It made me tear up a bit to hear Anne say “are you done with my hair”. She is growing up so fast. As far as how I maintain my locs, palm rolling is my preferred method because it helps manage frizz along the loc itself. And I haven’t seen any thinning as of yet. I did wash my hair after the first month and didn’t see any issues with the locing process after. If anything, water made my hair tangle up and loc more. And now at 11 months loc’ed, I wash every two weeks or so and only retwist every 2-3 months. Also, the back of my head has never seen a Comb lol. I do use a comb in the front though to straighten up the parts. I’m so happy you decided to do this. Her locs are so beautiful and are going to be EVERYTHING when they mature 🤩

Ma’am! Speak your truth & mine! My 7 yr old son is on the spectrum and has loc. We have been growing them since he was 2. His Autism is sensory as well and he would scream his eyes out when we tried to take him to the barber shop. So Locs has saved my life x1000. Vaughn, you did a great job all the way around! Styling, patience, and making a decision that is best for Anne. My only advice is to maybe do it on a day she doesn’t have therapy, so she isn’t too tired. Also, maybe break up the style session over two days or 5-10 minute increments throughout the day. PLEASE keep the mid-weeks coming. A nice treat. I’m loc’d. My son’s hair is similar to Annie-Boo’s. I palm roll his locs too. There has been no thinning or narrowing of his full beautiful locs. I use a water based leave-in or a light styling mousse for retwists. To make her more comfortable with the clip tension, you can place the clip further down the loc and attach it to an adjacent loc and it’ll have the same outcome. Also, down the line, hairs will merge with other locs (noticeable during wash/retwist days), to separate them pain-free, instead of “popping” the loc, I use the beauty supply tool that is used to cut thread from weaves. No problems at all. I hope my mini-novel was helpful to you in some way. Luuh Y’all 💞

Awesome styling option for a child with autism-- great DIY mama. They look great. I had two sets of locs and palm rolled both. I didn't experience thinning. Maybe consider interlocking? That might as work since Anne likes to pull them apart. If they're interlocked, the locking process makes it more difficult for them to unravel.

Palm rolling only makes the hair thin and smaller if you do too often. You doin a good job. Every 6 to eight weeks so that the new growth don’t get too tangled may be a good timeframe to refresh. Try and decide what works best for you guys. The main thing is when they start locing moisturizing may become an issue.

I love her locks!!! I'm a fan of palm rolling, especially for her texture. It's a smoother finish. It only thins when you over do it. Meaning you don't give the roots a break and are "tightening" to often. She actually responds like most tender headed children. I say this as someone who has braided/styled many many little heads. You're doing great!!! The key is patience and letting her have her breaks here and there. You got this momma!!!

I remember doing my 5 daughters hair when they were younger,……taking breaks while combing really helped myself and them! Definitely lots of back pain, my husband helped with the washing I wish I would have thought about locking or twisting their hair. Now they are 30,28,26,17,17!

Vaughn can you be my mom?!😭 Aside from that, Anne is doing amazing and her hair looks great! There was no doubt that you would ever be able to maintain her locs - you’ve definitely done your research! I’m not sure if this an option for you but you can wash it after placing a stocking cap over her hair to keep it from unraveling.
