My wife and I are in our 50s and we've decided it's time to leave the US, a country that has given us a lot over many years but with which we feel done.
The reasons are many, and not necessarily what people think. Most folks assume it's for political reasons and sure, there are things we dislike about the US in that regard, but there's more to the story. Much more.
Watch on and let me know what you think!
Do you relate to our reasons? Have you pondered leaving the US yourself?
Leave a comment! Would love to hear from you.

@@LeonCouch Dissatisfaction is an internal quality, and it will be there no matter how much you change the setting. It can be masked by activity and short term pleasures, but that's not a permanent fix. Instead of working on the outside world (setting) which can be a lot of work and very wasteful, it would be much more productive to work on the inside. We learn and teach a lot of techniques but we hardly learn how our body and mind works. How it's restless and suffers constantly and needs band-aids. The act of realizing this/ watching this reduces the restlessness of the mind and the current setting comes alive in all its splendor. This is the only true progress. Other things are just rearranging the deck chairs on a rocky boat. The boat is rocking and that's the realization.

I am not leaving the USA, the USA is leaving me. Toxic political divisions, crime, an obsession with material items, gun violence even in the schools. This is no longer the USA I grew up in. The trade-off of living in (most of) the U.S. is social isolation and rampant materialism, in exchange for better economic opportunities. Not every one can justify the trade-off, not every one can deal with the superficiality of the friendships, the lack of walkable areas, and the fast pace of life.

From the appearance of their home - didn't look like they had a lack of walkable areas but very possibly superficiality of friendships - but the biggest is that their kids went to Europe. I noticed they didn't choose to go to Argentina or South America. I wonder if that is an option.

I don't believe you will have a single regret. I sold my house in California and moved to the south of France (by myself). The experiences have been amazing. Despite being born in America, I never took root. For me, France fit like a glove. Also, you have that magical incentive of having all of Europe so close for weekends and more. Best wishes.

I so want to do what you’ve done. I keep hearing the French countryside calling to me. My husband isn’t really on board but I keep working on him. At this point, there’s really no place to go here in the US that hasn’t been overrun by transplants from other states and countries and it’s only getting worse. I hope one day I can do what you’ve managed to do. Although I don’t speak a word of French.

@@DynamicBailey I am french, so let's go straight to the point. Even one year later. This is necessary. France is swarmed by migrants. Probably more than ANY country in Europe. They come from every continent, hundreds of countries. It is to the point that us french can't take it anymore and 80% of us want to stop it. Most of us are against immigration, not against the migrants themselves, because we have a culture and 2 millenias of History to protect. This is a mission. This is why we are equally swarmed by tourists (more than any country in the world). And so, even in our countryside, you will find americans, africans, asians... more and more so. One of my friend is with a brazilian woman and his ex was a columbian. Migrants really come from absolutely everywhere. It is full of "transplants" anywhere you look. I live in the center of a little town in SW France, near the castle of King Henri IV. Under my windows, most of the time, the languages i hear are foreign. I can't even always tell from where, but arabic (a lot), african dialects, indian dialects, spanish, english, dutch,... dialects from everywhere, more than french (and this is VERY annoying). Despite the fact that you can't ever be french if you are not fluent in french. From our perspective you will merely be one more of those migrants. We don't mind "transplants" from anywhere, whether asia or africa, or america... but only as long as they assimilate and help us protect our heritage, instead of trying to change France to fit the country they left, which happens way too much. And which annoys us to the point and anger and resentment. Most migrants come from french speaking countries on various continents. Mostly Africa though. Meaning that if you don't speak french, you will be an outlier, for the worse, even amongst migrants. To be honest, we would take an african migrant speaking french any time over an american one not willing to learn. An American who won't learn french will hate it here. What is more, in France, people are french or they are not. There is no in-between. You would be a full blown foreigner, but this black person may be a full blown french. Let's not forget, too, that the french regions in South America, Africa, South Pacific, Oceania Or the Caribbeans have historically always had non-cacausian populations. Obviously, i am proud of counting them as fellow french people and quite a few of our black heroes, like Marie-José Pérec, come from there (and not from immigration). For example, the captain of our women rugby team is from a french region called "Wallis et Futuna", far east of Australia. And so doesn't look "european" but is a full blown french who never migrated to France. Others, in the men team, are from New Caledonia or Polynesia, which are both Pacific french regions, too. They are definitley not "transplants", but you would be. And so obviously, there is no BS like "african french" here. So, be careful when using weird references like "overrun by transplants". Even a far right potential voter like me can't stand racist a**holes. Insult a french, you will insult all of us, and being french or not is not a matter of skin color. I am not saying you are like that, but learn how we do things in France before carelessly saying that your place is "overrun by transplants". Because you may be misunderstood. So, now that i said all this. Is this really the place you want to move to? Are you willing to adapt? Do you understand that you will probably have neighbourgs coming straight from an african country and that you being an american won't get you a better treatment than them? That calling them "transplants" would see you prosecuted and punished for slandering? Potentially expelled? Ask yourself the right questions, and carefully consider what it is that you really know about France.

I feel like the video that Nathaniel’s dad put out isn’t to say that the US is going in the wrong direction or is losing its old values as much as it is about not being tied down anywhere in the world and yearning for a sense of ever-fulfillment. I have deep ties to America, though I’ve spent less physical time there than in the country I was born in. However, though I’m working to be more in tune with my country of birth, notably with its language, I have always seen myself represented in America’s values, culture, and language, and prefer my American personality to the one that was made here in Europe. And this while remaining critical of America and its obvious problems. Other places have problems too, and all it comes down to sometimes is the angle from which you want to approach your life somewhere. While on the move, there are always aspects of your old life or of an old country that you are going to miss in that place where you have come for newness, though it is something worth overcoming while being a “modern-day nomad”.

Came across your video totally by accident but wanted to hear what your reasons are. My wife and I have been in the USA for over 13 years (we are currently 32 and 31). We have a beautiful daughter, beautiful dog, beautiful house and a rental property. In general, we have a beautiful life. However, we went to Poland for vacation with our 10 month old daughter couple of weeks ago and everything has changed in our minds. We want to go back to our home country. A lot of our friends went back and they don't regret it. I feel like as a human, my home country has much more to offer especially for our daughter. I think that USA is not the same as it used to. I love America and will be forever thankful for what if had offered me because I wouldn't be able to achieve the same if I started from scratch in my home country many years ago. I am just happy it is not only me and that there are others (like you and your family) that talk about it out loud. Thank you for this video and best of luck! :)

Hi Przemek, I'm curious what you guys ended up doing. I'm born and raised in Warsaw, lived in Canada since the early 90's, 25 of them in Vancouver. I've loved Vancouver for two solid decades, but just like you you, after a visit to Poland and a few other cities in Europe in 2019 something "switched" and I can't switch it back. Adding to that is the fact that Vancouver has deteriorated in terms of exorbitant cost of living, drug issues, housing affordability, etc. I know people who live in Poland still shit on it, and there are many good reasons for that (current government being numero uno), but I also think they are blind to just how far the Polish society has come. The difference between my 2009 and 2019 visit was unbelievable in terms of societal progress. I also got smacked in the face by the things that we miss in North America, many of them named in the above video - ways of relating, food, beauty, history, architecture....something intangible that you just cannot find in concrete/glass cities here. Plus, the proximity of variety in terms of countries and culture. It's something I have not been able to shake, and after 3yrs of driving myself crazy and going back and forth, I've quit my job, and I'm ready to get rid of everything and try to explore more of my native continent while working remotely. I'm worried that it's a gigantic mistake and that I will end up missing all the stability and comforts, on the other hand I feel like if I don't at least take the leap, I will wither away like a leaf on a branch. If worse comes to worst, one can always return, am I right?

My wife isn't 100% sure but it is a work in progress. I am personally ready to make the move and change our life for "better". I agree 100% with all that you have said. However, we need to get out of our comfort zone if we want to keep moving. We might regret our decision or we might not. There is only one way to find out! ;-) We have a rental property that we are not going to sell so if we ever move to PL and come to conclusion that it was not the right decision, it should be easy to come back and we will not necessarily have to start from scratch.

What you describe is what’s called being a “third culture kid,” which my husband and I are also, and I relate 100% to not feeling deeply connected to anywhere, too. And my husband and I also share the same interest in exploring and seeing more of the world, living anywhere, etc. It’s very natural when you have multiple nations and cultures of upbringing!

I really appreciated this video. However, as a black person of African decent I find it difficult to relate and visualize myself doing something similar- especially being able to travel with such ease and be able to just settle in to places in Europe. I few years ago I attempted the same and was met with racism, discrimination. I was dismissed as a migrant looking to come to Europe to mooch off of the land. These experiences you share are amazing but are sometimes super unattainable as a person of African decent. I ended up moving to Kenya. And even here you can see the stark discrepancies in the way Europeans and other white people are treated in comparison to Africans. Perhaps I’m just venting because it would be great to just go out and seek adventure without the fear of being seen as a burden or the boogie man to others. I love who I am. But I hate the way I’m treated because of it sometimes.

I have been teaching in international and not-international schools overseas these past 6 years. My children are grown and my husband is willing. It was a dream come true for me to be able to live in a foreign country and keep a home base in the US. I want to (super) encourage the commenters who don't think they are educated or equipped enough: You are! I met a young man who shows others how they can be copywriters and digital nomads and earn a living. I'd like to show people how they can be English or other language teachers in foreign countries, because people ask me how to do it. I also want to super encourage people who think their spouse doesn't have the same dream....Anyway, more on that later. Thank you for doing this video. You are an awesome communicator.

Although our 9 children are Irish American, like my wife, I will always be Irish. Ireland completes me. But thats ok. Boston suited my way of life as a young soldier. Married with a growing family, I wanted my kids to have an education like i did, one where i learn how to think, not told what to think. Just before i got out of the army, i did really well selling all my stocks in 07 so we bought a ranch in rural Oklahoma. We all enjoy the freedoms here, a part of the country that values our constitution. And if something changes, we have 49 other states to try. So I guess I am also a nomad who found his home in the woods, miles from town, the best working ranch in Cherokee County.😂Best of luck guys. (P.s. This is a great video and thanks for sharing. You are missing one important notion. Why are you leaving? what are you missing that you don't have in the US? my answer is simple: your family! very true as I have experienced this twenty years ago. I grew up in Israel and left when I was 25 YO. After living in the US for 15 years, I moved back to Israel where my family lives. I thought I will be able to connect with them, see my nephews and Nieces growing, be part of the family. but I realized that my family has their own family and things are different. You don't move to another continent because the food at the Restuarant is cheaper or tastier. when I moved back to Israel, I was 40 years old. sold my condo in Los Angeles with my possessions and moved from a 1400SF condo to a 700SF apartment in Tel Aviv. I had some friends in Israel and of course my family was beside me, but I felt very lonely. I was hoping to find a Job that equals to the one I had in the US, but the pay in Tel Aviv was almost half of my US salary. Yes, Israel is not a good comparison to Europe but it is rated as one of the top 10 countries in the world's happiest places to live in. happiness-report.s3.amazonaws.com/2022/WHR+22.pdf (see attached report). does it mean everyone is happy there? of course not. I kept in touch with my colleagues and friends in the US. One day , A call came from my former employer in the US, which is a large worldwide corporation, offering me a position should I return to the US. after weighing my options, I decided to return to the US. this was 17 years ago. I lived in LA, Long Beach and decided to retire in Palm Springs, where there is great healthcare, surrounded by great nature, residents my age, an hour away from camping sights, snow in the winter, clubs, restaurants, theater and a vibrant community. When you relocate to a new place, weather its overseas or another state in the US, you need to connect to the community to feel part of it. either attend a local synagogue or a church, join a social activity group that you can relate, such as outdoors, gaming, etc. Money , possessions will not buy you happiness or make you feel part of a community. Integrating to the local culture and embracing the local community will make you feel connected and a place you can call home. Best of luck to you!

barryusa5 did you not get married and have children? If not, why not? Family is what matters in life over all else, period. A life without children is literally unsustainable. I don’t understand why people would choose no children. Is it materialism? Selfishness? Laziness? Bad luck? There’s no house big enough, no car fancy enough, no neighborhood posh enough, to replace family. Then I see these materialistic people decide to “downsize”, “relocate”, “reprioritize”, etc…thinking that will fill the void that having no family has caused…but it is a folly. Even people who HAVE children, have a bad or nonexistent relationship with them…usually because they chased money or career status above the relationship with the child(ren).

@@lisajohnson9124 you are mistaking anger for hate. I hate no one. I do get angry when people feel entitled to take advantage of the freedoms, privileges, and bounty that my fore fathers fought and died for, without thankfulness, or with resentment. Ignorant people criticize our system, yet are glad to eat the fruits of our system, give nothing back and complain they didn't get enough. If you think the US isn't popular anymore because we finally willing to call out greedy free loaders, you are very short sighted. Who do countries being victimized run to for help when despots and tyrants rise? Who pays the cost of not only our own military protection, but pays the freight for countries too small or too poor to protect themselves? Who answers that call? Who defeats the enemy, then tries to educate them and rebuild their Country? Who rises to help when natural disasters happen around the globe? The US helps all countries where needed. Yes, and when all that is forgotten time after time, and critics rise from the woodwork to criticise us, it makes me angry. Not because I think we are perfect, but because we try so darn hard to continue to be the best place on earth. A critic has the easiest job in the world, because no person or country is without fault. But show me a better way. When the next need arises, the very people who were most willing to dismiss our contributions, will be the very ones with their hands out again, trying to come here or return here. Wouldn't you you feel exploited and angry? You don't need to grovel, but you shouldn't spit in our hand. You speculate why the US isn't as popular now. I believe the core reason is envy. I am thinking seriously of moving to Oviedo, Asturias, or somewhere in Northern Spain. I am currently living in one of the coolest places to live in USA, Austin, Texas. Still, I feel out of place. And life is getting stupid expensive and politically dizzying. Lot's of reasons-- some external, but many are personal. Mentally I am there, I would leave tomorrow. But the logistics are more difficult. So I keep wondering... May I ask if you have any regrets? I know it's complicated, but I am just wondering if you have any insights. The Spanish in Asturias is a little different and you'll run into unfamiliar Asturianu words like xarda (caballa in Castellano), especially in the countryside. Oviedo would be a very good choice because of the connectivity and great quality of life, very few tourists and very low crime. We have lived here almost two years and have not needed a car because the public and private transport options are so convenient. The temperatures are much cooler than Austin but the winters are not hard. Internet is good. There is a LOT of music from Jazz to traditional bagpipes to classical. Because of the university, there is a multicultural and vibrant vibe. Lots of public art. Lots of public green spaces. So many nature trails. BOOKSTORES everywhere. My husband and I came on a non-lucrative visa during the start of COVID, which did complicate things. The Spanish are a lot more observant of safety precautions and conscientious because they respect each other and the health system, which is really great. We rent an apartment for flexibility. The laws for renters are very fair and protect their rights. The most useful site for finding property is Idealista. We had our belongings shipped via U-Crate (very reasonable and simple). Any other questions, I'm happy to answer. NO regrets.

A lot of us don't push ourselves because of fear. Just do it or research how to do things. I have that problem often, yet sometimes you have to investigate. I know Portugal is not that expensive because years ago I watched a program on Italian pensioners living in Portugal. Another time I saw a show where Italians went to Croatia to get their teeth done. You never know what can happen until you try. I went to Peru just before covid happened. So nice. I hadn't been in decades. I have family and friends there. If I weren't married, I would probably move from the US even though I have lived here all my life. Too expensive, dangerous, and not as stimulating for me as other places.

I believe there are two groups of people: those who are most happy living in the same place they were born, raised, educated, lived, etc. for the rest of their life, until they die, and those (like me) who are forever vagabonds, we're most comfortable living out of a suitcase, holding few posessions (though we value them very well!) and require, like fuel, the constant challenge, mystery, awe of living in a place that may at times make us feel stressed, lonely, frustrated but still intrigued and in awe. GO FOR IT!

Stephen Harper, the former Prime Minister of Canada, wrote a book in which he states there are two types of people "Anywhere" and "Somewhere." Somewhere people are negatively affected by change whereas Anywhere people can simply pick up an move with the times. He accounts for the populist movement by saying that Anywhere people get angry when factories close up due to Globalisation, whereas Somewhere people simply move to where jobs are (including different countries.)

@@AyushSharma-xg7td Actually, both young and old have left. The only common denominator seems to be that all the people leaving the US for Czech Republic are better off than the average. Most of the immigrants to CZ are Americans but I know a couple of Englishmen, Germans, Israelis, Russians, Greeks, and people from various African countries. Their dominant reason is a desire for more freedom, better medical care, and (much) lower taxes. I recently spoke to someone in the US about ObamaCare because I had no idea what that is/was and from what he described, that's exactly what we all have over here.
