Around 1.5 million Indian Army soldiers served alongside British troops during the First World War. More than 74,000 lost their lives. Hundreds of wounded Indian troops were hospitalised in the English town of Brighton, in sites such as the Royal Pavilion. The Hindus and Sikhs who died were cremated on the Sussex Downs and, in 1921, the Chattri memorial was constructed on the cremation site.

My Father's Course in Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul was cut short because of deteriorating situation in East Pakistan in 1970/71 and his unit was deployed at the tail end of his PMA course. My grandfather and father both fought 1971 War. My uncle (fathers younger brother) was also in the Army and his unit was one of the first to enter Swat and Wana in 2009 to clear the Taliban and restore control.

A rare and unknown facts about the way Indians were treated in Brighton. Thank you brits.
@jnsbmi
@jnsbmi 5 жыл бұрын
India sent the largest Volunteer force to help Britain during World War I & II. Yet Indians are hardly remembered. Take Gallipoli for Instance the sacrifices of the Anzacs are remembered but nobody even mentions that Indian Army was at Gallipoli too. Indians died in large numbers there. The French, Italians remember the Indian troops, some Australians too remember them ( World War II they fought against the Japanese ). It's sad but these are facts. Anyways, next time when I visit Britain, I sure will make a pilgrimage to Brighton to say a prayer for my fallen countrymen.
@sjdover69
@sjdover69 4 жыл бұрын
The Anzacs are remembered of course. But above others only by the Anzacs themselves. It has become part of their cultural identity. Their business. Don't believe the British are not aware of Indian troops at any of our battles. There is no greater gift than to fight and die for someone else. We never forget that.
@vetiarvind
@vetiarvind 4 жыл бұрын
@@sjdover69 well back then indians saw themselves as subjects of the British monarch. I don't think they were doing it for the British nation so much as for India as part of the empire. I don't know for sure though. Even in the early 30s the Congress never pursued for full Indian independence and just wanted a dominion status. It's only after a lot of high handedness and authoritativeness that they then pursued independence. It's not hard to imagine an alt history where India is still a country under the crown like Canada/Australia. I'm glad the British aren't ruling us though, our economy went downhill in that period but I don't think people realised the full impact in that period.

Defiantly A Human You had the British Army and you had the British Indian Army. Both were separate identities. Their chain of commands were separate. After partition the British trained, English, British Indian army officers had to effectively retrain if they wanted to join the British Army. British Indian Army officers could remain to train the new Pakistan and Indian Armies.

British used and thrown them. Indian people were worthless to British Raj. Now they are confronted with brexit still they're trying to run here and there but no one paying attention to crying eglish men. Indian soldiers were brutally discriminated in ranks by imperial power. Only sikh, Jewish, Parshi and Muslims were served most in lower official levels.

Just leave and go live in Russia or China. Those western hating countries i have no doubt wil welcome you with open arms. Seriously please leave...

@Leonidis78 they gave us Indian military academy in return the parliament and plus we were busy fighting amongst ourselves due to which Brits got the advantage to colonize us not to forget before air force academy came into existence all Indian Air force pilots were trained in England I didn't like Brits slaughtering people in Jallianwala bagh but then again it was because of them India became what it is today a democratic country

Most of the Indian troops that died in uniform died of disease in India in WW1 not in action, the ones that fought were few in number & their loyalty was so questionable they had to be removed from France in 1915, when England was desperate for every man it could get. This, "they loyally fought with us" (& therefore mass importing them into England now via the Government's mad foreign immigration policy is nothing to worry about) is dangerously ill-judged a-historical false history.

these men were loyal to the end. Read about saragarhi if you need an example of the bravery of Sikh and Hindu soldiers serving us. You obviously don't care for any history you can't weaponise for your political motives.

@@jakobmorris1483 What I posted was 100% historical truth, what happened at the Battle of Saragarhi in 1897 doesn't alter anything it says.

Well I want sources for your claims. But wether they are true or not that still dose not alter the fact that these men died for the uk, wether it was disease or bullets they were willing to die.
