The way I view death is reverse birth. I was already "dead", by which I mean I didn't exist, for about 13.5 billion years. Then I was born, I'll live however long I live, then I'll return to the same non-existent non-state when my frail body's equilibrium can no longer sustain itself in a way that allows me to be aware of "me". It's a purely natural state for the vast majority of amalgamations of matter in the universe. And once I no longer exist, I won't be around to complain about the fact I don't exist, so it's not really all that scary. I won't exist to experience fear. Unless there's an afterlife, but if there's an afterlife, there must've also been a before life, and there will be an after-afterlife, and so on. But I think the most simplest explanation is death is the end of existence and experience. It's an eternity going by in an instant. But I'm still happy to enjoy existence while I can.

The hologram message for Tony hit me pretty hard. During the poop episode Rick developed a friendship with Tony and even came to accept some of his views. “Why would we fear death we haven’t experienced it,” is classic classroom argument nonsense. It sounds good in class but has no application to truth. We have all seen death, we have seen people we love struggle and fight against death only to fail and die alone in abject terror. So why do we fear death? Because we have seen other people experience it and not many of them seem to enjoy it.
@kunoRochat33 жыл бұрын
No one's arguing the fight against death hasn't been experienced. Something more related to the conversation is if perhaps one were to consider that people who have been "declared dead" and after a couple minutes or in some cases hours of being dead come back to life through medical intervention, that those people have experienced death. The application to the truth as it affects how they live their life still won't be changed if they had or hadn't experienced it. Death is the final end of experience, the ultimate termination of one's existence. Pains, terror, and struggles are trivial in comparison to the complexities of properly reconciling this truth. That being said it is still most rational to not fear an inevitable of unknown consequence, but what I've come to understand about existentialist philosophy is that it is an attempt to do whats right in circumstances where rationality fails and no one else can help. You're effectively missing the point of a statement from people who missed the point of the question

The whole "death gives meaning to life" thing just seems like a different form of denial to me. Death sucks so fucking much that it's understandable that people would come up with some soothing coping mechanisms, but it really annoys me when people tell me that life wouldn't be valuable without death. I'll decide on the value of my existence on my own, thank you very much, and I decided that my life is meaningful even without some arbitrary limitation on it's duration.
@nanabonsu23493 жыл бұрын
I agree with that statement because if life has no end then eventually you'll develop into a state of ennui because there is no urgency to accomplish anything. I view it as more of a coping mechanism for life rather than one for death. Also, we don't know that death sucks because none of us know what death is like

I think one of us missed something in Rick’s big reveal. Tony DID get through to Rick. Rick never does anything except to benefit himself. He can’t show the vulnerability required to build a real friendship. So he built a giant humiliation toilet scene ready to harass Tony. He put time and energy into it, something he just doesn’t do for other people. That’s why he went to the trouble of delivering food that would make Tony super poo. Thanks Michael for being a starving philosopher. I got an engineering degree, but never took any philosophy courses, so this channel is supplementing that. The only thing close to philosophy I came, was quantum mechanics. I found it very hard at first, because I never dealt with uncertainty like that before. Every other subject’s tests had right or wrong answers, and QM has a lot of “it depends” type answers. While this video is specifically about death, it’s also about the anxiety that comes with uncertainty , and having to move forward and make choices despite it. The moment is that most elusive state of being, free from the burden of past mistakes, and the anxiety of not knowing what to do next.

I would love to see a philosophy of Space Dandy. The show doesn't seem philosophically deep until you get to the end but then the end re-frames the understanding of the whole and it would be great to see a breakdown of it.

Great video. Just wanted to add that Tony's car crashing into a tree is a reference to Camus.

That part at the end of the episode after Tony dies and Rick intentionally springs the toilet humiliation trap on himself really captured how Rick's self-loathing colors his interactions with others.

I've always seen the chaos of everything and the inevitability of death as more of a merciful taking away of responsibility than a cruel lack of control

8:37 I'm scared of being tortured even though I havent experienced it. Not actively but if someone was threatening me with it, I wouldn't be like "ya know, this will be a new experience that I might enjoy. I will keep an open mind going into this"

The end scene is very fitting for Rick as the holograms aimed at Tony tell RIck exactly how he feels about himself.

Rick is intelligent enough to see all the ways that he hurts himself and others in sub-quantum level detail while also recognizing (or at least thinking) he is not strong enough to fight the emotional drives that cause him to do so; taking Tony's punishment is another way he can punish himself for that. He may even have created this program with a clear knowledge this could be one of the outcomes. This may be one of the most direct examples of seeing how Rick punishes himself the harshest, which would be pretty typical for a human.
