Why use M-Disc for data archiving when you can use a much more modern technology such as cloud storage?

I personally HATE Cloud storage! I hate the idea of my stuff being out there for people to hack into. Nothing is secure anymore. When I got my new computer a couple years ago, it was setup with OneDrive. I had issues with my backup being copied more than once, so I had it unsynced from computer. I have never heard of M disc. But I don't consider myself a computer geek either. LOL. I currently use an external harddrive for backing up but keep it plugged in to work off it so I'm not keeping it on computer and needing to spend hours backing up when needed. I am a physical media guy and prefer hard copies of things. I hate streaming, which is why I still collect movies on physical media. Just my 2 cents.

You sound like a guy who would enjoy the M Disc! Definitely don't need to be a computer genius to use it for storage - with a reader/writer, the media, and some jewel cases (or a binder) - you're pretty much good to go!

actualmente hay m-disc con capacidad de 100 y 128 gb. El problema es que el equipo para grabar en esos discos tiene costo bastante alto 😞😞

Another thing to remember is the cost of cloud storage over future years, VS the passive M-Disc that costs no more after the initial purchase.

You could use a tape drive, today you get about 300-400MiB/s backup speeds with tape and storage upto 48TB per tape.

LTO is great but the truth is that even if I got a drive for free tomorrow ... I don't think I'd switch over to it. AFAIK LTO is generally considered to be resilient to data rot for 30 years ... versus hundreds of years for inorganic optical storage. From a data longevity and permanence standpoint, which is where I'm coming from, it's the weaker of the two media.

Cloud storage is convenient but incredibly SUS. If the company that hosts the cloud server goes belly-up, there goes your data. Physical media is still vital today, even books and physical photos. Im definitely gonna consider the Mdisc to backup family photos and such.

At a minimum I'd recommend backing up any important data you've commited to the cloud to a location you can physically access (NAD, M Disc whatever). Some people think that duplicating to another cloud creates enough redundancy but... I think you want to diversify beyond third party reliance.

I had our home movies transferred to two identical SSD drives. I am thinking of using M-Disk for archiving them. The movies go back to the 1930's and with the exception of the two oldest are all 16mm. This is what happens in a family of cinematographers who use the ends of rolls that have to get developed for commercial work promptly.

People say that SSDs can start to lose their charge within 6 months if not used. HDDs need to be used every couple of years or so so that the OS/firmware can rewrite the data which it will do in the background.
@danielcarroll3358
@danielcarroll3358 10 ай бұрын
@@butmunchass SSDs are temperature dependent. If an SSD has reached the guaranteed number of bytes written and then you write data at 25°C and store at 55°C it will only last a week, but if you write at 55°C and store at 25°C it will last 404 weeks. This is based on Intel's published acceleration model for the detrapping retention mechanism. LabVIEW extended this to lower temperatures and got 75 years when stored at 10°C. So let the drive warm up a bit before writing and (if paranoid) put the drive in a few Ziploc bags and a Tuperware container and put it in the refrigerator. Alternately you can power it up, say, yearly and let it sit for an hour to give it a chance to update its cells.

I think also with cloud storage, if you were to pass away, your relatives may or may not be able to gain access to your storage (if care about it to try gain access), provided they actually know you have cloud storage in the first place, unless of course you give them access before parting but that will not always be the case, I certainly do not share my cloud storage with anyone. ALSO TO NOTE all Verbatim M-disc are no longer real M-disc but instead just a regular HTL BD, they are rated for only 100 years like regular BD
@danielontech

It's a morbid thought but part of my thinking as well. Also ... that's disappointing about the Verbatim M-Discs. Are you sure? The product packaging still has all the claims about it being archival grade / durable.
@gam85191
@gam85191 10 ай бұрын
@@danielontech Well if you do a quick search on google "Verbatim m-disc real or fake" you'll get plenty hits of people saying they are no longer real M-Discs for a few seemingly valid reasons. Also notice on their new packaging that they now only claim the discs to be good for "over 100 years", not the 1000 that the m-discs should be rated for. In any case, 100 years is good enough for the majority of people and for most uses, so I have not stopped buying them myself but I do also use some ridata for duplicating archival stuff.

7:06 *SSD. Anyway the idea of preserving data beyond your death is something many data hoarders want, but IMO it's kinda impractical and your choice of storage media really doesn't matter at all. If any non-datahoarder gets your belongings, they'll just sell your drives on eBay and throw out your optical discs. On the other hand, an encrypted copy of your data stored on a friend's NAS has a very good change of outlasting you since your friend is motivated to maintain his own hardware and he won't ignore a dead man's switch that gives him your passwords after 3 months of inactivity.

Are M-Disc DVDs of the type "DVD+R" or "DVD-R"? In their cake boxes it always says simply "DVD" but if you search online stores...you'll find a mix of +R and -R... like nobody knows for sure. Thanks.

@@danielontech No, it doesn't as long as it supports M-Disc as you may know. Apparently it's DVD+R (the "better" of the two) based on couple of websites (although not authoritative ones). Also, the french study for Syylex mentions M-DIsc as DVD+R.

You should have a Backup of your NAS... Personalty i use B2 to Automatically Sync Data between Devices Encrypted by rclone and S3 Deep Archive for Archive ontop of M-Disks, so i have an encrypted Zip in S3 with the same Content as the M-Disk, for any of them.

@danielontech

To date no. Because the stuff I've been archiving since moving over to optical has just been KZbin videos (spread over a few channels). All out there publicly anyway so ... I don't see any need to "protect" the data beyond retaining the copies themselves. When I finally get around to archiving old docs though .... yes it seems like a smart idea to do that ... as well (perhaps) as some basic form of physical protection like a lock box.

That's alot of m discs if you're backing up from NAS? I won't ever rely on cloud given the reports of deleted files and no doubt the eventual global hack. It's matter of when, and not if

Everything he says makes sense. But, for $20 a year Google Drive gives you 100 gigabytes of storage. For $35 a year, you get 200 gigabytes. So is something to think about. It also depends on what kind of files you want to store. I don't have a problem storing music or silly videos and pics to the cloud. I live in Texas. If my home gets destroyed in a tornado, than all my files would be gone. In the cloud I would still have them.

Why not just back it up at a stranger's 100 GB hard computer? While you're at it, leave your logins and passwords with a complete stranger as well. Don't worry, they won't look through your files or your emails. Trust them.
