Find out when and why you should be taking progesterone when taking postmenopausal hormone therapy replacement. It's more complicated than you might think and should be used correctly for uterine protection. Be sure to stay proactive about your menopausal health when using hormone therapy in perimenopause and menopause.

A friend of mine who is a health care professional, was not thrilled that I was taking unisom long-term... You take progesterone the second half.of cycle (day 15 onward leading up to period). It's confusing she said 1-12. A cycle day 1 starts on your period (1st day bleed). Your not taking progesterone through your period.... your taking it leading up to your period.

I can recommend Lara Briden's book The Hormone Repair Manual. She talks about this. Basically progestins are not progesterone, they're structurally different, so the body can't use them as well as body identical progesterone e.g. Utrogestan and Promethium, which are structurally the same as our body's natural progesterone. Therefore we tend to get less side effects and more benefit of taking body identical.

Hi Dr. Hirsch, I am post menopausal (age 62) with a uterus. For the past 5 years I’ve been getting more frequent UTI’s. My gynecologist gave me low dose antibiotics to take after intercourse, but I didn’t want to keep taking them. After being made to feel that I wasn’t cleaning myself properly, and drinking large quantities of cranberry juice, I learned through other KZbin doctors that the UTI’s are caused bc of the lack of estrogen. I discussed with my gynecologist, & she agreed to put me on Premarin vaginal cream, plus alternate with a lubricant suppository. I haven’t had a UTI in a few months now. But now that I’m watching your video, I’m wondering if I should be on oral estrogen&progesterone. Note, too, that I have a history of endometriosis in my early 20’s, but it was resolved via surgery and medication and I had 2 natural births. Could oral estrogen& progesterone combo be a better course of treatment? Thank you for your informative videos.

For a 73yr old woman with uterine hyperplasia due to Estrogen Dominance, which dosage of progesterone works best to decrease size of uterus and stop bleeding? Will 200mg caps taken twice a day work? I noticed some women are prescribed 600mg daily, taken in two doses of 300mg twice a day. A D&C, histerscopy and another biopsy is in the process of being scheduled. Previous tissue sample was insufficient. Uterine ultrasound was stable at 24mm for six months while taking one 200mg cap daily, but uterus increased to 31mm last month. Another ultrasound is scheduled a month from the last one. Thank you for your informative videos Dr. H.. your knowledge is much appreciated!

@@pkstiever I think estrogen dominance is a relative thing so all hormones can basically be tanked out but if the estrogen is still higher than the progesterone in the body it can create symptoms and yes it's stored in the tissues from what I've read.

From what I’ve been reading, there are pretty significant differences, yet you don’t focus on that in this video. This is the main beef I have with this channel- thanks for bringing this up. She is a conventional OB/GYN, and they continue to recommend progestINS rather than progesterone, just like you said. That term (estrogen dominant) only means your progesterone is low in RELATION to your estrogen. It doesn't necessarily mean that your estrogen is high. And as we age.... your estrogen AND progesterone will decline further. In perimenopause, the 1st thing to decline is your progesterone, then your estrogen. That's why they use that confusing term

The problem is my hormones go up and down WEEKLY, yes weekly, not monthly. Which means every week I have 1-2 days of ‘period, , 2-3 good days, 1 crazy ‘post ovulation drop’ day and 2 days of ‘PMS’. Im currently supplementing progesterone (oil) 3 days a week ( p.o. drop-pms) working with my natural rhythms. With the use of estrogen patch I will have to give my body more progesterone. Shall I continue it the same fashion or do u suggest otherwise? I strive to work with my body, not against it… FYI I’ve been using USP pure progesterone oil natural oil base that my sensitive body can tolerate.

I've noticed that some holistic doctors seem to recommend progesterone and DHEA but leave the estrogen out, saying that most blood tests won't show the ratio between estrogen and progesterone and that many women can be estrogen dominant because it's stored in the tissues. I have def. developed a "menopot" after a few short months of incorrect eating (so estrogen there?) I also never had hot flashes my entire peri menopause experience and thank God still do not. What I did have was severe body pain that felt like fibromyalgia and anxiety. I used to take a lot of chaste tree (that helps increase progesterone in the body, but not sure how!) I don't want to gain more weight, obviously, and my skin is already thinning, and sagging. I am using vag estrogen for vag atrophy right now, just started it. Also experiencing some hair loss and cold intolerance but have low thyroid conversion activity that I haven't treated yet either. Do you think that oral progesterone and DHEA would be an o.k. place to start or do you feel I need to replace estrogen too? Would the DUTCH test give me a clearer idea of hormone levels and ratios? For sure everything seems low but I think it's low progesterone symptoms I am mostly feeling. Vitex used to make me feel so good. Thanks!

I dont have any other symptoms except for anxiety, my dyslexia has got worse, a few palpatations, and bad dreams every night. I was prescribed estrogen gel and an oral progesterone tab every night. I didnt get on with it, i had very bad pmt and a zombie like feeling so i stopped the complete hrt after just 12 days. The dr has suggested a mirena coil as she said my migraines would go and my pmt would improve. But i'm scared! There seem so many side effects - hair loss? Weight gain? Just as bad pmt? Every thing was fine for 11 months and then bleeding lightly almost every month. Had a hysterescopy and the doctor said endometrium has thinned out. I should take 200mg of Utrogestan. But inspute of increasing utrogestan everyday I have bleeding spotting unapire of decreasing estradiol to one pump. Spotting for 10 days now. Is this because of hysterescopy or increased utrogestan ?

Hello, I just came across your KZbin page, and I am enjoying all of your videos. I am at the end of perimenopause. I was using patch and progesterone. It was working well, but I still felt like I needed something more. I tried BHRT therapy, and it doesn't work for me. Too much uncertainty in levels and if it lasts 3 or 4+ months. Therefore I am letting it run out. So I can go back on patch and progesterone alone. I am starting to wake at night and have symptoms returning leg pain arms falling asleep. I am at the beginning of month 3 with pellets. Could this mean estrogen running is low, or could this be the testosterone? I'm unsure when to put the patches back on; I don't want to have too much estrogen before it's time. I am still not sure if I will use testosterone again. Do you have videos on testosterone for women? Thank you-your videos are very helpful.

I pop one of my 200 mg capsules and spread it on my inner thighs, lowet abdomen, or forearms. I do this for 14 or 15 days every third month, so two and a half months period free. Have never tried spreading it in my pelvic floor area. I wish I knew the reasons Heather prefers monthly applications.
