Danny, please react to Ronja the Robber’s Daughter. It’s an amazing “anime” that a criminally small amount know about. The main character is a Irish/Scottish girl who goes through some shit. I think you would LOVE the show and it really deserves more attention.

Do you think the Incredibles is a conservative/libertarian film? there are people who believe this with these details A. the Parrs reject new ways of schooling B. Guns/superheroes were removed for "safety" reasons only to raise crime statistics and C. Elastigirl is characterized as a feminist who ends up getting wed off to a straight man as a traditional housewife/mother and is shown to be better off that way.

The scene where Helen was telling her children that those soldiers wouldn't hesitate to kill them hits really hard for me. Most parents try to hide those facts from their children. Helen was brutally honest with her children because she knew that they needed to understand the gravity of the situation and survive.

I remember not knowing how to feel watching that moment as a kid because I felt like she was being a bit "much", but now that I'm older I see that her telling her kids right then and there the cold hard facts of the situation so they'd take that seriously was only for their own good and she was doing that shit to protect her kids. Being honest was the only real way to protect her kids in that situation, and it's great they made Helen express that.

I remember my mom saying that almost exact line to me when I was younger. She and my dad never tried to sugar coat most things in life so I wouldn't be hit too hard as I grew up. This doesn't mean I didn't have a childhood, (tho I kinda didn't for other reasons) I just wasn't so into the childhood illusion of rainbows and sunshine to ignore the real world. Tho this did cause some problems I'm grateful for what they did.

Rewatching the first incredibles around the time the 2nd one came out…. I actually loved that. I was shocked at that when she dropped reality on them when they were stranded. I knew as a kid I kinda wanted Dash and violet to do more since they had powers but watching now… I see it’s in character cuz survival was their priority so I didn’t mind the running away. And when they do use their powers confidently it was around their parents. But I do like the fact that… in the incredibles they kinda showed u could die from doing the superhero job. N they need to get serious…

I really didn't feel like Helen was telling Violet she was disappointed in her. She says it's not her fault and it wasnt fair of her to ask so much of her, which, yeah, the kids were actively discouraged from using their powers. It seemed like more of an "I'm sorry, it's okay. I just wanna say that if Bob had a job where he actually helped people, he would have been waaaayyyy happier. That was why he was a hero. He was just drained and sadly beat down from a job that made him miserable. Which is something too many people can relate to.

Yeah but see, he has a family to support too. The pay might've been good and maybe Helen may have pushed him to go for it, or the government set the job up for him. There's also the fact that due to Bob always having relied on being physically gifted, he probably wouldn't have the education or capacity to learn other skills, like how to be a doctor- a job that would pay well and allow him to really help people.

And with his sit-down with the boss his expressed issue was that they were supposed to be helping people. Were he at the escalation desk where the persistent get sent to make them go away he'd have far more interactions where he can approve claims (even if at a reduced rate) and have been more satisfied. In fact so much of the setup for his life now shows how he feels contained and even trapped. Biggest man in the company in the smallest cubical, a care he barely fits in, drab colors everywhere.

(I agree with you) But within the context of the movie isn't pixar trying to portray Bob as in the wrong for saying that? His whole character arc is based on him changing from someone who thinks normal and mediocre life is beneath them and not worth the time. He created the villain of the story for gatekeeping being a hero and being special to supers, and the "big happy ending" is when he learns to embrace mediocrity (aka family life) as something worthwhile and meaningful. For me what sets this movie (and pixar at that era) apart from disney now is that they're saying "being mediocre is fine, you don't need to always be the special main character", and Syndrome's whole character embodies the lesson that "If there are people that are just born more special or "better"than you, you don't need to bring them down just to make yourself feel better." which is literally what mainstream media is doing now. It was pretty evident that Syndrome- while not being a super, still possessed the ability to rival those who were born with powers because he worked hard, his heart was just in the wrong place so he became the villain.

The “abort” scene, and mr incredible discovering what happened to the other heroes, remain moments of my childhood that I look back on with wide eyes. Every time I see the “abort” scene, my stomach drops. Every single hero dying in combat gave me chills. Helen’s voice actress truly captures the horror. She slowly transitions from Elastigirl, the collected superhero, to an absolutely terrified mother, knowing she and her children are likely about to die. The scene before Bob is captured gives such a sense of dread and horror, realizing that Bob is the only one who survived, and that Syndrome both can and will kill people without hesitation. Truly terrifying, and deeply chilling, both as a child, and as a near adult.

In regards to Bob, it's not only that he's the only one who survived - he knew a lot of these people rather personally. A good chunk of them were at his wedding. Maybe Bob just knew these people through just their superhero aliases, maybe their secret identities (as shown when he was reading the paper earlier and immediately knew that the man who was missing used to be the hero Gaserbeam). It's him realizing that he's that basically, all of his friends/close colleagues are dead.

Having someone die on screen is horrifying, having it so that a child now has to live with the trauma of not saving someone because they couldn't handle the pressure of the situation is one of the most traumatizing thing to watch for anyone young or old. These poor kids are forced to deal with the realization that their parents aren’t invincible in the most brutal way possible. Yes exactly. She is not just disappointed in herself for pressuring her daughter, but feels like she failed to prepare her for the situation. I feel like one of the darkest moments would have to be when Bob learns about the fate of the other heroes. Because you think at first because he has superpower that there is a large gap between him and the villain, that he is the one in control, however as you learn about how many heroes that were defeated by the villain, that power gap slowly but surely becomes smaller and soon enough you soon realize that Bob was never in control and that he ,and by extension his family, are well and are well and truly in danger. One thing in Bob's defense that I'll say put him at better odds than the other heroes: he was the hero with the highest threat level at 9.1. Honestly one thing I liked about this scene is how Bob and Helen both realized they were both wrong and right. Helen wanted her kids safe, and so denied them using their powers that would attract the wrong kind of attention. Now even though the kids didn't use their powers, they still had people after them, and now their unprepared instead of able to use their powers to defend themselves. Bob wanted his kids to use their powers and live up to their potential, or what he thought was their potential, and didn't want them to deny what made him feel special, but then he heard his children die, bc he wanted to feel special again, wanted to use his powers and fight, forgetting that these fights don't always end with him winning. People came as fter the kids regardless what they did, and they always would have, and instead of giving them the nesscery tools, of responsibility, or any training they both left their kids as sitting ducks. And as p as parents that's a brutal thing to learn. I don't blame them, I blame syndrom, but in that moment they definitely blamed themselves.

One detail that i love about that scene is the fact that when Hellen says that there are kids on the plain, Mirage gets scared, the only one who doesn't care is Syndrome and thinking about it now as an adult really changes the way i see the movie, it's such a masterpiece and continues to be it.

I full-heartily agree because I just LOVE when movies have DEPTH like ACTUALLY depth, and I absolutely EAT that shit up. Actions movies in general have a huge problem with just being explosions, fighting, and that's IT. In animation, you have a HUGE opportunity to express depth a lot more as well as emotion in action, which is why I love animation and film so much.

This is a great view point of this movie. I think what assisted with the intensity of the plane scene is that she thought she was alone. When she found out the kids were there it changes everything. It's also great in a way that Violet couldn't use that part of her power BECAUSE she never practiced it properly. This is such a real movie... You know for a superhero movie.

I feel the panic when Helen yells "There are CHILDREN on board!". She is so desperate to safe her kids. And you get for the first time that when she said "You don't get to come, it is dangerous" It wasn't a "Oh, tihi, jk, actually you are perfectly equipped for this". No. It was "You CANNOT come. Dark moments in this movie: When Edna talked about the superhero cape casualties Mr. Incredible looking at the list of heroes who were killed by the Omnidroid Helen and the kids escaping the plane being shot down and Mr. Incredible believing they died When Mr. Incredible threatened to crush Mirage if Syndrome didn't release him and nearly suffocating her when she freed him later The kids running from Syndrome's goons who Helen rightfully said earlier wouldn't hesitate to try to kill them When Syndrome kidnapped Jack Jack Syndrome meeting his death by cape similar to Stratogale

Some other dark topics that I feel like should be discussed: - In the cape scene with Edna, you can tell she feels guilty and responsible for all of those heroes deaths because their suits were her designs - Also in the cape scene, Strato Gal (the girl who got sucked into a jet turbine) WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL WHEN SHE DIED - The desperation in Elastigirls voice when she believed that Dash and Violet were going to be crushed by the ball thing Syndrome releases - Syndrome was planning on kidnapping Jack Jack, assuming to train him and raise him to kill his own parents - The entire chase scene when Dash and Violet were found by Syndromes soldiers - The scene where Mr Incredible discovers all of the super heroes, his friends and colleagues, who have been murdered by the Kronos project - Frozone was originally going to be killed before Mr Incredible, and they were tracking his location and stalking him - They really put an attempted suicide scene in a kids movie This movie is so genuienly good. I have such passion for it omg

I think you undercut an important part of the conversation between Violet and Helen outside the cave. Yes, she (gently) tells Violet that she needs to understand how dire the situation is, but she also apologizes to Violet for putting all that pressure on her back in the plane. She may be older than Dash, but she's still a teenager that was told all her life to repress her powers to appear "normal" (and comes to resent not being "normal.") Helen knows this and regrets dumping all that weight on her daughter's shoulders in the worst of circumstances, but when they're (relatively) safe, she tries to raise Violet's morale while still reminding her that she needs to step up to protect herself and her little brother. Helen's walking a tightrope between being a supportive parent, and also urging her children to take charge in the face of danger. Like I get you were going for hyperbole, but still, your summation of "you disappointed me" is pretty misrepresentative of what Helen was trying to convey to Violet.

Yep! My entire family watched this movie 3 days in a row after we got it many years ago! And Mr. Incredible does not hate his family or Fatherhood. WHAT HE DOES HATE is the fact that his calling, the thing he is by far the most passionate about and best at, is decried by the officially sponsored media as evil, irresponsible, and punishable by "law" (think of war veterans vs public opinion in the last 80 years) . And then, issues of middle age chime in...

I saw this movie with my kids. It was their birthday present to me. I loved it. Especially where Dash is running on water. My feet moved almost as fast as his and I laughed with him! It is still one of my all time favorite movies. You NAILED THIS!!! It is an adult cartoon, it does have real emotion and it speaks so clearly. It's a very honest film. And like every great hero movie, the good guys make it right in the end..... for everyone..... And the look on the kids' faces when the Underminer pops up shows they knew what they were about, and were as serious as their parents. That talk in front of the cave was clear and brutal. It was exactly how I had talked to my kids when they were old enough to understand that NO ONE loved them like I did. And there were people out there that would use them like we use toilet paper, without any thought or remorse. Facing danger with an ability to meet it head on was my idea of the proper way to raise my kids. It's how I was raised. The world is a brutal, ugly place sometimes. And if you aren't prepared to meet it, it will eat you. The safest place is being competent to meet it head on.

Agreed. 'The Incredibles' is one of the flat-out best superhero films ever made, due to its superlative writing and character-building. It deconstructs the genre without making fun of it, gives you all the cool superhero stuff you could want and then some, and grounds the whole story in relatable reality by putting a family drama at the core of it - a really good one, too. There's even a bit of social commentary thrown in, but in a way that is - gasp! - SUBTLE. If Disney/Pixar still made movies like this, there'd be a lot more happy people right now.

The original plane crashed scene had a pilot the person she talks to in the final version to get the plane. When the plane goes down the pilot dies, but the writers changed that because they didn't want to put the death of the pilot on violet for failing to make the force field around the entire plane and the mother for sacrificing him to save her children. The scene was going to be much much darker.

The accuracy to real life that this animated film presents is mind boggling when you think about it, they get even minor details that I pick up every time I watch, like when the plane exploded and they all regain consciousness mid air, thats real life, above 10k ft you become hypoxic and lose consciousness, once your below 10k ft you would regain it realizing you're falling from the sky, they even touched on the hypoxia thing in the second film too

Fun fact: Helen uses correct military radio communications during the whole plane scene. As in, she says basically what an air force pilot would say in the same situation, down to some incredibly specific terms - like "buddy-spiked" (which refers to missiles targeting a friendly aircraft) or "transmitting in the blind guard" (she doesn't know if the tower can hear her, but is transmitting anyway). Note: I don't personally know military or aviation lingo, I just searched the terms she used.

What fascinates me most is how the animation medium (not genre) is often correlated with a kid’s film. Animation isn’t a genre, but just a method of telling a story. Are most animated films kid friendly? Sure and it makes sense why. They don’t feel as realistic visually so they can get away with more. But you nailed it on the head. It’s all down to the writing and context. Pixar in general imbues their films with themes both children and adults can relate to, The Incredibles being one of the best examples. Mid-life crises, strained marriages, the depression of working a 9-5, those aren’t themes for children. But they are themes they can certainly begin to tune into when told well. Animated movies aren’t kid’s movies, they’re just a different medium that can still convey very complex themes in kid friendly fashions. The sooner we move away from disavowing animated films as just “something for kids” the better. That all said, Great video!! Thank you for taking the time to concisely express all of this. I too wish PIXAR went back to this kind of mature storytelling

There's a few things I wish he would have mentioned like the fact that Luscious aka Frozone was going to be syndromes next target. It would explain why the omnidroid fight would take place on an active volcanic Island if you think about it. The Droid would either be beaten because Frozone had the entire ocean and plenty of water so he'd never dehydrate and Syndrome would account for that in the remodel or it would adapt to quickly for Frozone and draw him or push him the center of the volcano and ultimately whittle him down till it could kill him. Also he didn't mention the suicide attempt. The fact that the Parr Family actually all has mercenary kills under their belt. Then there’s the fact that several military and police are killed by the Omidroid when it attacks. Remember the Helicopter crew that went down with an explosion large enough to be seen frome Frozone's penthouse mind you so that most likely killed or severely injured several other people. And the initial military response when we see the tank take a shot and immediately get blown up just before it cut away so we don't know how many more military were killed before the Parr's arrived. Let's see there’s the fact that the government agency Rick Dicker works for that are in charge of relocating supers has to track down anyone who has ever know that super, kidnap them and wipe any and all memories pertaining to said super. It's not specified if they also replace the memories they erase but I'd have to imagine they'd have to otherwise people would start asking questions about why their friends and/or family suddenly can't remember anything that happened during certain part of their life. Then you have to multiply all that work by however many members of the family there are children included. Let's see there’s also the hero’s that died because of capes including Strato Gale who was either high school age or just barely out of high school, I believe she was 16 or 18. Of course this fact ended up being a sort of Checovs Gun with Syndrome being the shot that was fired. I also just remembered that when Frozone froze the office if you're following the laws of nature then that cop is either dead or will live the rest of his life with permanent nerve damage from being incased in ice. It's honestly though more likely that he died from suffocation because last time I checked you can’t breath through ice. But yeah I agree it is a really dark movie that I love re-watching. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
