As an African woman who didn't grow up around white people, I was shocked to find that people out there with African hair hate their hair. I don't get it. We had Indians around, but I never heard any African girl wishing they had Indian hair. In fact, we did not focus on hair at all. It was just hair, and everyone had hair ... their own kind of hair. We did what we did to care for our hair, but no one was judged for showing up with natural hair. Any state of African hair is accepted equally.

@rosa... The ⚪️ influence is still there so heavily. I cannot say just how shocked I was of seeing all the weaves of natural hair (that was dedicated to idols) and synthetic hair (which can and does affect the health of many). There seems to be like this image ingrained in the minds of women and men alike...

I went natural for a year and while I loved my 4 c hair, I did not love the experience of having to do extra steps in order for my hair to be presentable on my standards. Every wash day meant I had to stretch out my hair in order to be able to style it with ease. I'm now back to relaxed hair and while It's much easier for me to get the look I want, my relaxed hair is so fragile that it breaks all the time. I'm contemplating going back to natural hair and get it long enough so it's easier to get different looks.

I would personally recommend moving from relaxers to straight natural because the consistent heat will loosen your tight curls without the severe damage of chemicals. Yes it takes longer but ultimately you will have healthier hair that doesn’t break off easily!

As a curly girl (3a) who never wore her coarse hair naturally and always straightened it I can somewhat relate. I wear my hair naturally since 7 months and at first always put it in a bun. Since 1,5 months I wear it open and it felt scary, but also liberating. And for the first time I don’t feel that I am trying to mimic someone else’s style, but just have my own. Still I don’t feel pretty all the time with my natural hair all out in the open. But that is me and I am at a point where I don’t have to be or feel pretty all the time. It’s paradoxically boosting my confidence. Who would have thought?! Not me. But I am glad. And in regard to representation: Perhaps the change is just coming and you are at the heart of it. I find 4c hair beautiful and special and want to see way more of lt.

I have to say, I’m completely shocked. I did not think this was a problem in Sub-Saharan Africa. Wigs, perms, etc are a relatively new thing. How is it that Africa is having this issue when black people are the majority and there should be no euro beauty standard? Here in the states we are told that people unwillingly change themselves because of the euro beauty standards. Africans have been styling their hair for so many centuries and now there is racism/colorism/texturism? Most black people in sub-s Africa are not even mixed like the black people in the states. I honestly thought African beauty standards were the norm there and most people were doing their hair there like they have for thousands of years.

I'm "tender headed" so braids are out. So now I surrender. I've gone back to straightening my hair with a hot comb. I feel much better now. Sorry not sorry. 😂❤😊.Ladies do what works best for you. Thanks for sharing April! I understand what you're saying because I have experienced that too. And I agree that we should do what works for us. However, 4C hair is not problematic. I find that it hurts when combing out the dry or tangled hair. But it doesn't hurt when I gradually comb it from the tip to the root when the hair is wet and tangle-free. Ultimately, 4c hair is different. It requires a different management than straight hair, and a little time and effort. The more you understand how the hair works, the easier it gets.☺♥

This hair is a plant a very complicated plant that requires care and maintenance. Just because other textures exist doesn't mean you should downplay yours. Getting discouraged is valid though, it's alot. I truly wondered of we were isolated from other hair textures would we be thinking this way. I really do think society and social media has done a number on the way we see our hair, very sad overall. Little girls need to see confident women embracing their hair not the opposite.

The thing is, the other racial groups are and have BEEN getting the representation they need for years! They grew up seeing themselves in movies and music videos! They were conditioned to thinking they are the epitome of beauty! When it comes to us ? The representation is poor and like you said, we will probably never be accepted the correct way until we are properly represented in the media.

I don’t like 4c hair bcz it’s so fragile. If you’re like me and like to try new styles, 4c hair is not it. This hair doesn’t like to be moved. It wants to stay in one spot or it breaks! It’s very demanding! Also it shrinks a lot so you have to work to grow it longer than other textures have to just to show your length. It’s very time consuming. Sorry not sorry. I won’t be pressured by others to love every feature I was born with.
