I can actually see the tea criticisms having some merit back in the day. Britain had to import tea from east Asia at great expense from countries that did not want british goods. This lead to a significant trade deficit & would be one of the causes of the opium wars between Britain & China in the 19th century. Was Mr Hanway thinking that far ahead? Probably not. My guess, he just didn't like it & somebody wrote down what he said.
