There is also the concept of China. Where the lands we call China is this vaguely defined, ever changing area of East Asia. We have unified periods of the Zhou, Han, Tang, etc. and then there are the splits like the Warring States, Three Kingdoms, etc. Take the Three Kingdoms, each Liu, Sun, and Cao all claimed to be the emperor (which there can only be one and all others are illegitimate). In the minds of those people, there one China (or just everything under heaven as they'd likely say) but it's just been split between 3 different occupied regions waiting to become whole again.

Technically, Christians, Islam, Judaism were all legal in China for centuries already by that time. It's the same process --- they send an envoy bearing some gifts, find their way into the Chinese capitol of the time, request a meeting with the emperor on behalf of their country, the emperor sees them, they talk about how much their religion is a force that aligns with Chinese philosophy and is a force to make people happier, the emperor listens, think about it, nods, and orders them a obelisk that basically says "this religion is legal". And they can then practice whatever they practice, so long as it obeys Chinese law of course. All three Abrahamic religions did that, hundreds of years before Hong Xiuquan. Didn't really have too much problem up until the very Chinese law itself was weakened due to all those invasions.

The Middle Kingdom has always been able to get back on its feet. In the end the greatest threat to China will always be itself. The times of greatest peril in China has been when it was fragmented, as the Chinese have the bloodiest civil wars ever. Whenever China unites it has always been a superpower. The Chinese know that and that is why they support a United China under a strong militaristic government like the CCP.

Well when you actually look at it from a historical lens there is no surprise that china bounced back. It has balkanized dozens of times suffered foreign conquests from mongols and manchu's and endured through massive famines. Yet it has always recovered and maintained its chinese identity for 2000 years. These recent events around 100 years ago were no different. China's centralization, geography and demographics basically guarantees China's survival and place as a regional/world power.

One detail you didn't touch upon which is important, is that until the early 90s the ROC was ruled by a military dictatorship, which very much continued the goal of taking mainland China. the Taiwanese identity developed way earlier than that, but it wasn't officially recognized until 90s, "officially recognized" meaning you can tell people you think you are Taiwanese without being arrested and punished by the ROC government in Taiwan, before the 90s, you dare say you're Taiwanese, you can be arrested and possibly beat to death, even though you indeed was born and live in Taiwan

The ROC, or Taiwan, literally was China after the dynasty period, but they got exiled because of a civil war between the nationalist Kuomintang and the communist party. The communist party pushed back the Kuomintang or the ROC by capturing more land. The Kuomintang retreated to Taiwan, ultimately losing control of the mainland to the Communist party which then resulted to the Communist party becoming the PRC. The ROC was internationally recognized to be the legitimate Chinese government for a while after being exiled, but the PRC having control over the mainland and more resources eventually led to it being the legitimate internationally recognized government.

@@PixelKonny64 Because there's a large standing army on the other side of the strait ready to go to war if Taiwan ever officially declares independence. The current status quo benefits both Taiwan and Mainland China economically, so neither side is willing to push their boundaries to actually disrupt it. The ROC government knows that declaring independence is a death sentence, and the PRC knows that war would be economically disastrous. That's why the furthest that the ROC government will go is criticism of the PRC, and the furthest the PRC will go is military exercises along the Taiwan Strait.

I once read that George RR Martin was giving advice to aspiring writers on how to train their world-building ability, and advised against writing fan fictions based on Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings universes and of course, his own Game of Thrones universe. That's true; world building from scratch is hard, and of course even his own universe is not entirely made up but based on world history as well, like War of the Roses, the wall based on Hadrian's walls, the wildlings represents celts and Dothrakis representing Mongols and Turks, and the sparrows being inspired by the Boxers' rebellion, which I guess would make Cersei based on Cixi (the names even sound similar). Supposedly, Hong Xiuquan encountered some Christian missionaries in Guangzhou and was later suffering from a fever; in his feverish delirium he dreamt up his godly lineage as well his 'mission'. It would be interesting if he weren't sick and had the time and imagination to build up his own cult and founding myth from scratch. If a cult based on a foreign religion could have so much influence and cause such damage in China, imagine what might've if he came up with a more Chinese-like religion.

It’s out of the order presented in the video, but Japan did take Shandong from Germany after WWI. The Chinese were ticked off and signed a separate peace with Germany instead of signing onto Versailles since they didn’t want to recognize this. The US (and somewhat Britain/France) pressured Japan into surrendering it back to China just a few years later as part of The Washington Naval Treaties. It’s part of what alienated Japan from its former wartime allies.

When you talk about Chingghis Khagan, you should understand before he was born, there were many Chinese Dynasties that ruled parts or all of (Outer and Inner)Mongolia. Chingghis Khagan's Mongols was formerly a vassal of Jin Dynasty as well. Chingghis Khagan even at his death still never finished off the weakest of the three, Western Xia Dynasty, the only achievement in his China conquest was his conquest of Western Liao Dynasty or Kara Khitai which was located in Central Asia and was already usurped by Kuchlug of Turkic Naiman tribe. And it took the Mongols four Great Khagan (Chingghis, Ogodai, Guyuk, Mongke), the entire empire's resources, and Yuan Emperor (Kublai) with the massive help of the Chinese defectors to bring down the disunited and crumbling Chinese Dynasties that had been fighting and killing each other in virtually non-stop battles and wars that had been happening for 2 to 3 centuries. Not to mention those massive rebellions and natural disasters that happened on the eve and during the Mongol invasions. And to make thing worse, they even allied with the Mongols to bring down one another, it still took the Mongols and the Yuan with all their resources the total of roughly 3 quarter of a century to finish the conquest. Compared to fighting the corrupted, declining and crumbling China, the conquest of those islamic sultanates, caliphates, those europeans, and Russian kingdoms by the Mongols certainly a cake walk most of the time. Their resources put into western conquest was miniscule by comparison.

But how to avoid war there? It's not small country like Syria or Libya, where America can just tame them. And its not like china will give it up that easily as it's written in their constitution. Even more dangerous is they are just sucidal, they even brawl with entire UN and USA with just medieval weapons during the Korean war.. And last thing, Entire world economy is dependent on china in today's world.

people in Taiwan nowadays identified themselves more as Taiwanese rather than Chinese, and therefore, anything that has to do with ROC, people generally just don't want to be part of it, except KMT party, the party that founded ROC and came from China to Taiwan. Even though its president still claim herself as ROC Taiwan's president, but we all know ROC doesn't exist anymore as official China, the official China is called the PROC, only KMT party still insist that ROC is the one and only China. Whoever becomes the president of ROC, can only rule Taiwan, doesn't matter if they called themselves the president of Taiwan or ROC or ROC Taiwan.

If I remember it correctly, the PRC has even adopted a law saying they have to declare war on Taiwan if it ever declares independence. Otherwise, Taiwan is absolutely factually an independent nation, and that is unofficially recognised by pretty much everybody. They even have a lot of embassies everywhere, they’re just called “representative offices”. So basically: Taiwan: I’m China PRC: No I’m China Taiwan: Fine, so I’m Taiwan PRC: NO YOU ARE CHINA

You might want to update your info. Taiwan dropped their claim to Mongolia 2 decades ago... I was living there when they actually officially changed their maps. It isn't complicated. The government of Taiwan, was the government of mainland China. They lost the civil war vs the communists. They fell back to Taiwan...the only territory that the government still controlled. They have hoped to re-invade and reclaim Mainland China. They actually offered troops to the UN, early on in the Korean War......the offer rejected since the UN command didn't think they'd be able to keep Taiwanese troops from invading the Mainland. But yes, I was surprised when the color of Mmongolia change on mas made in Taiwan...no longer the same color as Taiwan

They changed the map, they haven't changed their constitution. Mongolia is still officially territory of Republic of China
