@Apple Sauce "A Mary Sue is a type of fictional character, usually a young woman, who is portrayed as unrealistically free of weaknesses." All-Star Superman is a story when Super-man was finally reaching his mortality and how much the world changes without him. He is the symbol of hope and with him gone, the world's everlasting hope was gone. The book begins to deconstruct all of Superman's relationships even Lex Luthor. Lex Luthor is the perfect villian for Superman because he is the exact opposite. His intents are good, he wants to make the world stronger by getting rid of Superman because the overreliance on such a god-like being will more likely cause the world to shatter. When Lex finally receives his powers, what we thought was going to be chaos was instead an enlightenment to Lex. He saw how Superman saw the world and it broke him down. The moral difference between Superman and Lex is that SUPERMAN has humanity and that is what made him great. It was never about the powers you fucktards love to critique him about or his secret identity, it was how human he was. Now onto Superman's flaws because you guys love to throw the word Mary sue without even knowing what it means. Superman isn't a mary sue at all, many times he would lose to the latest villian of the week, his over-idealistic and overwhelming sense of humanity can often cause problems with his relationships like Lois Lane. Many times he'd use his powers, he often had to worry about the overall destruction he would cause and balancing his new life is a literal pain. Hell, at one point, he couldn't even breathe in space because of his lack of experience. The argument of characters getting powers overtime is retarded because then with that logic, you can call ANYONE a mary-sue.

As for later in the video, Superman does train and he's nowhere near the top of the dcverse let alone comics in general, not that it matters because the storyline goes how the writers will it to. In the end, Superman is hope, and you cannot kill hope.
@paulallen8109
@paulallen8109 3 жыл бұрын
"You're supposed to aspire to be as morally powerful as superman." Please. Superman never faces any morally ambiguous situations and has so far only managed to keep the status quo of humanity - i.e. not fundamentally changed a frickin' thing. Most sophomores in senior high school have read about more complex issues and moral difficulties than Superman has. Besides, it's all very straightforward and simple for him with zero drawbacks. Basically he is a Greek god. Strong, adventurous and amazing. Always right too.
@paulallen8109
@paulallen8109 3 жыл бұрын
@@presidentbutterpudding4025 "In the end, Superman is hope, and you cannot kill hope." You just perfectly summed up Superman's appeal and inadvertently explained why is un-relatable. Here are some quotes about the downsides of hope by many famous writers, statesmen and philosophers: "Hope is the last thing a person does before they are defeated." "Hope is the last thing that dies in man; and though it be exceedingly deceitful, while we are traveling through life it conducts us in an easier and more pleasant way to our journey's end." "A leader is a dealer in hope." - Napoleon Bonaparte (this should serve as a warning). "Never give out while there is hope; but hope not beyond reason, for that shows more of desire than judgement." "Hope? Words without actions are the assassins of idealism." - Herbert Hoover "Hope in reality is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torment of man." - Friedrich Nietzsche (famous philosopher) "Hope is the denial of reality. It is the carrot dangled before the draft horse to keep him plodding along in a vain attempt to reach it." "Hope is the mother of fools." - Polish proverb (a lot of foolish hope in people) "The cure for despair is not hope. It's discovering what we want to do about something we care about." - Margaret Wheatley Yes, these are real people. Not like your imaginary Superman. "In the end, Superman is hope, and you cannot kill hope." Sure you can. Ask any terminally ill cancer patient. Once they reach a certain stage then hope dies and they realize that they have to prepare for their inevitable fate of dying in cancer. Hope is for desperate, ignorant and lost people. It's for all those who have no plans, no viable actions or nothing useable. It's for all those stuck in their lot in life going nowhere. Rational and logical people don't deal in hope. At any rate it should never be in the driver's seat and what you pin everything on. Now with Superman there is a huge problem. Why would an incredibly powerful being able to do a lot of good be reduced to a mere symbol of *hope* ?? He should be a being of action which solves everything bad not just be a passive umpire in a game which people hope deals out punishments for those who get "out of line". Superman is basically the "Superhero Space-Jesus". A deity. The light and hope of mankind. Salvation for those of hope/faith. For the ignorant and powerless who are too blind to see the inner workings of the world, its underlying structures and who lack life experience. Ironically the all-powerful superman who could quite easily change things for the better is reduced to a figure of mere hope. A passive deity (god). Religion works the very same way. Salvation based on hope and almost exclusively from hope alone. And as such Superman is as ill-suited to tell any 21st century man about the workings of the world and what we are facing than any of the ancient religions.

@@paulallen8109 I'm not exactly a superman fan, but I disagree with you. Do you understand that superman is in fact fighting not with the problems of the world, but with human nature? Yes, logically, Superman can solve all the problems of humanity and start telling everyone how to live and, in fact, become a dictator, or as you said God. Then I have a question about what then the readers will take out? Following your logic, people will not be inspired to do something good themselves, but will simply wait for their savior to come and solve all their problems. Superman is not a god but a man of tomorrow, he is an example of a man who people can become. Your quotes about hope and terminally ill people are not suitable because you cannot understand that Superman is not the hope of a savior, but the hope that we ourselves must become saviors for each other in order to make the world a better place. You're wrong about Superman not having moral dilemmas. The very choice to become superman and show the world who you are is a dilemma. Whether to keep the villains alive is a dilemma. Continuing to be a superman after you have had your own family and a child is also a dilemma. I guess you can't understand that by nature Superman is a mask for humanity and Clark Kent is a real person with human problems. Yes, he has no physical disabilities, but he still has moral problems. And before someone mentions is home planet being destroyed A he was a baby so that doesn't count and for anyone that wants to mention John kents death superman still has his mommy with him unlike a certian other hero who both of his parents were murdered directly infront of him. And that hero actually had to work for it because he wasnt blessed and gifted extreme powers as soon as he was born. " and even though he is a alien" Not much of an alien when he looks like any other human and has zero alien traits in him and blends in just perfectly with all people. What's remotely alien about him? He is even called Super *man* not Super *kryptonian* or something. "He is more human than a lot of people on earth " No, he can't be because he doesn't face their hardship and their fragile existence and mortality. "because of his kindness and good sense of character" And *that* is exactly why he doesn't work. We're living in a complex world of wildly conflicting views and constant struggle. A lot of people believe they're doing good (or at least "the right thing") but end up looking like bad people to others. Good work and kindness is far from universally admired, if it were then most people would look up to altruistic work to help the misfortune, downtrodden and unlucky. They don't. In fact far more people look up to bad politicians who groom them all and play them like a fiddle. Superman is more akin to a super strong Space-Jesus. Somebody who is a savior if you believe in him and somebody who is always right. Your very own guardian angel who is looking out for you and protects you. Sorry, he is more a god than a man. I relate to people not to infallible gods.

So what you're actually talking about in this video is "Superman is the most powerful superhero and I'm telling you that means it's bad" when in reality superman being strong isn't a bad quality. @Apple Sauce I dont think you know what I mean by "extreme." What I mean is that every character at this point was an extremely cool and extremely bad ass and extremely powerful. Image literally created a series called eXtreme. If you Google extreme comics all you're going to get is issues from the 90s. I'm surprised you didnt already know how extreme the 90s were. Also yeah every comic was being outperformed by image comics in the 90s because everyone was interested in their new collection of characters.

Superman's "idealism and morals" are his most important traits? No, not by a long shot. Plenty of other heroes are just a moral and idealistic as Superman. What makes those superheroes identifiable is that they actually have to TRY. Superman is just handed powers and those powers are increased even more when he actually comes up against something that can actually beat him at his current level. There's no tension whatsoever in any Superman story because while we all know that protagonists in fiction in general nearly always win, other protagonists actually have to work for it and Superman doesn't. What really makes this awful is that the vast majority of Superman's enemies are nowhere near as powerful as he is. It would be one thing if they were just as powerful as Superman and could in fact beat him in a straight fight. However, since they aren't the vast majority of Superman stories require Superman to either be depowered or have Kryptonite thrown at him in order to be able to work at all because otherwise nobody stands a chance against him. If you have to weaken your protagonist in order for the story to work you have a terrible protagonist. Don't even get me started about taking Superman's friends and allies hostage to threaten them instead. Not only is that just passing the buck but with Superman's powerset he's able to easily save them anyway. Not to mention the fact that the same thing happens to every other superhero in existence yet is done infinitely better because the bad guys are able to threaten the hero personally. It's bad to threaten Lois Lane because Superman will just blow past the villain and save her effortlessly. It's good to threaten Mary Jane because Spider-Man actually risks getting killed trying to save her and perhaps more importantly there's a risk Peter could actually fail even if he doesn't get killed because it actually means something. It's one thing to have a bad guy go "MUHAHAHA!!! You're sweet Pollyanna is my hands now OPman! You'll have to watch her di... oh COME ON! I spent weeks on that trap and you didn't even have to try?" Before the villain gets beaten with a flick of OPman's finger. And quite another for a bad guy to go "MUHAHAHA!!! You're sweet Pollyanna is my hands now OPman! You'll have to watch her die!" While the villain has his foot on OPman's head and he struggles to get up after an intense beatdown by the villain. Superman is the personification of everything that could possibly be wrong not just with superheroes but protagonists.

@christianiguess7039 3 жыл бұрын
@@immortalfrieza you're wrong. All of your points are true facts, but that doesnt make him bad. The physical battles in a story are not the interesting parts of it, the emotional battles are. We can't relate to Batman beating up 20 thugs in an alleyway while trying to rescue vickie vale, but we can relate to batman having an argument with alfred the man who raised him. We're never going to relate to superman saving the day from brainiac, but we will be able to relate to superman being criticized for his morals by Lex Luthor who just thinks he's better in every way. Lex luthor is pessimist and views the world in the easy way: that everyone can and will fail him. Superman is the optimist who makes the hardest choice, to view the world as though everyone can fail him, but chooses to believe they wont.

The thing is Superman isn't supposed to be dark and bruting, but as apose to himself is supposed to be someone who sincerely genuine, Clark is a dude, dispite all his unbelievable power, he still a man, some of the best Superman stories are the ones that focuses on his humanity, Superman represents the best of humanity, the one who has all the answers to all the worlds problems yet can't solve them all, he's an idea of heroically sincerity of an older time Clark Kent is the other side of superman, some one who loves going to work, being with Lois lane, seeing his Ma And Pa and living the best life he can with or without it, he is more of a figure of hope ( I admit he is pretty over powered) but that's kind of the point, dispite his power he always has to exercise control to stop from crushing from buildings with a single grab, everything is like cardboard to him, Clark Kent is an outsider, an orphan, and an the last of his kind, Clark though understands he is overpowered, and nobody knows what it's like to have this power and sincerely try to control abilities this great In this Clark says he's genuinely fells lonely And afraid, as if he were living in a world of cardboard I believe Superman has a lot to say about humanity and what it means to be human Some times ( just like him) we lose control Many times Superman wasn't fast enough to save innocent lives, Manny times he wasn't strong enough to carry the grief of his people and him self Thing about Superman is that he is a man Nuff said...😊😮.

@thedevilofhellskitchen. I've heard a lot of people say that about Superman, Clark may have powers, but for years has had the struggle to control his strength, and the fear of being taken away from his parents because of his abilities And as Superman always has to struggle with the burden of not being able to save people, because the entire world rests on his shoulders, the entire Justice League looks up to him nothing comes easy for clark, He always laments when he fails at being able to save one person It's only the people in his life like his Ma and Pa that keep him grounded because he loves them and they inspire him to be better The truth is not many people read his comics, and movies haven't done the best at adapting this He may be Super, but he's still a Man

That’s why the writers had to add this weakness called kryptonite which is basically just some obstacle Superman always has to deal with more than just a weakness. For any stupidly overpowered character eventually looses conflict if fighting on equal terms. Now that isn’t saying every strong character is bad it’s just that you have to be mindful of there weaknesses as well instead of focusing on there strengths all the time.

2:20 This is where the video enters the “Superman is bad because he’s overpowered” of the video. My personal thoughts about “Overpowered” is that it’s subjective and relative and doesn’t necessarily make a character bad, so as it is explained why a character can do this and they’re not just pulling things out of a hat just cause. Batman could be overpowered to someone because he’s a man who can bend steel and he's on par with an 8 foot lizard and a Mexican on steroids despite being a regular human being. A lot of this is simply a misunderstanding of Superman’s character in abilities. He doesn’t gain unlimited power from the sun. His kryptonian cells take in solar radiation similar to that of a plant. Different suns can either weaken or empower him. His cells store this energy within him, giving him access to his abilities. The closer he is to the sun's radiation, the more powerful he gets. Kryptonians even on krypton where they revolve around a red sun, a sun that negates and even poisons them to a certain extent as it discharges their cells If they have any yellow sun radiation, are still capable of flight but are largely an advanced technological race. Getting rid of the sun or negating his ability to intake solar energy doesn’t automatically get rid of his abilities as Kryptonian physiology work similar to a solar battery as his cells store this energy but if he loses his access to do that it would just cause the cells in his body to drain the solar energy as they try to keep his powers. This degradation varies depending on how quickly or slowly it happens. Also, I don't like how he poses it as he’ll never be beaten just off that. It’s like saying so as long as Barry has access to the Speed Force, he’ll never be beaten when for both of them that’s never shown to be the case. He also goes to mention the magic weakness and his argument is that he’s too fast for the magic user. This isn’t always the case. They rarely write superman as this god of unlimited strength and speed. It also depended on narrative and a bit of power scaling to make such a claim. It’s not really shown that he can move faster than a person. There are even several comics of him taking magic hits and taking damage. THe reason for this is one of two things or both. Magic in DC defies reality and is reliant on the user's will and ability to use it. Characters like Zatanna, John Constantine, and Dr. Fate prove this many times. Kryptonian solar energy also doesn’t mix well with magic. This is proven when Diana and Superman try to mix their energies in order to combat a villain. 3:46 This is largely another case of Overpowered equals bad. Superman is ONE of the strongest but isn’t even close to the strongest beings in DC, let alone the very universe they reside in. Even this is in contentious debate, depending on which version of Superman you’re talking about. It’s also funny when he puts up scans that go against his argument, as you can clearly see Hal Jordan having a large construct around the earth as Superman struggles to even pull that. The animated version varies slightly from the comics because in the Death of Superman arc, Doomsday does in fact kill him. They kill each other at the same time and not in a superman crash into the ground sort of way. They each deliver fatal blows that kill one other. They each come back with Doomsday having to never die the same way twice. I will say, however, that Superman’s reason for coming back is one of two reasons. Either it's because he was in a “healing coma” rather than actually dying or that they brought him back using Solar energy and kryptonian technology. Both reasons fall short and surprisingly I like BvS movie’s version of this where he’s brought back by a motherbox. I also don’t agree with his reason for the movie as it clearly states that the planet they were on had a workaround for the death cases. It's Krypton's advanced technology and more so the fact that He was close to dying, his body simply persevered the parts that matter most to keep him alive. Humans in real life have this. With you being shot or receiving a grave injury (like with Clark) the body keeps the vital organs and brain working as hard as possible to keep you alive. Meanwhile, doctors do surgery to keep you alive. In fact, this makes him more human and relatable. Disregard my previous statement. This version is the best. 5:36 I definitely don’t like this part of the argument because if you put it into terms of anyone else in fiction, it doesn’t work. “No one can ever aspire to be that strong.” This doesn’t work because you can’t look at any character with powers or any character ‌(to a certain extent) and aspire to be that strong. Batman can bend steel with his bare hands through sheer will and strength. Spider-Man climbs walls. Naruto can throw a giant wind shuriken that cuts you down on a cellular level. A Lot of the time in fiction characters can scale to their AP and Durability, meaning they can tank the very hits they throw to a certain extent. Goku is shown to do this against Goku Black.

Superman is just a guy who wants to do the right thing not because he thinks he has to but because he wants to. "That’s what being a hero is all about, helping people, and doing the right thing no matter what." And what do *you* know about that?? Speaking from your own experience? Do you have ANY aspirations of being an everyday hero yourself by helping the less fortunate or even assisting the old lady carrying her heavy grocery bags? Who have you ever spoke up for and defended? Have you ever decided to work to stop the ruling elite? Even raised a single word in disapproval of their antics? What do *you* know about heroism? Who are you to judge it? As for doing "the right thing". Please. You're talking as if this is something perfectly clear and obvious. The world is unfortunately a complex place. What *you* believe is the "right thing" others believe is bad, wrong or even evil. I don't know if you have been paying attention or not to world affairs and people's behavior (sarcasm) but just doing the right thing can often be misunderstood, ridiculed or even have unfortunate consequences. And let me inform you of this: All religions have committed unspeakable acts of cruelty (including genocide) and they ALL justified their actions with the simple "the right thing". Why? Because to them their religion is 100% sacred so they can't be wrong and therefore they're doing "the right thing". Those who stormed the Capitol Building recently were all convinced they were "doing the right thing". In their mind they were convinced they were fighting for freedom against tyranny. They are convinced they're the "good guys" saving their country. You know who the bad guys are? All the narrow-minded fools who yell for their blood and want them all executed for treason. Rather than thinking it all through and what led them all to come to this conclusion and all the bad factors and wrong decisions that pushed them to do such a thing, all in the name of learning from this and preventing it from happening again, many just go Medieval mob and scream for their blood. Yes, that has always worked in history... not. Yes, "do the right thing". As if it's totally black and white and obvious. Mind you that's a superhero you're talking about. I've read quite a few superman comics which my friend borrowed me. Not once did I think:"Wow, Superman is a really complex character and he is facing situations which might lead him to the damned if you do/damned if you don't many of us face." I'll willingly admit that I'm glad that Superman is apolitical and that he doesn't get involved in human wars or the very fickle human politics. That being said all of that takes a backseat to the fictional supervillains he is facing who in my experience just are hellbent on destroying earth and nothing more. Simple. "All in all this video sucks." All of it? Not a valid point here and there? And you come across as somebody still mentally 12.

@@paulallen8109 Then let me ask you this. Do *you* know anything about heroism? Just because he’s never given to charity doesn’t devalue giving to charity. Just because he’s never helped an old lady across the street doesn’t mean he doesn’t know that that’s a good thing. That’s like saying just because you’ve never cooked food, you don’t know what cooking is. Why is it that Superman is the only character that cannot portray the idea of doing the right thing hmm? Is it because you’re biased and ignorant towards the fact? Or do you just not like Superman because he’s not an edgy try hard. Doing the right thing is doing the right thing simple as that. If you give money to the poor then that’s doing the right thing, there is no complication that arises from that. If you save someone from a burning building, that’s doing the right thing. It’s not a philosophical dilemma, even characters like Batman and Spider-Man do this. The very characters that you yourself cited. Stop reaching for nonsense arguments What Superman deals with is how his bigger actions affect the world around him. That’s the main struggle. And no, no other character has ever been stories where morality and consequences for *real* world global issues are Center stage. If you do know any then by all means tell me, because I can name a few Superman stories that do this. Saying that Superman stories only deal with bad guys trying to destroy the planet is hypocritical because every other superhero is literally just that. Superman’s stories are built from that very question of good or evil. Unlike Batman who is sure about his moral code. Superman questions whether or not he can be the best example for other people while constantly second guessing whether or not he’s actually doing the right thing. And news flash for the umpteenth time *Superman struggles in a fight.* He’s one of the few characters in comic book history that loses CONSTANTLY. In fact Batman has rarely lost a fight to anyone. In most occasions he casually defeats individual members of the Justice League AND the entire Justice League. If you don’t like these stories then you don’t like them because they’re not for you period. You’re twisted view when it comes to morality, that doing the right thing is hard because this world is “complex” ultimately makes you sound childish and indecisive.

Here is the reason why superman is the worst. Superman was never entitled to these powers. He was given a selective few powers which were great in 1938. He never had to fight for his purpose of idealism to do the right thing. He was already a good character. The problem arises when fan boys got to write the story over the Original creators. This is where the real problem began. All of the stories are unrelateable. Not one story ever enhances the original message from 1938. Instead the creators use pseudoscience to make him into a god among men. That is superman now. He was once an idealism for good, but now is a force held by an iron gauntlet of powers that promotes fear. He promotes fear by the writters claiming nothing can be better than him and you should accept his existence as they write about him. Sounds a lot like some religions of today, don't you think?

Superman is a great superhero. For kids. We're talking people aged 5-12 here who have a limited understanding of the world and its goings and therefore want some superhero who is far stronger than anybody else, has several powers, has no flaws and is loved by everybody. He is the ultimate kiddie fantasy of what a superhero should be. Super strong and unstoppable. Once somebody gets older and understands the realities of the world and how the heroes don't always win, that they aren't always thanked and appreciated, and sometimes even made out to be villains themselves by cunning people who have a great ability to discredit them - you'll understand that there are way more relatable superheroes. Now let's have a look at the popular DC superhero Batman and the popular Marvel superhero Spider-man. Batman is a mere man who is naturally trained. The villains he is up against either are stronger than him or have an ability to manipulate others, toy with him and push him to do things which turns him into a monster. At core he is just a masked vigilante who dwells in the shadows. He doesn't let anybody get close to him and comes across as a humorless psycho to some people because he has a strict look on his face. He can't just overpower his enemies but has to use his great detective skills - i.e. use his brain - to outsmart the villains and predict their next move as if it were a game of chess. More often than not Batman is never thanked for saving Gotham City and is generally seen as some "unhinged man playing police" and "dishonest enough never to show his face". His arch enemy is a man who is his antithesis - a man who sees the world as a great chaos and bizarre joke on everybody. The Joker is a man Batman feels he can neither understand nor stop which in turn forces him to go beyond the mere "noble superhero" role time and time again. Spider-man is by all accounts a perfectly ordinary man with ordinary and common problems we all face in life. His problems don't just begin and end with defeating a great gallery of supervillains but he constantly has to race against the clock to finish his work as a photographer, find time for a date (and getting late due to being held up by a villain), struggles to pay rent in the shabby rental apartment he lives at and is constantly berated in a never-ending smear campaign by the owner of the Daily Bugle who hates him with a passion. Regular people also sometimes show ingratitude towards Spider-man and on more than a few occasions his "superhero-ing" backfires and he is scapegoated for having escalated something or even unfairly called the instigator. No matter how much right he tries to do it never seems enough and his civilian life is a constant struggle of making ends meet. Very relatable for those who know how hard and unfair life can be, even if one tries to do good and help out. The supervillains Spider-Man is up against are often stronger than him, sometimes far stronger and in their first encounter they often beat him to a pulp forcing him to flee home and plan the next step. Other times he collapses on his bed out of exhaustion from the tough fight. Often he has to outwit them and lure them into using their own powers against themselves. Despite this many episodes ends with him losing either somebody dear in some way or ending up in a worse position in life then when he started. Sometimes the villain turns out to be somebody close to him (Norman Osborn was the father of his good friend Harry Osborn). X-men? They are seen as mutant freaks by the public and are constantly struggling for their acceptance in society. On top of that there are bad mutants who are hostile towards humanity which makes everybody believe all mutants are bad. Here's the thing: The position of the bad mutants is understandable because they see the worst in humanity and have decided they can't wait to be exterminated and have to strike first (very common theme in human history with wars). The good mutants meanwhile are put in an unenvious position of saving the people who hate them (humans) while trying to defeat the bad mutants (their kin) and convince everybody that peace and co-existence is the best option. A very difficult position for them. Superman? He is a god everybody worships as their savior. Everybody puts their hope on him and root for him. Since he is incredibly strong the only villains who can go up against him are intergalactic monsters you just know are bad and strong. As for myself. I never ever truly liked superman even as a kid and got bored of him real quick. A friend of mine who is into high quality comic books gave me a few newly penned Superman comics to read and while I'll admit they were nice looking I simply couldn't relate to Superman as a character. Are Batman or Spider-man impervious to bullets? No, they are very mortal. Therefore a mere guy with a gun is a genuine threat to them. To superman a whole army with field artillery, missiles and even a nuclear device can't do sh*t to stop him.

So you did not understand the meaning of Superman. It´s not about superpowers, the core of a character is its behaving, its moral and its message for us. Superman fans don´t care what he can do, they care what he does. He´s a symbol of hope, justice and the good in every person. The ultimate will of just doing the right things. Beside this leading to awesome philosophical questions and story lines, it makes him to a role model. So personally speaking, Superman makes me a better person. And I thing for many people it´s just the same. Like Batman says in Batman Begins: "It´snot what I am underneath, but what I do that defines me" (And I´m sorry for my not 100% perfect English. Sure, but isn't that the message of the word "hero"? That message can be taken from one's parent to a police officer to another hero like Spider-Man. The fact that many don't like him is because of the increased amount of unbelievability and boringness that he provides in his stories. Granted stories like Injustice have reinstated him as an interesting character as a villian.

Played up to be comical is the most spectacularly well drawn fashion possible. He is not supposed to be relatable. He’s meant to be a joke. You talk about superman’s superpowers but completely leave out the one thing that was developed in him that people need today more than ever. A genuine warmth and kindness. As a casual fan of all the characters cited... even I know there are countless examples that completely contradict all of these points. I mean this is truly some opposite world stuff. Superman AND Siatama are not supposed to be relatable for example, in fact the entire point of their characters is the opposite. There are also countless stories of superman struggling and losing, but not in the way you seem to think, because you are entirely missing the point of his character. It's not about how strong he is. The problems he faces are nuanced conflicts like politics and no-win scenarios where infinite strength isn't enough. Also there are TONS of times where he fights gods and aliens who are even stronger then him if that really matters to you. Just read the actual comics guys. They are entirely different then are expecting them to be.

I absolutely agree with you. I've never liked Superman. To me it's almost like they a 12 year old came up with the idea, "he's as strong as 100 men." Then his friend say, "well I just came up with a super hero who's as strong as 1,000 men." The 1st 12 year old say, "well my hero can move a planet, and he has heat vision." And this goes on and on and on until Superman is so over powered that there should only ever be 1 Superman comic, and in that comic there is a single page with a single frame that simply says, "Superman win, the end." He's so over powered there's nothing that can challenge him. You brought up One Punch Man, but One Punch Man isn't infinitely strong, he's definitely super strong but not infinitely strong. The current creators of Superman when asked how strong he actually copped-out by saying, "he's as strong as he needs to be," and that sounds exactly like what a 12 year old would say, "well my super hero is as strong as he needs to be, that way your hero can never be strong enough to defeat him." So because Superman is, "as strong as he needs to be," One Punch Man wouldn't stand a chance against him, no one would, so, "Superman wins, the end."

Okay I'm just gonna put this out the only reason anyone would think that "Superman" is a dumb concept is because the modern world is no longer a stranger to super heroes. Superman is literally GENRE and Generational defining he's the grand daddy of Superheroes. He might not be exactly the first but he was definitely the one many agree upon as the beginning of the golden age of heroes. Search up any "superhero" pre Superman and you'll get some regular goobers/people in funky looking costumes like Zorro, The Phantom, hell even Popeye and Tarzan are considered a superhero all regular dudes with maybe 1 special ability. Why do you think kids even think of the concept of super powers like super strength and super speed and heat vision its because Superman popularized it. The creators took what is basically feats of power that only god could do and put them in a nice colorful costumed guy. The reason why Batman exists or any hero after that is because they either are a response to Superman or trying to differ from the norm that Superman has put in place. As for your point of him being too overpowered. "He's as strong as he needs to be" is basically any fucking Superhero. Batman is as strong as the plot needs him to be why do you think he always manages to fight on equal footing with gods sometimes they give LITERAL PLOT ARMOR like the Hellbat suit or his endgame suit in the new 52 that lets him just body any superhero he wants. Spider-Man has the capacity to support an ENTIRE SKYSCRAPER but the plot makes him weak so that he can be beaten in the comics. Its like you can only see "He's as strong as he needs to be" as something that constantly goes up and never goes down. Another thing too there's plenty of villains that are on par with Superman's level. Finally you should actually read OPM because saying he's not "infinitely" strong is flat out wrong. OPM's entire gimmick is that he's infinitely strong/has no ceiling. The new chapter basically has him grow in an exponential rate to the point where he's just infinitely stronger than anything. It's what the writers do with that, that makes it interesting. OPM is infinitely strong but because his life is boring and nothing excites him anymore. Superman is as strong has he needs to be to deal with any situation but what if those situations can't be fixed with his brute strength alone like how will Superman handle suicidal people? How does he handle world hunger? How does he handle public opinion? Superman might be infinitely strong but he can't save everyone like his adopted father Jonathan Kent. I seriously recommend at least watching Superman vs. The Elite or All Star Superman.

The problem is that there isn't a type of constraint you can place down on how powerful Superman can be. The comic books and their editorial let him go all over the place. You could arguably have him be concerned with saving everyone, but even then, unless helping as many people as possible is something where what makes it epic? What makes it epic is like Spider-Man stopping the train in SM2, which is basically a case where something has to exhaust him somehow. I mean, if in Superman: The Movie, if that was both Superman's death or the complete loss of his powers, then basically, he's not that interesting. I only really liked the 90s animated Superman, because that one could be hurt by quite a bit of things like missiles, artillery, really good bullets, etc., in addition to Kryptonite, so he was a character in the animation by Timm/Dini that had to use his brains to win quite a bit, he was nowhere near as rediculously powerful as you see in comics, unless you are talking early Golden Age.

@@ridgefrost Forgetting all those times he gets defeated alongside the Justice League by Batman. All those times he gets manhandled by his villains. And all those times he gets 1 upped by other superheroes. People seem to be Bi-Polar when it comes to the reason they hate Superman. They keep saying he’s too overpowered yet somehow they still like to believe that he’s slower than flash, weaker than Martian Manhunter, and that Shazam could beat him cuz he uses magic. Of course there were times when Superman is overpowered but the thing that you guys never ever acknowledge is that ALL superheroes have a lot of overpowered moments. Flash’s speed is bare minimum faster than light and even the weakest versions of him can at least reach past the sound barrier. Shazam once punched a black hole into existence and ran just as fast and Flash, which not even superman can do. Wonder Woman caught shards and fragments of a god which were going so fast it flew across the Multiverse in a matter of seconds and even TOOK DOWN Superman while he thought she was Doomsday so he wasn’t holding back. This isn’t even the only time she’s ever defeated Superman as well. Hell even Aquaman held his own against him. What people don’t seem to also get is that just because Superman says he’s “holding back” it doesn’t automatically mean that he’s going to win if he wasn’t. If he wasn’t holding back against Emperor Joker (who had Mr. Mxyzptlk’s power) do you really think he would’ve won? Short answer is no. The reason he holds back is because he actually CARES about whether or not he’s hurting his enemies and so he hesitates and pulls punches even if that costs him the fight. You all have the exact same argument and some of you would even go so far as to claim to have “been a superman fan” when it’s pretty obvious that you aren’t. Otherwise you wouldn’t fail to mention all those times he keeps getting bodied by Batman, or needing help to fight villains like Parasite and Metallo to the point where he’s literally about to DIE. And look before you say that I’m not allowing you to not have your own opinion (because I’ve had a fair share of beta humans use that stupid argument in a debate they started) it’s fine if you hate him. But you really should stop claiming that just because you hate him he’s “The worst superhero.” Because he’s clearly not even if you hold him in a low Standard. He may be boring to you because he’s standard fair in his character, but that’s because he’s literally the first ever actual superhero that DC published. And yes I can fully say he’s the first superhero because characters like the Spirit or Zorro who predated Superman are Pulp Heroes not Superheroes. He was the first to even ever establish the conventions in his genre so it’s not really fair to use the “He’s a cliché boring stereotype” to justify calling him the worst because in the first place he was the one that started the whole thing.

I feel like with superman...he’s TOO strong. There’s being ‘strong’ and then there’s being ‘too strong’. The problem with superman is that because of all this power he has...it takes away all the other special qualities of superheroes in the justice league. For example, one of my favourite heroes, the flash. His superpower revolves around being incredibly fast. However, superman, too is fast. Although, arguably, he is not (speaking from a lot of the comics) “as fast” as flash, sometimes, it still takes away everything special about the flash because superman too has that ability. Secondly, Wonder Woman. She’s incredibly agile, strong, fast (Not flash level fast). However, superman too has these qualities so it takes away everything special about her character. Then it leads you to question why in the hell there even IS a justice league, when superman half the time clearly overpowers them all (speaking from the film). It’s awful and you feel like the way the DCU portrays superman is just TOO much. And anyone who says superman isn’t relatable clearly hasn’t read the comics. Sure, this is a great argument when referring to the films. The DCU portrays having ‘power’ as a personality trait. However in the comics, superman IS quite relatable at times. From his upbringing, to his motives, and even HUMOUR. In the comics, he is driven by emotion. He has a great need to want to help people, because he has the power to do so. I think superman’s portrayal in the DCU is just due to poor writing. Instead of focusing on his powers, they could’ve been focusing on his drive and motivation to help people. That would’ve made him at least the slightest bit more likeable. SOZ FOR THE ESSAY THO

Superman is one of, if not the most relatable superhero of all time. the inability to fit in, growing up in a world built on beating you down, so many things as a regular human being would relate to. He's the pinnacle of what God is, a god that is proof that he can see the same through humans. Superman is someone despite having the power to hurt others, he chooses to fight for his friends. He feels lonely and isolated constantly, he is the greatest hero for being able to feel what everyone feels as an individual. Literally individualism. I think it’s a combination of things that make Superman weak as a character. First being not that relatable. His home planet was destroyed, but he was a baby when it happened, so he never really experienced it happening. As for being an alien. Practically everyone loves him, and he grew up on this planet, and doesn’t seem to show any sort of emotional imbalance. Second, he’s too strong. Way too strong. There’s practically no one that can beat him besides Batman, and magic users, and even then there are points where he stomps them as well. Hell, even characters that have been stated to be able to kill him simply never kill him because he’s too strong. There’s no tension there because in the end, Superman will always win. I’m not saying he’s the worst super hero or character, and I respect those who like him. Hell, I liked him as a super hero at one point so much I’d actively look for comic books about Superman. However, I won’t ignore his faults.

Of course he was simple. All characters were simple back then, that's why development exists, and no, he's been beaten even WHEN he was still basking in sunlight. *cough* Doomsday *cough*. "Too fast for magic", He's been hit before. "He's the strongest Superhero in the Universe" Well, Wally is the fastest, and you've seen all the shit he can do with the Speed Force, why not talk about how much of a bad character he is? Oh no, wait a minute, it would just boil down to "He's too fast". Relatability? You want to talk about relatability? For the "Mann of a Thousand Thoughts", you sure shirk when it comes to proper research. He's human. He may be more powerful than any human, but he's still human. The struggle isn't about his power, it's about his heart. It's about if he's doing the right thing at the end of the day. Yes, but his Heat Vision exhausts his Solar energy reserves faster than any other ability. Yes, but he WOULDN'T destroy the planet. It's not what he CAN do, it's what he WOULD do. I'm pretty sure all of the JL were near defeated in that story, it was required. Nothing was stopping Metallo from finishing the job, minus the arrogance. "There's no ticking time bomb, Superman's just fast enough to be there". Injustice, next point. Also, is this video just going to be about his abilities, not any of the stories that were actually shit? Aw man, I was looking forward to this guy ignoring the good ones. "Now that Superman's the strongest man alive, and the fastest man alive", HAHAHAHAH. Adorable. He's lost most of the Flash races. His most recent one? Wally was holding back. Remember that panel where he sped ahead. Exactly. He fails as a character because he's relatable? Tell me this, Mann. Is Batman relatable? Is he really? OH YES! What is a video trashing Superman without somebody mentioning GOKU. That Bullet point is marked. By the way, Superman DID train. With Mongul the 2nd. He trained in two Kryptonian Martial arts. As you saw from that DB. Since you want to claim that some of your info came from that. Clark has real issues too. God, I love it when these people just ignore CLARK as a whole, CLARK is the true character. Not Superman. Remember in All-Star Superman when (Spoiler ahead for those that haven't read it) Pa Kent died? When that time monster devoured 3 minutes of his life, and in those three minutes, Pa Kent had a heart attack? Did he not mourn like a Human? "I didn't even get to say Goodbye."

I used to hate Superman as well but when I looked into all star Superman my mind was changed completely and I developed a huge respect for him after that. The only two abilities that are different from others are the heat vision (which is so inconsistent in power scaling) and his frost breath. That’s basically nothing compared what other heroes can do who have flight, super speed etc. they can do more than what he can do yet he wins because “hope” which is just bs bcoz writers need to realise that sometimes for some situations, there is no fucking hope

The problem is that Superman has been around so long that few if anyone alive today can remember a time when he didn't exist, therefore they're so used to his antics that they don't even notice how bad Superman is and even try to defend it. - Superman is overpowered. As mentioned in this video for decades they would not only give him more and more powers they would scale up the powers he already has. Even when they do scale Superman back down they start jacking him up again. The vast majority of other superheroes just get a set of powers and after maybe a few years of giving some weird nonsense the good ones solidify and the superhero sticks with those and at those levels the rest of their career. The problem with Superman isn't that he's powerful it's that he's TOO powerful for the threats he regularly comes up against. Give Superman villains and consistently put him up against those villains that not only can play the typical villain mind games but can beat him in a straight fight without pulling out a green glowing rock and Superman would get a lot better as a character. Have Superman have to THINK around his opponents instead of just power he way over them with the set powerset he'll have and Superman would take his rightful place among the greatest superheroes ever. - Usually, when you try to point this out fans will bring up the fact that villains can threaten his friends and loved ones instead or that "good Superman Superman stories are about his heart". Really it's just passing the buck to avoid acknowledging how terrible a character Superman really is. Just about every other superhero does exactly the same thing, has their loved ones threatened and have heartfelt storylines and they all work infinitely better because they are no so powerful that they wreck the story like Superman does. It's not that a being with godlike power can't be related to, it's that when there's nobody who can even come close to matching them and thus take them down a few pegs.

10:53 This is where I have a big problem with this because if you direct it towards any other character, it doesn’t work. Most people don’t find relatable in fights we can’t even dream of doing the stuff any fiction combat oriented character can do. Naruto isn’t relatable because he stomps out Kakazu or when Goku beats the mess out of the Ginyu Force. Naruto is relatable because he’s an orphan who practically had no one in his life, but he’s still determined to prove himself in the face of that. We can relate to that because at some point or another we as humans have gone through grief, death, and the struggle to get hope in the darkest of worlds. These are similar traits that represent Superman. He struggles with connecting with his loved ones, always having to constantly lie to them in order to keep up that secret identity. He feels aliens because he eventually learns that he’s not human through the use of acquiring his powers and seeing the messages his parents left for him in his space pod. He struggles with the death of not only his parents but the death of his entire planet, a family and planet he never got to know. Anyone who's been adopted or lost their parents can relate to this. People forget Superman grew up human to human parents that taught him the value of honesty and hope, which is a big factor in Superman’s story. He doesn’t really get his powers until late in his life when he’s already working at the Daily Planet and even then it's not as if he controls them right off the bat. He struggled to fly and to use his heat vision for the first time around. (Certain depictions have him learn it younger, but in the main backstory of Superman, he gets them in his late 20s). As for the combat,t the case of “he’s unbeatable is a flat out lie” His main rogues' gallery are people who either use his weaknesses against him or are on par with him (Lex, Metallo, Darkseid, Doomsday, General Zod) for other threats and even the likes of Darkseid and Doomsday and Brainiac he needs the other Leagues or people from outside of the leagues help in order to beat them‌. This proves he’s not infallible. Superman does train, quite a lot actually. He trains to master and control his abilities so that they don’t go rampant. He trains both mind, body and soul to become the best there is. He learns several martial arts and boxing from his father at a young age and countless other people he’s trained and battled with. Superman is what we all strive to be, a hardworking diligent man with a moral compass that pales in comparison to most of humanity. He is a beacon of hope and the light in the darkness. Belief and hope are things that motivate humans on a day to day basis and is what keeps us striving for newer heights. The reason I don’t like this argument is that he paints it as if Superman is this lazy person who does try on anything and is always handed things to him when that couldn't be further from the case. Even when loses his powers (which is on several occasions for various reasons) he still tries to help people even if his life is on the line. That to me is what makes a superhero. He doesn’t “remember” he has abilities that are powers that took time to learn and adapt to as control so that he doesn’t hurt the people around him. This argument starts to fall apart really badly when he says “he was born that way” So by your logic, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, and the loads of other superheroes that are born with their abilities aren’t relatable. Goku isn’t reliable because he was born a saiyan who are predisposed to a largely amount of attack power and ki generation than other races to the point where he is the planet's best martial artist at the age of 8 to when he becomes a teenager to the point where he beats a demon alien that said he was going to destroy the world. And the argument that superman just gets his powers and that’s I already debunked. And that’s where I go back to overpowered is subjective because normal for dragon ball from the end of OG to Super is being able to blow up the planet casually.The normal people argument doesn’t work cause that’s few and far between as kid Goku outclasses master roshi (The planet’s best martial artist aside from the leader of Dragon School) once he learns and masters kamehameha ( a technique he learns just by looking at it once and shown to be able to blow up the moon.) I knew he was going to mention Saitama at some point because people think he’s just immune to the same type of criticism because he’s Saitama. I’ve already stated Superman trained as well but using your logic Saitama isn’t relatable because he doesn’t face a single threat to the point that at the end of S1 the one guy that we thought would have been able to beat him finds out he wasn’t trying at all during the fight. Him doing “basic exercises'' to be able to beat people and enemies in a single punch isn’t relatable or something people can aspire to. A youtube athlete tried his “basic exercise routine" and found out human’s can’t run 10km everyday for 3 years. It literally gave him lacerations in his tissue and that amount of strain on the bone could potentially shatter his foot. And everyone on earth doesn’t exercise and train their body. That can be relatable to some people but not everyone. Keep in mind after he reaches a certain level of power Saitama literally stops training, like he quit. The arguments he goes on to make literally apply to Saitama as well but Superman is the bad character here. See how hypocritical that is. Saitama and Superman’s relatability don’t come from their strength or their power. It’s what they chose to do with their power and how it affects them as human beings. Saitama’s struggle comes not from the people he fights but what it means to be a hero and what does someone do after achieving their goal. These are key parts of Saitama and OPM’s story as a whole. It’s the reason he paints himself as a villain whenever the lower ranking heroes are being disrespected, he steals the spotlight and makes himself look like the bad guy so that the ones who actually put their lives on the line for other people like Mumen Rider. King and Saitama are two sides of the same coin in this regard. King gets praised for work he didn’t do while Saitama gets insulted for stealing the spotlight in order to make other people look good rather than himself. We learn from his conversation with King that after he gets his powers and achieves his goal he becomes depressed because he sees it as having nothing else to live for. It’s also the reason he looks for strong opponents to fight, so that he may feel something, anything again. King advises him to find what it means to be a hero in his own right because he has yet to do that for himself which is why he always says “He’s just a hero for fun.” Saitama, Superman and loads of other heroes act as symbols, they are proof that power doesn’t corrupt and it depends on who's using it. They carry the burdens so we may not. They are our heroes, protectors. We relate to Superman’s struggle most of all because he is a man with the same human problems we all go through. He chooses to be a protector and a hero despite being a man who could do whatever he wants. So basically he is the greatest Superhero of all Time P.S: The rest of his points I’ve already discussed and debunked or provided a counterargument. Largely this video suffers from not understanding the character, confusing one subject with another or misunderstanding the subject discussed, and hypocrisy. This is the first and last time I ever write a youtube comment but I’m really passionate about this sort of thing.

There are people in real life that have strong morals and sacrifice themselves for a greater good that don't have superpowers. The problem is, those kinds of people are not the average person, so most average people see Superman as unrelatable. Most myths and religions have exemplars or prophets that are there to inspire average people to above average thoughts and deeds. The intention is not to expect every person to be a prophet or exemplar, but to effectively aim high to rise above whatever level they are at now, even if that level starts very low. If you surround yourself with examples that are your current level and lower, then the only way is down.

So the problem is the character has abilities, you don't look at the best runs of the character which are about him not using his abilities and what he stands for, your sun problem is right out stupid, his abilities come from the solar radiation yes, but he has other weaknesses, if you look at his strength yes he's very strong he's not dr manhattan powers, yes maybe over the years he has had stupid abilities, but over 80 years that's bound to happen, different creative minds are gonna do different things, then let's look at no one can fight him, darkseid, lobo, brainiac, anti monitor etc. Yes he is unstoppable at some points but because of him being clark kent he wouldn't and you have clearly missed this, his relatability comes from his duality as Clark Kent, which makes perfects sense, take the recent run of superman where he struggles to be superman and a parent, he is completely relatable, take smallville about him growing up, take man of steel the modernisation of being an outsider, you have completely missed the point, our best selves is what superman represents, the belief of superman, the fastest man alive, no thats the flash, your whole analysis is just wrong, people do go through the struggles of parenthood, growing up, grief, his grief of losing a parent, these are relatable things you missed the point of superman to the point of where your analysis is damn right stupid

Reasons why Superman is not a good character: 1. He's way too overpowered which means that the writers have to resort to a character that is so op that he shouldn't be able to beat him (yet he still wins) using kryptonite but only for like 1 second and then he has to rely on batman which is annoying because batman already gets enough attention (and batman is literally one of my favorite characters) And 2. He turns evil in too many stories just so the writers can give batman more screen time, take injustice for example, he kills shazam over wanting to kill criminals, this Is something that isn't part of his character, and if they weren't trying to make superman purposely stupid he would have just found a way to revive them, like Lazarus pit, some random god, white lantern ring?, ect Oh and also 3. he's way too unreleatable, he pretty much has the perfect life and is the perfect person so when he loses the viewers are like: HOW? and if he wins, well it doesn't matter , he's superman he's obviously winning (unless he's fighting batman for fanseriv e) This is why I think starfire (comparing him to starfire because their races and powers are pretty similar) Is a better character, even though she's a alien we see that she has struggles fitting in with humans at first, she's not the perfect superhero, and that's what makes starfire a better hero: she's can relate to not fitting in and since she's powered by positivity it's easier for her to emphathize with humans (and probably the other excuse that the writers use to make superman evil)

Hey, I know this is a 7-year-old video and largely know one cares at this point but I wanted to give my cheap 2 cents on the subject since I quite enjoy character analysis and what makes a character (Both physiologically and as a budding writer). I'll start by listing point by point each claim and argument made from beginning to end and my thoughts and counterarguments to each. 1:00 Alright, my first issue with this point is that this isn’t really an issue both from a fiction standpoint and a realistic one. The argument that one reason Superman is a bad character (I’m gonna be referring to superheroes as characters as one of his big arguments is the reliability of Superman rather than his actual superheroing) as a whole is because he gains powers isn’t a good one because that applies to almost every character ever written. People don’t call Naruto (I’m gonna be referring to manga characters as analogies a lot in this as manga are comics just from the eastern culture with district yet similar disparities) a bad character because he gains different abilities such as rasengan, shadow clone, and access to Kurama’s chakra. That’s called progression and advancement Batman does it (obviously not in the power sense but in the rest of his arsenal that he gains and builds over time). Hell, we as humans literally do it. We went from riding on horse carriages to cars to being able to go into space. Other points he makes, such as the solar system sneeze, largely can be attributed to the era in which these sorts of comics are made as well as the context of the comic itself. Even Batman before he got his Dark Knight backstory and became the brooding caped vigilante we know and love was just a regular person in a suit (Like not even a billionaire) that does wacky ridiculous things with the Boy Wonder. The Golden Age was more forced on creating fun comics than any too serious or refined, like the comics we have now. Even in the scan, he presents like the shooting a miniature person out of his hands is explained in that comic. He came in contact with an alien ship and, using their technology, he could project a smaller version of himself. It’s the reason he doesn’t use this power again. A lot of these points fall apart when you compare it to other characters that aren’t Superman. Saitama (granted this was before these issues of the manga were released) literally sneezes Jupiter away casually during his fight with Garou. 1:59 The Crisis on Infinite Earths event wasn’t because of the writers needing to fix Superman or his powers. It’s an event where practically all of DC is fighting the Anti-Monitor with the help of the Monitor, resulting in a lot of deaths. In the end the entire DC Universe gets reset and they made a lot of changes throughout DC. Wonder Woman’s entire original origin gets altered, and she’s even weakened from the bringing to the point of not even being able to fight a bear, surviving on pure muscle memory. This was largely due to the problem of having too many earths and largely the same characters (As in having 4 different Supermans that differed from one another) that they sought to rectify this.

You repeat all these negative things about Superman, like, "He's not human, he's has too much powers, he's not relatable." But what I like about Superman is that he has all these cool superpowers, but he chooses not to be the Villain. He chooses to do good, he has morals, knows what's right and wrong. He's an outcast who was adopted and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent, who taught Superman to be Human. Superman is human in every way. I glad God gave the idea to Jerry and Joe. Don't know why people really despise Superman. It's shallow to me. All Superman was meant for is entertainment.
@immortalfrieza
@immortalfrieza 4 жыл бұрын
Uh... every other particularly powerful superhero is the exact same way. Massive powerful, and yet deciding to use those powers to do good and has morals, several of them are even outcasts. It's passing the buck. There is absolutely nothing positive about Superman that countless other superheroes don't do just as well if not better. In fact, because Superman is so insanely overpowered he is completely incapable of presenting a good story. Villains can attack Superman's heart but not his body, which kills any and all dramatic tension. There are other superheroes that are roughly as powerful as Superman is and have grown more and more powerful over the years like say The Hulk, but the villains he fights keep pace with Hulk, which allows the dramatic tension to be present. Superman just gets more and more powerful and unlike other superheroes his villains consistently fail to measure up. Villains have to take out a green glowing rock to even being to harm Superman, and sometimes even that doesn't work.
