The amount of F1 philosophy that is trickling down into pedal bikes is wild to see. It makes sense to have them flex when deeper in the stroke

It’s fascinating for sure. Mtbs have seen rapid development across all elements - frames, forks, brakes, drivetrains, etc. - over the last what, 40 years? - while road bikes held to pretty constant elements for a long time, with very small iterations (tires increasing in size by 1-2mm every 5-10 years since the 80s. Custom road bike builders have been tuning stiffness at the system level all along, including performance objectives under a range of cornering load profiles (grand tour descending, criterium racing, etc). It seems to me DH couldn’t really get to fine-tuning frame stiffness until tire size and pressures stabilized (nobody runs 24” Nokians anymore), and the sweet spot of frame and fork travel was locked in. Telemetry sure has helped parse out the influence of element in the system too, which is a big advancement.

@@ChlorophyllCrusher I agree with you on the road bikes, seeing the new iterations of specialized tarmac ive noticed the main changes being aerodynamic impovements and weight savings. It also looks a bit stiffer than the SL7, couldnt say if it is though. Its interesting to see finite amounts of compliance being put into the design process of these french bikes. Alot of people prefer *almost* no compliance at all in their bike frames

I feel moto GP may have had more influence. Flex has been engineered into those frames for some time now. The Bizzare notion of “moar stiffer” has been a unique mtb/road marketing gimmick for too long so good to see things change
@oskarskates2 ай бұрын
@@emveeess839Its worth mentioning that a stiffer bike will be better for out of saddle sprinting efforts which is unique for bicycles

Literally every other sport has figured this out decades ago but mtb has been dominated by marketing for too long. Stiffer is a higher number so it must be better.

What a scoop! Way to go Seb Stott! I loved how the Mondraker team had not one, but two secrets in their sauce.

I remember Dynastar had dampers in the tips of their skis a weight with an axle through it, if you took a hard hit they fell out and the ski skied the same. Great to see some new tech on WC bikes, not sure how much will trickle down, but keep pushing.

Why are the teams having a focus on this now? It is well known that Nico Vouilloz was tuning spoke tension in his rear wheel in the 90s and early 00s to gain compliance.

The commencal guy touched upon it but I’m interested how the flex characteristics and therefore handling differ between components. Does a flexy wheel feel the same as a flexy fork? Can one area compensate for the other leading to a similar result? When looking for a certain wheel stifness, how do rim choice, spoke choice, number and tension compare?
