Having been in the psychiatric system myself, as a patient, and having concluded that it didn't do anything positive for me, I had to figure out that psychiatry is, unfortunately, still in a state of utter primitivism. There's no interest in root causes, or someone's background and history. Just swallow a handful of nerve poisons, and you'll be all right again after some time. I've been following doctor Josef for quite some time now. He is a breath of fresh air within a corrupted and mentally sick system. Luckily there are more psychiatrists who are open-minded and really interested in bettering the situation of their patients. This gives me hope, but psychiatry still has got a long way to go in order to become a viable treatment option for people in mental distress. This interview is gold for me. Thanks, from the bottom of my heart, and please keep up the good work!

All the meds caused leaky gut, inability to absorb nutrients- suicide ideation that almost killed me in 2016. I am SO GRATEFUL I cried out to God to please help me get to the why / how I got there and please help me heal after I came out of a coma in 2016. It was a ride trying all kinds of modalities- but I can share after getting to the root with my functional doc in 2021, recalibrated my body and titrated off the last 2 meds by Dec 2021- changed my diet- exercise-regulated my nervous system and most importantly my faith in Christ has completely flipped my whole world and I dealt with the trauma that occurred in childhood, etc. I no longer suffer from depression-anxiety-rumination, racing thoughts,etc. She is 100% on the mark and there is healing! So absolutely grateful I cried out to God in 2016 and He led me through. I am so grateful so many are helping people heal! No more suffering in silence! 🙏🏼

At 23:55 she mistakenly calls glyphosate a pesticide, its qn herbicide. I would call it a minor mistake, but the reason why it is used is such a strong amount is to standardize the harvest of the crop. Apparently they think its a good idea to stress the plants at the same time to make harvesting easier by putting posion on it right before harvest. An herbicide is for plants, pesticide is for insects...

I started on a ketogenic diet during a really difficult time, where after 10 years I dropped from taking 6mg alprazolam to 1mg alprazolam and though I didn't have any side effects for the first 2 weeks, I was not ready for the barrage of side effects, both psychological and physical that my body and mind would go through. As well as losing weight extremely fast, I found myself living in a hyper manic state, which was often followed by a depressed state, though the mania seemed much more prominent and last for longer. It took 7 months before the ups and downs starting evening out, and now I am on just 0.25 mg, I still have ocasional anxiety attacks, but I am able to work again and actually be in social surroundings without freaking out anymore... I'm writing something about the whole experience... It seems I'm absolutely not alone in this experience, so who knows, maybe it can help someone...

Would you be able to share with me if you went on them for panic attacks or anxiety? And how the problem you went on them for in the beginning is for you today with less Xanax.

My experience: I'm not on a keto diet, but I pay a lot of attention to eat natural foods only and no white sugar. I eat honey, dried fruit etc. I try to eat intuitively, with only the ultra processed and sugary foods excluded. I eat fermented foods every day. As for gluten, I tried gluten free, but ended up with nutritional deficiencies. When I ate a piece of wholemeal bread for the first time after that, my brain's happy chemicals went off the scale. I took it as a sign there was something my body desperately needed. By that time I was pretty well attuned to my body's healthy cravings (I don't mean ice cream cravings, but cravings for healthy foods), so I trusted it. But I only buy true sourdough bread with only essential ingredients, or bake myself a wholemeal bread. I think there's a difference between natural gluten that comes from high quality wheat, and whatever they add to ultra processed breads and pastries. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that perhaps some people need to go on keto to reverse damage, but not so long ago humans used to eat all sorts of foods and metabolic syndrome was unheard of.

This sounds like something that could be the answer for a number of people psychiatrically diagnosed. It only makes sense to look at the foods people eat and drink as excesses of sugar, caffeine and alcohol are known to affect insulin levels which in turn affect moods and even people's cognitive abilities. I however am on the opposite end of the dietary spectrum meaning that eating a good amount of carbs from grains lifts my mood and calms feelings of anxiety, most likely due to the fact that carbs help produce serotonin and tryptophan. Discoveries are great, but it's important to remember that one size does not fit all.

Thanks for the fabulous conversation and informed information. So many questions about diet and mental health have been ignored. Having been through the health care system with prolonged GI issues, and after many debilitating tests, and expense pharmaceuticals, that created more issues. Even being told it all in your head, given psychological medication under the off label fibromyalgia treatment. (Fibromyalgia caused by pharceutical treatments for GI issues. During a common test for on going GI symptoms, HIDA scan. Not able to complete the last part of the scan due to extreme pain just after the IV CCK. This injection caused the same deep, sharp pain that eating food was causing, followed by extreme nausea ans often vomiting. Diagnosis, Crowns disease. Multiple trials on expensive pharmaceutical, never a decrease in symptoms, only new increasing complications. Not once was diet discussed by and physician or clinic. After months of elimination diet, with some improvement, and the many years of physical and emotional strain. The best move was to stop all pharmaceuticals and eat only whole foods. During a special test, one that took me 1000miles from home. I attempted to ask the speclist about why the CCK would have such an effect and his response could be considered medical negligence. To get to the question, CCK research seems to be somewhat limited, but gaining. Studies on CCK4 and inducing anxiety is the most interesting. More studies are needed and more well educated physicians like the good Doctor here can help explain the process, and reasons behind the gut/brain connection.

I promise you, diet will never be a cure all - but it certainly helps. I think the biggest difference in Depression treatment is Behavioral Activation - doing things that are either good for you and or that you enjoy. Working and having realistic goals and cutting ties with things that really aren’t realistic or way outside of your control as it is a goal that is unreachable - for example, give up on people who don’t choose you and move on - it’s okay… really. Maybe very difficult, but it’s okay… AND if they do come back, great! But you’re not wasting time and mental energy. I know depression is multifaceted and it’s hard to put in words for each of my personal episodes of it - For me personally, generally the Loss of something in life was a clear trigger but beyond that and in a word, shame, is the bullshit I deal with sometimes - I’m talking Mark Baker PhDs views on Shame vs Guilt. Anyways that said, sometimes crude answers helped me put things in perspective better in dealing with being human…. What we accomplish is important to how we are and feel, even if you paint or draw or are an athlete and win or teach kids in sports and or school, or you graduate from college and use your degree or create videos for fun or are a body builder or grow plants or hunt or fish or volunteer to feed the homeless! All of it is Behavioral Activation - you’re engaging with life vs sitting in a stew of your chording mental landscape…. A stew of uncomfortably warm feeling in your face and your ass from sitting all day is deactivated and lazy vs an earned couch lay down and tv show binge on a day off vs a bath of entertainment and comforts puffing you out until your nothing…. More than anything, there is no perfect decisions in life - live and you’ll get hurt for sure and you may also have some awesome experiences that make it worth it vs doing nothing… Social connections, sex, nutrition and movement, pray or use law of attraction if that’s your thing or if your an atheist then look at monkey hierarchies in books and evolutionary psychology and morality to construct your own view of humanity.

Yes it is a good idea to research one's own health conditions, I looked into hearbal remedies and found nettle a good match for my overall health not just the arthritis. The flare ups are much less severe, but curiously they seem to be getting replaced with tiredness. Also I'm not feeling depressed but instead a little spaced out and forgetful. Could inflammatory conditions be suppressed depression I wonder. Incidentally i do have things to be unhappy about. I am definitely of the oppinion that poor emotional health leads to poor physical health rather than the other way around. I know I spoke out against this topic in another comment of mine in a different video. But I watched this one and the part of the one recommended after this. I think it’s important to note diet isn’t going to change past or current traumas for a person as mentioned in one of these posts. And changing diet is not easily accessible for everyone and suggesting so sometimes contributes to social injustices. Not to mention there are a lot of misconceptions with organic produce in the US. 10 or so years ago, we were allowed to use certain natural amendments, including stuff like copper sprays as a fungicide, BT and safer soap as a pesticides, ag clay as pest deterrents etc. even if there wasn’t clear evidence that these things worked or were safe…copper is a non renewable resource and we probably shouldn’t be consuming it in the way it was applied. I’ve also worked on farms with horrendous food safety handling standards, one place where the bathroom was a far away tree or a hole u dig… all in the US. So overall, I’ve had the complete opposite experience with dietary and lifestyle change than proposed here n I guess that’s bc of other stuff in my life at the time causing me more stress than I could handle despite the supposed fortifications.

@@snowps1 I don't know if ketosis is "extreme," but it's definitely hard to maintain long term. Ketones/ketosis is a literal hammer and a powerful intervention, but it must be done properly and with care. Taking blood tests to ensure your ketones are in the proper range is essential to ensure you're doing the diet properly. Don't take on ketosis lightly and just thinking cutting carbs some will get the job done. Nothing wrong with Mediterranean like Somegenerichandle said, but ketosis is unique and unlike other dietary interventions. Anyone who is really suffering with legitimate mental illness is more likely to get a response from ketosis than the Mediterranean.

Does carnivore mean no fruit or veg? How can that be healthy? What about vitamin c? Minerals? Fibre?
@juliehorsley482 ай бұрын
Yes, carnivore is an animal based, species specific way of eating so meat, fish, eggs, dairy if tolerated, salt and good fat which is essential fuel for the brain. We don't need fibre... that's another myth. Minerals can need supplementing; that depends on the individual. There are small amounts of vitamin C in animal foods that research (O'Hearn) says is sufficient for our needs. Dr Georgia Ede is another (metabolic) psychiatrist who has written about these and other ways of eating to support mental health.
@brandonalan61152 ай бұрын
It’s hard to believe at first, since we’ve all been programmed how important fruit and vegetables are, but all the vitamins and minerals we need are found in animals products. All animal proteins contain all essential amino acids in the ratios we need (plants mostly don’t contain all essential amino acids and even when they do the ratios aren’t idea) Vitamins and minerals in plants are often not even in bio available forms for humans, some of us can convert them, some cannot; not too mention fiber blocks the absorption of many of them as well. The amount of vitamins and minerals you get from fruit and vegetables isn’t as much as you may think. Vitamin C is found in small amounts in meat, and higher amounts in organs and such. Vitamin C competes for the same cell receptor as glucose, so the RDA for vitamin C is extremely high compared to what we actually need. Most people just have a lot of glucose out competing the vitamin C so they need more. In the absence of eating carbohydrates, all the vitamin C will get absorbed. No one is getting scurvy eating carnivore, I’m also 5 years in now and all my bloodwork is good, no deficiencies. Fiber is good at making you absorb less nutrients, which is a benefit if you’re eating lots of garbage foods. It also keeps you full, which is a benefit if you’re eating garbage foods. It also increases the profits of toilet paper companies. Eating carnivore you don’t want any fiber, and I’ll tell you from personal experience - my digestion is infinitely better than it used to be. Also bloating and farting completely go away without fiber.
@reinerschafer17082 ай бұрын
You can live perfectly well eating only animal products your whole life. The same cannot be said about eating only vegetable products. We've been brainwashed by a government that needs to sell the grains they have been subsidizing since WWII, hence why the bottom of the pyramid is grain based and highly processed seed oils are pushed as healthier than natural fats and oils.
@Mukti4812 ай бұрын
We have evolved from monkeys ,our digestive tract is almost identical . And they eat alot of fruit veg and some crabs or fish . We don't have the digestive tract of a dog or cat or lion ,which are meant to eat meat and because the digestive tract is fairly short it is digested fairly quickly not left to rot in the guts. Excessive meat consumption has been linked to colon cancer and the like. There are no live enzymes in dead meat . If you are what you eat I would rather be wholesome protein rich mineral and vitamin rich coloufull and fresh than a rotting carcass.

@@Mukti481 every study that links red meat to a negative health outcome is NOT looking at people eating only red meat. It’s looking at people eating more red meat, much of which is processed meats like pepperoni on a pizza, or the beef in a frozen lasagne, or perhaps the 150cal burger patty in their 1200 calorie combo meal with a large fry and coke. There is zero (yes zero) studies of people eating a diet of exclusively red meat showing a single negative health outcome. People are just being misled by nutritional epidemiological studies which are a joke to anyone with critical thinking skills. They can lead to hypothesis but those hypothesis need to be tested or it’s completely useless data. Yes people who eat more fast food red meat have more colorectal cancer, but that’s not proving anything about unprocessed red meat. Per Google, herbivores have digestive tracts 10-12 x their body length, carnivores 3-6 and humans are around 5x. We also have one of the most acidic phs of all animals, right there with vultures, as we were once scavengers. Our stomach in a fasted state can easily handle raw meat, it’s one of the most digestible foods, that we actually absorb, which is why bowel movements are probably 90% lsss volume compared to a vegan eating a bunch of useless plant material that they shit out.
