I always thought trypophobia was more likely to be caused by our innate fear of small insects and bugs, like bees or wasps, especially when they fly around. Most natural structures with lots of holes tend to be nests, and trigger a fight or flight response to the threat of a swarm of creatures attacking you.

I know it's been six months, but holes freak me out. I know it's partially a instinct related too wasps and bee nests, but it's also a instinct related to diesese hiding in places that usually don't allow it to grow and the fear certain bugs are going to take over my pores

This. Mine stems from being about 7 and I found a chipmunk who had been half run over. Its legs and spine were flat but it was still alive. It was covered in fly eggs. I didnt know what to do so I gave it to a lady who owned the property who put it in a box. The next day I checked and it was still alive but being eaten by maggots covered in even more eggs. It was so traumatic.

Different ages see different "gross out" obsessions. There was a time when some people feared that they were made of glass. Now we fear something that looks like a worm infestation. I'm guessing that this is a tormented "subconscious mind" that has fallen into twisted riffs upon themes of the day. It doesn't need to be addressed with mockery and meanness, but so many do. Humanity is weaker than it thinks.

I wonder if some degree of trypohobia is more common in teens... because of acne and the fear of its effect on image and social life. Then when people 'outgrow' the teen acne, they might also outgrow the trypophobia. Then again... theories about honeycombs or wasp nests also make sense. Being stung by one bee or wasp isnt that dangerous, unless you're allergic... but a *_whole swarm_* defending the hive is potentially deadly for anyone.

3:31 I remember the horror I felt when I first saw this toad in high school biology--it was when I started getting acne and after seeing it, I had some nightmares of toads crawling out of my skin. I think that trypophobia may be related to the genetic memory of the disease of small pox and the scars it, and other poxes, left behind. Perhaps a study could be done of people genetically from from the Western Hemisphere (where the pox diseases were unknown centuries ago) are less likely to have trypophobia than people from the Eastern {where such diseases were common for thousands of years.)

I mean, better performed by a trained psychiatrist, than a parent with no background in the field randomly forbidding you from washing your hands for an entire day to 'fix' germophobia. I remember I found out about trypophobia in middle school. I showed my friends and we all felt uncomfy, but it became a challenge to see who could endure the most before freaking out. I won the challenge, but I was afraid of polka dots and beehives and stuff for a while, and couldn't close my eyes without seeing the images. I told kids about it at school, and they looked it up in the PC lab. When my ELA teacher saw it, he said that anyone else caught looking it up would be banned from the PC lab permanently. It was a school wide rule. I thought that anyone with enough exposure could eventually be triggered, because I was. I'm not afraid of things like honey combs or polka dots, but the images in the video brought me back to that little kid terrified of her own skin. I prefer "avoidance therapy."

@DustinRodriguez1_0

Trypophobia is weird. I had told my friends back when I was in high school that I couldn't eat this certain kind of candy because when you bite it, it reveals the inside is like a honeycomb of tubes. They thought I was nuts. Then well over a decade later, those pictures of the lotus seed pods started going around and people found out about trypophobia and I found out I wasn't entirely weird in being disconcerted by such things. Regular holes aren't an issue. Irregular holes are. The surinam toad is the only one that really bothered me when you showed it. I am particularly afraid of the images that integrate the holes into the human body, or other organic things like the toad. It gives me the same sort of feeling like when standing on a high cliff and looking down. It's not really problematic. It's not like you run into these sorts of things on a regular basis. And friends enjoy having something they can send me that elicits a strong response, since most other 'shock' content doesn't bother me. I have always had anxiety issues (particularly social anxiety, the only thing I'm treated for right now and likely always will be) so it's interesting to hear the link. Of course trypophobia isn't in the DSM yet, it takes decades for newly recognized conditions to get in there. It might never really get there, though, because I can't see it having much of an impact on peoples lives. What most people fail to understand is that something is not a 'disorder' just because it is unavoidable or unusual or similar, it also has to interfere with your ability to live your life as you want. So unless you're having to turn down jobs because they want you to become a hole grid massager, or are trapped in your house because there's a cluster of holes on your front steps, it's not a disorder. It's just a quirk. There is no normal. Everyone is a bag of unique situations. Defining 'disorder' is harder than it sounds.

The human brain is wired to look for patterns. The lack of discernable patterns is unsettling because the brain can't find a pattern. It's like the brain is having the utmost trouble with patterns recognition. Patterns feel good when one is found, and patterns are satisfying. Thus, a lack of patterns just feels unsatisfying and unsettling. The feeling of not finding pattern recognition gives you the unsettling feeling that you are feeling right now.

My boyfriend has trypophobia and he believes it started when he was walking to school with his dad and they saw a dead hedgehog on the side of the road - his dad took the opportunity to use this to teach him about biology and decomposition, so every day they’d go and look at how it decomposed over time. The hedgehog eventually got maggots inside of it, and there were lots of tiny holes where they were crawling out of the skin. He did learn about decomposition and found it educational to a degree, but he developed a fear of the tiny maggotty holes and now every time he sees clusters of small holes, he feels sick and starts sweating and feels like he’s about to have a panic attack, and that’s why he can’t stand to look at anything even remotely similar.
