In my opinion the best autumn / winter / early spring jacket. Works in a variety of temperatures, has perfect pocket placement and pocket size and has the perfect shape and length which makes it very comfortable to wear and be active in. The double layered back is a must as well because in colder temps your back stays warm and I believe this is very important.

I am a longtime Filson fan, but you nailed it on the sizing. Up to relatively recently they sold their jackets in regular suit jacket sizes like 36, 38, 40 and so on, and they were true to size. Now, an XS fits about like a 38R and a S is much bigger. Between an XS and S the sleeves get a whole inch longer! I wear a medium in most jackets like my older Carhartts, but I have to wear a Filson XS because their sizing is so crazy.

i have a US forest service one from the early 90s that somehow ended up in england, its been great. the map pocket means its double thickness across the entire back, so even if its not used, the extra material keeps you cosy

Wool is by far my favorite material and this is my all time favorite jacket. That being said I can totally feel wind cut through it sometimes so I've been looking into weatherwool and the iron snail because they are supposedly more wind resistant. Also I have a dark navy one and it really shows all the hair and stuff that sticks to it so I'd get a different colour I think. I really like the lynx pattern that weatherwool has.

I had bought two Filson bags on eBay. One bag had some wear and the zipper that ran the length of the bag was detached. I sent it to Filson, it could not be fixed, so they sent me a new bag. That was a deal. The other day I went to a new Goodwill and they had a jacket that at first looked like a Filson but was a vintage Evergreen lamb wool jacket instead. It was a size smaller than I usually wear it also had a lining of some sherpa material. It definitely was warm. I also liked that it had buttons and a zipper. It was only $15, now it’s my most worn jacket this winter. If it rains I have a raincoat that is longer but the Evergreen can work in a pinch. Now I’m worried about storing the jacket and keeping bugs from eating it after spring comes.

I like the review! I find the back map pocket useful for gloves or an umbrella. And the the back pocket adds another layer of wool making the jacket thicker with a double layer. I own it in XS and S in 2 colours. XS is more fitted (more like a North American small) and Small looks like it does on you (more like a Medium).

That back pocket isn't a map pocket. It was used by hunters to place pheasants in that they shot.

I prefer Pendleton cruiser over Filson. Pendleton jackets can be purchased 2nd hand for even cheaper, and they are the supplier of the wool for Filson.

On Johnson Woolen Mills: Most/all of their clothing is a wool/nylon blend, not 100% wool like Filson. I have a pair of Johnson pants they are great but they really don't hold a candle to Filson.

I disagree. This jacket is marketed as a "timber cruising" jacket, not a hunting jacket. Sure you can hunt in it but their dedicated hunting coats have a bigger and different style game bag. Filson even calls it a map pocket.

It ABSOLUTELY is a map pocket. Learn your Filson history. No one would put a bloody animal back there. Game pockets are ALWAYS lined with waterproof material.

It's a map pocket. The Cruiser was for Timber Cruisers. It wasn't originally intended for hunters.
