You'd be amazed! I made quite a bit in tips at Taco Bell. But that's because I made it fun and went above and beyond for every customer. Anywhere from $1 to $5 usually, but once I got a $30 tip and another time someone asked how many people were working (closing shift, 30 minutes before 1am closing time) and gave me several $5 bills, one for each employee. 🙂 To be clear though, we never asked for tips, we didn't have a "tip jar" of any kind. We just did a better job with customer service than most places.

Whenever I find myself doing something nice for someone like buying them something, (and I can see them face-to-face) I always tell them (or ask the cashier to tell them) to pay it forward when they can. Emphasis on the “when you can”. Hope that makes sense!

The only time I've ever encountered this was when I worked as a server at a restaurant. People would be buying other people's orders. I say pay it forward is a lot easier in a restaurant than it is at fast food drive-thru. The most in that chain we got is seven

Lol it's not that complicated. You say you want to pay for the person behind you, that person is next to pay once you pull forward which means after you pay for yourself they only need to bring up the next order. It's the same for them regardless of who's paying for the order. If you were to say I was to pay for the person 8 cars back then yes that would cause them a bit of annoyance but paying for the person behind you doesn't make anything confusing for anyone

Okay but it really does make it confusing to keep track of. So many of the comments are acting like that is not a valid point. It’s a nice gesture but it’s not as easy to keep track of as you might think. And tbh it is also a bit entitled to expect that everyone is going to be okay with paying for the next person’s order. Deciding to pay it forward is ensuring that eventually one person is going to drive away feeling like an asshole just because they aren’t as financially secure. If you’re willing to pay for the next order, maybe consider leaving a tip instead. Saves someone else the stress of deciding to pay for something they weren’t planning to. There are also spots to donate money at a lot of drive thrus so that could be a way to break the chain as well
