I am 84 Vo2 34 now but when I was 75 I was in the only one in the UK in the top 10 at all distances from 100 meters to 5 mile road races a good mixture of strength and stamina. Got struck down with advanced prostate cancer at 76, chemotherapy and on going prostap injections lead to awful hot flushes have still not affected my enthusiasm to keep racing, keep learning, keep coaching, keep playing and keep rocking on the guitar Thanks for your videos.

I discovered Dr Attia podcast .. drank his Kool Aid, on his Centenarian Decathlon bus!!!! Bought his book, paying pod-subscriber - listen to him on my Z2 runs. I'm 63 YO, last week had my 2nd VO2 max test done this year at Rutgers University (Bruce Protocol) .. it was 55. In April, shortly after the Boston Marathon (2:52), VO2 was 58 at Rutgers. Going into last week's VO2 test, I was a little beat up ... a 90 mile week, and following 4 marathons in 36 days (Berlin-Wineglass-Chicago-NYC), 3 - under 3 hrs (2:55-2:58), 1-paced someone in 3:13. I will reach about 3600 miles this year, 50 plus races, including the 55 mile Comrades in S Africa .. I race Mile-Steeplechase-marathon-100 miles, my current Mile time is around 5:05, looking to run the Daytona 100 miler in 15-16 hours on Dec 14th. I routinely push my HR (using chest Garmin HRM) to 185 - max out at 190. Train hard, enjoy your healthy life, hop on the Centenarian decathlon!! RL

At 39 I began cycling and running and lost 85lbs after a life of inactivity. From nothing to 11 years of building.... Multiple Ironman, half ironman, marathons, etc, etc... My tested Vo2Max is 56 which I'm quite proud of; however my my question is this: In the last 3-4 years I've really focused on strength, as a 50 year old it matters and I'm quite happy with my progress, but strength comes at the cost of cardiovascular fitness. I have a job and a family - strength training chews up my swim/run/cycling training time - is there a "best" balance?? My VO2 has slipped a bit, but my strength is almost at a lifetime best.

VO2 measures both cardio-respiratory capacity and fat (since it divides by kg). So if you are fit and lean, of course the metric correlates with health.

But fitness correlates with lean mass, so if lean mass goes up, typically fitness also goes up. What is uncorrelated to fitness is fat mass. So for any level of cardio respiratory fitness, simply reducing fat will improve VO2 max. Look at the correlations. There is a strong correlation between fat mass and VO2, much more than total mass to VO2.@@soonahero

@@totallyfake2852 My most objective answer is : It feels like being younger. And for all practical intents, with a vo2 of 50 I'm back in my early 20's. Lots of daily examples like this. But! there's a transaction... I am putting in significant daily training, getting up early and going to bed earlier. Eating healthy. I'm not drinking alcohol or going out as much. In a fitness journey, the body needs a lot of recovery, so I've had sore muscles, feelings of being exhausted etc sometimes. My general fitness is greater than before the angina, albeit I wasn’t unfit, wasn’t overweight, and never smoked. I did have hereditary cholesterol (6.5) which was the only marker for my bad heart health. Condition of my heart was good. Recuperation after exercise was good but better now. Am I to consider myself in the same cohort, aiming for the same exercise intensity and goals, as everybody else? Are there greater risks in seeking to achieve these goals? I think you need to at least mention whether exercise intensity and VO2 max apply equally for all people, some like me, having already experienced a major health incident and intervention.

I would suggest that the specifics of how intense you should train with such a condition would be a person-to-person basis based on the advice of a trusted doctor. In terms of VO2 max, unfortunately I wouldn't say metrics like that grade on a curve. Even if someone is limited in how high they can get it, it's still going to be a major predictor and something that the higher it can be maintained, the better.

Dr. Attia. VO2Max is a function of weight. The lighter you are the higher your VO2max will be. How do you know the longevity is influenced by simply being overweight and high VO2Max measurements are primarily an artifact? Any study would have to filter their sample to just fit people and measure their VO2Max levels and longevity.

Do people living in the Blue Zones who regularly live past 100 years old have high VO2 max and strong grip strength? So many conflicting opinions out there on longevity and how to live a long healthy life, who do we believe?
@RGatGala
@RGatGala 10 ай бұрын
I'm not a doctor or a scientist, but I think I know enough about basic statistics to say that health/longevity is a matter of complexity that renders determination of causation extremely difficult. The blue zones are a good example. They are almost surely some "chicken or the egg" process of genetics, healthier people, healtheir lifestyles or vice versa. My opinion -- the stuff that works is the age-old shit that is so boring (eat healthy, get excercise, don't abuse drugs, don't be too stressed out). And for god's sake, don't stress and waste too much time trying to optimize the fuck out of your lifespan and health. Life's short no matter what, enjoy it.

@@RGatGala absolutely amazing point. When you reach the point of decent energy it will be enough of the 80/20 rule. But someone who is not healthy and wants to have better body and look better will surely want to do everything possible. Someone who can't heal with western medicine will want to try every diet and it optimally because otherwise they will have destroyed life. Someone who is healthy can have decent amount of failures and will still be ok and live long life.

When I take the VO2 Max test as a strict nasal breather with a heart rate monitor, I get a score of 52, which is excellent. When I took the VO2 Max test at a lab with a mask measuring oxygen consumption as a strict nasal breather, I got a score of 30.5, which is bottom %5. The VO2Max test measures over breathing -- how long you can go all out while breathing as much as possible. That is so stressful and destructive in terms of oxidative stress and catabolic hormones. How can training for that possibly be good for longevity?

Is there any data to suggest that having an "elite" VO2max (>97.7 percentile?) is predictive of superior longevity compared to a high VO2max (75-97.7 percentile)? It would be great to see if that's the case considering the following arguments to the contrary: 1) traditionally long lived populations aren't indulging in intense exercise but frequent moderate activity 2) data such as Olympian cyclists don't live longer than golfers, or professional athletes don't live longer than otherwise generally fit individuals 3) injury risk esp in later life arising from pushing the envelope

How would having an "athletic pulse" factor in to this? I ask because I have one. When I'm in pretty good shape, my RHR is around 42 and even out of shape, it's usually no higher than 47.. The lowest it's been is 39 when I was about 27 and in really good condition. According to the calculator I used which goes by your RHR, mine VO2 Max is 59 and I'll be 40 in less than 2 months. I'm actually pretty out of shape right now too, but I've gotten back into the groove recently and working on it.

@@quercus21It’s accurate enough; however, the more important feature is to monitor the trend…my Garmin indicated my VO2 Max increased from 38 to 49, after 2 years of running about 2-3 hours per week. The “side-effects” of that Garmin observed increase have been loss of 25 lbs and ability to run a 5K at a pace of 8:14 min/mile; when I started only able to run at a pace of 10:52 min/mile….and that at a higher average heart rate. Believe me, if you increase your VO2 Max 11%, based on a Garmin watch, you will see absolutely amazing results….especially if you start when you’re 66 years old! 😉

I'm a 50 year old and extremely out of shape. I wanted to start working on cardio and endurance. Running causes my heart rate to blow through zone 2 so I decided to regulate it through inclined walking on treadmill. Walking on a treadmill incline allows me to adjust the incline/speed to maintain a specific heart rate. I read an article that says running helps increase more mitochondria than walking. Is this true? I figured the increase in mitochondria was a result of working at a particular effort level and not a particular mode of exercise. If I maintain zone 2 by incline walking treadmill, will I increase the amount of mitochondria the same as if I run?

Just to make this a bit more reasonable when he says that everyone can be in the top %25 percent for their age and sex with "long enough training history". That sounds almost impossible right? I went from a couch potato with a VO2 max of 29 at the age of 52 to a VO2 max of 43 in one year. This by running twice a week sprinkled with a few normal walks here and there. The first months was a lot of run/walking, always taking a extra day of recovery if I didn't feel like I recovered enough. So yes, it takes work, but it's very achievable if you have the motivation for it.

Maybe having a high VO2 max is also a good indicator that you have avoided chronic injury. ronaldo luis nazario had an elite VO2 max during his soccer career. Then he eventually destroyed his knees. Tell me what his VO2 max is now. Maybe his heart is in good shape but he is limited by his injuries and would do poorly on a VO2 max test. I agree with Peter that exercise is important and some focus should be on maintaining a good VO2 max, but there is a tipping point where more training carries a greater risk of eventual chronic injury. Peter never emphasizes this, it’s usually an oversimplification. I’ve read his book and he made the same oversimplification there too.

My VO2 Max according to my Apple watch over a year was steadily in the low 40's average. Not great and as a matter of fact considered below average for my age. I had a cardiac ablation in April of last year and it plummeted to 21.4 average and the doctor's just scratch their heads. That was 8 months ago and it's held steady at "very poor." Dr. Attia, how?? I was looking for this comment. The publications on which this vo2 max hype are based are all observational studies. Sure, people on the 10% top vo2 max live -say-10 years longer than those in the bottom 10%. Does this mean that if you exercise enough to go from the bottom to the top 10% you will add 10 years to your expected lifespan? Certainly not. People in the top 10% are just different -genetically, in terms of risk taking, of family composition, eating habits, etc- so the lifespan differences are due to a number of factors beyond vo2 max.

It sounds like something most people can not even do especially when we talk about people in the 60's and 70's doing this. I don't care how long they try to ease into it, most older people would be stopping way before the 4 minutes is up or crawling to a stop. Heart rate. Everyone’s power output is different, comparing watts is less useful. If you can sustain 30 minutes at 90% max HR, you’re either already an elite athlete, or more likely, you’re not actually at 90%. You don’t actually need to push yourself that hard to increase VO2max, and you only need to train VO2max a couple times a week. It’s better to work at a sustainable level than it is to overtrain or injure yourself.
