why she rejects him. It triggers in the guys mind al kinds of emotion like sadness, frustration, anger and stress because they make the mistake by wanting to solve it or thinking they are not good enough. But you can’t solve somebody’s opinion and feelings and her opinion of you doesn’t say anything, trust me I know😊 But the only way and rule for us men is: accept her feelings, respect her thoughts, wish her the best (and you must mean it), let go and move on. Then do introspection (read: journaling, and all activities except for porn and masturbation and chasing her or another woman) and get back to form real relationships in real life!(When you are very young, you don’t have problems with making friends because you don’t have a lot of complex thoughts. It’s the quality and complexity of your thoughts that causes the addiction). Besides that, it’s called porn addiction, but if you deal with this, I think you are addicted to only masturbation because that is the thing that is regulating your mood, not the porn. Porn is harmful because something else. First, masturbation is harmful when you are just using it to regulate and coping with your mood. If you do that all the time you waste your energy (literally) on touching yourself. But the urge of wanting to masturbate is actually the right feeling to have, because you can use that “pain” and “almost uncontrollable energy” to form new connections, to work-out, to read, to do social things without sex. For me I started to have less brainfog and I could find more and better words to speak with and to people. My axienty went away and I remembered more of my day (because I used that energy for all kinds of things during the day that were not Porn or Masturbation). Second, porn is actually not that addictive in my opinion, because I think you can’t like porn if you can’t masturbate to it. Try to watch porn only to see porn. It’s no fun and actually boring. I don’t know if I’m the only one experiencing this. It’s the masturbation that makes it very excited. Porn is harmful (also when you just looking at it without masturbating) because it makes you less aroused when you are having real sex. Real sex is then not that exciting anymore, even when she is just beautiful and very sexual and everything a guy wants in a woman. I found this out when I first had sex with somebody I really liked, I had to force myself to focus on her and our connection. Then it dawned on me that if I hadn’t use porn, I could easily have great and intimate sex with her. I immediately quit porn and masturbation all together, and I told her that I was struggling with this. I asked her to have sex with me when she wants to for a whole year, because I need to reset my baseline. Now I considering myself healthy because I synched with her sexual needs and moments. I’m very grateful for her. ❤

"Doctor, you mentioned that our brain stops developing at 28. I've been addicted since I was 13, and now I'm 25. Does this mean I only have 2 years left to recover and allow my brain to develop properly? If I quit this addiction now, can my brain still catch up on the development I missed?"
@soundcheck2k74 ай бұрын
Yes it can. But it requires a lifestyle change. Get into the gym, start eating organic and whole foods and get 8 hours of sleep. Also, take up reading and learn new things. Your brain will recover and become stronger. It's not late!

I’m not going to lie. I don’t think there’s a way to recover if you started your addiction at an early age. You just have to trudge forward and endure in life. What I’m starting to realize is that there’s no way to escape accountability for the choices of your past- even if you were too young to grasp the consequences when you were making them.

Dr. Trish, my recent issue is I can’t watch porn without smoking dokha (Arabian tobacco in a pipe) at the same time. This is really hurting me coz I’m not a smoker naturally but I have to combine the two for a brief sense of “reality” - I’m really falling and I’m genuinely scared.
