#Flash #Flop #Review
The movie bombed. It made less money than black Adam in its opening weekend, despite hype from cinemacon, celebrities, and the promise of a new universe. I want to talk about my thoughts on the movie, and why it bombed,and a little later I’m going to bring out two of the best, Matt Singer and Colton Ogburn, to get their thoughts on this movie.
I gotta say, I liked this movie, but it was overhyped. We had James Gunn saying it was one of his favorite superhero movies of all time, an array of celebrities giving it an early thumbs up, and even the raves I heard after Cinemacon made me really pumped to see this movie. I love Flash Comics, Love keaton batman, and I’m excited for a fresh take on the DC universe.
And this movie was good, but I would say it’s like an upper mid level marvel movie. Like it's better than the ant man movies and thor love and thunder but it’s no winter soldier, you know?
But for me it hits a lot better than most other DCEU movies. I would actually say its my second favorite DCEU film, just behind the Suicide squad. My full ranking is in the comments, let me know yours below. And also, thanks so much for always supporting our channel-if you like what we do here, check out our merch store with some fun flash parody shirts, like doug fetch shirt, be kind don't rewind, the Flesh zombie shirt, and doug says, you wanna play fetch, let's play fetch. Link is in the description below.
So, back to the flash. Let’s talk about what worked. Ezra Miller really did feel like two different characters in this. Barry and other Barry seamlessly interact together, and even if they had the same haircut you’d be able to tell them apart.
I always thought Barry was annoying as hell in both versions of the Justice league. Like the creators were trying to interject some marvel humor, but they cranked it up to 15, and the jokes rarely landed [clip]. But in this movie, the masterstroke was to introduce an even more annoying version of Barry, so I can transfer my hatred onto him. This makes our Barry seem almost normal by comparison.
But this also forced Our Barry to grow up, tobe the adult in the room. Like, the awkward guy getting a gross sandwich at the start of the movie feels very different from the guy who exonerates his dad at the end. The events of the movie change Barry, and allow him to grow as a person.
And it’s great to see a superhero movie where the hero has to learn a lesson about when not to use their power. Most of these movies are tights and fights that end with the hero beating up a bad guy. But in this movie, Barry is the bad guy. He has to overcome his own inadequacies-his own trauma-to save the day. That is so rare in any action movie. I feel like this movie graduated the DCEU’s Barry Allen into a full-fledged superhero, not just the Justice League's janitor.
And by the way everyone, if you like what we do here and you want to support out = chanel, thanks for checking out our merch store with the link below. We have awesome flash parody merch like….
And I guess we should talk about the elephant in the room-Ezra Miller. I don't like to comment on things like this, because I’m not a lawyer or a moral philosopher. There have been a lot of accusations,and some violent incidents caught on tape-and as far as I know, only two criminal charges actually filed: trespassing and second degree assault for throwing a chair at a woman.

Sexual assault is like the cardinal sin in humanity. If respected actors (like Bill Cosby & Kevin Spacey) or powerful industry players (like Harvey Weinstein) could not survive it, there's no chance Ezra Miller would.

Mix Ezra's struggles with a readiness by fans to move on from WB's craptastic handling of the Snyderverse overall and you have the reason that this movie flopped. Add that to the option to see it in a couple months on a streaming platform and you have the final nail in the coffin. It's nothing to do with what was actually in the movie because people didn't go out to see it in theaters. It's not Michael Keaton's fault. In fact, my guess is that most of the people that went to the theaters to see this movie went for his portrayal of Batman alone. When we finally have a James Gunn DC movie that WB hasn't had its hands on then you'll see DC rebound at the box office.

Many people that have certain issues with separating the artist from the art itself do so because their opinion is entangled with their ego and that informs what they can overall accept. I can enjoy movies with actors whom I think are d-bags same with watching sports or a lot of bands whose music I dig but the front man is a total asshat. My brother can't listen to most comedians because if he disagrees with them on a subject or two the the whole thing isn't funny he also can't watch football or baseball anymore or go to concerts because his opinion/ego can't handle dissent of his world view which I think is sad because he's choosing to be a brittle spirit in a much smaller world. I hope more people give this movie a chance despite Ezra because a lot of very good and talented people worked very hard and made something that's not perfect but it's a lot of fun with a lot of heart in it. Life is more fun with less of an ego.

There's at least 3 alternate endings including this Clooney one. There's the Keaton and supergirl one and Cavill supes, supergirl and Keaton one. Definitely will be in the ultimate edition, they definitely need to make their money back because the box office isn't going to come anywhere even close to the budget and marketing.

@davidhumphrey6239 10 ай бұрын
1000% agree. As much as I don't want to disparage Colton and his opinions, he came off as very "fanboyish" for the DCEU, and not very impartial in terms of presenting a movie review. The little criticism that he does offer is immediately offset with his fondness for the movie so I personally did not value his opinion at all. And he's crazy to think that Clooney would continue on as Batman, outside of being a fun cameo at the end of a movie. Kind of like the "Henry Cavill" Superman showing up at the end of Shazam. And people are still not sure if Shazam is part of the DCEU or not. As far as telling a multiversal storyline, there is no way this beats Across the Spiderverse explanation of the multiverse. I'm actually SMH with how Michael Keaton Batman explained the multiverse. It would have been just easier to say that the Flash was in another universe than to explain that he changed both the past and the future.

I think the reason they put George Clooney's Batman in the movie is that they are driving home the fact that the Flash created all the offshoot universes that contain all the different Batmen and Supermen through the events of the movie. Every time he went back, another timeline was created with different causality. The Flash and the events in this movie is why the Clooney Batman is different than Keaton, and Kilmer even though we are told they are the same Batman. Flash did it all behind the scenes of those movies in this one..

The post credit, Barry tells Arthur that he's been through multiple universes/timelines and that there were different "Batmen" in everyone, but Aquaman was always the same (yet he didn't even exist in the first alternate timeline). To me, that implies that Barry has traveled more timelines post-court scene and now he is in one where the justice league has yet to form. And now he's the one trying to get the band together like Bruce did in the original one. Thus, the Clooney reveal could have been a one-off, and there is going to be a completely different, unrevealed Bruce Wayne in this new timeline.

The focus on nostalgic cameos reminded me of Space Jam 2, which wanted to showcase how many popular properties that Warner Bros. had access to. During the basketball game, the audience was made up of various characters you would never think you'd see standing next to each other, like King Kong, Danny DeVito's Penguin, Pennywise from Stephen King's It, and the Jetsons. It was absurd and you can tell it was designed to make millenials in movie theaters point and shout at the screen "Hey, that's so and so!" I watched the Flash with my wife and son and pointed at the screen when Keaton showed up, George Reeves, Adam West, Christopher Reeve, and Nick Cage appeared, and when George Clooney walked up at the end. I immediately told my son the background information on all these cameos because he had no idea who they were or what they were referencing.

DC is a mess… But we all know this bombed because of they “Elephant in the room”. The fact that DC didn’t seriously consider that what Ezra was doing off-screen would heavily impact fans supporting the film is mind boggling. That compounded with how the studio handled Ezra and Amber’s off-screen trials with NO real consequences for their films (respectively). While Jonathan Majors lost both his PR Agency and manager after his charges… seems like a hollyweird double standard???
@JayGC

I don’t believe that’s the reason this bombed at all. I think it’s a factor for sure. But there’s also ‘superhero fatigue’ as people say. There’s the fact people are just tired of DC. The Flash hasn’t amassed a group of fans in the couple of things he’s been in. There’s the fact none of this really means anything because of the Gunnverse around the corner. People taking their kids to see a movie probably have no idea who Ezra Miller is. I can tell you now if an actor I really like had been committing crimes I’d still go out and see the new film they’re in. Short of any really horrific crimes obviously.

I THINK that Clooney's Batman was a sign that Ezra's stuck in that timeline, and the DCU gets a new Flash when appropriate. However, I would not be upset if Clooney got to play a serious older Batman, as Nghtwing would then be near Superman's age, and likely to be the official "Batman" of the DCU. We could also see the Dick/Damien interactions as well, as there should be some resentment between Damien and the first Robin.

When Barry put the can of tomatoes on the top shelf, the can was black. Originally the can was green, so now he is in an alternate timeline from the one with Ben Affleck as Batman. When young Barry dies here, old Barry can stay because his mother is alive. This removes the flash entirely from the Affleck Batman universe we still have. That clears up having to recast Ezra, he would not exist in the Snyder universe. The post credit with Aqua Man pushes this further showing our Barry Allen is in a different time line.

The second, was having Keaton willing to come back as Batman... And missing the opportunity to have a Tim Burton lead Batman beyond movie. Overall, it wasn't a bad movie... But they tried to shoehorn way too many different concepts in without really committing to them. They mangled the flashpoint series into something almost unrecognizable... And if this was supposed to be the current version of the dceu's swansong, then they left it way too open.

VFX were bothering me way more outside of the scenes you described. And with this heavy reliance on vfx in almost every movie nowadays, you can’t just simply overlook these things. Look at how wobbly the flash’s suit looks in almost every shot in the movie, especially the opening act, where it would matter most to really set the stage and convince the viewer of top quality. The scene where both flashes and Kara slide into frame looks just so bad. Everybody always picks on the CW and their bad vfx because of the low budget, but really this was just like that. Always try to remember how awesome the first iron man looked. That was 15 years ago. Feels like it’s only getting worse and I don’t blame the vfx teams. They are overworked as we know (and as we all are by the way). Studios must really find their way back to quality over quantity.

I remember that reset/reboots through time travel in the comics, if used correctly, still kept the story going and kept me engaged. More often than not however, it's used as a device for when writers write themselves into a wall. This is what I'm seeing used by Studios now with the "multiverse". It can be done correctly and with care but more often than not, it's abused as a way to just create threads that don't connect or leave fans frustrated. I do believe the Clooney cameo, like what others have said, could've been used to help exit Miller's Flash from the new setup that Gunn's DCEU.

I just saw this today and I really liked this. Not sure what the new universe they are establishing unless Aquaman end scene is saying he is the Aquaman in every universe and we are getting a different Superman. Ezra did a heck of job playing 2 characters. I didn’t realize he had the dramatic chops. I nearly tested up when he said hello and goodbye to his mother. I get the moral dilemma with Ezra just hope he gets help. I will buy on 4K. I didn’t have a problem with the CGI they should have showed as many DC connected universes as possible and a CW nod. I really liked this movie.

The baby shower scene represents an exponential version of the problem with flash/Superman/Spider-Man/Ironman saving anyone. Most adult humans would be crushed or have their backs and/or necks broken by being caught at Mach 3 by a super hero. Babies can’t control the motion of their own heads. Every one of them is dead.

8:40 Disagree. Supergirl was important for the plot. Without her, Zod had no codex to come for and she nerfed "The kryptonian traitor" so that Barry not being able to win in any scenario made sense. Otherwise Superman not being able to defeat Zod in so many trials wouldn't be justified.

The movie was actually good, if people had set aside personal dislike for the lead and the Superman swap and I think this would’ve been a box office hit. Not DCs best work but certainly much better than being a flop. Honestly probably Batman v Superman worthy

It seemed pretty obvious that making that change would have no impact on the past and would only impact the present. I am also thinking that ending was a fun way to close out the Ezra Miller Flash in a different multiverse as the fulcrum couldn't be fully repaired once broken. I also think the studio didn't want to say if Ezra continues or doesn't continue in the new DCU.

it kinda seems like leaving Ezra's Flash in the movie, along with Clooney and Momoa, makes a lot of sense with the 'Barry learned nothing' feel of the end. Like, he screwed up again and is now trying to do what he was doing before, getting the group back together, but now Aquaman clearly isn't up for it. Frankly, I think they cheaped out on the VFX and had some studio changes, and no one really expected this to succeed with a wide audience.

My opinion on Kenton’s Batman in this movie, is that it was an homage to the Burton movies, but also an homage to Flashpoint Paradox (which a good chunk of this story is coming from) Batman. In that universe, Batman was Thomas Wayne and he drank a lot and carried guns. In both the comic storyline and the animation. I was honestly waiting for him to reveal that he was actually Thomas Wayne.

I so wanted that, and honestly it would have been way better. But I guess they thought it would have been too confusing for the general audiences. A great alternative would have been to actually do Thomas Wayne Batman with Jeffrey Dean Morgan

What's even sillier than Clooney showing up is this...Clooney's Batman/Bruce Wayne is technically the same Batman/Bruce as Keaton's. Clooney is the second person to take over Keaton's portrayal of batman. So, how can Clooney show up if he's technically Keaton?
@Phase52012

Why it flopped. It was all over the place. The storyline was limp. They brought back ‎Michael Keaton as Batman, gave him some "trailer lines" to say and killed him off. They brought in Sasha Calle as supergirl who just seems to pop up in the movie before being killed off 3 or 4 times, then it ends with George Clooney as Bruce Wayne; which confused me for a moment until I remembered he'd done one of those awful batman movies back in 97. Do these film makers even have a script before they start. It's like the film a bunch of barely related scenes and then try and glue it all together to make a film, only to find out it's full of holes.
