Modern Rolex watches, especially stainless steel Rolex watches are hugely overvalued and represent poor value on the used market. In this video I'll tell you why I have this opinion.

The thing that annoys me is that even when they are increasing the prices in the past few years, essentially they are still mass producing their watches. There are still QC issues. These issues might be ok at retail prices but that is if you can get those at retail...

Even current Panerai are much nicer better finishing compared to Rolex. Remember Rolex is always one generation behind the current technology ALL other brands offer. Rolex will never be JLC, AP, or Patek Philippe... NEVER not even close. It’s all Rolex fault. Holding back production or stock to the AD’s for whatever reason they hold back for. They inadvertently or purposely caused the Rolex used market inflation.

Rolex also makes you wait and tortures you a bit before you're actually able to obtain the watch. It's called "wait list". Sometimes they even force you to buy another slow-moving model. It's a psychological trick to increase the perceived value because you must suffer first in order to get what you want. It would be possible for them to increase the production ten fold but they don't do it because the scheme works for them. I don't respect brands resorting to such manipulation. Just offer a quality product and if I'm comfortable with the price range I'll buy it. Rolex makes solid watches but they're definitely over-hyped for what they actually are. There are other options and of course there's the option not to buy.

Agreed, and here's an illustration of how ludicrous the situation has become: more recent two tone Daytonas (I'm not good with references, but those with better bracelets, screwed links, and milled clasps, which I think came in from about 2000 onwards) can be had for less, and often less by quite some margin (often around retail), than used stainless steel Daytonas. Same goes for the two tone GMT Master IIs, with the exception of the Root Beer - that one's definitely up there. Definitely a #firstworldproblem but, since you just can't find the stainless steel models in ADs at retail, and since I'm partial to a bit of bling anyway, I will probably go two-tone once I've saved the cash.

Great video, J. Unfortunately, most of this justification for Rolex's selling for far too much money is defended by people who either say it's worth whatever people are willing to pay (poor defense, just look at 2 grand Gucci hoodies), or are trying to keep this market inflated out of their own financial interest. Rolex mass produces 800k-1 million watches per year, so I don't see the time coming when they are going to charge Patek Philippe Nautilus MSRP for a Datejust 41. They make too many watches every year to price themselves out of their own market segment that THEY created. That would be like Porsche charging 200 thousand for a standard 911 or Cayenne. When someone's justification for grossly overpaying for a hyped Rolex is "the market is going to keep going up forever", you know they're not thinking this through. But hey, if you absolutely must pay handmade Royal Oak 15202 money for a machine-made Rolex Pepsi, then be my guest. Just be prepared to lose every penny you paid over retail if it all goes pear shaped.

You lost me at “poor defense.” Something is worth precisely what someone else is willing to pay for it. People have differing views on value. I would not take $50 from you to attend an opera yet tickets sell for $1000 a pop to others. You cannot tell me that every Renoir painting is more masterfully executed than modern day paintings. The perception of quality and rarity make them desirable/valuable. No different with watches or diamonds for that matter.

@@handyman2183 People may have differing views on value, but there comes a point where even seasoned and knowledgeable people in an industry put their feet down and say "that's a bad value for what you're getting". 0:47 A bit more than $12K, actually. The steel Daytona was $12,400 but it was raised to $13,150 in January 1st. In the grey market the black dial is in the low $20K range and the white dial is a few grand more. I was happy to pay $12,400 for my black and white (and $34,650 for my gold emerald green dial). Retail price even seems high (just based on the horology itself when compared to other brands...not based on the demand), let alone the grey market prices but, even if the marker drops, I don't see the values going below the retail prices I paid...at least not for the steel versions. You would be crazy to buy any watch as an investment if you do so at the grey market prices but you would be equally crazy not to buy a Hulk, Pepsi, Batgirl, or a steel Daytona, direct from an AD at retail, if you ever have the chance.

Rolex watches are simply a way to flex on people the material in the watch obviously isn't worth the cost even with the engineering marketing and Manufacturing cost. I'd rather have 15 Citizen Watches a new carbon fiber full suspension mountain bike. A new snowboard all the gear and a couple of vacations and a down payment on a new car for the cost of a Rolex f*** Rolex! If you're going to buy it and keep it really nice to resell later it makes sense otherwise spend your money more wisely as far as I'm concerned a watch that runs off the Sun with a battery that lasts for 15 years is a more advanced technology then a old School technology watch that goes off movement and dies if it's not used for a month the Eco-Drive can go for a year with no sun without stopping. you actually have to be pretty careful with rolex's if you are a rock guy like me one little gir gets off in that b**** doesn't run off movement anymore that's why I got rid of my Rolexes Citizen Eco Drive all day everyday!

Great video, I couldn't agree with you more. Personally I actually would be kind of embarrassed to wear a Rolex. To me they just have a "douchey" connotation. Even though they're probably tough, I'm guessing that not many owners use them as a tool watch. Also, is it weird that every time I see one on anyone under 50 I assume it's fake; I just can't shake that! 😊

Let people throw away their money to feel special. Everyone knows its ridiculous and silly to be so extravagant. Especially when they brag about things like water tightness, accuracy, robustness, size, second hand sweeps. A watch needs to do 4 things, tell time, look good, feel good, be tasteful. Many watches under $1,500.00 meet that criteria. Too many to count. Why be crass and pretentious when you can exhibit common sense and frugality.

People are paying the prices for Rolex because they know that they can sell it next day because they can not afford the watch. Paraphilia can be about cars and other mechanical items and I suspect the watches are included. In some countries this behaviour is punishable by law.

I’m not into smart watches except for sports and exercise , but it was just announced the other day that Apple sold more watches then the whole Swiss Watch industry combined. The guy said that it’s mainly the older crowd that gravitates to mechanical watches and the younger crowd are into smart watches. The Swiss Watch industry will have to change and get real with pricing or perish.

Overpriced, overvalued, well I'm a bit sick of people saying that. Lots of things is overpriced, art, property, cars, jewelry etc etc. Why does people go into a jewelry shop and buy a gold ring for $10.000 when the actual gold in the ring is maybe worth $50 and the diamond on it is just a piece of overvalued fancy glass? Why is a Ferrari 250 GTO from 1960's worth millions when a brand new Golf is faster, and better as a car in every possible way? Well because people appreciate beauty, and s willing to pay for it. Rolex have done well, and people are willing to pay more than retail for some models. Well still some would say that $10.000 would be way to much for a SS Daytona, so nothing will change I guess, as opinions are many and will always be aired.

Yup. Rolex is betting on replicating the Patek's model, getting more lifetime value catering to a few million enthusiasts wealthy enough to snap up novelties every year, vs. continuing its 70s-00s model of being the aspirational watch for middle class strivers who'll get one on name recognition and then never transact with the brand again. For a while I thought this was sound (if hypercynical) planning, but now I'm not sure. The level of anger and resignation towards Rolex has never been higher and they seem to finally be eating into their "untouchable" brand equity.
@dialanddram
@dialanddram 4 жыл бұрын
Rolex mass-produce watches. Even their steel sports models are churned out in the tens of thousands every single year, year after year. There is absolutely no way they can compete with the likes of Patek, Vacheron, AP, Lange, etc on exclusivity, unless they completely change their business model to that of a haute horology brand that only produces a few thousand pieces a year, which would be giving up everything they know, everything they're good at, and everything that gives the name Rolex its current value. Rolex is the biggest name in luxury watches because Rolex is *ATTAINABLE.* Every day folks can aspire to some day owning a Rolex, and achieving that is a metric by which a lot of people judge having 'made it' all over the world. If they try to become Patek or whatever, they're gonna fail, and somebody else will take their place as the king of the everyman luxury watch brands. I'm sure Omega or Breitling would absolutely love for Rolex to give them that chance. Current prices on steel sports Rolex watches are driven purely by hype; it's a fad, and like all fads, it will eventually pass.
