Well it's because when you know you are lying you use a more formal vocabulary to convince. And when you swear it's like you couldn't care less what they think about what ur saying.

I think it's important to distinguish that swearing _once in a while_ makes you more trustworthy, because it can show frustration and emphasis. But swearing too often or as filler words makes you seem like you are exaggerating too much, or are less intelligent, where you're deemed less trustworthy.
@1110-s1t8 жыл бұрын
Peter Schmidt did you check the study or are you basing that on your anecdotal experience?
@Toastmaster_50008 жыл бұрын
Australian Progressive Did _you_ check the study? Because first of all, the first part involved fewer than 300 people, of which are presumably from a pretty concentrated demographic. That would make that as worthless as an anecdote. The Facebook analysis is somewhat useful, but didn't have much detail in terms of control groups or average amount of swearing per sentence. So it's hardly credible in of itself. There have been other studies suggesting that swearing _too much_ makes others deem you as less intelligent. Generally speaking, when someone thinks less of your intelligence, they're not going to trust you as much.
@chainsrad63548 жыл бұрын
Peter Schmidt dude. You just shut you're own argument down. You changed the subject. It's not how people perceive you, that's not what's being discussed, it's about how u actually are.

An experience from my past self who swears a lot. When I was in high school swearing is one of so called "skills" everyone know me and my shitty mouth. Well I did met a lot of friends from my swearing career. I swear for a reason. Just to entertain my friends. Well just to make them laugh and be funny most of the time everyone likes me, it felt like I was meant to swear I felt proud of myself the teachers even called my potty mouth because I even swear at them ( they know I was just joking so they didn't take it seriously ) Honestly speaking, on my honesty scale, I lie a lot. About the stories that I made up just to entertain my friends. On the other hand, I'm straight forward with my words when commenting on one's looks or the way they act, people hated it and I just replied that I was just "being honest". And then It took a toll on me. My friends started to leave me like I don't even exist. I was a memory a past even a history. I was left alone. I knew it was my mouth all along. The way I speak from the way I act, it is obscenely rude. I have to change I say to myself, so I did. I have stopped swearing. But my friends were not happy about it, they want my old funny self back, they want me to make dirty and dark jokes again, they want the way I was before. And I didn't change back I am stuck with my new self. The quiet type, the one who avoids everything. Even my friends. I thought maybe my friends will like the new me but none of my friends speak to me again, until this day I graduated my high school currently looking for a collage. Left out most of the time. Here is a lesson from the story above, Befriend with the one who curse a lot, they can give you a lot of entertainment, they will will be your ears when you need one. But Never Ever, Be The One who curse.

I'm not entirely convinced...I feel like there may be some sort of selection bias going on here, but that's mainly a hunch based on personal experience. I don't swear at all, but I find that a vast majority of the time it's not that I'm consciously keeping myself from cursing, but that I'm not particularly inclined to swear in the first place. It could be that since the data was drawn in large part from FB, that people like me just aren't posting on FB, and thus aren't being counted in the data at all. I know I've literally never posted a status on FB, so perhaps there are other people like me who also don't swear but also don't post.

I think people who curse more are just less in control of themselves, because they don't think before they speak. When asked a question, the truth is what comes to mind first. If a person doesn't think before they speak, of course what comes out of their mouth will be true, but that doesn't make them *honest people*...it makes them stupid and out of control. "Murica!"
@JorgenPakieto8 жыл бұрын
Although this is true to a certain extent, you should take it only as a small indication until you know more about the person behind the swearing. I've known people who have admitted to swearing because it helps them lie while coming off as an honest person. I know swearing sounds like the pinnacle of aggressive expression which induces the vibe that these people are honest, making people aware of this however can also cause them to apply it as a weapon for the exact opposite purpose of swearing in the case of honesty that is.

I've heard it repeatedly stated that by some people they couldn't understand why the actors acted like it was such a painful process. The ones that said this had given birth to multiple children over their lifetime. I've never researched the matter and don't tend to trust actors and movies to portray things accurately so have no clue as to what is the average females experience giving birth, or what are the other possible ranges of experiences that can be had.

But he is about the least trustworthy guy I know, and I catch him lying all the time. Now as hes starting to mature a little, I think hes starting to grow out of that. But from what Ive seen, its the complete opposite. Me for example, I almost never swear, and Im about the one guy you can trust the most with anything, and I rarely lie as well. The only time I do is if its for a good reason. For example, when someone asks me how they look, I might say you look great. However sometimes thats a lie.

Come to think of it, these same women have lied to me and others about some very important things to the point that I don't trust them anymore and doubt if they really are my "friends". They never swear either and think swearing is "bad" and spend their time taking duckfaced selfies with fake smiles to post on the net. One of them even pretended to be me to impress some random guy (that guy was impressed by something I had written on a forum and she took full credit for it, telling him it was her who had written it and then proceeded to even unendingly ask me details about what I had written to impress the guy further even though she proudly hates the subject matter herself - comicbooks). This was a guy she doesn't even like - she was just looking for attention. These women are all above 30 years old and it's weird that they still think swearing is bad and are more concerned with impressing other people at all costs more than being honest to themselves and others

No ONE SAID this was anywhere NEAR Scientifically Proven!!! Studies (1 or More), have POINTED in this DIRECTION. But it makes sense to me, especially when someone is taken by surprise, (probably going to have a more honest reaction, swear more). Or if a person is guilty or has prior knowledge, (this person is going to be on their best behavior, be controlled, and say what is most favorable to them . Also, when someone is giving an unsolicited statement of opinion or feeling, it seems likely they would use stronger words that are less calculated.

Most of those people might have some thing similar within their personalities, but the benefits of becoming one totally depends on the friend, I am serious. Besides, I'd say there are many reasons why I wouldn't be friends with one because everyone should be in some way different and it would take too long to explain, but I would prefer choosing a friend that doesn't cuss

I swear/cuss when I think its appropriate or proper. Example: If I were to describe a rapist, I wouldnt say, "He is a bad person." I would say, "He is a fucking shitbag." It gives my words more meaning.

Funny, I'm the only person I know that doesn't curse -- and also the most honest person I know ...

You should be friends with people who curse because otherwise you'd have no friends because everyone curses.

How would you quantify honesty scientifically? Making a chart? A chart of what? I never pee myself, I never have dirty thoughts about any woman/man? How would you fact-check that? I'm just curious ;)
