the hardest thing about portraying teens in media is that is almost impossible to depict their generation faithfully, since there will always be the paradox of: adults of the last generation viewing them vs their generation not being concluded yet to based a narrative uppon

It's gone girl it's the Joker it's the anti-hero moment. What's terrifying about teen girl movies is that even though we had TV icons like Ashley Banks, Laura Winslow, Vanessa Huxtable, Tia and Tamera, Moesha, Kyla Pratt and Raven Baxter, their popularity never translated to the big screen. That's VERY scary!

Personally, I think that characters like Raven Baxter and Buffy Summers were written for two different audiences. Raven is meant for younger tween girls (ages 8-14-ish), while Buffy is written for more mature fans (13+). I think that we've been aging girls up for a long time. You'll note that content for tween girls is so limited and short-lived nowadays. Shows like Raven, Hannah Montana, and Sister Sister don't exist in the same sense anymore. That silly, awkward tween girl phase has been replaced by Sephora Girls and the world of onling aesthetics and trends. Young girls now go from watching Disney Princesses to watching Stranger Things, and that whimsical in-between is gone. Characters like Raven Baxter and Lizzie McGuire weren't large-scale sensations in part because girls outgrew them and moved on to characters like Buffy and Regina George. And because those characters were geared for older audiences, people followed them for a lot longer. While Raven was able to make a comeback as an adult for new and old audiences, Lizzie did not have that same success because the character couldn't be reasonably aged up without losing what originally made her charming. I think it's really easy to get a cult following for adult audiences because adults tend to stick with the shows they love while having money to spend on merchandise and other related items, while kids move through phases (Things like Disney Princesses are a rare exception). I think it's only been recently that the kids who watched shows like Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly place are starting to return to them with their own children in tow, which is why we're starting to see revivals of some of them. That being said, I don't think they will ever be elevated to the same level as Buffy or Charmed simply because those shows were made for the kind of audience that sticks around. The adults who are currently watching That's so Raven with their 10 year olds will move on to watching Buffy in a few years, and the tween girls will be left in the past again.

While the themes of "Heathers" still hold up incredibly well, the creators of the short lived 2018 series found out the hard way that depicting teenagers killing their classmates, and passing them off as suicides, nor bringing guns to school, don't work as well in a post Columbine environment.

To all you preteens and teenage girls, Yes, everything is kind of weird right now. Yes, your body is physically showing signs of maturing. Yes, your hormones are acting petty. Yes, you’re starting to possibly seeing the world differently. All these things are overwhelming BUT DON’T YOU DARE allow someone to make you think you’re “scary” or put you in some sort of box. You’re growing in an age where information to everything that’s happening is available. Got your first period? Yes, freak out because AAAAAH!! But also be sure you know what that means. Talk to your mothers or trusted older females in life. Don’t have that? Health department, school nurse, or even Google. It’s not a “dirty thing”; it’s a natural phenomenon that happens to us and there is nothing to be ashamed about. Your hormones are just chemical reactions to your body physically changing. You will learn quickly how to spot PMS symptoms. Read about Toxic Shock Syndrome I know parents just don’t understand but in reality, they do. There is a good chance they aren’t trying to ruin your life lol. They just see things from a more experienced point of view. When you become an adult, out of the house, and living your own life…you’ll get it. PLEASE educated yourself on sexual health. PLEASE. You’ll probably experience sexual attention from boys your age and/or adult men (unfortunately). With adult men, that shit is wrong and tell on him. With boys your age, sometimes they can be ruthless. Don’t give in to peer pressure, you hear me? Again, don’t give in to peer pressure that could harm you in anyway. Trust me, being “cool” isn’t what you think it is . The “cool” students you know now? Yeah some of what they are doing will have them either strung up, in prison, or dead as an adult. Study up on sexual assault and harassment. Learn how to self care. Example: drink lots of water! Get to know your body! A good example would be performing self breast exams. The word “NO” is a complete sentence. If you have friends that downgrade you or make you feel inadequate on purpose, they aren’t your friends. Genuinely sticking up for yourself isn’t aggressive and you’re not being hysterical. The person attacking you is the aggressive one. Your sexual identity is starting to bloom and that is very intense. And for those that aren’t straight, you will probably have some backlash. Unfortunately, it could come from your own family and friends. I’m straight but I’m a Black American; we are two peas in a pod when it comes to discrimination. Stay strong and if you think coming out will be better when you’re OUT of your home then…okay but don’t be in the closet forever. If you are being told at home or at a faith based school that you should be submissive, only give birth, only raise children, and be blamed for any sexual advances because you’re a female…girl that’s abuse. Your parent and/or parent’s partner shouldn’t be making out with you, touching your body sexually, or making sexually charged comments about you. That’s abuse! It’s not your fault and they are WRONG. That’s all I can think of lol! I’m a 37 year old woman who knows what it is like. You’ll be alright if you allow yourself to be, okay? If you have people in your life that truly love you, lean on them for support. And most importantly, LOVE AND RESPECT YOURSELF!

I'm not a girl or woman or a teenager. But I love what you said. If only more adults were like you. I'm working on my first book, and the protagonist is a teen girl. She goes on an extraordinary and fantastic journey, representing her passage from childhood to adulthood, but she also makes great friends and companions along the way (all of them female btw, not technically human but still female, and who help her with her changes). Along the way, she embraces her idenity that she long suppressed, but embraces it with open arms and pride. She also stands up to creepy, sinister, magical and ageless Co-monarchs (a Mother and her son), who try to pressure her into being their shared "companion", but the heroine stands her ground, finds her inner strength, and openly rejects them.

I would recommend focusing in on a few concrete examples so that you could flush out your analysis more as you explore this idea further. For example Winona ryders character in heathers is not a budding serial killer. The other heathers and jd are a lot scarier. You also probably want to distinguish further between someone like Buffy and Nancy.

Teen girls are coming into their own and learning about their power and sexuality, that scares older people, so in part portraying them as scary it sends a message to surpress your power and sexuality.

I remember reading a book about aphrodite and venus and Ishtar and how the goddess has traveled and changed many times across history one interesting point was the theory as to why she is often depicted as a beautiful young woman, as the goddess of love and war (yes originally aphrodite held war god attributes before they were stripped to sanitize her and fit the greek mainlands ideal of femininity) anyway the depiction of an eternally young ever beautiful creature was almost fear inspiring something unnatural as it was magnificent and I think its so interesting to think how an ancient culture viewed eternal beauty as fearsome instead of something to aspire to

Although this idea is very complicated for a video analysis, I am semi-hoping that it'll be OK for an October video, basically the paradox, that is the virgin trope, long story short, the characters are either indestructible, or the most vulnerable for the plot(case in point any movie with the final girl, or they're the favorite targets of vampires, warlocks, or cults, with the twist of the non-vigin sacrifice becoming their undoing)
