When Ange came in, Spurs had just finished 8th. The squad was a mess. They lost Harry Kane, completely changed the playing style and Ange moved them up to 5th. He’s massively overhauled the squad, and is changing the culture behind the scenes as well if you listen to interviews with back room staff. Spurs have wasted a lot of money on poor transfers the last few years, but now there’s much better alignment between Ange and the new leaders at the club (Lange and Munn). With the money from the new stadium going to more intelligent transfers, I think Spurs have bright years ahead under Ange.

Jack nailed it in the end, this Spurs team can run through anyone on their day. If they’re playing at their best there isn’t much you can do but defend like prime Stoke. Issue is consistency and translating this dominance into wins over low blocks. So fun to watch nonetheless, keeping the PL alive.

They ended last season with quite a bit of a negative feeling due to how poorly they ended the season. I think this season they'll be a team that grows into the season & sees it out in a much better shape

I find the commentary weird. They start by saying Spurs' underlying numbers are really good, including defensively but then describe how they are too open. There never seems an attempt to match the perception of Spurs to their actual performance. According to this Arteta has created a ruthless defensive style that helps them bridge the gap but they're only 1.1 xga better defensively. Make it make sense.

I know what he's saying about Liverpool signing Van Dijk and Alisson. Big money for top players. But at the time they were both huge risks. LFC's data said they could step up but remember. Van Dijk had not played for a top team or at Champions League level. And Alisson had one full season of playing in Europe at Roma before LFC paid huge money for him. Maguire and Kepa were similar position big money signings at the time and didnt work out. So its always a risk.

@@Gooner184the parallels are all there. They signed for the two biggest clubs, they were both record signings at the time for their position, both had prem league experience but not with a top club, both played better for country then club back then, etc. It’s just that Liverpool did their scouting well and United didn’t. That’s the difference.

@JR-sj1jz
@JR-sj1jz 2 ай бұрын
@SKa-tt9nm Van Dijk was Southampton's player of the season in his first year there and Scottish Premiership PFA a couple of times. So I wouldn't say he was far better at country than club, at least in the eyes of those who watched him. As for similarities, bar both of them being expensive CB's, I don't think there is much. Van Dijk played 3 seasons in the Eridevise, 3 in Scotland and 2.5 in the premiership. Plus over 30 games in European club football including the champions league. Maguire had 3 seasons in league 1, a couple in the championship and 3 premier league. With one European club game. I think there is quite a bit of difference there in terms of top flight experience. Van Dijk being Dutch means there weren't as many eyes on him. Unlike Maguire whose English and benefited from England not having a lot of depth at CB. A bit similar to Kalvin Phillips, he caught form at a very convenient time.

Two problems in our Spurs team: experience and mentality. They’re not performing consistently; better against big teams than small, which suggests a lack of concentration in some games and an unwillingness to run. This team needs more experience either through time or incoming transfers. Same potentially with mentality. Only then will Angeball work properly. When they show intensity every game and know it well enough to problem solve for themselves.

If you watch them play out of the back for example, it looks like they drill that stuff heavily. And the game looks like a drill too. Even if they do lose possession in those positions 1 out of 5 times, that number goes down the more practice they have. It seems clear that Ange wants to train them to be mentally comfortable under pressure. Pragmatism is great for the big must-win games but if that’s all you ever do, you never operate under real pressure. Trust the process❤

Football is an art, not a science. How you get your shot as well as how you concede one is just as important as how many you get and concede. Not every teams 2 minutes of possession is the same - some are more useful than others etcetra etcetra. People need to understand this.

58 games is absolutely no time at all in football and that's all Ange has had with what is now one of the youngest and newly assembled squads in the league. I'm reserving my judgement until we've had at least 100 games with the coach and had a few summers to develop the squad. All the signs are there that we can be a great team, but there's still holes in the squad which are disrupting our seasons under Ange.

Also, he's from before Ange but Bissouma is another fairly new experienced first team player and they brought in Werner to deepen the squad with experience. Also recruitment wise, you've got it wrong Jack Pitt Brooke. Arsenal and Spurs were quite similar in recruitment up until, Arsenal started over performing and finished 2nd season before last to City. Then they started buying more experienced players like Rice, and Trossard. But they were also interested in Mudryk, lets not forget. Spurs under Conte only preferred experienced players, they got in Romero, Perisic, Richarlison, and Bissouma. Also Kulusevski, and Bentancur. These are some key players under the modern Ange team. And also another established player under Ange is Maddison. Didn't mention him.

Don't think it was Ange's decision tbh. Looks like he doesn't have much input in the transfers compared to his previous jobs. For example at Celtic he was without a director of football or technical director and was just having to come up with players to buy by himself, and he supplied the likes of Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Kyogo Furuhashi who are all still first team players who were bought for a combined £7m roughly. He also brought in in his first window the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, the most important player at the club still, Jota, who was sold for a club record equaling fee, and Matt O'Riley who was then sold and broke that fee further. That was all inside his first 6/7 months at the club.

His system uses fast agile fullbacks that need to go all day. Bigger men struggle to last 90 minutes at full speed.

Oh Jack you're spot on, that Liverpool were transformed by identifying the keeper and CB as priority positions to strengthen and duly paid £140m for van Dijk and Alisson but they were able to do that bc they held out for months to get the bedt price for Coutinho, before before duly getting ... £140m from Barca. Spurs got £100m for Kane and Levy did what he ajways does, he focused on buying with resale profit in mind, Gray and Bergvall plus a dud keeper!
