My Little Thought Tree

Күн бұрын

I can't imagine many people had high hopes for a live action Tom and Jerry film, I can't imagine many people will be surprised that I didn't like it. Nonetheless, this is a film that reuses some of the classic gags from the original cartoons; why aren't they funny here like they were in the show? What is it about the slapstick here that they've got wrong? And then, by extension, what exactly was it about the original cartoons from the 40's and 50's that made them so funny?
My Little Thought Tree is my channel for drawing out the deeper meaning and emotion in film, TV, and the world at large through relaxed, analytical video essays. I am a professional counsellor and often draw on my psychology and therapy background to better understand characters, themes, and emotion in fiction. I upload every Saturday and occasionally on Tuesdays, if I'm feeling productive.

Since this movie seems to be aimed at millennials and their kids with the themes of marriage and job searching, I think it's safe to say that this falls under the "egregious nostalgia bait" category. It's sad that they tried to draw people in with that instead of what made tom and jerry interesting to watch in the first place (creative slapstick)

I honestly believe tom and jerry should always be 2d or if in 3d keep it VERY VERY cartoonic, By adding the live people and the very real surrounding you lose your audience by the sheer fact you see them for what they are, a cat, and a mouse. you can lose the fact that they are a cartoon- of course, they are one but it seems ALL the animals are cartoonish which loses the touch of the animal slapstick. Tom and jerry is a VERY Violent slapstick cartoon, and it requires creative minds to write out unique and well-planned comedy. I'm very disappointed in the fact that each time a new tom and jerry related product has been slowly losing its charm from the past. the fact I can rewatch all the old cartoons even ones I've not seen, I can still find it funny, but watching this? It's very cringy and poorly done. Keep Tom and very 2d honestly, the 3d models and oversaturated colors on them look awful and I'm baffled no one in the production team even went- hmmm can't see their expressions well, and they look like an eyesore in the scene.

Hmmm. You’re right. This is probably a direct to VHS type thing. But I do have to say that this definitely isn’t advertised the same as other big movies. Big movies go big, think the marvel or Star Wars movies where you literally can’t escape advertising for it for months. I barely even heard about Tom and Jerry 2021 like a week before release. Pretty sure the marketing budgets bear this out as well. Are they marketed different than old straight to vhs movies? Sure. But they’re not on par with modern blockbuster advertisements.

All slapstick would be horrifying in a real-life situation. it only works by divorcing the real-life ramifications from it. In the few clips you showed here, like the piano falling on Tom's head, we go immediately to reaction shots of people being horrified by what they've seen. There's even a loud gasp or groan when the piano hits Tom. This makes the action too real and sucks the humor out of it.

It doesn't help that Tom and Jerry REALLY don't look like they're there. Roger Rabbit just did it so much better somehow. They made the same mistake with the 90s animated Tom and Jerry movie (the one with the orphan girl Robyn whose dad is Indiana Jones), it's not THEIR story, it's Robyn's story. This movie does the same with the lead actress, and you know Hollywood loves the whole "live-action remake" fad because they can sell the lead actors over the actual title characters.

Here's my pitch: Tom is moving in to a new house with his owner, a nice elderly lady. He really loves his owner and that's shown. They lead a very nice life that complements each other. He's very content. Perhaps they're moving because the lady's husband just passed a few months back and she needs to get away from the memories and to a cheaper house. They're both still mourning their loss. Then, we see Jerry. A mouse living in this house. It's been empty for quite some time but he still fondly remembers the nice family that lived there before. He's used to owning the house. Being treated well by people. Then, the first meeting. The old lady doesn't like mice. They freak her out. And Tom and Jerry clearly have very different ideas about who owns the house and how to "run it". The comedy battle ensues with Tom and Jerry trying to outsmart and up each other constantly until the house eventually ends up in ruins after all of their fighting. Turns out the old lady is the grandmother in the family that used to live there. They saved their house for her and gifted it to her when they were moving to a bigger place. The whole movie concludes with a lesson about being kind to people because you never know their story or something like that. I don't know, I just came up with this now so it's probably not that good, but my point is they should have kept it simple

Agreed. It’s like they saw Disney , in their creativity crisis, say “I know! We’ll rehash our successes from the 90s and before into live action movies so we can get some more cash flow!” And then all the other hollywooders said “hey, Disney’s making money, copy that idea with whatever intellectual properties you can get ahold of, so we also can make money. Have I mentioned we like money?” Each release devalues and tarnishes the original work, with the exception of the sonic movie which was passable as an original work.

Maybe not as much in cartoons, but movies will definitely go over and beyond just for the sake of quality. It's like these corporates forget to make movies enjoyable for kids, teens and adults. Anyone remember Spongebob, or Hey Arnold?? They weren't only enjoyable to kids but to adults as well! That's where 2020- and future films now are missing. They feel like they're trying too hard and they make their movies irrelevant due to them being too worried about what's going on in the present. Imagine coming back to a movie in your 20s when you were 10 watching this and just feel like gagging because they're talking about fortnite which probably died years before you went to highschool. Bay's Transformers started the trend of making movies like this, with heavy emphasis on the human cast instead of the characters you went there to see. But that's because the Transformers were massively-complicated CGI designs that took mind-boggling amounts of time and money to render. It's a cost-cutting strategy. And even the sequels to it relied on it less and had more of the Transformers. Doing it again with such meh CGI as this just makes the formula look even more cheap than it already was, in every sense.

Something to consider further is the use of narrative space. Slapstick or physical comedy requires a huge amount of narrative space. This explains why, as you mention, Tom and Jerry feel like a "background": the tit-for-tat, the pratfall, the three-stooges poke-in-the-eye appear simply but they demand attention and capture it in a very effective way. This is where the feeling of stupidity comes from: there's little room for character development, larger exposition, etc. Imagine Charlie Chaplin in a coming-of-age story. It simply doesn't work, not because it would be a money-grabbing remake, or require complex CG, or anything else. There is nothing inherently doomed about remakes (the roots of cinema lie in the remaking of novels: the entire medium has always been about "remaking). A film like this just ignores everything that goes into motion art and animation: space, timing, narrative, action, etc. It reduces Tom and Jerry to the cultural memory of "Tom and Jerry" (a cat and mouse game based on violence) rather than the dynamic of Tom and Jerry (a purposely shallow character play the real interest of which lies in *denying expectation* : the point is knowing Tom will not catch Jerry. The experience is drawing that suspension out, subverting the ways in which the viewer expects Tom *won't* catch Jerry, and so on.)

That would get boring after the first 30 minutes. The movie as such would have worked if Tom and Jerry had some real connection with the humans. IMO, the problem was that the animals only interacted with two characters- Kayla and Terrence and both of them were objectively shitty people. One was a girl who lied her way into a job and the other a petty jealous man trying to tear someone down. Instead, if the human characters themselves had some sort of redeemable qualities and they bonded, that would have been better- Here's my attempt at it- Tom is the bride's cat who doesn't get along with the groom's dog (who is Spike). The couple has had arguments over which of their pets should be in the wedding and finally as a compromise bring both of them to the hotel. Jerry is already a mouse living in the hotel and maybe at first Tom tries to chase and eat Jerry, Jerry and Spike form an alliance to take down Tom. The story can be taken from there.

It’s so sad how these remakes are so lazy. They really rely a lot on the audience’s knowledge of what they have previously watched. Also, you can tell the writers do not really understand the source material at all. Like for example here, and what you say with the slapstick comedy’s pacing; what they’re telling me with this film is that they just watched one episode and then remembered that it was fast and put it into the movie. Another good example is the remake of Beauty and the Beast. They totally misinterpreted Belle, and Belle and Beast’s relationship. It’s just sad really

In this sense (characters being ripped out of their preferred medium) this Tom & Jerry 'movie' is like the Lion King or Mulan: A lot of imaginative stylistic choices are removed and the whole becomes pointless - in a poor man's approach to make a 'more realistic' movie.
@RedFloyd469
@RedFloyd469 3 жыл бұрын
The term "realism" gets thrown around a lot when talking about the less than mediocre disney remakes. The truth is that "realism" is not equivalent to "using real life actors, in a setting that looks like it's taken from the real world". Realism means grounding your characters in their world, having them be emotionally relatable without it being pandering, and having logically consistent rules to your world-building. Although the Lion King remake never actively broke the rules of realism, it also didn't add anything of value that wasn't already there in the original, infinitely more beautiful animated film. As a matter of fact it kind of DID break it's rules by having the characters look real but still have their mouths move in stiff, CGI movements that portray no emotions. As for Mulan, realism is fully thrown out of the window. Mulan is a complete mary sue, completely unlikeable, and breaks the laws of her own universe's physics constantly, with no regard for her own safety, because she can't be hurt anyway. The message of the film is all over the place, and none of the characters are likeable, as opposed to the absolutely amazing original Mulan film. "Realism" is completely absent here.

Also I'm pretty sure the "liberal" ideology encourages people getting educated. Why would they want cheaper college? How are they going to get qualified if they can't pay? How are they going to pay if they aren't qualified? I know the "I need to go to college to get a job/get a job to go to college" concept is ridiculous but sadly its becoming true. Colleges are way overpriced at this point and the debt keeps rising. The liberal agenda you're talking about is the agenda of idiot SJWs meanwhile the majority of the left doesn't think that way. The right doesn't own the "pull yourselves up by the bootstraps" idea. Yes, there is a toxic group of people who believe in a perfect utopia where no one has to get offended and where everyone is equal but this movie is not a part of that, its a boomer corporate cash grab with HORRIBLE writing. There's not one moment in this movie where I got annoyed by any sort of SJWism, its all just a cringe attempt to be "hip and cool, look at me children I know how to floss" and its so focused on that it forgets that it is a Tom and Jerry movie. There also seems to be this naive linear thinking that if someone is going to get hit then the further they fly, or the faster it happens, the funnier it is. In my limited experience of animation, the funniest effects are ones that happen at a believable pace where you can clearly see the cause and effect. Compare Jerry hitting Tom with a vase at 15:40 with Tom pulling himself into the air during the scene with the keyboard in the park. Jerry's hit, while fast, had a clear wind up, followed by Tom falling to the floor. It's fine and it's funny. Tom"s tail grab firstly happens on a cut, and secondly it instantly turns him into a strange whirlwind in the sky. I assume it's because faster and higher was meant to be funnier, but imagine if all that happened was Tom sitting up, feeling the pull from his tail, and then looking surprised as he slid off the back of his chair. It would be significantly slower, but would be easier to understand, you'd be able to see Tom's expression and the panic to avoid falling off the seat is something we've all seen. Same thing with Tom's balloons instantly launching him into the very distance when he's at the hotel window. Faster didn't mean funnier. Anyway, rant over.
@mylittlethoughttree
@mylittlethoughttree 3 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. It's the reactions that make it funny. Too often the film either rushed them, drowned them out with epicness, or showed us the live action crowd cringing at the disaster instead. Doesn't matter how many times we see a crowd cringe in this film, "oh no, the posh hotel has been trashed" isn't even a tenth as funny as "Tom is hurt in an imaginative way and pulls a face"
@protorhinocerator142
@protorhinocerator142 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. One of the best examples of this was Wyle E. Coyote. He would plan an elaborate trap against the Road Runner and it would fail or backfire. Then there was that look of confusion, all happening in a drawn-out ohnosecond. The physics of what shouldn't/couldn't have happened combine in his head with the physics of what's about to happen to him, often while he's in mid-air reaching beneath him to find whatever he's supposed to be standing on and it's just not there. You can see it all on his face. The terror hits him and then he falls a half mile to the rocky surface below. The funny part is where the audience is along for the ride in his thought process, all brilliantly conveyed through expression. You can't just have him fall and splat. There's no investment in his predicament. Nobody would watch if it was just him falling, getting run over, and getting blown up. There's a process to it. Each of Coyote's traps has a journey. a. He's hungry or wants revenge. b. He devises a brilliant scheme to get the Road Runner. c. He often sends off for expensive equipment for his trap, usually from the Acme Corporation. d. The Road Runner shows up, apparently falling right into the trap. e. Coyote attacks. f. Something simple goes wrong, or the Road Runner defies the laws of physics. g. Road Runner effortlessly escapes the trap. h. Coyote is now trapped by his own trap. i. That moment of desperation as he tries to un-trap himself. This could draw out for quite a while, introducing new traps or improbable situations. j. No matter how valiantly he struggles, Coyote can't break free from the trap in time to save himself. k. Coyote often resigns himself to his fate, holding up a HELP sign or a tiny umbrella. l. Splat, kaboom, poof, ouch, etc. m. Coyote is seen all mangled up, bandaged, burned to a crisp, or walking like an accordian. You don't jump straight to step l or m. That's just wrong.

The only cartoon I genuinely loved watching an a kid was Tom and Jerry and frankly the movie felt awesome to me. I loved the picturisation, the innumerable references to original episodes, the characters and the simple story. They have to add some sort of a real life character to make it what it should be, a family movie. So that both adults and kids can understand the story and relate to it in some way. The story needed a character to tie the humans and animals together. Just watching a weak attempt at an only Tom and Jerry film showing 1 hour+ of them fighting and becoming friends in the end wouldn't have been fun. I like slapstick comedy a lot but a movie with just that would never work. You need a story, characters of all sorts to balance it out. As a fan, I only cared about the characters and how much nostalgia they brought to me. I don't care about the colour saturation, animation style, etc because these things change and will continue to change with time. The movie was one of my personal favorites I've seen in a while. "entiltled children" who inherited a housing crisis, financial crisis, ecological destruction caused by previous generations and now a global pandemic. i think we have every right to be a little bit entitled occasionally.

@@_ikako_ >occasionally More like "all the time, constantly". You know, what I admire about previous generations is that they were taught about personal accountability; that even if your current life circumstances aren't entirely your fault, it is still YOUR responsibility and YOURS ALONE to improve your situation because nobody's going to hand anything to you on a silver platter. And thanks to modern technology, you live in what is objectively the most cushy period in human history. You ain't got shit to complain about compared to people who had to live through, for example, the Great Depression.

@@thethrashyone that's part of the problem, blaming it all on the individual, and not acknowledging that there are systemic issues in place preventing people from just getting a good job, getting married and having kids, buying a house etc, etc. Plus I don't think any of the current generations lived through the great depression

@@thethrashyone Different generations face different problems. Sure, they live in a more comfortable period in time, doesn't mean their genuine complaints aren't valid. But i partially agree, nobody should expect constant help from anyone. If people want the world to change, they got to work.

I dont know if you've seen it, but to me the 1997 film "Mouse Hunt" does a good job of being a slapstick live action film. The plot is ridiculous and campy, but I think it works with the overall slapstick cartoonish vibe of the whole film (despite having no cartoons in it)... I'd be very curious to hear your take on the film!
