Is this why classism exists? We all subconsciously put ourselves in a class to find "complete friends" because if two people are in the same class they can convince themselves neither one is better than the other despite the problems classism creates for everyone other than those at top.

I think the true friendship often manifests most often as familial or community ties. There can be reasons that family or communities are helpful, but that isn't *why* we feel a bond with them.
@LilEazy33 жыл бұрын
This is an interesting concept as I find myself questioning how even to build a friendship? I think im use to friendships based on needs and wants that I often find myself in 1 sided interactions. Its hard to find a person that just accepts you as you are and still want better for you. Rare indeed.
@acevaver54253 жыл бұрын
Don't worry. That's not how friendships or relationships work. Aristotle is mostly steeped in bullshit. Life isn't so structured or simplistic, the bonds you make is varied by entropy. Your parameter in core values or equality in deposition will not make kinship any more or less enduring. The third type of friendship is just easily dissolved as the first two. You're fooling yourself if you think otherwise, as all things in time change, so will you.
@insertyourfeelingshere81063 жыл бұрын
People like people similar to them, not just personality but as similar as possible from intelligence to economic status. All untrue friendly relationships are based on some sort of mutual gain and will inevitably be temporary Likewise, true friendly relationships are hard to come by because people first need to be comfortable with themselves and then like the familiarity of someone like themself. From there it is a matter of time. Because people like familiarity, people tend to like people more if they've spent more time around them. TL:DR in order to maximize your chances of finding a true friendship. Don't look. Just focus on making yourself the best person you can and preferably in social settings
@MsKassandraKotaku3 жыл бұрын
@@insertyourfeelingshere8106 Some really interesting thoughts you have here. I only have one friendship I would say is a complete friendship. We have been friends for about 15 years now and we've been separated for the last almost 10 (by country). We still talk almost every day and celebrate each other's achievements and accept each other's faults completely. We are not very similar at all. Different socioeconomic status (although both grew up in some aspect of middle class lower vs upper). Different education levels (undergrad vs PhD). And our personalities aren't very similar. But one day, we looked at each other's faults and said "I'm 100% okay with this and being honest with this person." So we call each other on our BS and are there to listen if someone is just having a frustrating day. So I do agree completely with the be comfortable with yourself and your faults and be comfortable that other people will never be perfect.
@NickCombs3 жыл бұрын
Good discussion above. The way I'd describe it is: 1. Be comfortable with yourself and the things you do, imperfections and all. To the point where it's easy to be open about how you feel or what you do in your life to anyone listening. This forms the basis for real connection. 2. Work on empathy. It's easy to understand the concept, hard to internalize and actually feel, and even harder to externalize and demonstrate putting others before ourselves. 3. Venture into social situations to improve the chance of encounters with people who might share these traits. Even if many do not, there's a sort of lead-by-example effect because comfort and empathy are attractive. Both 1 & 2 can be prone to abuse, so it requires some caution to avoid oversharing, being overly emotional about things we can't control, or helping others to the detriment of ourselves. But there are lots of benefits as we get closer to finding that balance. Number 3 is the hardest right now with us all being stuck at home. But some places are starting to reopen.
@GodOfOrphans3 жыл бұрын
@@insertyourfeelingshere8106 All friendships are based on some sort of mutual gain even the true ones, the goal is to find one that's truly symbiotic and with both parties willing to operate at the occasional loss when the inevitable rough patches occur. The most common way I've seen friendships end is either communication breakdown where they move apart and don't see each other regularly like they used to for school, work, hobby shop, gym etc. and one or both parties is unable or unwilling to invest in distanced communication, or an inevitable spat occurs and one or both parties is unwilling to put in the effort to maintain things typically due to laziness or entitlement, typically enabled by how easy it is to cut people off especially if there's physical distance involved.

Nice analysis. I'd add that his need to find an equal, but ends up hating those he finds because they remind him of himself (as you said), is further borne out by the Vindicator episode where he admits it's fine to let his enemies go because he usually ends up partying with them later, ie: when he finds a worthy nemesis it's likely they'll form the 'whole friendship' you describe, despite hating each other.

I really enjoyed this video since Ive been thinking about how devastating it must be for rick that he lost unity and that it makes sense that he fucked a planet cause he litteraly sees himself as “Im just grinding on world of warcarft nothing is important these people are just npcs and Im the most powerful character in the game”, this is similar to how unity feels cause every living person on the surface of the planet that she (imma call her she cause she uses mainly a female body) invades becomes npcs to her and she becomes a god cause she also knows every little detail about every single person that lives on that planet and plus she can experience their “humanly” experiences. For Rick our reality is not important cause we are human but he is not, just to give an example; he litteraly killed or left to die his entire family before that he loves many times just to escape a situation that he put himself into for his own pleasure but he didnt do it because he is a “sociopath” he did it cause he is kinda like a god since he has seen, experienced and done things that not a single other human can do. I mean if you think about it even something as just seeing a whole citadel just made of you and your grandkid(s) is damaging enough to the human psyche to completely change your perspective on everything you experienced and are gonna experience. So it makes sense in my head that the only conscious life form that can match ricks intelligence, completely understand/see the way he likes to experience his life and that can be an equal to him could be “someone” that literally **kills** an entire planet just to posses every person living on it and still knowing everything about the persons identities and consciously being able to experience everything any person experiences on that planet.

I'm going to assume what you said here was genuine. Some people make these statements as a sort of joke--if it is, I'm sure other responses to you will have plenty of humor. Or, maybe my earnest attempt to share will prove amusing. The way I see things... There's really no reason you're here, no value to you that is independent of how you perceive yourself. There is no cosmic measurement by which you are worth less, or more, than anyone else. Even your self-awareness is, for the most part, just a byproduct of social conditioning and a few accidents of development that separate humans from bonobos. People often feel homeless--like they do not belong, that they have no value, and that their way through life is to decay into death. But, there is an obvious solution to this problem. We are here, alive, and we can build a home for ourselves. The Universe is uncaring, but we can choose to care, and we can do right by ourselves and each other for whatever brief span of time we have, whether it is a decade or a million years. And here's a dumb lil' theory I've got, for anyone who made it through the dumb rambling: Doofus Rick solved world hunger in his dimension through recycling food. The other Ricks just can't comprehend why he would do such a thing, and so decided he is dumber and less powerful than they are because the alternative is that the goofy-looking weirdo is the best any of them could hope to be.
@keyoteamendelbar87423 жыл бұрын
@@ih9649 I want to be genuine but, too many bad folk took advantage of that. I won't go into that story so I will go into a different one to prove my point. In some sci-fi world, a brilliant scientist has invented a device to enhance the worlds for peace, a different person decides to weaponize it which makes the brilliant scientist look evil. Another scientist has invented a way to save the world from doom, someone greedy forces him to add a large price tag that few can afford. I won't say which one because there is a lot of them.

@@keyoteamendelbar8742 We have no control over other people's natures. What we do have control over, however slight, is our own natures. Some people will exploit and harm others. We can try to understand them, but we should not base our thinking and actions on the erroneous belief that a single bad consequence is enough to taint all good intentions and results. what i have found out is when you discover something, if you don’t know anything about it, you mainly see the pros instead of the cons. and the more you spend time with that thing or someone you find more cons. so if you find the perfect house your first impressions are that you NEED to buy it, but when you live in it for a few years you find impurities in the paint, or ways you need for certain taps. but when you encounter true friendship (which this is hypothetical for me because i refuse to make a lot of friends for more spare time) and you encounter the cons your friendship is either going to end because you can’t take the cons or you’re going to push through the cons and continue the relationship.

Thank you for making the time to create this video, your analysis with regards to Aristotle were very enlightening, I myself not familiar with his discussion of friendship. Ultimately you are right to question whether his loneliness as a price of near infinite power outweighs his limitation to form bonds. When I consider "Duffus Rick", I remember he is more than able to chemically create chocolate brownies. But this tiny invention brings joy to Jerry, and possibly restores his faith in some small aspect of total Rick nature. If Rick C-137 has the ability to shape civilisations, as is seen by his destruction of entire planets simply to convince Morty that heist movies are a bad idea, is that the most effective use of his power? Would I rather live in a world with "Duffus Rick" or Rick C-137? I think my life span would be significantly longer in "Duffus Ricks" World. Would I rather live in a universe with "Duffus Rick" or Rick C-137? Rick C-137 would most likely offer more protection in a universe of alien entities and extreme physical occurences. However, only if I was from the planet Earth. Either way, indicates I would be better off in a world of "Duffus Rick", but we must remember, I think if you agree, that this show is from the perspective of Rick C-137, hence we have more empathy towards his condition anyway. Thanks for the gift of this thought experiment, I've never seen any of your videos before but I smashed that like button!

It just dawned on my that this is the very reason why I fell out with an old childhood friend. Again. 25 years after the first falling out - followed by 20 years of complete silence. We are just not on the same level. Problem is, only one of us ever saw it that way. Naturally.

The fact that you can make almost a 20 minute video dissecting a ficitonal character using actual philosophy is a testament to this show's writing.

Such quality content as always, fantastic team; but I must say: Oh how Greg has been missed! you can absolutely count me in for the fan club! I respect your decisions doing what you do and is best for you, but I have missed your soothing heartwarming voice and learning from you and laughing about culture and stories. I hope this can be the beginning of you becoming a regular host as Greg or however you want to present
